Moog Semi-Modular Synthesizers: Interconnectivity VI

video upload by Moog Music Inc

"Two Moog semi-modular instruments, Matriarch and DFAM, play together and with a Make Noise Morphagene processed by the Moogerfooger MuRF.

In this patch, DFAM serves as a master clock, passing through Matriarch’s multiple and syncing to Matriarch’s sequencer. A drumming sample is looped on the Morphagene, tuned by ear to be roughly in time with the DFAM and reset by the DFAM every bar. The Morphagene is filtered by a Moogerfooger MuRF whose pattern rate is tuned by ear to match the DFAM. DFAM generates a simple kick and snare drum pattern, while Matriarch creates a central bass line. Matriarch’s four oscillators are gradually faded in for denser, thicker tones, and stereo filter motion is gently applied."

Moog DFAM! Drummer from another Mother: Bass Drum, Bass Line, and...

Published on Jan 15, 2018 JAkoGreyshire

"A Patch example showing the Moog DFAM as the only sound source creating a Bass Drum, Bass Line and a third part in a groove.

Using a Korg SQ-1 in random mode to sequence the Bass Line.
Moog DFAM's sequencer is playing the Bass Drum.
LFO wave from the Intellijel Dixie II+ is modulating VCO#2 of the Moog DFAM.
Both VCOs from the Moog DFAm are patched out of the DFAM into VCAs and then to the Make noise LxD low pass gate.
LxD is modulated by Maths."

025//A Crumbling World - 10 minutes of dark soundscape (Moog DFAM, 2x Mother 32, Eventide Space)

Published on May 26, 2018 Alastair Wilson

"A dark, semi-self-generating modular patch using 2 Mother 32s and a DFAM sent through an Eventide Space hall reverb and an Eventide Timefactor on tape delay setting.

I've continued exploring the DFAM, and next up on my list of 'to-use' sounds is the growly FM bass that you can get from it; add a bit of noise and suddenly you have a dark soundscape to play with! Although its quite repetitive as my patches go, I liked the feel of it, and detuning the M32's note pitches gave the melody an extra bit of much-needed character to round off the patch.

PATCH NOTES:
The DFAM supplies most of this patch; the 'crunchy' noise comes from noise modulating the filter cutoff, while the growl in the bass comes from frequency modulation of VCO 2 by VCO 1. The lower M32 supplies the melodic notes, with each note detuned slightly by a random stepped voltage. The sequencer is stopped and started randomly to make the melody unbalanced and lurching, and is clocked by the DFAM, (glitched so that it runs at 1/12 the DFAM's tempo). The background high-pitched sounds are made by the top M32. Random stepped voltages from the M32s' Assign outputs control various parameters to make the patch unpredictable."

Moog Sound Studio: 50 Patches for DFAM, Mother-32, Subharmonicon. + Samples. Presets Demo. No talk

video upload by Anton Anru

"Welcome to the soundset for a semi-modular system Moog Sound Studio: DFAM + Mother-32 + Subharmonicon. It is a collection of 50 patches that include basses, drums/percussion, leads, plucks, textures, FXs. There is a wide range of sound colors inside the pack: massive and gentle, aggressive and soft, bright and dull, melodic and inharmonic tones, straight and polymetric patterns.

๐Ÿ”ฎ Get the soundset: https://antonanru.sellfy.store/moog/

Highlights:
✅ high level of interconnection of the synths
✅ thoroughly set parameters
✅ detailed notes for patches full of tips and tricks
✅ audio examples in 4 versions: DFAM only, M-32 only, Subharmonicon only, all together
✅ to recreate these patches, you need up to 17 patch cables + splitter/multiplier («star») or a stackable cable.
✅ one of my hardest work ever, I spent up to 2,5 hours for each patch
✅ FREE BONUS: 200 samples with Scale and BPM (95-128 BPM), Wav 24/44100

The main point of the soundset is the high level of interconnection, not just syncing the synths with independent timbres (individual patches for DFAM, Mother-32, and Subharmonicon are also available on my website). In this patchbook, the timbres of the synths are soldered and can’t exist separately:
๐Ÿ”ธ they modulate each other with LFO and Envelopes
๐Ÿ”ธ a sequence from one synth may change parameters on others
๐Ÿ”ธ triggers interaction, clock/rhythm, run/stop modulations break predictable patterns
๐Ÿ”ธ audio signals from VCOs may be used as modulation sources to create harmonies/intervals or crazy experimental inharmonic tones
๐Ÿ”ธ or they may be used just as audio sources that go to another synth to be processed with its (different) filter and envelope and get the «second life».
DFAM, M32, and SUBH play different and clear roles, it’s not a sound mess, but the synths working in close cooperation.

Moog DFAM: 7-Step Sequencing

Published on Jun 19, 2018 Kris Lennox

"It is often assumed the DFAM can only run 8-note groupings. But it can do anything less than 8. Patching is simple: run the pitch into tempo. This translates to higher pitches being faster/of a shorter duration. So, if you want to omit a step, set the pitch of that step to max and the DFAM will jump by it :)

I've set the pitch of all other steps to be the same (i.e. null value). Pitch is controlled by VCO1. Given all pitches are relatively the same - even if VCO1 changes pitch - the tempo remains consistent. This is a handy trick, as if you try to determine each pitch, the beat pattern will be all over the place.

I overdubbed with a Matrixbrute solo. Very nice & subtle.

DFAM-only audio over on soundcloud:

Given Moog clearly take their stage setting seriously - and insist on placing quasi-philosophical hipster novels with a subtle political undertone in shot, I decided to go for my own setting.

Kierkegaard and Hegel would smack of elitism, so I went for:

1) Pumice stone (unsued)
2) Guidebook for finding dead bodies in Aokigahara Forest (forest visited, but not for purpose of finding bodies. I actually camped in it for a few days. Good story in itself. And this was before the shit American movie)
3) Play-doh scented cologne (used, unsuccessful. But an amusing product nonetheless)

I think I'm getting into the Moog spirit here.

On a serious note - I'm finishing off a tutorial RE the DFAM. Quite long & the accent will likely challenge most. It'll be ready for upload in a day or so.

Weather was terrible today, hence the pensive music. I think I'm actually in love with my Matrixbrute. I hear it speak to me at night. I remember a while back seeing a movie by US artist Corinne May Botz about a mental German woman who was in love with a building. I think this is me, but with the synth.

Vid of insane German woman here - https://player.vimeo.com/video/172224282 [embed below]

Moog DFAM: Modular Grooves Patches/Patterns. No Talk Demo

video upload by Anton Anru

"The new Moog DFAM soundset has been highly requested by my subscribers. The first bank, «Techno Generator», received many positive feedbacks over the past few years.
«Modular Grooves» is a collection of 50 patches + patterns: 17 Percs/Drums, 16 Basses, 17 Synths. It is dedicated to the modular vibe, loved for its analog warm sound, experimental attitude, rich opportunities, unique features and tones, and inspirational workflow.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Get the soundset: https://antonanru.sellfy.store/p/dfam...

๐Ÿ’Ž The presets feature various colors: noisy, detuned, distorted, as well as mild, clean, soft, punchy, dark, bright, deep, and airy.
Some timbres are great to play the first role in tracks or jams, while others will work perfectly as additional parts.
You may use the patches as they are, but I strongly recommend tweaking the knobs to develop the timbre during your performance and get an exciting experience.

๐Ÿ“šThe soundset is presented in the form of PDF-Document. Each page contains notes that explain how the patch works, what parameters are worth tweaking during playback, and how to develop the timbre during a performance. If you make all the settings consciously and try the things mentioned in the notes, you will learn a lot about the synth and discover its true depth.

๐ŸŽง There are audio examples of all patches inside the folder with the soundset.
To recreate these patches you need up to 3 patch cords.

๐Ÿ’ฝ The soundset also includes 24/41000 WAV samples, accompanied by BPM and scale information. You can use them as they are, or you're free to resample, edit, and apply effects. These samples offer a versatile material for your experimentation.

๐Ÿ”” You are listening to demo tracks featuring these presets. I've added other samples, drums and pads, to create a complete musical context. The DFAM sequences can be quite complex, producing various timbres at once, like bass and percussion. To help you distinguish, I've marked the DFAM and ADDITIONAL SOUNDS with different colors.
These ADDITIONAL SOUNDS are not included in the soundset.

Moog Drums (Moog DFAM, Mother-32 & MF Delay)

Published on Feb 15, 2018 HardtekStudios

"The DFAM is producing a hard, synth heavy kick while the Mother-32 is accompanying it with a saw wave & white noise hi-hat running into the MF Delay pedal for some extra movement & groovement. The DFAM is synced to the Mother-32 via the Assign output, with the Mult being used for the DFAM. The DFAM is returning the favor by sharing it's sequencer & Envelopes with the Mother-32."

Moog Sound Studio: DFAM + Subharmonicon. 50 Combo Patches. + Samples. Demo

video upload by Anton Anru

"Welcome to the soundset for a semi-modular system, Moog Sound Studio: DFAM + Subharmonicon.
It is a collection of 50 patches that include basses, drums/percussion, leads, plucks, stabs/chords, generative-style patterns. There is a wide range of sound colors inside the pack: massive and gentle, aggressive and soft, bright and dull, harmonic and dissonant tones, straight and polymetric rhythms.

๐Ÿ”ฎ Get the soundset: https://bit.ly/3x756yg

Highlights:
✅ high level of interconnection of the synths
✅ thoroughly set parameters
✅ detailed notes for patches full of tips and tricks
✅ audio examples in 3 versions: DFAM only, Subharmonicon only, both together
✅ to recreate these patches you need up to 12 patch cords
✅ one of my hardest work ever, I spent up to 2 hours for each patch
✅ FREE BONUS: 150 samples with Scale and BPM (75-126 BPM), Wav 24/44100

The main point of the soundset is the high level of interconnection, not just syncing the two synths with independent timbres (individual patches for DFAM and Subharmonicon are also available on my website). In this patchbook the timbres of the synths are soldered and can’t exist separately:

At the same time, they play different and clear roles, it’s not a sound mess, but two synths working in close cooperation.

๐Ÿ’ฝ Also, there’s a separate folder with WAV samples with the same timbres, with Scale and BPM information. You may use them inside a sampler or DAW if you want 100% same sound as in the examples. Slice them for one-shots or loops, this is a great material for further editing and processing.

The soundset is presented in the form of PDF-Document. Each page contains notes that explain how the patch works, what parameters worth tweaking during the playback, how to develop the timbre during a performance. If you make all the settings consciously and try the things mentioned in the notes, you will learn lots of things about the synth and discover its true depth.

Each patch has audio examples, they help to understand how a patch is supposed to sound. Audio examples for a patch are presented in three variants: DFAM only, Subharmonicon only, and both together.

Apocalyptic synth jam with PWM Malevolent, Meng Qi Wingie 2, Chase Bliss Mood MkII, Zen Delay, DFAM

video upload by Jay Hosking

"Please support my work on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/jayhosking
A song that started as a live, semi-improvised synth jam, and was finished by adding some extra sounds in the box.

I recently bought the Malevolent and Wingie 2 from the same friend, and thought it might be fun to get such different pieces of hardware in the same song. The Malevolent really can get monstrous with its drive/distortion, whereas the Wingie 2 reminds me of MI Rings, bright and ringing, but with tons of playability. From there, I filled out what I needed to quickly improvise, some effects on the synths, and some drums to play with. Finally, I added some extras like guitar and a little more synth after the live performance was captured. Notes below. It's fun to have no sequencers on the table and to just make music by playing the devices.

Meng Qi Wingie 2 via Chase Bliss Mood MkII - stereo plucks
PWM Malevolent via Erica Synths Zen Delay - bass synth wildness
Moog DFAM (x 2) - kick (on one DFAM), hats and snare (on another DFAM) - the DFAMs also had compression, a little stereo delay, etc. in the box (see the Patreon walkthrough vid)
Godin Stadium 59 via Elektron Analog Drive and Strymon Iridium - guitar
Reason Europa - synth pad
Reason Thor - additional bass emphasis on kick drum
XLN Audio Addictive Drums 2 - ride cymbal doubling one DFAM for last chorus

Thanks for listening.

"Today, we're excited to announce that the newest addition to our family of semi-modular synthesizers, Subharmonicon, is now available worldwide.

Subharmonicon is an intensely creative analog synthesizer capable of complex sounds and patterns, yet is incredibly simple to use. With two VCOs, four Subharmonic Oscillators, two 4-Step Sequencers, and four Rhythm Generators, this new musical machine is designed for the exploration of sequences that unfold and evolve over time, spiraling through six-tone subharmonic chords and organic polyrhythms.

Although no patching is required to start creating, Subharmonicon can be patched into itself, expanding its onboard capabilities, or interfaced with Mother-32, DFAM, and other external Eurorack-compatible gear for endless possibilities."

"Subharmonicon is a semi-modular polyrhythmic analog synthesizer that employs a 6-tone sound engine and multi-layered clock generator to explore the world of subharmonics, polyrhythms, and the unique relationships they create.

Subharmonicon’s characteristic sound starts with two analog VCOs and four Subharmonic Oscillators for a total of six powerful sound sources. Each subharmonic tone is mathematically derived from one of the two main VCOs, giving the resulting chord shapes a beautifully coherent quality. Onboard quantization lets you dial in perfect intervals every time with selections for multiple tuning systems. Choose from contemporary Equal Temperament settings, the heavenly intervals of Just Intonation, or the unlimited freedom of no quantization at all.
Animating Subharmonicon’s distinctive chord shapes is done through a polyrhythmic pair of 4-Step Sequencers. Each sequencer is clocked by any or all of four Rhythm Generators that output mathematical divisions of the master tempo. Layer multiple Rhythm Generators on top of each other to create complex polyrhythms and discover inspiring new patterns and styles. Delve into Subharmonicon’s dual Envelope Generators, Moog Ladder Filter, and analog VCA to call up dynamic articulations ranging from lush pads and blurred edges to percussive plosives and ritualistic rhythms.

Although no patching is required to start creating, exploring Subharmonicon’s modular patchbay unlocks worlds of possibilities as you make novel connections and plug into new ideas. The 32-point 3.5mm patchbay can be patched into itself, expanding Subharmonicon’s onboard capabilities, or interfaced with Mother-32, DFAM, and other external Eurorack-compatible gear (MIDI Type A adapter included for DIN to 3.5mm MIDI input). Use as a standalone synth with included +12V DC power supply or simply remove the front panel to install into any Eurorack system.
The Moog Subharmonicon is a versatile analog labyrinth of subharmonically derived synthesis and polyrhythmic sound, equally suited for losing oneself and simultaneously finding oneself."

Scott Collins from Kraft Music conducts a series a sonic experiments with a pair of semi-modular analog synthesizers. The Behringer Neutron and the Moog DFAM (Drummer From Another Mother).

The Behringer Neutron conjures up a broad range of monophonic sounds with finesse and ease, thanks to a semi-modular architecture and an array of realtime controls. Its pure analog signal path is based on authentic VCO, VCF, VCA, and state variable filter designs in conjunction with a flexible, multi-wave LFO and classic bucket brigade delay (BBD). Paraphonic mode allows both oscillators to be controlled independently, while Neutron's onboard patching matrix offers an expanded palette of tonal options. Neutron can be mounted in a standard eurorack case for integration into existing modular systems.

The Moog Drummer from Another Mother is the first addition to the Mother-32 family of synthesizers. This highly interactive, semi-modular analog percussion synthesizer represents a vibrant deviation from the traditional drum machine, offering an expressive hands-on approach to percussive pattern creation activated by an easy-to-use analog sequencer. While DFAM's semi-modular design doesn't require patching, its 24-point modular patchbay provides the ability to create unique sounds and behaviors, synchronize multiple DFAM and Mother-32 units, and integrate into eurorack modular systems.

021//Champion - Moog DFAM and Mother 32s melodic self-generating track

Published on Apr 28, 2018 Alastair Wilson

"A semi-self-generating modular patch using a DFAM sent through an Eventide Timefactor on vintage setting and 2 Mother 32s sent through an Eventide Space modechoverb reverb.

Finally, a DFAM! I've been looking forward to testing it in a self-gen patch for a while. Unfortunately I've discovered it works best by tweaking it manually, and requires other modules to make the most of it, but hey - restrictions make the patch more creative!

The main points of this patch are:
- The 'melody' is the same as the background arpeggio, only with the VCO Pulse out from the Mother 32 patched into the DFAM's Ext Audio input to give it the same rhythm as the drums.
-The Mother 32 playing the bass notes is glitched so that the sequencer runs slower than the input clock (see more here: https://youtu.be/v1y7X1M3iso)
- The VCA decay (the volume fade) of the DFAM is modulated to decrease, causing the drums to turn into clicks.

LXR-02 does the DFAM & beyond (5 kits, no talk)

video upload by Richard DeHove

"I recently made the somewhat rash suggestion to try an LXR-02 emulation of the DFAM. Here it is, sort of. At first I thought I'd use only one voice of the LXR. So in all five kits demoed here Voice 1 or 2 tends to claim almost all the LFOs and be a clock-synced complex sound.

But the LXR-02 and DFAM are such very different beasts it seemed odd to be so restrictive. Instead I've gone for a two or three voice 16-step kit and pattern that attempts to capture the flavor of the DFAM rather than strict technical parameters.

The speed of all parts is 73bpm, a couple of the kits use the internal ping-pong delay, and where there is definite pitch it's always on C - just makes things easier for sampling and later processing.

The result is not exactly DFAMish. Demo 2 even sounds bit chiptune to me. But I've never yet owned any two machines which could exactly replicate the other. As an exercise though it's a bit of fun! All LXR-02 challenges happily considered.

On the plus side the LXR-02's ability to store presets is a massive bonus but the constant click-and-twiddle is no match for the knob-filled interface of the DFAM/Edge.

All five kits are on my Patreon. Unused voices (typically 4, 5 and 6) are mostly on the default sounds.

As usual there is absolutely no extra processing of the sound. It's all completely raw LXR-02.
