An industrial drumkit for the Modor DR-2 (no external FX, no talk)

video upload by Richard DeHove

"The original concept for the DR-2 saw it as an enhanced 909. That's pretty much irrelevant now as the DR-2 has been developed into something far deeper. Yet you can still see traces of its origins in the step entry and many of the core sounds. Personally I'm not a fan of the 909 mainly because it keeps you penned into a defined territory of sound where weirdness is not allowed. I like odd sounds in my drum machines.

I think the great balancing act with drum machines is between providing immediate excellent drum sounds, and providing enough tweakable range to allow genuine sound design and experimentation. At one end you have untweakable machines like the 606; at the other extreme are samplers where the range becomes so vast you can get distracted by endless sample banks. One solution is to have both, but that leads to different problems where you have too many one-trick machines.

Where does the DR-2 sit? You can certainly feel it's 909 roots in that those sorts of kits and sounds fall out of the machine with almost no effort. You can hear that sound in many DR-2 demos: tight bass drums with rimshots, hats and snappy snares. But the parameters are wide enough, and the available drum models weird enough, that you can get away from that quite easily.

That was the aim here: Can the DR-2 move into a more industrial sound without any external processing? It's easy enough to dirty things up with fuzz and EQ, but what about the raw sound?

In the two demo tracks I use a single set of drum models (from left to right): Tom, Ride cymbal, Noise bassdrum, Claps, Claps, and Rumble bassdrum. Each pattern has a slightly tweaked version of those same drum models saved as a kit. I've used the internal tilt filter, parametric EQ and distortion. I'm not game to use the compressors yet - I still need to learn how to tame them.

On the first track I start with just two sounds and am using a polyrhythmic clock in 8/12 time on channel 3. It gives an unsettling feel and constant variation to what is otherwise a simple 16-step pattern.

Of course there's no processing or effects other than what you see. It's pure DR-2. Even the volume between patterns is unaltered.

(And as per the thumbnail image: The DR-2 needs an all-black version).

AJH MiniMod Keyz Complete System - Minimoog-inspired Eurorack Synth & Keyboard Controller

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Complete AJH Synth systems now available.

First up the MiniMod Keyz - equivalent of a Minimoog, plus extra modules, pre-installed inside a Cre8audio NiftyKeyz Eurorack case and keyboard controller.

This makes a complete Eurorack modular synth that's ready to go straight out of the box.

Our package includes the standard MiniMod voice - directly based on the original R.A. Moog version of the Minimoog, along with a RING SM, Tap Tempo VC-LFO, and the new Low Fat HP filter.

It is fitted with custom Dark American Walnut end cheeks, for a more vintage look, and comes with a selection of patch cables, so that you're ready to start making the floor rumble right out of the box.

The Ring SM is a 5-channel Moog CP3 mixer, EMS Synthi/VCS3 based Ring Modulator, and a very rich-sounding, simultaneous 2 octave sub-bass generator. User Guide:

The Tap Tempo VC-LFO is a very complex modulation source, with 16 common and unusual wave shapes, including stepped and sloped random voltages. Every element can be voltage-controlled, and can be clocked by external modules/sequencers, or act as a master clock, clock divider/multiplier. User Guide:

The Low Fat is a voltage-controlled 2hp high pass filter, and a great compliment to the classic, huge-sounding Transistor Ladder Filter. The Fattest filter in town needs to slim down sometimes! User Guide:

The NiftyKeyz is a 4-octave keyboard controller, with a large host of features, including arpeggiator, 4-voice polyphonic control, built-in LFO, and much more. Check out the website:

This pairs with the MiniMod system well, as it provides everything from Minimoog-like functionality, to way beyond, whilst maintaining the classic vintage sound and honouring the circuitry of the awesome original.

The AJH SYNTH Eurorack range consists of high-end modules, all hand-made in the UK, most of which are based on classic, vintage designs, authentically recreating the circuitry of much sought-after analogue instruments and technologies of the past, whilst greatly expanding them, and bringing them to modern Eurorack levels of convenience, limitless flexibility, and reliability.

Check out the AJH Synth playlists for module 'User Guides', and 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will be either performances or 'how to' guides, detailing functions/methods, and a range of sounds, some familiar, some less so, containing a patch sheet at the end to show you how to construct it for yourself.

Introducing Swizzle Circuits

You can find them at https://reverb.com/shop/swizzle-circuits

Playlist:
Big Boom Demo
Swizzle Circuits Tripple Attenuator Module Demo
Swizzle Circuits Opto Gate Demo - EuroRack Module

Big Boom

We went back to basics again with our twin Op-Amp designed circuit. Tuning knob will take you anywhere from deep Kick to high Tom sounds. The Decay adjustment will get you from a quick hit to a self-resonating bass drone. A ..::boom::.. button lets you preview the sound or play by finger. Gate In is sensitive enough for most triggers and a LED indicator lets you see when it booms.

Powered - 6hp (30mm)

You get exactly that... a Big Boom. You might need to become better friends with your neighbors after you install a Big Boom or 2 in your rack. Turn down the Tuning and Decay adjustments and just let it rumble. Then again its not hard to tame this beast..Tuning and Decay in the mid range makes a very recognizable and amicable kick drum sound that will drive any melody into something that will make you want to move your body. Manual trigger button on the face lets you play by finger to add just the right low end push to your creation.

Just like every Swizzle Circuits module, it comes fully assembled, tested and ready to go. Just take it out of the package and plug it in.

Big Boom EuroRack Module features:

includes power cable.
Install more than one for multiple drum sounds.
LED indicator shines through the face to let you see the action.
Decay adjustment goes into a self-generating bass drone with wave re-triggering for rhythmic stuff.
..::boom::.. button allows you to manually trigger the Big Boom for preview or free play.
Gate In is tuned to accept most CV gate triggers, sequencers and LFO signals.
Swizzle Circuits custom designed PCB

Tripple Attenuator

Some of the most basic modules always turn out to be the most useful! At 8hp, this module is small enough to fit anywhere, but big enough to give you full precise control. Grab all three at the same time during a big break! The LED indicator lets you know that your signal is staged right where you want it and ready to be used. Attenuation works just as well to tame unruly LFO, envelope and other CV signals. Just like every Swizzle Circuits module, it comes fully assembled, tested and ready to go. Just take it out of the package and plug it in.

3 fully independent rows of attenuation ready for mixing and fading audio sounds or limiting CV signals. All channels include luxurious 45mm sliders with LED indicator at the tip to tell you when there is signal at the inputs. Linear range control with total cut off at the bottom and full pass through when the slider is at the top.

Tripple Attenuator Module features:

8hp (40MM) non-powered
45mm linear taper sliders with red indicator LEDs at the tip.
Non-Powered to fit in anywhere.
LED indicates incoming signal (audio and CV) at a glance.
Swizzle Circuits custom designed circuitry and PCB

Dual Opto-Gate

Seems simple; lots of uses! Similar to Vactrol control, the analog microchip this module is built around has been used for decades to switch isolated circuits and transfer high-speed signals. We took that ability and put it into a passive module that somehow has Gating indicator LEDs that show when the Gate is ON. How did we do that? Hmm. Just like every Swizzle Circuits module, it comes fully assembled, tested and ready to go. Just take it out of the package and plug it in.

At the heart of this module is the ILCT-6 2-channel opto-isolator. Full analog gating with nothing to get in the way of your signal. Inputs can be audio signals OR CV control signals. This little wonder can gate well into the audio range allowing some simple frequency modulation. Gating signals can come from an LFO, envelope, or sequencer.

Module Features:

- 2 fully independent Gating channels.
- Non-Powered; fits anywhere.
- Gate ON indicator LEDs on each channel.
- Very minimal Gate ON resistance.
- Capable of Gating into the audio range for frequency modulation
- Gating follows LFO or envelope shape. Swizzle Circuits custom designed PCB and circuitry.
