NAMM: New Yamaha Montage AWM2 & FM-X Synthesizers

Update: cleaned this post up a little (note below).

"Yamaha Montage Synth, Based On Entirely New Technology

YAMAHA’S NEW MONTAGE synth offers unprecedented ways for keyboard players to control and interact with sound.

For more than 40 years, Yamaha has developed industry-leading synthesiz-ers, from the revolutionary DX7 in the 1980s to the renowned Motif series, one of the best-selling synthesizers of all time. The Montage, available in 61-, 76-, and 88-key configurations, features the Motion Control Synthesizer Engine, a powerful and intuitive way to interact with and control sound.

The Motion Control Synthesizer Engine controls two iconic Sound Engines: Advanced Wave Memory 2 (AWM2) and FM-X. Compatible with previous generation Motif libraries, the AWM2 engine is exponentially more powerful than the previous Motif XF flagship with nearly ten times more wave memory, integrated flash, double the effects, and twice the polyphony. Joining the powerful AWM2 engine is FM-X. A sophisticated pure FM (Frequency Modulation) synthesizer engine is capable of producing classic ‘80s or cutting-edge EDM sound with excellent dynamic range, power, and fidelity.

Montage also features a brand new user interface with color touch screen, endless rotary encoders and the Super Knob: a macro control allowing users to control multiple parameters simultane-ously.

‘Montage is the culmination of over forty years of synthesizer legacy and innovation,’ said Nate Tschetter, mar-keting manager, music production, Yamaha Corporation of America. ‘Playing and experiencing Montage is, quite simply, inspiring.’

Update: A quick note on the evolution of this post. As typically happens, stuff gets sent in, I parse it, post it, and then updates come in. Below is the original blob of text I was confronted with from the source site. This was before the scans went up. It appears the source site did a bad copy and paste of the article and jumbled sections out of order. Imagine reading it first. Some of you did and got to enjoy my experience. For those that didn't here you go. A Tacky what?

VATER TACKY SACK VATER PERCUSSION’S new Tacky Sack Grip Enhancer, the first product of its kind to be marketed to the drumming world, features a sack of grip-enhancing rosin powder that absorbs moisture and provides drummers additional control of their drumsticks while performing in humid and sweaty conditions. Gently “clapping” hands on the Tacky Sack applies rosin powder to the palms. A cord is included to hang Tacky Sack from a snare drum, stick bag, or hard-ware. “Once again, Vater knows just what I need, even before I do,” said Slipknot’s Jay Weinberg. “Especially in intense, sweaty environments, Tacky Sack allows me to lose myself in the vibe of a song without worrying if I’m going to send a stick flying from my palms. My grip relaxes, and I’m better able to avoid carpal tunnel-like problems. Tacky Sack lets me thrash with com-plete control.” Marilyn Manson’s Gil Sharone added, GRIP ENHANCER YAMAHA’S NEW MONTAGE synth offers unprecedented ways for keyboard players to control and interact with sound. New Electro-Harmonix Super Space Drum and Crash Pad

Published on Jan 11, 2016 EHX

"EHX’s rich history was marked by many revolutionary pedals but one of our most distinctive lines was a group of analog drum synthesizers that included the Crash Pad and Super Space Drum.

Like the original from 1980, the new Crash Pad can create an array of drum sounds and other-worldly oscillation sweeps, as well as process external sounds thru its resonant filter. Plus, it’s been updated to respond to expression pedal/CV input for external control over the filter in real-time.

A faithful reissue of the cult-classic released in 1979, the Super Space Drum uses analog synthesis techniques to create mind-blowing sounds ranging from deep kicks to high toms to sci-fi drums. Trigger it from the built-in pushbutton or an external (non-MIDI) electronic drum pad. Pass external sounds through the gated amplifier via the aux input. The Super Space Drum lets you create, control and manipulate a stunning array of synthesized sounds."

"A nice little mini modular with a good selection of features -
2 DCOs each with 5 waveforms and a CV input. One useable as an LFO
2 ADSRs
1 LPF with 1 input and 2 CV inputs
2 Square+Triangle LFOs
1 Gateable square LFO
2 VCAs
2 Ring Mods
4 RCA Breakouts and 1 MiniJack breakout
1 Joystick controller with button out
1 noise source
1 sample and hold
4 imput signal mixer
Midi in

I think that's about it...

It's quite a fun piece of kit - good fun to use with a eurorack modular, or just freerunning on its own.
Here's a quick play around from today with it patched to itself doing some some fake stereo panning using the two VCAs and LFOs. The only external effect was a little bit of reverb [embedded above] - For some reason the ADSR knobs work in reverse - no idea why. But it's like that on both for some reason.

Powered by a 12v wall-wart type power supply which I'm including, and about 30 mini-banana patch cables and all topped off with a bunch of 1900 type knobs.."

David Bowie Tribute - Space Oddity by Jordan Rudess

A beautiful tribute by Jordan Rudess was just added to the bottom of the main post here.

RIP David Bowie

Published on Mar 6, 2014 Halloweenjack84

Good advice for life as well. David Bowie lived it, and gave many of us the freedom to live it right alongside him. He is a hero in the truest sense. One of the most famous, yet kindest human beings on earth. His influence is quite literally beyond measure. It isn't just his music. More than anything it is permission to be whoever the hell you want to be and the permission to tell anyone who judges you to f off, all the while being kind about it. No apologies, no time wasted. Think about that a bit. He will continue to give freedom to countless generations to come, simply by being the person he was. I love his music, I cherish what he gave us, and I love how he did it - he made it cool to be yourself while at the same time being kind, tolerant, and compassionate towards others. He was the best of the best, and I love him for that.

Thank you captain. If there is existence after death, I hope you are enjoying it as much as we enjoyed your existence here with us.

On the synth side of things, because this is a synth site after all, I was curious how many posts mention David Bowie. I knew there would be a few. It turns out there wasn't just a few, but a whopping 77 posts total. That from a man not known for synths. Many of the posts are repeat references to Bowie's use of the stylophone and other synths, but there are some true gems there. Spend some time looking back on his influence on the synth world. He touched everyone. The following is just a handful of tributes from the synth community. If you have any to add, please feel free to leave a comment below.

David Bowie - Lazarus

Published on Jan 7, 2016 DavidBowieVEVO

"He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life - a work of Art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn't, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry." - Tony Visconti (1/11/2016)
