Audio Damage 914 Fixed Filter Bank Now Available

The Audio Damage 914 Fixed Filter Bank is a faithful recreation of the Moog Modular Synthesizer's 914 module, and a major upgrade to our original 907A plugin. This plugin creates unique filter textures by passing the signal through twelve band-pass filters, as well as a low-pass and high-pass filter.

The 914 is a subtle effect, capable of adding rich luster to pads, and giving percussive and lead synth sounds a vocal quality. It is an excellent tool for the sound designer's palette, simple to use yet capable of complex and unique timbres. Improvements over the original 907A include a bandwidth control, separate level adjustments for wet and dry signal, makeup gain, and four extra frequency bands.

» 24db Low-pass and high-pass filters.

» Twelve fixed-frequency band-pass filters.

» True stereo operation.

» Separate wet and dry level controls.

» 15dB of makeup gain on the wet level.

» Full MIDI learn mode, for MIDI CC control of every control (VST only; handled by host in AU version).

914 is available as a VST effect for Windows, and as a Universal Binary AU/VST for OSX. PPC version requires OSX 10.3.9 or later.

Roland SH32 Sample

Microcontrolers and the Milton 2 Model 21 Prototype

Peter Grenader of EAR and Buzzclick Music posted the following on AH.



"What you're looking at, while not yet complete, is operationally equivalent
to the Milton 1 engine board. Actually there are a few added features over
it's predecessor...with a ten of the componentry/cost and about a third of
the real estate (and this includes a host of parts which will not be
required on the final incarnation, such as the power supply, the 555
timer/trim pot we've slapped on here to facilitate an incoming clock and the
dummy voltage source - the large Alpha pot - for testing the VC direction).

You gotta love microprocessors!

Mitchell Sigman - Celebutante and Berlin

Mitchell Sigman, keyboard player for Berlin, sent me some shots. Pretty cool as I grew up on Berlin, specifically Pleasure Victim, with Metro being my favorite track. The year was 1982.

Mitchell also has his own project, called Celebutante. Check out this video for some ARP Odyssey, Moog Polymoog, and green on black retro monitor action - gotta like that. Mitchell Sigman is on guitar and vocals. The video features both beauties on the left. Who is that btw? I sent Mitchell an email asking, but haven't heard back yet. Update: Her name is Diana Dencker. She's done a few commercials.

"Actually every synth in that song is either Logic Audio's ES2 or Native Instruments Pro-53 (except for the little square wave lead after the chorus which is Logic ES1). I swear it's true. If I fooled everyone with the Polymoog, well, cool, that was the idea (the strings are all ES2)." Nice. That definitely sounded like a Polymoog to me.

It's a mini that I built and is covered with temperature sensetive liquid crystal paint.
When it's black or grey like that, it's outside its color range.

BBC Radio's The Sound Hunter and the ANS Machine

Fascinating. The ANS was developed by Russian engineer Evgeny Murzin from 1937 - 1957. You draw on the surface to produce sounds similar to a theremin. The worlds first touch interface? -On-screen MIDI keyboard that can be played with the mouse, or keyboard (Q is Middle-C, Z two Octaves lower) The 'T' on the left of the keyboard sets Toggle Mode where each key stays held until you click it a second time.

-MIDI Channel selector : 1 to 16 channels.

-FULL MIDI Automation: Complete MIDI Continuous Controller. You can use this to automate parameter changes from a sequencer, or to control your synthesizers from an external MIDI control surface.

"Savart'’s Wheel, designed by Bart Hopkin, is widely acclaimed for the fact that it makes the most obtrusive, obnoxious and irritating sound imaginable. The instrument is made up of a series of disks of graduated size mounted on a motorized spindle. The exposed outer edge of each disk is lined with ridged material, with ridges spaced about 1/8 inch apart. As the spindle rotates, the player holds a sort of plectrum against the ridges as they rotate past, producing some number of ridge-bumps against the plectrum per second. MIDI "fingerboard" - New Flickr Shot

Interesting piece. According to the caption that's a MIDI ribbon controller based on the Kurzweil Expression mate. Shot by royce. "This is a somewhat customized midi controller based on the kurzweil expressionmate. i used to play violin, and especially loved string quartets, so i wanted to have a "fingerboard" for glissando and vibrato effects."

Update: I asked royce how he positioned it when he played it. He replied, "i pretty much play it like a cello, although still use keys for discrete pitches. also use a footpedal extensively. this wendy carlos ripoff used it quite a bit for natural vibrato effects (i used to play alot of classical violin): rrooyyccee-aaddaaggiioo.html

International TB-303 Day!

Well, sort of. Fiercefish posted that today is International TB-303 day. I asked if this was real, and he replied sort of. Robin Whittle declared International TB-303 day on March 3, 2003, 3/03, get it? The crazy thing is I remember this! I searched the archives and found the post on AH. Title link takes you there. "As mentioned earlier, here http://s8.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1GUJ9UGH6SEHG01VTE4R8RO2N6 is a demo of my acidlab modded TB-303, for this demo I just concentrated on the FM, decay, and overdrive mods. It is a 2 bar pattern running with a 606 as a timekeeper, no eq was used just the 606 into the mix in on the 303 recorded in mono into audacity on my mac, I added a bit of reverb to the whole mix and did a small amount of audio editing to add a little interest.

I wanted to keep the sound fairly "acid" for this demo so the tweaking is limited to a slight extension of what a standard 303 can do, the acidlab can do some seriously crazy stuff especially with the controls at the extremes and I have recorded about 1 hours worth of other settings but need to edit them down to smaller snippets, they will be just the 303 on its own (no 606) and with no fx or eq, I should post them sometime in the next week.
