Teenage Engineering Eurorack, POM-400 Matrix Kits & Talking to Aliens with a Steiner Masters Touch

Talking to Aliens video upload by Dave Vondle

This is a bit of a triple post. Dave Vondle of http://matrix.vondle.com wrote in to let me know the final 9 units of the Ghielmetti Pin Matrix Kit for the Teenage Engineering POM-400, previously posted here, have been completed. It's featured in the video above and in a post by Teenage Engineering on converting their Pocket Operator Modules (POM) to eurorack.

That said, first the description for the video above:

"Figured out how to communicate to extraterrestrial organisms.

The Calmset 3 connected to my brain is generating the frequencies - and the Masters Touch is taking breath, bite, and touch into the Teenage Engineering POM-400 (with my matrix kit attached). Breath controls the amplitude and bite/touch modify filter parameters. This all runs through the VOCU tape echo."

See here for some additional posts featuring the Masters Touch including pics. You can also find some info on Patchman Music here.

Second, info on the final batch of Matrix Kits from http://matrix.vondle.com:

"Over a year ago I created a bolt-on kit to turn a Teenage Engineering Pocket Modular 400 into a matrix synth like the EMS Synthi. Instead of using cables to patch outputs from one module into inputs of another, you use the supplied pins to connect a row (output) to the corresponding column (input).

I have completed the final batch of 9 kits, as the manufacturer of the matrices recently went out of business. Teenage engineering just wrote a blog post featuring the kit, so I figured it would be a good time to get these last kits out there.

More info about the kit:

The matrix itself was made in Switzerland by the established patchbay company, Ghielmetti, and the kit simply bolts onto the back of the POM-400 modules with the supplied hardware - there is no soldering required. Once bolted on, it enables you to make 100% of all the patches you could otherwise make using cables, with the added benefit of having virtually no restrictions on the number of available outputs and inputs for each module. Patch cables can still be used in conjunction with the matrix for interfacing the system with external modules and running sound out from the device.

I thought you folks might be interested! For more details and to place an order go to matrix.vondle.com

Bonus Video - Here’s me when I patched a Steiner Master’s Voice into the POM-400, with the kit installed:" [above]

Third: eurorack conversions for Teenage Engineering's Pocket Operator Modules (and euro racking Pocket Operators):

via Teenage Engineering: eurorack is a very common system format when it comes to modular synths. there are tons of modules and manufacturers on the market and the pocket operator modular series is eurorack compatible. this means any POM system can be used together with any other module, from any other brand. while the pocket rack format is slightly smaller than eurorack, you only need some minor tweaks to fit your pocket operator modules in your eurorack system.

here are a few ways to 'eurorackify' your pocket operator modulars and pocket operators, plus a bonus mod to really expand the capabilities of your POM-400.

eurorack front panels for POM
the two companies malm.audio and jklmnt have joined forces and created custom eurorack front panels for the complete range of modules available in the pocket operator modular POM-400 and POM-170. pick your favorite module and mount that in your existing eurorack system, or create a complete replica of an entire system. the various panels range from 6 hp width, up to 18 hp.

power adapters
they've also made a convenient power adapter that easily converts the power connector from pocket rack to eurorack. no soldering is required and everything above is available through the oddvolt webstore.

pokit for POM-16 by grayscale
the company grayscale makes modules and stylish eurorack front panels for a lot of products. their pokit is a eurorack conversion kit for the POM-16 keyboard. the front panel has a matte black finish and is 42 hp wide. the kit even comes with matching gray official knobs. this is a great option for enabling your system with the 4-channel sequencer, arpeggiator and keyboard that is the POM-16.

pocket operators and eurorack
the usually hand-held regular pocket operators can also be used in a eurorack system. this could for instance be a great way to create a portable and powerful grab-and-go live performance instrument, or to have pocket operators tightly and neatly integrated into your studio setup. here are two examples of how to mount pocket operators in a eurorack case.

Akai EWI 1000 & EWV 2000 Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Vintage Akai EWI 1000 with companion EWV 2000 module—the best EWI ever made!

This particular unit belongs to saxophonist Chase Baird and was used in his EWI tutorial video featured on YouTube.

Completely refurbished by Matt Traum Patchman music in fall of 2018. The proprietary cable was replaced with a DB9 computer cable, (which is significant as the proprietary Akai cables notoriously give out)—and this synth will be functioning for decades to come. The breath sensor was also replaced/updated as well as the battery in the EWV 2000. Matt also put a beautiful new LCD screen in the unit.

Chase bought this because of the Formant filter which Nyle Steiner designed to emulate string instruments. He needed something to do a good string emulation for Migration’s “Lines in the Sand” tour. Chase endorses DSI Sequential now and is almost exclusively playing his Prophet (as well as playing a lot of guitar!)—and decided to let this go.

A beautiful synthesizer with a cool history."

Patchman Music Mono/Poly Volume 2 Soundbank Demo

"Complete details on this Patchman Music soundbank along with a patch listing, and Paypal order button can be found at the link below...

https://www.patchmanmusic.com/korgMon...

This is a special wind controller / breath controlled soundbank designed by Patchman Music for the Korg Mono/Poly and iMono/Poly soft synth and iPhone / iPad app. The sounds you are hearing in this demo are completely responsive to the player's breath. They are being played by a MIDI wind controller. The same responsiveness can be obtained with keyboard players when using a breath controller. A wind controller or breath controller is required for these sounds to work.

Every sound in this Mono/Poly Patchman Music wind controller soundbank is recorded in this extended 17 minute audio demo. This demo was recorded directly into Apple Logic from just one instance of the Korg Mono/Poly softsynth with NO ADDED EFFECTS. Everything you hear in this audio demo is exactly what comes out of the output of your computer or iOS device running the Korg Mono/Poly soft synth- effects and all!! These clips were played live with a wind controller by wind controller guru Matt Traum."

Matt Traum EVI - “Overjoyed”

Published on Mar 26, 2018 Patchman Music

"Matt Traum (from Patchman Music) plays his vintage Steinerphone EVI (handmade by EVI / EWI inventor Nyle Steiner) that Matt personally customized. The very rare EVI is one of the very first EVIs of this body shape ever made by Steiner as he was working on an all-MIDI version of this instrument with this body design (which later became known as the "MIDI EVI"). But this EVI is not a MIDI type EVI. The electronics in it are 100% analog taken from an older 'Steinerphone' type EVI and transplanted by Steiner into this body. This EVI is plugged into the hand built Steinerphone "suitcase" synth made by Nyle Steiner (the yellow panel device you see in the lower right of the frame). This synth was made famous and was used extensively in recordings by Michael Brecker (including his epic 'In A Sentimental Mood' recording).

This is a great composition by the immensely talented Stevie Wonder. I feel this is one of his finest and most clever compositions with quite a sophisticated chord structure, melody, and lyrics.

Patchman Music Boss PS-6 Harmonist Wind Controller Demo

Published on Nov 15, 2013 PatchmanMusic·17 videos

"Here is a quick demo courtesy of Matt Traum and Patchman Music of the wonderful Boss PS-6 Harmonist pedal. Matt plays live through several of the Boss PS-6 settings with his EVI wind controller. All harmonies were generated in real time by the PS6 Harmonist. Three different patches were used as the input signal including a simple analog sawtooth lead from a Crumar EVI, the Piccolo Trumpet & Stevie! patches from Patchman Music's TURBO VL upgrade chip installed in a Yamaha VL70-m. A single note was input and the harmonies were all generated in real time and recorded. The Boss PS-6 is an INTELLIGENT harmoniser, that is, you can tell it what key you are in and it will create an appropriate harmony that fits the key of the music. It also does standard pitch shifting as well. You can hear both of these methods in this demo. Get your own Boss PS-6 Harmonist pedal and any other wind controller gear from The Wind Controller Specialists- Patchman Music! Email matt@patchmanmusic.com or call Matt at 440-740-1288."

Matt Traum - "James"

Published on Feb 2, 2013 PatchmanMusic·9 videos

"Matt Traum improvisation on Pat Metheny's classic "James".

I am playing the Steinerphone EWI on this. I thought I would play a little improvised version of Metheny's "James" harmonized ala Michael Brecker. This is a one-pass recording with no overdubs. The harmonizer is an Eventide Eclipse with a custom patch designed by myself being controlled in real time via foot switches.

I am playing what I call a "Hyper-EVI Steinerphone". It's the exact same model Steinerphone EWI Michael Brecker played for many years in the mid to late 1980s with Steps Ahead and on various studio sessions. This model was the first EWI that Brecker played and he took the instrument to amazing heights. This horn was hand made by the great wind controller inventor Nyle Steiner. It is an EWI (woodwind type controller)- but I have modified it internally so it fingers like an EVI (brass type controller). The horn plays incredibly well- it's the Stradivarius of wind controllers. It is hooked up to a companion synth system also designed by Steiner. In this system are two Crumar EVI synth modules and a Steiner "wood and glue" formant filter unit (which is not used in this video). Only one Crumar module is heard in this video fed into the Eventide Eclipse processor.

A little trivia on this system you see in this video: This is the actual synth unit that Doug Norwine played on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson with Melissa Manchester when she performed "La Vie En Rose" (you should be able to watch it on youtube).

Matt Traum - "Thinking Of Michael"

Published on Jan 13, 2013 PatchmanMusic·8 videos

"On this the 6th anniversary of the passing of the great Michael Brecker, I thought I would play a little improvised tribute dedicated to my friend and Sax/EWI icon- Michael Brecker. This is a little thing I was playing while thinking of him and what he did with the amazing Steiner EWI electronic wind instrument. He touched a LOT of people with his music and he was a wonderful human being too.

I am playing what I call a "Hyper-EVI Steinerphone". It's the exact same model Steinerphone EWI Michael Brecker played for many years in the mid to late 1980s with Steps Ahead and on various studio sessions. Only one Crumar module is heard in this video fed into an intelligent harmony processor with reverb, chorus, and delay. Amplification is via two Yamaha MS60s speakers running is stereo.

Steiner-Parker Microcon Analog Synthesizer Module

via this auction

"Contains one calibrated and one uncalibrated Voltage Input to the oscillator, one CV input to the VCF, one positive trigger input, one negative trigger input, and an audio output.

Single VCO with 3 waveforms, coarse and fine tuning. LFO level, rate, beat/vibrato. VCF frequency, gain, resonance. Envelope generator has attack, decay, sustain, damp. VCA triggered audio gate.

Designed by Nyle Steiner, inventor of the EVI and EWI (Electronic Valve and Wind Synthesizers)
The power supply was replaced and unit tuned two years ago by Matt Traum at Patchman Music. Replaced the old dried out rubber feet.
Works great - tested today using a Frostwave fatCONTROLLER analog sequencer and Lyricon Driver.
The only quirk is that the change in sound on the waveform switch is extremely subtle, so I'm not sure if that is intended or if the switch is dirty. Other than that everything sounds fantastic."

Akai EWI3000 with Modded 3000m and Speak and Math

via this auction.

See the video at the end of this post.

"complete akai ewi3000 wind controller system with all the extras and then some

the 3000m analog synth module is a 4 oscillator analog monster. the synthesizer responds via direct analog with the controller for smooth response. something you will never feel with midi or any other non analog breath controller. there is alot of options with the synthesizer such as detuning, oscillator synch, filter options, lfos to modulate things. the editing is done on the module itself and is easy to get around if are familiar with subtractive synthesis and study the block diagrams that are in the included manuals. for those not wishing to do their own editing, the module is loaded with patchman's bank of the finest sounds done by a professional. patchman is the man when it comes to wind controller related things. the banks on this one super responsive and range from moog basses, oberheim brasses, analog reeds and strings... amazing!

the analog module also has midi in/out. an external in for routing into the modules internal filter and amplifiers. this external in is a great solution for older or newer synths that don't implement midi breath. there's alot of options onboard the module itself with plenty of knobs to fine tune to anyone's playing style.

the module itself was modified in many ways. first is nyle steiner's deglitch chip that was not available commercially installed into the unit. the deglitch chip adds a response to the fingerings for extra smooth playability. next is the battery clip modification. the battery is a fresh battery installed with a battery clip so that the owner can easily replace the lithium battery in the future without any hassle.

the final mod on the 3000m analog synth is the cv outputs. if you are using cv out on the unit it doesn't affect the synth's performance. the cv for various functions include outputs for ground, bend, bite, breath, vibrato, pitch octave, picth fingering, and combined output. some outputs do not quite get to +5 volts but many of the main paramaters such as pitch, bend, breath, etc do go to 5 volts. a template will be provided to explain outputs and a drawn up chart of the voltage ratings from each output will be detailed. this will be great for people into modular synthesis but if you are going to mess with cv it assumes you know what voltage your inputs on your gear is capable of. for example this system will work really nice with moog gear, synths, and moogerfoogers that accept cv controllers. a breath controlled cv modular synthesizer of your own design. the possibilities are amazing and truly unique,

i also am including a cv control box with 4 heavy duty banana plugs approximately 8 feet in length. the cv control box accepts the banana plugs routed from the ewi3000m. on the other end it has TS 1/4" as well as two that can be used as trs 1/4" outputs to hook up to your other cv gear. the stomp switches will toggle on and off the cv you send from the ewi to your cv gear. there are also bright blue leds installed so you can tell what's on and off. i will also provide a file emailed to the winner to show how the cv control box works. the cv control box also runs on 9v battery and clips easily to the box.. the 9v is used for the led light indication if you need to send the 9 volts to an output for cv gate. two of the 1/4" outputs are also trs so there are ways to patch via banana cables from one banana to the other as well as having banana jacks for ground connecting and for the battery itself.

also included is a circuit bent speak and math. it accepts cv for pitch control and midi that you can send from the 3000m. the 3000m also has inputs for routing into the filter and VCA of the ewi so you could run the speak and math for expressive control of the speak and math. the midi is a kit that i purchased from highlyliquid. there is full documentation on how it is used in midi and is available on the highly liquid website. the speak and math also has loop function on a stomp switch, a photo theremin with a foot switch for foot control of pitch as well as a knob for fine tuning the threshold of the pitch. led light indicators for envelope information and on/off for both stomp switches,.. 1/4" cv ins for pitch. 1/4" switched jack for output. power on/off push switch.

included in this auction is:
-one of a kind ewi3000 like new wind controller with custom metallic white finish and deep chrome.
-custom made one of a kind dedicated case for controller by akai with keys, extra compartments and zipper pouch on outside. protective case covering for case
-certificate of authenticity by akai
-ewi3000 module with cv mods on banana jacks, nyle steiner's deglitch chip installed in unit, battery clip modification with fresh battery
-custom cv control box
-4 planet waves high quality professional banana cables 8 feet each
-4 banana jumper cables 1 feet each
-2 connecting cables for ewi to module. one still in factory packaging
-polishing cloth
-two brand new replacement rubber tip mouthpiece in addition to rubber tip installed
-ewi strap
-two yamaha recorder cream for conditioning and care of rubber gaskets
-6 foot midi cable
-2 trs 2' cables
-manual printout of both ewi3000m and ewi3000
-professional patchman music pro bank installed in unit with backup copy on cd rom
-circuit bent speak and math with midi and cv ins, specially made for this setup"

akai ewi with circuit bent speak and math cv midi synth - YouTube via spunkytoofers.

previously posted here. Also see this video.

"the akai ewi 3000 uses control voltages and has an all analog signal path with it's dedicated module. in this example the ewi 3000m module sends midi to the speak and math as well as control voltages brought to the surface of the 3000m on banana jacks. the banana jacks are sent to a cv control box which is essentially a foot switch box with various logic functions and and open ended patchable interface. ewi controls overall pitch of the speak and math based on pitch fingering cv output in conjunction with octave key cv output. the midi is a retrofit kit available by highly liquid and accesses the speak and math's rom by triggering key commands. this modification gives the user a wealth of circuit bent sounds accessed by midi note triggering. the speak and math's output is sent back to the 3000m's analog amplifiers and filters via breath control on the ewi. there are various note sustain loops and a photo theremin available on the surface of the speak and math via stomp switches. the stomp switches activate leds to indicate on/off. also a big knob with a rubber boot that can be played with the feet.. this is my first run through of my speak and math cv midi synth"

Nyle Steiner CONVERTED EVI

via this post on Patchman Music where you will find more wind controllers. via Evan

"Here is a very special item. This is an EXTREMELY RARE hand-converted EVI done by the inventor Nyle Steiner. The controller began life as an EWI and was custom converted by legendary EWI / EVI inventor Nyle Steiner into an EVI brass type controller. Steiner no longer offers this service so this is definitely a collectable EVI as well as an amazingly expressive instrument. Also included with this custom EVI is an Akai EWI3020m sound module in superb condition- it even still has the removable protective plastic sheet on the LCD! Since the EWI3020m module is true analog, it has a super-smooth, fat, and warm sound. This system is in great shape with just a small amount of dings and scratches from normal use. This EWI3020m module has been updated by adding a backup battery clip and a backup battery in the Patchman Music Wind Controller lab (www.patchmanmusic.com). This system has been professionally checked out by wind controller expert Matt Traum. The EWI3020m has excellent chord capabilities. It can trigger four-note user-programmable chords externally via MIDI. Internally, the EWI3020m has 2 REAL ANALOG oscillators, a REAL ANALOG filter with resonance, 2 fabulous FORMANT filters for more realistic solo string and woodwind sounds, a REAL VCA, an LFO, and 2 EGs per patch! The sound of this system is super-smooth and expressive and it is capable of exceptionally fat analog leads and basses. Click here to visit the Patchman Music EWI3020m soundbanks page and hear this module in action! Patchman Music offers two soundbanks for this unit and they are included with this package (a $90 value). 50 patches in the EWI3020m are permanent and 50 are user-editable. The EWI3020m has jacks for Line Out, External In, Headphone Out, Program Up and Down footswitches, MIDI IN, MIDI Out, and MIDI THRU. The External In jack allows you to control ANY synth or sampler with the EWI3020m's REAL ANALOG filter and VCA. This provides SUPER-FAST and SUPER SMOOTH RESPONSE since the modulation is via direct control voltage and not MIDI! There is also a front panel knob for adjusting the Ext In level. This unit responds so fast you can actually hum or growl into the mouthpiece to modulate the sound. The EWI3020m has extensive matrix modulation capabilities. This sale includes the converted EVI brass-style wind controller, the EWI3020m analog sound module with original box!, the special connecting cable, Patchman Music EWI3020m soundbanks Volumes 1 and 2 on floppy disk (a $90 value- specify PC or Mac format), and a copy of the printed EWI3020m manual."
