Moog Sound Studio: DFAM + Mother-32 Generative Patches. Demo

video upload by Anton Anru

"Welcome to the soundset for a semi-modular system Moog Sound Studio: DFAM + Mother-32.
'DM Generative' is a collection of 25 patches. This genre of sound design is very popular inside modular culture, and Moog Sound Studio suggests a good set of features to enter this club.
Controlled chaos and randomness, probability, non-repetitiveness, tempo break, pattern uniqueness, short and long sounds alternation, unexpected changes, silence and density, harmonic and fx-like tones, freaky splashes during a sequence - all these things are included in the soundset.

That was a hard work. Each patch took me up to 2 hours. I tried to find interesting combinations of settings and patching. Hope you will enjoy the results.

🧊 Get the soundset: https://antonanru.sellfy.store/p/moog...

Generative timbre may be a good addition to (or a lead part of) ambient or techno tracks, jams and performances. You may also record fragments into your DAW or sampler, slice it to one-shots or make loops - you’ll get a unique material for further processing.

The main point of the soundset is the high level of interconnection. In this patchbook, the timbres of the synths are soldered and can’t exist separately:
🔸 they modulate each other with LFO and Envelopes
🔸 a sequence from one synth change parameters on the other one
🔸 gates and triggers interact to break predictable patterns
🔸 audio signals from VCOs may be used as modulation sources to create harmonies/intervals or - crazy experimental inharmonic tones
🔸 or they may be used just as audio sources sent to the other synth for processing with its different filter and envelope, giving them a 'second life’.

The soundset is presented in PDF format. Each page contains notes that explain how the patch works, what parameters are worth tweaking during playback, and how to develop the timbre during a performance. If you make all the settings consciously and try the things mentioned in the notes, you will learn a lot about the synths and discover their true depth.

To recreate these patches, you need up to 15 patch cords.

There are audio examples of all patches inside the folder with the soundset. Audio examples for a patch are presented in three variants: DFAM only, M32 only, and both together.

The patches don't include Mother-32 patterns.

For the video demo, I added delay and reverb to the synths and background pads to put the timbres into a musical context.

The GODFATHER from Enjoy Electronics

video upload by Starsky Carr

"4 track mixer, with delays, compression, filters, LFOs, reverb all put together in a very sexy little package. The Godfather from Enjoy Electronics fits the Moog Studio rack and complements the Mother32, DFAM and Subharmonicon perfectly.

In this I build a track from a simple arpeggio using all the main features piece by piece, which should give a good overall impression of how it all works, and what it all does.

Make Noise Easel: 0coast 0ctrl Strega Dark Noise Modular Jam

video upload by Anton Anru

"I'm having a great time exploring the possibilities of the Make Noise modular system, consisting of Strega, 0-Coast, and 0-Ctrl. While patching, I encountered some clicks, and instead of eliminating them, I embraced them and made them the focal point of my performance. Combined with other noises and effects, these clicks now resemble the sound of rain, creating a unique atmospheric quality. Additionally, I've discovered unexpected rhythmic elements that emerged in the midst of my jamming session. These rhythmic parts have opened up a new realm for experimentation and tweaking.

Moog Sound Studio, Make Noise, Ableton Live Ambient Jam

"Another episode of the Moog and Make Noise modular friendship. This time, Ableton Live and Push are added. Ableton produces bass, bells, strings, background noise FX.
The jam starts softly, and gradually the beat is added. It's transformed from DFAM bleeps.

SoftPop 2 in Session | Bastl x Casper | Noise Kitchen

video upload by NOISE KITCHEN

"Bastl Instruments x Casper Electronics' SoftPopII SP2 is live: 'a radical subtractive synth under the influence of unconventional digital control. It’s a rare beast that excels at both melody and noise in equal measure, ranging from bassline bangers, angelic chord progressions, distorted beats, and water droplets. It can even process inbound audio through the filter and VCA.'

Pretty words, but how does it actually sound in a live setting? In this video by Noise Kitchen staff Lotus Wash and Niels Aras we get right to it — two Bastl Instruments x Casper Electronics SoftPop SP2, one Eowave Quadrantid Swarm, one Moog DFAM, processed through Valhalla Supermassive, nothing else.

Over the 13 minutes multiple different dimensions of sound are explored, from punchy acid rollers and psychedelic slow-motion dancefloor beats, Niels Aras & Lotus Wash guide you through how the SoftPopII can be weaponised for the rave, away from the more ambient electronica applications of the synth heard elsewhere.

Filming & Editing by Adam Kořínek & Vít Linek — many thanks!"

DB-01 sound design from bleedin' obvious to drum phase offset

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Sound design on a one oscillator bass synth? Yes, a surprising amount. A lot is tied up with the sequencer but there are also some pure synth tips in there as well. Some of them, like filter tracking, I've talked about before so perhaps this is like a "best of" compilation. But it still seems to make sense to have them all in one place. For impatient veterans perhaps only the last section on LFO phase will show anything of more hardcore interest.

7/31/23 Metasonix RK8 Filterwall + SSL 1660 + MooSonics Vanilla VCA/Envelope + PCM 70 (gated plate)

video upload by Cfpp0

"A maiden voyage into the latest glory hole from Metasonix."

via Metasonix

"The RK8 contains six bandpass filters, which use vacuum tubes. They are simple 'twin T' designs. Each filter is about one octave lower in range than the one to the left—treble on the left, bass on the right.

Each filter may be manually swept with its own separate tuning knob, over approximately one and one-half octaves. Or ALL the filters may be swept together, using either the 'MANUAL TUNE' knob, or the CV input, which overrides the knob when a patch cable is inserted. Although it is capable of some conventional swept-filter effects, the RK8 is more useful as a complex equalization system or for unique special effects.

Resonance is separately adjustable for each filter. Usually the treble filters will resonate strongly and oscillate under some settings. The bass filters might not. It’s a strange monster.

Inputs and outputs are compatible with all Eurorack and other modular synthesizer equipment. The output peak voltage is limited to the supply rails and can’t damage other modules.

Don’t assume you know what you are getting here—the RK8 is unlike anything else ever marketed. Also don’t expect it to track VCOs. Its voltage-to-frequency curve is 'more or less' hertz-per-volt but can’t really be guaranteed. The six vactrols in each RK8 were hand-matched, but can’t be expected to remain matched, or to track together perfectly.

Again, everything about the RK8 is abnormal. It is not perfectly 'clean' and perfectly 'distortionless', and it cannot be made so. Because it uses vacuum tubes.

It is something you have NEVER seen before. It can NOT be compared to any other product, ever made, PERIOD. Do not walk into this with 'preconceptions'.

Specs: 32HP width Eurorack module, with circuits protruding about 1.5″ or 38mm behind panel. The RK8 uses six 5702 subminiature pentodes, all Raytheon US military surplus from the 1980s. Power supply required is about 600 mA after warmup and 1.4 amps when started cold from +12v, and 10 mA from -12v. Low-cost power supplies are NOT recommended. A spare tube is included, although soldering equipment is needed to replace any of the tubes. They are run very conservatively and will last many, many years."

Metasonix RK8 Filterwall Demonstration 1 SD 480p

video upload by Endmusik Records

"Metasonix RK8 Filterwall prototype demo - video 1.

Modules used: Hexinverter Mutant BD9, Mutant Snare, WMD Crater and Kraken, Moog DFAM, and some live percussion samples from the 1010 music Bitbox.

This is an un-edited 13 minute session of experimentation with direct audio recording to showcase the tonality of the prototype as it processes these sounds. When audio stops and comes back in that is me bringing up a separate mixer channel of the raw audio unfiltered as a comparison, which is then muted out and the RK8 direct channel is brought back in."

video upload by Starsky Carr

See this post for Starsky Carr's initial demo of the EDGE.

"The Behringer Edge is Here! But how does it sound? Here its put up next to the Moog DFAM, and as far as comparisons go this was extremely good fun to make.

The big takeaway for me was... if you haven't got one... YOU NEED 2 :)

Eurorack: Polyrhythms Electronic Jam feat. Metropolix - Subharmonicon - Mother-32

video upload by lucafrancinimusic

"I've programmed two sequences in Metropolix, the second one skips a beat creating an unfinished loop. The Doepfer clock divider spits out triggers at various divisions that clock the DFAM, Mother-32 and the Subharmonicon, which at the end of the video adds its own polyrhytm using the two internal sequences.

Apocalyptic synth jam with PWM Malevolent, Meng Qi Wingie 2, Chase Bliss Mood MkII, Zen Delay, DFAM

video upload by Jay Hosking

"Please support my work on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/jayhosking
A song that started as a live, semi-improvised synth jam, and was finished by adding some extra sounds in the box.

I recently bought the Malevolent and Wingie 2 from the same friend, and thought it might be fun to get such different pieces of hardware in the same song. The Malevolent really can get monstrous with its drive/distortion, whereas the Wingie 2 reminds me of MI Rings, bright and ringing, but with tons of playability. From there, I filled out what I needed to quickly improvise, some effects on the synths, and some drums to play with. Finally, I added some extras like guitar and a little more synth after the live performance was captured. Notes below. It's fun to have no sequencers on the table and to just make music by playing the devices.

Meng Qi Wingie 2 via Chase Bliss Mood MkII - stereo plucks
PWM Malevolent via Erica Synths Zen Delay - bass synth wildness
Moog DFAM (x 2) - kick (on one DFAM), hats and snare (on another DFAM) - the DFAMs also had compression, a little stereo delay, etc. in the box (see the Patreon walkthrough vid)
Godin Stadium 59 via Elektron Analog Drive and Strymon Iridium - guitar
Reason Europa - synth pad
Reason Thor - additional bass emphasis on kick drum
XLN Audio Addictive Drums 2 - ride cymbal doubling one DFAM for last chorus

Thanks for listening.
