The Phonogene

The Phonogene from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.

"This piece features the Make Noise Phonogene module in 5U format from Voltergeist. The Phonogene is a sampler module that allows you to process the sample in various ways under voltage control. All of the sounds (including clicks and pops) are generated from the short voice sample heard at the beginning. A DotCom S/H module is being used, with a triangle wave from a Q106, to generate control voltage to the vary-speed control of the Phonogene. No other modules were used to generate sounds. A tape echo pedal was used on the output of the STG mixer.

For those wishing to learn more there is a decent manual on the Make Noise site and Vince from Voltergeist made a very comprehensive demo video that is on EweTube."

Cherry Audio Moog Series III VST Spotted

This one was spotted and sent in via electraumatisme.

Note the Cherry labels at the bottom of each module. It looks like Cherry/MRB

You can see it for yourself at 24:04 in this video.

Update: according to Atomic Shadow this actually appears to be the currently availabile VM900 Collection.

You can find videos dating back to 2021 here, intro video here. I'm not finding any videos mentioning the VM900 after 2021.

If anyone knows otherwise, feel free to leave a comment.

Update2 via Robert Saint John in the comments: "[Atomic Shadow] is correct, this is simply the Cherry Audio/MRB bundle of VM900 modules for Cherry Audio’s Voltage Modular platform, released in October 2021. We have not announced any plans to release this as a standalone or VST instrument"

KnobCon 2012 Walkthrough Video by Atomic Shadow

KnobCon 2012 from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.

"A fly over of the 2012 KnobCon event held in Chicago on September 14th and 15th. Every type of synth module under the sun was in attendance. This is not an artistic statement. It is simple gear porn."

Atomic Shadow's DO3 for The Museum of Science Daphne Oram Remix Project

Listen at The Science Museum
(you can also vote for the track)

"Sonic sculpture for the Museum of Science remix content, assembled from the original Oram tracks with two additions. One used vintage sine wave generators and effects pedals, recorded in real time. The second took one of the stems and ran it through a tape echo pedal where the sound was 'played' by changing the feedback and other controls in real time. The other parts were reversed, slowed down, chopped up and pitched and arranged just as they did in the days of tape recorders and scissors. Despite the advantage of doing the editing with a computer it still took about two weeks to get the composition in order."

Atomic Shadow's sinewave generators have been featured in Hollow Sun's Music Laboratory Machines. You can find his other music at http://atomicshadow.bandcamp.com/

Atomic Shadow Mobile Command Center Test

Mobile Command Center Test from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.

"This is a live in the studio test of the Mobile Command Center, a system that I have been putting together for performing live.

Each source is processed by a dedicated effects unit. The effects include a POD HD500, Zoom G3, Lexicon Vortex, Moog ring modulator and Strymon El Capistan.

Blinky lights added for visual interest."

Hollow Sun's BROKEN and INTERFERENCE

via Hollow Sun
"As dysfunctional as it looks, 'Broken' [demos online] is, errmmm, well .... broken! It makes the sounds of dying valve audio machinery squealing and writhing in pain. And you can add further torture to the sounds with the application of the 'Mangle' functions as well as low and highpass filtering, envelope shaping, multi-wave LFO, phase shifting, echo and convolved reverb including vintage springs."

"Wow, It is great..!!! It is going to be very useful... Thank You... All the best, Jean Michel Jarre"

Interference
"Remember those days when we wrestled with mains hum, component and tape hiss, etc.? Well now, in our santisied world of digital audio, you can put all that crud back into your recordings, the turd back into your polish, with the flick of a few switches.

Broken and Interference are available now, priced $8 and $4 respectively. "

This one in via Atomic Shadow
"The Broken instrument started out as samples from my malfunctioning Hammond Solobos." You might remember Atomic Shadow's HP Oscillators featured in Hollow Sun's OSCILLOSINE. See the Hollow Sun label below for more.

Unobstructed Time by Atomic Shadow

Unobstructed Time from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.

"This semi-improvised piece is recorded live, in one take. It features the equipment that is being evaluated to build a mobile Command Center. The EMW200/300, small format Mackie mixer , and effects pedals by Electro Harmonix, Line 6, Strymon and two Korg Kaoss pads. The warty cymbal has a pickup on it and is being processed by pedals and one Kaoss pad. The reverb spring that is just off camera is running through the other Kaoss pad. The EMW is being processed by a Line 6 POD that is being controlled with a foot pedal."

Atomic Shadow Studio Pics & New Website

"Last month the lab experienced upheaval in the form of a major remodel. The ergonomics of the space had left much to be desired. As work began on the Twelve Full Moons album in January of 2011, I needed somewhere to mount the two Hewlett Packard sine wave generators that I planned to use on the album. I had a large metal rack that was sitting in a shed and it was pressed in to service and placed to the left of the desk in the room. Things got out of hand from there and over the next year it grew to four 45 U rack units. More is more!..."

You'll find the full post including more pics at Atomic Shadow's new website. Note the EMW-200 and the Synthesizers.com modular. If you missed it, be sure to check out the EMW-200 review & the EMW-300.

EMW-200 Improv by Atomic Shadow

EMW-200 Film from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.

http://www.atomicshadow.com/
http://www.electronicmusicworks.com/

"An improvisation featuring the EMW-200 from Electronic Music Works. No external effects or processing was used. The main patch contains three sub-patches. The first is the S/H module controlling VCO2 and then fed to the delay module. The second has the triangle wave on the master oscillator and VCO 1 ring modulating in the wave shaper section. And finally the noise output is being low pass filtered and then being ring modulated by the dedicated LFO (which is also modulating the pitch of VCO 1). Each sub-patch is routed to the left and right channels of the six channel mixer.

I am struck by the warm and organic tones that can be generated by this instrument, as well as the sometimes unexpected sounds that can result from very small changes in the controls. In an upcoming video I will be pairing the EMW-200 with some external effects."

I think I spy a MATRIXSYNTH card on the very lower right of the video frame. :)

Atomic Shadow Panoramic Wave Generator Now Available

Previously featured here and here, the Atomic Shadow Panoramic Wave Generator is now available.

"The Panoramic Wave Generator is a unique sampler instrument for Kontakt.

The sounds that come with the PWG made good use of my collection of field recordings collected over many years. There are machines in action and machines in the their last moments of dying agony.

There are many sounds that use the Command Center’s collection of exotic old test gear. Sine and square wave generators, modular filters, ring modulators and a good dose of some top secret gear that cannot be disclosed. Some of the sounds are very playable as pitched instruments while others are far out in soundscape territory. There are sounds that hiss. Sounds that crackle and moan.
To get the full benefit it is suggested that you have the full version of Kontakt although it will work in time limited fashion in the free Kontakt player in demo mode. This does not work at all without Kontakt."

Gorgon Hat by Atomic Shadow

Gorgon Hat from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.

"This piece features the RCA tone burst generator, played live through effects pedals (including Strymon El Capistan). The EMW-200 is playing through a Lexicon Vortex unit. The modular synth is being controlled by the SynthCube 266 SOU and clocked with a Krisp 1 LFO. The other modules in the patch are the STG Soundlabs Sea Devils filtering a DotCom Q106, Analog Crafstman Gristlier filtering the SSL DDVCO. Both Oscillators are routed through the Krisp 1 Ring Mod. The modular patch is mixed through the STG mixer on it's way to the Yamaha AW-1600 recorder. PSP Audioware plugs used in the mixing stage included the Spring Box and their excellent new EMT 244/245 reverbs.

No Gorgons were harmed in the making of this picture."

Hungry Ghost Moon by Atomic Shadow

Hungry Ghost Moon from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.

http://www.atomicshadow.com/

A film by Jeff Gustafson. Last July, while working on the Twelve Full Moons album, I found myself on the Salt Flats. The P-51, F4 and Power Plant chopper were used in a Breitling watch ad. The sights sounds around the shoot were captured with a Zoom recorder and horribly abused with Kaoss pads, looped, slowed down and run backwards. The HP sine wave generators make an appearance along with Moog and Pigtronix ring modulators.
