Böhm Dynamic 4x9 Vintage FM Synth with Analogue Phaser + Ensemble

RS051.1 Dr Böhm Dynamic 4x9 'No Talking Edition' video upload by rejected synths

"This is a shorter 'No Talking' edit of my video about the Dr Böhm Dynamic 4x9 for those who prefer 'pure' demos without comments. If you like it, go watch the full video, it features additional information about the machine:"

You can find additional demos and a brochure of the 12/24 model in previous posts here.

RS051 Dr Böhm Dynamic 4x9: FM Tank

video upload by rejected synths

Dopfer gets a mention at 2:17.

"Japanese manufacturers today are the big players in the synth world and they have been so for quite a while. But just like there are today, there have always been other choices too. Small manufacturers from many different countries add their own distinctive ‚flavors‘ and always have.

Take for example today‘s synth, the Dr Böhm Dynamic 4x9. It‘s a very German fully programmable 4OP FM-Synth monster. Big and heavy (and some might say over-engineered) like a German sedan. Stuffed to the brim with the latest technology (from the mid 80s) it clearly exceeds the capabilities of most of it’s contemporary peers. Featuring a whooping 36 voices (and 36 part multitimbrality), it is equipped with dual midi ports, lots of outputs, two analog effects boards and abundance of memory for patches and takes up a LOT of parking, ehm, rack space.

The biggest difference of course is, that you don’t have to built you Mercedes or BMW yourself, (and didn’t have to back in the 80s). A Doctor Böhm however was a DIY affair, to own one, you had to built one yourself. It’s no surprise then, that the 4x9 never became too popular or even widely known outside of it’s native country. So it’s actually much less a Beamer and more like a Bitter SC Sedan… or a German tank, if you go by its impressive weight or the thickness of the metal used for the casing ;)"

Pic of the inside below.

"This one‘s a real hidden gem.

Developed in 1987 by the german organ factory Böhm (formerly known as Dr. Böhm) the Dynamic 4x9 is a 9 voice multitimbral 4 Operator FM Synthesizer with Bucket Brigade Effects Phaser and Ensemble. And it‘s got Yamaha (YM2203) ICs.

4x9 means you can route 4 Midi Channels, each with 9 Voices, separately. You got a stereo out and you got four single outs to mix each of the four channels separately.

Dynamic means you got aftertouch and velocity.

The attached video shows all functions and what the 4x9 sounds like.

Device works flawless, some scratches on top, no leaked battery. Looks fine inside.

220 Volt.

For 110 Volts you need a voltage converter"

"Today I travel all the way to Germany to discover Avenger 2, yet-to-be-released plugin synthesizer by Vengeance Sound. More about it 👉https://www.vengeance-sound.com/"

This one was spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child who noted:

"If you remember Vengeance sound, they were makers of some very popular patch collections for synths such as the Access Virus, Waldorf Q, JP-8000, etc in the early 2000's [Virus C & Waldorf Q demos below]. They've since branched out into sample banks and their own VST's such as Avenger."

Introducing Bundle 2 Reason Rack Extensions: Imitor, Loquelic Vereor, and Manis

video upload by Noise Engineering

"Bundle 2 Reason Rack Extensions are here!
Get yours today: https://bit.ly/3HKBk8W

These rack extensions offer the power of our Eurorack modules with the ease of use in Reason. As Bundle 1 is to classic sounds (percussion, gorgeous synths, reverb), Bundle 2 is to sound design and experimentation.

Imitor is a delay designed for experimentation. With up to 32 delay taps and tons of time and tone parameters, Imitor is perfect for creating unusual echoes and experimenting with different delay shapes and patterns. We love Imitor so much that we use it for everything, from long, evolving echoes to effects like comb filtering, chorus, and flanging. Ask your doctor if Imitor is right for you.

Loquelic Vereor is a complex oscillator built around our interpretations of three classic synthesis algorithms (VOSIM, phase modulation, summation synthesis). Like the Loquelic Iteritas module it’s based on, this Swiss army knife of a synth is capable of a range of sounds that are sure to cut through your mix. Loquelic Vereor opens up incredible sound-design possibilities. Its two oscillators modulate each other for sounds you have never thought possible in a DAW. From outrageous, chaotic sounds to wild drum sounds to drones, basslines, and leads, with Loquelic Vereor, you can have it all.

Manis uses saw waves to realize its unparalleled sound. It can go from gritty and dark to smooth and beautiful with the tweak of a couple of sliders. Use Manis for almost anything from alien percussion and industrial grit to unique melodic parts and otherworldly sounds and sound effects."

Yamaha AN1x vs Oberheim OB-X8: Can an analog synth match the glory of a vintage VA???

video upload by thesrabbit

"A bit of a click-baity and facetious title. But there is a goal here. The Yamaha AN1x "005 Soar" preset is magical, majestic, glorious, epic, wonderful, etc. It uses 2 layers, or "scenes" as they're called on the AN1x. 1 layer is a soft floaty arpeggiated line and the other is an epic whooshing pad. It maxes out the use of onboard FX, using chorus, delay, and reverb. The FX mix is obviously very wet too, and maybe too much as it can get kind of muddy.

Anytime I get a synth that can do layers, I try to make a similar patch. It doesn't matter if it's an analog or digital synth. Some synths that I've tried have been the Sequential Rev2, Nord Lead 2, and Roland System-8. Out of those, the System-8 got pretty close, though not quite as epic. The other 2 didn't really impress me at all. So I guess you could say I'm still searching for something that can capture the magic of the original. And by the way, the goal isn't to make them sound exactly the same, but more to get similar epic vibes and feels. I just got the OB-X8, so I had to try it. I added delay and reverb from my go-to Audiothingies Doctor A. The dry/wet mix is about 50/50. The Audiothingies unit just seems to meld well with input sources, rather than taking them over. The arpeggiated layer uses the OB-Xa 24db low pass filter, and the pad layer uses the OB-X SEM 12db low pass filter. A winning combo, if you ask me!

Thoughts and opinions welcome in the comments."

Rare vintage ROLAND Sound Space Processor RSS-8048, 2x ADA-8024, SCC-8004 remote Controller

video upload by Auralcavity

Update via Gavin T in the comments: "I can't find many examples of this from back in the day. But this episode of Tomorrow's World in the UK did show of the technology."

Video description:

"This video features BBC Tomorrow's World's televised demonstration of RSS or 'ROLAND SOUND SPACE' - dubbed "3D STEREO" by presenters Howard Stableford and Kate Bellingham. The programme joined up, via a live audio link, with Mark Goodier's Evening Session on BBC Radio 1 FM. This was in order to demonstrate, to the many viewers without NICAM digital stereo TVs, the then-new innovation of 3D spatial audio rendered with just a pair of speakers. Those who were lucky enough to get a decent FM stereo signal from the station were then able to experience this new sound for themselves.

This upload has been created from a mixture of sources. At the time of the original broadcast I was one of the many who did not have a NICAM TV set (nor, in my case, any video recorder). As I was not present for the live broadcast I'd set my cassette recorder to tape the audio from Stereo Radio 1 FM. Until recently I've only had this tape recording of the event and, frustratingly, none of the video footage.

HOWEVER... 20 years on I've at last happened upon this missing part from someone who, interestingly enough, has been in the opposite situation. He'd never heard the stereo version (even worse!) but possessed the monaural TV footage on video. Unfortunately this had been saved as a very low data rate 'Real Media' (.rm) file. Consequently it is of atrocious visual quality - for which MANY APOLOGIES!! However, as you'll see, it's still worth watching and listening...

I've pieced these two remaining artefacts back together again -- muting the mono video sound and overdubbing / synching the FM stereo audio. However, listeners will notice that during the 'preamble' (up to around 1m29s) the sound is from the mono video only. Unfortunately my cassette recorder only switched on there -- but, thankfully, still in time for the start of the demonstration! Despite the initial lack of stereo I've still managed, for speaker set-up, to doctor the mono audio to pan left around 1m20s; and to pan right around 1m23s.

When the TV demonstration ended, Mark Goodier continued the experiment on Radio 1. Thus, where the video footage ends I've continued the audio: Mark plays a special mix of 'Winter In July' by Tim Simenon's Bomb The Bass. This contains a more subtle use of the RSS effect.

I hope you enjoy this upload despite the video quality."

via this auction

"Here is an extremely rare and perfect working (well tested in my studio) complete set composed of Roland RSS-8048 Sound Space Processor, SCC-8004 Sound Space remote controller and 2x ADA-8024 analogue / digital-analogue converters (from 44.1 to 48 khz) Included in the sale all the original manuals and diagrams plus a professional studio rack. Really cool dimensional machine, a great studio outboard and today very very hard to find especially in these conditions...

Some infos from the web:

Used in cinema producions and pro studio, very expensive at the times: nearly $60k! It come in Near Mint to Mint conditions.. immaculate shape, really as new and perfect working. Introduced in 1991, the Roland RSS 8048 is a modulation effect meant to allow for the reproduction of 'three-dimensional audio' through regular stereo systems. There are several recordings available which have used RSS and these include Bomb the Bass' Winter In July, 'Spiritual High' by Moodswings featuring Chrissie Hynde and many more. The background studio of this machine come from Hugo Zucherelli, who used a dummy head fitted not only with microphones for the ears, but also with transducers to pick up the vibrations through the skull's bone formation. 'Holophonics', as he called his technology, was used on various early 1980s recordings from The CURE and PINK FLOYD (The Wall's helicopter holophonic effect as example). 'Some will clearly hear a sound moving behind them, while others will just hear it moving over their shoulder. Either way, the sound certainly moves outside of the confines of the stereo image.'"

Fripper Tripper (Frippertronics with synths: DSI/Sequential Pro 2, Lyra-8, Boss RE-20, DD-20)

video upload by thesrabbit

"For Black Friday, I bought myself Boss DD-20 and RE-20 delay pedals specifically for exploring Frippertronics. They showed up yesterday and I promptly recorded my first jam. It starts with a simple 2 oscillator drone from the modular running through a spring reverb tank (1 Eowave Titan and 1 Roland 512 VCO) The melodies consist of different patches that I've made on the Pro 2, which is another recent purchase. A little further along I introduce the Lyra-8 into the mix, because anything experimental should probably include the Lyra. Unfortunately I didn't have its output level up high enough, and you can't really hear it in the repeats, which is a shame. Other than not getting output levels matched ahead of time, I'm pretty pleased with the result. The modular, Pro 2, and Lyra are also running through the Audiothingies Doctor A in parallel, which is set to a long ping pong delay and a very long modulated plate reverb. To add some tape warble, I fed an attenuated LFO from the Roland 540 module into the RE-20's expression pedal input, which adjusts the "twist" parameter. Everything runs through the DD-20 first, which has a delay time of 7.1 seconds and is set to the "modulated" delay type, then from there it runs into the RE-20. I wonder what it would sound like if the signal chain was reversed. I bet one could pull off mellotron strings vibes pretty easily with this setup."

Theme Ospital soundtrack - Remix with Roland Jupiter 6

Published on Mar 22, 2020 mima14031985

"This is a different video compared to the others I usually do. I did a complete remix of the Theme Ospital's game soundtrack, using custom sounds that I made with my Roland Jupiter 6. For the drum tracks I used the GM drumset of my Roland RD700GX digital piano. My reference on how these tunes sound is them being played by a Yamaha OPL3 FM synthesizer, driven with the standard Windows driver's GM set, this reflects a bit on how some sounds are made. The electric piano and some basses are examples of that. For other sounds I preferred a more classic analog vibe, brasses and strings/pads are typical of the analog world.

To record the soundtrack I used the game's original MIDI files. I imported them into Reaper and did one track a time by driving the keyboards via MIDI and recording back the audio coming from them. To make the final result easy on the ear I added a bit of reverb to the master mix. You'll notice that some parts are in stereo (mainly the electric piano lines and background pads/strings), for these I recorded the same MIDI track two times, with the Jupiter's master tune a little different each time, and hard panned each of the two parts to left and right. This allows to achieve a cool "wide stereo spread" effect.

For those who own a Jupiter 6, here's the patch dump: https://www.dropbox.com/s/q86wd8d7m4a...

To make the video I chose to do a multitrack oscilloscope show, and I made it using the SIDWiz2 program, made by Rolf R. Bakke and RushJet1. This is a neat little piece of computer jargon! Check their Youtube channels, they're full of those awesome multitrack oscilloscope shows.

Here's the playlist:

13:28 - 5) Fortune
15:49 - 6) Doctor Frog
17:21 - 7) Candyfloss
