A DARK PLOT OF LAND
Catalogue Four

Label: Outsider Sound Design
Catalogue Number: ADPOL-C4
Format: Digital Download

Modern experimental music from 'a dark plot of land'

Curated from original source material, this catalogue of music was arranged and completed in 2018. It explores altered states of consciousness through metaphoric sound association.
Removes context through highly abstract methods including: destructive processing, intuition, improvisation, structure, and chance synchronicity.

It is pivotal for the listener to understand that this work was created with serious, psychological intent. It is not a passive listen. Meaning is purposefully superimposed into the sound aesthetic. The listener is challenged to interpret into their own individual context.

Technical information. Equipment used.
Standard and microtonal custom midi guitars
Roland VG-99 guitar processor
Haken Continuum fingerboard
Kyma sound design environment
Eurorack format synthesizer
Assorted audio effects units
Various computer audio processing software

Analogue Solutions Now Available in Black

via Analogue Solutions:

"Limited Edition Colossus (in black) is now available!

👉 Contact us for more information or visit the AS website for reservation and purchase info (see below)

http://www.colossus-synth.com"

Update: video & description added below.
video upload by Analogue Solutions

"This is a limited edition black version of the classic Colossus synthesizer!

We have chosen some of our favourite circuits from our own large back catalogue synths such as Polymath, Telemark and Vostok.

Colossus is not a Synthi 100 clone - all circuits are non-EMS, Analogue Solutions’ design.

The original Synthi was so large it wouldn’t fit through a standard doorway. We didn’t make that mistake but don’t underestimate its size. It will be prominent in your studio, or art gallery!

It is sized at 1585mm wide, 700mm deep and 655mm high and weighing in too big to fit on the scales. It’s not entirely practical, but to be impressive physically and in sound. It will be an awesome centrepiece for your studio.

As Above So Below - No Piano Music

video upload by Marc Mennigmann

New release from supporting member, Marc Mennigmann.

"'As Above So Below - No Piano Music' is available on BandCamp now!

90% of the things you will hear on this album is a grand piano. But it is not piano music. The piano was played using several playing techniques, mostly without using the keys. The sounds were sampled and then played using algorithmic, generative computer programs which are fed with my piano playing. So most of this music is no music at all. It just pretends to be music. It follows some rules that make you think that it's music, but it isn't.

If you are one of my wonderful subscribers, this is a free addition to your catalogue. Thank you for your support!

All my best,
Marc

JS Bach prelude from BWV 998, for Waldorf Iridium

Brittle stR music

"Originally for lute, this is the first movement of 'Prelude, Fugue and Allegro' of BWV 998 (from the Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis catalogue). It's produced in Logic using a single voice in the Iridium. The 3 oscillators are respectively a square wave, a wavetable and a 'kernel' (or FM synth). Velocity on a 12dB/oct filter envelope provides expression, and big tempo changes give rubato and pauses before recapitulations of the main theme. I've avoided my usual sweeping oscillator mods and other fun electronica artefacts for this one! More than with any other composer, Bach's music lends itself to instruments that were invented later - piano, guitar, synth etc - but a light touch works better IMO."

Patch Notes: MarcelDune

FACTmagazine

"MarcelDune’s music occupies two poles, playing off hard-hitting rhythms against abstract, woozy sound design. At the heart of her practice is a modular system, with digital effects and field recordings adding character to her sci-fi techno productions.

On this episode of Patch Notes, MarcelDune records a 12-minute live set that explores the breadth of her sound, moving between ambient textures, chaotic tones and relentless modular drums with ease.

Fact Live: Paranoid London

FACTmagazine

"The third in our new series of live sessions filmed behind closed doors by Fact at 180 The Strand is a cathartic set of raw acid house and techno from Paranoid London, the hardware-heavy project of Quinn Whalley and Gerardo Delgado.

When Paranoid London first emerged in 2007, their music provided a gritty counterpoint to the European minimal sounds and disco edits that proliferated at the time, and their vinyl-only releases gained them underground success at a time when the format was in decline.

In the 13 years since, the project has been host to a rotating cast of guest vocalists, including A Certain Ratio’s Simon Topping, Arthur Baker, Josh Caffe and the late trans activist and DJ, Bubbles Bubblesynski. On this performance they’re joined by regular collaborator Mutado Pintado with visuals by Bob Jaroc.

Classic drum machines and synths such as the Roland TR-808, TR-909 and SH-101 lie at the heart of their setup, with acid lines provided by the Cyclone Analogic TT-303 Bass Bot. Effects come from a host of cheap Korg Monotron Delay units, which slather vocals and synths in a grimy echo.

Paranoid London’s latest album, 2019’s PL, is available now. You can find the rest of their catalogue, including their ongoing series of edits, at Bandcamp."

Patch Notes: Minimal Violence

FACTmagazine

"Minimal Violence are Ash Luk and Lida P, a Vancouver duo who make raw, hardware-based techno with shades of industrial and ’90s trance. Since emerging in 2015 they’ve appeared on labels such as Technicolour, Lobster Theremin and Berlin institution Tresor, which this year released the first in a three-part EP series.

On this episode of Patch Notes, Ash offers an early preview of Minimal Violence’s new live direction with a solo live set from their studio. 'What I’m using here is mostly what we would use for our live set with a few additions,' Ash says.

'MPC1000 at the helm of everything, sequencing the kick, breaks, synths and other sounds. The MPC is the key point of construction for moving from track to track in the set, it allows for the flexibility of bringing different parts in and out but still provides some structure as to different pre-selected segments available per section.

'The 707, 606 and 909 are all synced via the MPC but programmed externally so allow for some more fluidity throughout the live sets. The Moog DFAM is a new addition to add more texture to employ in parts to flow when moving from track to track. Additionally the DFAM is sending out a VCA to the modular to rhythmically change the texture and pan of the effects.

'For external effects we have our modular setup on one send and the OTO BIM delay on the other. We’re only starting to tap into the world of modular I but want to continue integrating it into the live setup, the focus is on employing the modular setup to process external signals to create and modulate otherwise unimaginable effects that bring in their own creative flow to the mix.

Phase Two of their three-EP series is planned to drop before the end of year on Tresor. Phase One is available now and you can find the rest of their catalogue on Bandcamp.

Arturia Minibrute 2S - Let's Build a... West Coast-y, Buchla-ish, Music-Easle-eque Patch!

Oscillator Sink

"The mysterious world of Buchla synths is a quiet fascination for me - one that, out of necessity is conducted from a distance - as the instruments that make up their catalogue are eye-wateringly expensive.

For me, the Buchla Music Easel, seems to typify the whole mysterious vibe; it looks like some kind of retro-futuristic control panel in an alien spaceship - and sometimes sounds like one, but if we look at the specs on paper we have: two oscillators, a wave folder, a low pass gate, an envelope, a source of randomness, a 5 step sequencer and a cool pressure sensitive keyboard…. Well the Minibrute 2S has a lot of that, and I reckon we can bodge the rest of it so… Let's see if we can apply some Music Easel magic and build a 'West Coast Brute" of sorts!

Here's a video about establishing an "initialised patch" as a starting point:"

Arturia Minibrute 2 / 2S - Let's Build an... Initialised Patch

"In 'Episode 0' of the series where we build patches from scratch on the Arturia Minibrute 2 and 2S, we discuss how we set up a good starting point for all our future patches!

Transparency Notice: The MicroBrute 2S and DrumBrute Impact were kindly provided to me by Arturia."

Patch Notes: Ennio Morricone Tribute

TheEndorphines

"Ennio Morricone tribute patch based on the Good, Bad & Ugly soundtrack.
In this patch we are using Furthrrrrr generator with exponential FM to add inconsistent pitch drift in order to make the sound more realistic and human."

---

As many of you likely know, film composer Ennio Morricone passed away on July 6. He didn't work primarily with synths but he did incorporate them. He actually composed the soundtrack for The Thing using synths as a tribute in a sense to John Carpenter. From The Vinyl Factory:

"This is an unusual release in the soundtrack back-catalogue in it being a rare instance where John Carpenter chose not to score one of his own films, and where Morricone experiments with synth-tones in his composition, seemingly in acknowledgement of Carpenter’s style.
There’s a lot of muddied details that surround it, but as the story goes Carpenter was disappointed with what his musical hero (he got married to the music of Morricone) presented and embellished what appeared in the cinema with some of his own fills, leaving out a great deal of what Morricone had prepared. The LP however, includes tracks selected by Morricone and trumps his other works for horror in suspense and execution. Nominated for a razzie. Go figure."

I read that Ennio Morricone believed a synth shouldn't be used to recreate real world instruments, but rather as it's own instrument. via Wired:

"To create that original score for Tarantino, Morricone largely turns to tools unavailable in 1964, like synthesizers, which drive the tense, gloomy eight-minute overture. (Morricone’s compositions for The Thing, used in The Hateful Eight, were some of his first work with synths in the early 1980s.)

The experimenting composer isn’t above technological advances, but he’s quick to warn young composers of the dangers of seductive technology. “Electronic instruments have to be used to justify something that doesn’t exist, not to replace for instance an orchestra,” he says. “If you use the synth just to recreate the sound of an existing musical instrument, it is wrong. But if you use the synth to create sound that doesn’t exist, that’s a very wise way to use it.”

So technology can be a cautious step forward in music composition, as long as you don’t use it as a crutch. “If the composer—or the so-called composer—becomes a kind of slave of technology, if he uses technology in a toxic way, this is not progress,” he says. As Morricone sees it, technology’s role in music is “a moral stance, not only a technical stance.” A broader variety of possible sounds can benefit a soundtrack, of course, but the ease of synthetic sounds is not worth the loss of the authentic and everyday. Use technology to add a human whistle or the real tick of a watch, but don’t replace them with false facsimiles. As he describes it, in composing, “everything must start from your soul, from your heart, even when you use technology.” In his score for The Hateful Eight, Morricone is, in part, reusing music composed for a thriller in 1982 for a Western in 2015—but 70 years after his first Western, he insists he’s still experimenting, from the heart."

P.S. Thanks to gridsleep for requesting a post on Ennio Morricone and TheEndorphines for the video. I was hoping something to pay proper tribute would come in and it did.

Against The Clock: Bloody Mary

FACTmagazine

"Against The Clock is a series where we give an artist 10 minutes in the studio and see what they come up with.

Bloody Mary has been a fixture on Berlin’s techno scene since she arrived in the city from France in 2005. In 2010 she founded her own label, Dame-Music, which has released music from artists like KiNK, Thomas P. Heckmann and Innerspace Halflife.

In the studio and on stage she makes use of classic gear such as the Roland TR-909 and TR-707 drum machines with modern equipment like the Mode Machine Xoxbox and Dave Smith Pro 2. We paid her a visit to see what kind of techno she could create in just 10 minutes.

Bloody Mary’s latest release, a collaborative EP with Cardopusher, is out now. Find the rest of the Dame-Music catalogue at Bandcamp.

Original 1970's MOOG 1120 Voltage Pedal Controller

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The 1120 appeared around 1973 and continued in production with revisions at least until 1978, by which time it had been joined in the Moog catalogue by the 1130 Percussion Controller, the 1121 footswitch, the 1150 Ribbon Controller and the 1125 Sample & Hold.

The 1120 is a very sturdily built all-metal foot pedal, has a 9V battery internally (or can use a 9V mains transformer) and has two quarter inch jack outputs marked Output and Aux Out - in fact these are sending exactly the same output, from near 0V to near 9V.

The 1120 was intended for use with the Moog Sonic 6, MiniMoog, Moog Modular systems and other products, so it's an ideal addition to any Moog collection. However it's perfectly compatible with any modern CV-based modular system including Eurorack systems, creating volume swells, filter wah effects, VCLFO speed changes or anything you need.

This one's in extremely good condition with no significant wear to the Moog logo and underside label."
