Tape echo sound with a Yamaha DX7

video upload by Benjamin Dehli

"The Yamaha DX7 lacks built-in effects, so I programmed a patch designed to mimic the sound of a tape echo. The audio is from the mono output of the DX7 and no external echo/delay or reverb has been added.

The DX7 patch will be available for download at https://store.dehlimusikk.no/ as part of my upcoming DX7 bank/cartridge, DXtraterrestrial 2, which I'm currently working on."

The gate output from Matriarch's sequencer is connected to the gate input on the SH-09.
The CV output on the SH-09 is connected to the first oscillator pitch input on the Matriarch, which is internally normalized to the pitch input of the other oscillators.

Paraphonic setup with Therevox, Erebus and Dark Energy

video upload by Benjamin Dehli

"Connected the Therevox ET-4.3 and the Dreadbox Erebus v2 together to create 4 note chords.

The Doepfer Dark Energy creates the "drum" sounds and is triggered by its own LFO.

The Envelope output on the Erebus is connected to the Expression input on the Therevox and controls its VCA.
The Ring output on the Therevox is connected to the CV input on the Erebus and controls its pitch.
The two oscillators on the Erebus are 2 octaves apart and the pitch is relative to the Ring position on the Therevox.
The pitch of the two oscillators on the Therevox is tuned 19 semitones (1 octave plus a 5th) above and 24 semitones (2 octaves) above, relative to the lowest C on the keyboard controller.

For example, if you play a D with the ring on the Therevox and a C and D# on the keyboard, you will get a D minor chord with the notes from lowest to highest: D, A, D and F.

The "drums" from the Dark Energy is a single track with EQ automation (mostly high-pass filter) to emulate different drum sounds.

All the instruments are recorded live and no other instrument tracks were added, just effects (delay, reverb, etc.).

Effects used on Therevox ET-4.3:
Hairball Audio FET/RACK Revision D
Roland Dimension D SDD-320
Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man

Yamaha CS-80 Bladerunner sound on a DX7

video upload by Benjamin Dehli

"The Yamaha CS-80 and Yamaha DX7 are probably polar opposites in both operation and sound. The CS-80 is an analog subtractive synthesizer, whereas the DX7 is a digital synthesizer that uses frequency modulation (FM) synthesis. The only thing they really have in common is the Yamaha brand name.

This experiment was an attempt to see if I could make the DX7 sound somewhat close to the iconic CS-80 sound famously used by Vangelis in the Blade Runner soundtrack.

The DX7 patch will soon be available for download at https://store.dehlimusikk.no/ as part of a DX7 bank/cartridge I'm currently working on."

Free electric harmonium sample plugin (Elektrisk Salmesykkel)

video upload by Benjamin Dehli

via Dehli Musikk in the comments of this post for the original hardware Yamaha L-20D.

via Pianobook

Elektrisk Salmesykkel

A Yamaha L-20D electric harmonium / reed organ with some added features

This sample library includes 2 presets, the regular preset “ElektriskSalmesykkel” (best in most cases) and the looped preset “ElektriskSalmesykkel (Looped)”. For the regular version, each sample are approximately 16 seconds long. For the looped version, to achieve the best possible loop point, some of the loops are short and some are longer. Some of the loops will however have some minor artifacts. For best audio quality, you should always use the regular version. And only if you have notes held for more than 16 seconds, use the the looped version.

USER INTERFACE
The user interface offers precise control over every aspect of the instrument and effects.

Auld Lang Syne on a Yamaha L-20D

video upload by Benjamin Dehli

"Playing an excerpt from Auld Lang Syne on a Yamaha L-20D electric harmonium / reed organ 🎹"

Happy New Year everyone!

The above video by Benjamin Dehli went up yesterday on the 31st, and I figured it would be an appropriate start to the New Year - something vintage that harkens back to the pre-synth age, but new to the site. This is actually the first post to feature the Yamaha L-20D. Aparently it's an electric harmonium as opposed to an electonics-based harmonium like the Telharmonium (click and scroll down for additional posts). If anyone knows more about the Yamaha L-20D and/or when it was released, feel free to leave a comment.

I found the following brief discripton from this forum:

"Yamaha harmonium - looks like it dates from the 60's or 70's in great condition. I've tried to find out info about these on the net for ages but there doesn't seem to be ANYTHING out there on it. This plugs into the mains and it sort of whirs up - like a mini leslie rotating speaker and when you play you can feel the wind coming out of it. It also has a sort of knee pedal that you can use to alter the volume. sometimes there's a bit of a buzz overall but it seems to depend on the day and the weather but a great vintage sound. No outputs on this but has built in speaker so would be great for micing up and recording."

There is no mention of it on Wikipedia as of this post. That said, it sounds like the electric portion powers the airflow, so it's likely closer to a classic wind based harmonium (click for additional posts) than an electronics based harmonium like the Telharmonium. Note via 120years.net, "The Telharmonium can be considered the first significant electronic musical instrument and was a method of electro-magnetically synthesising and distributing music over the new telephone networks of victorian America."

I also found the following video from four years ago.

Music for a Found Harmonium (Cover) on a Yamaha L-20D

video upload by Benjamin Dehli

"Music for a Found Harmonium by Penguin Cafe Orchestra played on a Yamaha L-20D electric harmonium / reed organ. All the sounds is created with the organ and recorded with a matched pair of AKG C451E."

Happy New Year!

Thank you to eveyone who enjoys the site, supporting members, and sponsors. You all keep me going each and every day.
