"Even though I’ve got dozens of unfinished projects on my trusty Teenage Engineering OP-XY (some of them almost ready) I felt the need to break the cycle. I had the sense I was starting to repeat myself. So I turned to one of my favorite analog synths, the KORG minilogue xd, looking for a patch that could spark something new. And from that came this track… though I’m still not sure what exactly it is.

As usual, the atmosphere is dark, but halfway through it unexpectedly takes on a rock-inspired twist before returning to its original mood. I even tried reworking the idea on the OP-XY to make it more polished (and complex), but in the end I decided to record it raw—exactly as it came to me.

Hope you enjoy it. I plan to explore this same process on other synths as well. Let me know in the comments if this journey through analog synth sound design intrigues you.

"This video presents a short improvised piece evoking a simple, melancholy, lullaby-like atmosphere, realized on the Korg MS-20 analog synthesizer. Greg outlines the sound design process which starts as a simple triangle wave and is transformed via ring modulation from a second oscillator, which is itself dynamically pitch-modulated by an external CV sequencer (Korg SQ-64). The result is a dynamic and slightly unpredictable texture that creates a sense of organic movement and showcases an inventive method to extract an unusual sonic character from a vintage instrument that lacks extensive built-in expressive controls."

Being built around 40 sound sources made from capturing unique, unrepeatable sonic moments, FRAMES readily represents a bespoke collection of specially curated samples created using prepared instruments, resonated sound objects, and aleatoric performances using experimental techniques. These are all recorded at 96kHz using specialist microphones to capture sound beyond the range of human hearing, ready to pitch down and explore.

Such sound sources are split into five categories: INSTRUMENTS — traditional instruments captured using extended techniques and aleatoric performances; OBJECTS — uniquely prepared objects and instruments played in experimental ways; EFFECTED — heavily effected, processed sounds, and resonated objects; TEXTURES — tonal, textural, and found sounds that are perfect for blending; and WAVES — sampled synth waveforms taken from an analogue hardware collection.

Above and beyond that, the new ZONE SHIFT feature vastly expands the timbres of each sound source, enabling immediate dynamic exploration of the movement and detail found within them. Thanks to shifting samples from different registers, sounds can shift from slow and muted to frantic and urgent with each key press.

But better still, those 40 sound sources can be layered, sculpted, and effected using the deep two-layer sound design engine, featuring multimode FILTERS; two MOTION LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators) — LFO 1 and LFO 2; six envelopes; LOFI effects; an ENSEMBLE page for blending additional voices; parallel CHARACTER insert effects; and dedicated SPACE send effects. "Making this patch, I imagined traversing immense distances between galaxies through the voids in deep space. I used multiple Sapphire Elastika modules tuned to produce an ever-shifting drone chorus. Then I added a few extra voices to round out the bass. There is plenty of slow-flowing chaotic modulation for interesting variation and texture.

"Played some more with the ALA Monsoon this time - a drone from Moog Mavis is recorded into Monsoon after some wavefolding, and then put through some heavy reverb. A heavily (self-)modulated Maths is opening the VCA channel. The melody comes from ALA Beehive into the Void algorithm from TTA Zverb, while the aux out goes through ALA Benjolin (with the filter being modulated bei Benjolin's Rungler) and into pico DSP's delay.
The v/oct from ALA Steps quantized by Shakmat Bard Quartet, with the harmonies switched by RitS QUA through Noise Engineering Vice Verga. I used the trigger input on the Beehive for the first time, with the ochd expander providing the triggers.

This is a set of most of them (some in abbreviated form), which I’m releasing all at once to sort of “clear the vault” and feel like I can start afresh with making new music. Unlike the previous collection I did, this one contains some actual ambient music—particularly the middle section. "I discovered the technique of 'Moon Bouncing', using the moon as an echo, when I was researching composer Pauline Oliveros. Her experiences with 'Echoes from the moon' sounded fascinating. Like with all experimental music techniques of old I wanted to try the process for myself. This started a two year long journey.

With the support of Martine-Nicole Rojina (who also helped out on camera on location) I got in contact with the radio telescope in Dwingeloo, a huge dish designed for space exploration. They helped me send signals to the moon: a sopranist (Johanna Vargas), a double bassist (Paul Cannon) as well as sounds from my patrons Sventothem, Michael Féaux, Andrew Stone, harper2k, Filip Ferngren, Dave Seidel, Gary Walker, Michael Peters, the void inclusive, Brendan Ford, David Williams, Joey Pop, Jeremiah Turner, Richy486, Joshua Philgarlic, Tim Moore, Grant Basma Horsnell, Arson Bright, Dan Kibke, Antonio T, Chris Sherman, Sergey, Charlie, Bartek Trame and Dixit.
