Bastl's Microgranny Gets a Facelift

video upload by Bastl Instruments

Microgranny Monolith - The Final Form of the Microgranny

"Granny’s back with a brand new lid: our classic desktop granular sampler gets a facelift, bringing her into the modern age with enough usability upgrades to last another lifetime, rehomed in sleek black PCB-material to help it look the part amongst the latest in the Bastl range.

"Granny’s back with a brand new lid: our classic desktop granular sampler gets a facelift, bringing her into the modern age with enough usability upgrades to last another lifetime, rehomed in sleek black PCB-material to help it look the part amongst the latest in the Bastl range.

The Microgranny 2.0 that you know and love is still there under the facelift: lo-fi sound full of character packed into a hands-on monophonic desktop sampler that is a joy to experiment with. Plug in your microSD card loaded with 8-bit samples, or record them live through the in-built mic or line input, and jump into play with 6 samples right under your fingers, or instantly recall up to 60 saved presets."

Playability is paramount
The two-tier menu lets you dart between editing grain size or warping the playback speed, and the new-look tactile knobs grant better control than the previous model. The hazy plastic case is gone, and the PCB case’s sharper text makes the modes under the new and improved buttons more enticing – delve into Randomized mode, Legato playback, or the Instant Loop function to extend the virtually limitless possibilities of the surface controls yet further.

MIDI Control? Yep: play specific grains with keys, control the CC values remotely, even clock-sync loops and grains. Take your Granny for a walk in the park with the battery power, or run it through a wired 9V supply.

Granny comes with gifts
To celebrate the revival of one of our most loved instruments, we pestered Rephlex Records regular and modern-day Synthfluencer Bogdan Raczynski for a custom sample pack full of his trademark weird and wonderful sounds. Granny Reloaded comes with it pre-installed, giving you a fun and formidable toolset from the moment you power up.

Features
monophonic mono sampler

One Small Synth, Ep. 8: Bastl Microgranny

Published on Oct 14, 2018 Aidan Burns-Fulkerson

"This is the eighth installment in a micro-series diving deep into my collection of very small synthesizers and samplers. Each episode will explore one little music machine. There will be no talking, just music or noise, depending on the synth in question and your personal taste in sound.

The Bastl Microgranny is the most recent addition to my tiny synth family. It is a monophonic granular synthesizer/sampler, meaning that it can chop up samples into minuscule bits and play those bits back in different ways. It’s a really remarkable little device that can create crunchy and gritty renditions of any sound. It’s also able to interface with midi devices, allowing it to be played like any monophonic synth, using a midi keyboard or sequencer for control. For this demo, however, I’m going to stick with using the Microgranny as a stand-alone device to highlight its sound mangling abilities."

Bastl Instruments NEWS at Superbooth 2017

via Bastl Instruments:

"We have a lot of exciting news to share at Superbooth 2017 - finally our flagship effects processor Thyme comes to life! Peter Edwards a.k.a. Casper Electronics will show his new invention: a portable, experimental synth called the softPop. We have a new eurorack module drum pad interface Kong. Dude is a new portable mixer with concept of modularity in mind. We are starting to offer our trusty microGranny as a DIY kit and we will also show the aluminum panel designs for our Eurorack line of modules for the first time. And as the Bastl community is growing we have more updates in the wide range of activities that we make, too.

The Thyme effects processor [see here for a Superbooth video] will finally scrap off its vaporware label at Superbooth, where we will give the first public demo in two years after announcing an early prototype back in 2015. The Thyme is best described as a sequenceable robot operated digital tape machine. With a lot of parameters at hand it enables the exploration of all the time based effects and the vast space in between their classical multi-effects categories! Each of the 9 different parameters (Tape Speed, Delay Coarse & Fine, Feedback, Filter, extra heads Spacing and Levels, Dry Wet Mix and Volume) has a dedicated and very flexible modulation source - called the Robot - which can be phased out differently for left and right channel to create psychedelic new sound effects. The Robot can either be an LFO with many different waveshapes, external CV source or an envelope follower to enable effects reacting to dynamics. On top of everything there are 8 buttons to select a preset and those presets can be sequenced by a built in meta sequencer. The Thyme is ready for production and pricing and availability will be announced in May 2017.

softPop is a playfully organic, semi-modular light and sound synthesizer with wide variety of sounds: from random dripping water pops to heavy subtractive basslines. Its fully analog core consisting of heavily feedbacked system of dual triangle-core oscillator, state variable filter and sample and hold is played through an intuitive interface of 6 faders that provides countless combinations which can be explored by anyone. It can also process external audio thru the filter while using the envelope follower to intuitively synchronise to the incoming signal. The analog soul is enhanced by a quantize feature (auto-tune) and pattern generator with two memories A and B. For adventurous and courageous souls there is a secret chamber in the back for hacking & modding. We will launch the pre-orders in a couple of weeks with price somewhere below 300 eur.

KONG

The expressiveness of a drumming performance and the freedom of a eurorack modular synthesizer finally have a dedicated interface! Kong is a dual drumpad interface that amplifies the drumpad signal and converts it to trigger and velocity CV signals. The Gain knob helps to amplify signal from any drumpad and serves as a sensitivity setting for the velocity, too. The whole architecture is fully analog and the Velocity CV signal is generated by sample and hold circuit with extremely low drift which makes it perfect for controlling crazy patches by hitting a bunch of drumpads. Kong is available NOW for preorder from noise.kitchen for 109 eur without tax. Preorders will ship in June.

Dude is a portable battery operated 5 channel audio mixer with mini jack inputs and output. Each channel has a dedicated mute button and up to +20dB gain to boost weak signals or saturate line level signals. It is a monophonic mixer but can drive your headphones and therefore its perfect for small portable rigs or submixes on stage. It runs on four AA batteries (or external powersupply) and it is almost as small as its batterypack. Because each channel has enough gain that it can be turned into tone generator by feeding the output back to an input thru a passive eq and other simple circuits. The first batch of the Dude is available NOW from noise.kitchen for 75 eur excluding tax.

microGranny2 as a DIY kit

We have announced the microGranny2 about 3 years ago and it still is very popular machine. After several updates we can finally offer it as a DIY kit! microGranny is a granular sampler with built in microphone that operates samples on a microSD card. It is available NOW from noise.kitchen for 130 eur excl. tax!

Aluminum panels for Eurorack modules

We dedicated a lot of effort to make our wooden panels look and feel great. Now after quite some requests from people we finally found a manufacturing partner for the aluminium panels that meets our high expectations. We are using silkscreen printing in between of the anodizing phases. This method bakes the color perfectly into the material making the colour full, rich and yet very durable!

The modules will be gradually available from selected retailers from 1st May 2017. Note: the wooden panel version of the modules will NOT be discontinued

Bastl Instruments

Price excluding tax: 239€ - comes to $283.44. Pics with press release below.

"Midilooper is a device that listens to MIDI messages (control information about notes, dynamics and other parameters) and loops them in a similar way an audio looper would loop pieces of audio. However, loops of MIDI messages remain in the control domain, which means a lot of other processes can happen on top of them - timbre modulation, envelope adjustments etc.

"Bastl is more than excited to announce the Midilooper! Rather than being a sequencer, it is a device inspired by audio looper style workflow with a really fast, performative, single gesture interface.
Looping is a blazing fast way of music making and looping in the control signal domain is a key feature that allows for all remaining parameters of your device to be tweaked and modulated on top of the looped sequence... or MIDI CC looped!

Midilooper has been in development for over 3 years and several iterations of the control interface and connectivity have been extensively tested within the context of a live performance. It has the ability to bring a live setup or a studio to new life and make you explore your gear in a refreshing, hands–on manner.
Midilooper can be synchronised to MIDI or analog clock and it can also run on its own (tap tempo/free running). It has 3 voices that can each be assigned to a different MIDI channel, allowing it to control and loop 3 individual units of gear. Each voice can be individually recorded, muted, overdubbed, or cleared.

Midilooper also offers some basic processing of the recorded information: transposition, velocity locking and shifting, quantisation, shuffle, humanisation (random variations of velocity), adjusting the length of the loop, or doubling and halving of playback speed.

In addition, it features CV and trigger inputs for seamless integration with modular synths: reset, retrigger, velocity, and transpose. It can also be controlled with foot pedals.

Stay tuned to Bastl Instruments YouTube channel for more walkthrough videos. Price excluding tax: 239€

Musikmesse 2014: Bastl Instruments Trinity Drum and Microgranny 2 0

Published on Mar 15, 2014 Analogue Zone Showroom / Hangszer·34 videos

"Analogue Zone Modular Synth Store presents:

Bastl Instruments

Bastl Instruments is new brand for electronic hand-made musical instruments which continues the instruments tradition set up by Standuino.

microGranny 2.0 is monophonic granular sampler. It reads wav samples from microSD card and applies granular algorithms to them. You can also adjust start, end, sample rate (tuned or free run), crush and envelope (attack release). MIDI Input allows external control of all parameters as well as transposition of the samples, or playing individual grains by different keys.

Trinity is universal musical instrument and original sounding modular groovebox. It can function as any type of digital synthesizer, sequencer, controller, arpeggiator or almost anything that can be programmed into a micro-controller. Trinity is designed to be connected and combined with other Trinities of different functions in a chain, so you can create your own music making environment. It is ready to communicate with the outer world via MIDI and different sync and CV methods using MIDI Bastl. We are musicians passionate of exploring new fields of sonic experience -- we already developed 4 different instruments for Trinity which work great together. They are sequencer, drum synthesizer, polyphonic synthesizer and monophonic FM synthesizer....and there is many more to come!

Meet Bastl's BASIL - Unique Yet Flexible Stereo Space Delay

video upload by Bastl Instruments

"Basil is a compact, yet flexible, digital stereo delay module built on the Bastl Pizza platform. It offers clean delay, as well as lo-fi flavors, and its Space section opens the doors to exploration far beyond simple delay territory. The Basil delay buffer modulates really well, allowing to recreate most classic time-based effects, such as chorus, flanger, vibrato, pitch shifter, reverb, and stereo widener, among others, and navigate between them with just a few performative gestures."

How to Install Basil FW to PIZZA

"This video will show you how to install an alternative FW to your PIZZA.
This way you can demo our new Basil Flexible Stereo Delay."

We are thrilled to showcase our latest innovation, Basil, at Superbooth 2023 (booth 0400). Basil is a flexible delay module that offers endless possibilities for creative exploration. Additionally, we will be displaying our new 4-channel dynamic VCA mixer, Aikido, and 5-channel desktop stereo mixer, Bestie, both of which were released earlier this year. We will be also featuring the new facelift of our best-seller granular sampler, Microgranny Monolith. If you wish to reserve a slot at our booth for filming/interview/chat, please put your name in this table.

Basil is a compact, yet flexible, digital stereo delay module built on the Bastl Pizza HW platform. It offers clean delay, as well as lo-fi flavors, and its Space section opens the doors for exploration far beyond simple delay territory. The Basil delay buffer modulates really well, allowing to recreate most classic time-based effects, such as chorus, flanger, vibrato, pitch shifter, reverb, and stereo widener, among others, and navigate between them with just a few performative gestures. Basil is ideal for clean effects, ambient washes, glitchy sound design, or distorted drones. With its V/Oct input, fine delay tuning, and filter in the feedback path, it can also be effectively used as part of a Karplus-Strong synthesis voice. Even the feedback amount is compensated with the shortest delay times to maintain constant decay characteristics when changing pitch.

To enhance your experience with the product release, we have produced a mesmerizing short film that dives into the themes of time, transformation, feedback and states of consciousness altered via time-based effects. The animation for this film was crafted by Pipe & Pallet, with an accompanying soundtrack by Oliver Torr.

Since Basil is based on the same 8HP HW platform as the Pizza oscillator, owners of either module can easily interchange their firmware using the simple firmware update procedure. We will not be selling extra faceplates, but we will open-source the production and vector files for all the modules based on the Bastl Pizza platform. After some refinement, we plan to open-source both the code and the schematics of the module so that users can hack their own Pizzas.

Basil is available to order now via our B-Shop or our dealer network. Shipping early-mid June 2023

Priced at 267 Eur excl. VAT

More on Basil

Basil delay time features stereo spread and fine-tune components, and can be synchronized to the clock via the Sync jack. The feedback knob has two sides - simple feedback and ping pong mode, where the Left and Right channels cross-feedback.

The Space section brings a variety of flavors to the table! The Blur function provides two ways to diffuse the delay – either directly or in the feedback path, tilting the Basil delay towards the realm of experimental reverb machines. The feedback Filter offers low-pass and high-pass modes that can make the sound brighter or darker. Taps are multi-taps with either odd or even spacing, adding density to your delays and reverbs.

The assignable CTRL knob and CV allow you to modulate any of the many parameters (time, stereo, fine, dry/wet, feedback, speed, freeze, lo-fi, blur, filter, and taps) and tailor the Basil delay to your preferred use.

The Speed section allows for longer delay times by running the buffer at half speed or – in the extended range – at quarter and eighth speeds. This approach creates octave jumps, ensuring the delays remain in tune with your material. It is also great for creating drone layers. Because the sample rate goes very low at lower speeds, Basil brings in a low-pass anti-aliasing filter that removes high frequencies. However, you can also turn the filter off with the LO-FI setting and enjoy some downsampled goodness at lower speeds.

The Freeze function treats the delay buffer as a read-only sample loop that can be layered with the incoming signal. You can sync it and use all the other modifications with it as well.
