Doctor Mix & Anthony Check Out the PWM Mantis Synth | NAMM 2024

video upload by Anthony Marinelli Music

"Join me and my good buddy Doctor Mix as we explore one of the most talked about synthesizers at NAMM 2024. It won't be difficult to discover how much fun we're having checking it out for the first time. I can see that there is still a lot to unpack about this synth and I'm looking forward to doing just that. Please stay on the lookout and tune in to AMM for a much more in-depth look at this super fun and great sounding instrument. It's part of a special family of synthesizers that were all designed with much love. PWM Mantis is a collaboration between the late Chris Huggett (EDP Gnat, EDP Wasp, OSCar) and PWM (Paul Whittington). A hybrid-analog synthesizer, Mantis utilizes mathematically-generated oscillators with a pure analog signal path and a modernized design architecture based on the EDP Wasp with an OSCar-style filter. It is also duophonic, with two fully independent voices, and features dual multi-mode filters that can be combined in series or parallel. Fully featured, Mantis is equipped with an arpeggiator, 37-note full-size semi-weighted keyboard with aftertouch, multi-function joystick, and MIDI/USB control for easy integration with any studio or live environment.

New UVI PX V8 - Octave Voyetra 8 Sample Based Soft Synth

Published on Dec 6, 2018 UVI

And promo video from Doctor Mix featuring the original hardware Voyetra 8:

How To Play "Video Killed The Radio Star" On The Voyetra 8

Published on Dec 6, 2018 Doctor Mix

"Here's the über rare Voyetra 8 vintage synth and how we used it to recreate Video Killed The Radio Star by "The Buggles". Discover UVI's PX V8. Download the Multi-Track of this video for FREE now: https://www.doctormix.com/video-kille..."

"PX V8 is based on an exceedingly rare American polyphonic analog synthesizer, the Voyetra Eight. Released by Octave-Plateau Electronics in 1982, this unassuming 3-space rackmount synth is a 78 lb. analog powerhouse sporting 8 voice cards and an incredibly deep modulation system. With 6 pages of parameters to customize the Voyetra Eight was nothing if not flexible, but in the end it's the sound that counts and it does not disappoint. Thanks to subtle differences in each of the voice cards and a powerful unison mode, the Voyetra Eight delivers a wonderfully uncompromising analog sound with rich, powerful leads, thick basses, warm, modulating pads, strings and more. A unique instrument with a sound greater than the sum of its parts, the Voyetra Eight packs a huge analog punch into a small frame that until now has largely been lost to time.

PX V8 has been a passion project, it took us 2 years to track down a Voyetra Eight, and even then it required significant work to restore to factory condition. Our sound designers spent over 6 months creating sounds with the Voyetra for PX V8; learning the instruments structure, designing patches, exploring possibilities, recording and editing. We tested numerous configurations of cables and converters to ensure you'd experience the highest quality sound before settling on Vovox and Prism, the results are clear.

PX V8’s sampling was made per-key for every patch we designed, both with and without unison mode engaged allowing you to enable genuine hardware unison on any sound in the library. Just like on the Voyetra Eight you can load two layers at once, and with the unison mode engaged you can create truly massive analog sounds without worrying about an 8 voice ceiling.

In the end we recorded over 25,000 samples from the Voyetra - packing PX V8 with a whopping 400 presets made from 176 layers, divided into 10 categories including bass, brass, keyboards, leads, misc, organs, pads, poly, strings and waveforms. Each of the sounds is fully customizable and can be used straight-away or as the starting point for a new sound. Raw waveforms are also available for those who want to create sounds from scratch.

PX V8's aesthetic was adapted to closely mimic design cues from the hardware, giving you the feel of the original instrument as you easily tweak and edit the oscillators, envelopes, multimode filter, LFO and step modulators, dual arpeggiators and a featured effect section including EQ, drive, Thorus, ensemble, Phasor, delay and Sparkverb.

Rare and relatively unknown, the Voyetra Eight is not the simplest synthesizer to master - but the sounds it can create are brilliant, making PX V8 one of our most unique and inspiring libraries yet.

The Collidoscope Prototype Double Granular Synthesiser

Crazy Synthesizer Demo Published on Nov 19, 2015 Doctor Mix

"Meet The Collidoscope, a prototype double granular synthesiser by researchers Fiore Martin & Ben Bengler. More instruments and gear on http://www.doctormix.com/blog/

This hybrid keyboard is a combination between a sampler and a supercollider synth engine, designed to be played by two performers at the same time."

Update: some additional info & pics via Doctor Mix follow. Note it is currently a prototype and not for sale. If it does end up being produced for purchase they do not have an estimate of how much it might cost.

Update2: You'll find the website for Collidoscope at http://collidoscope.io. Note the Collidoscope is not by DoctorMix. They only featured it and of course made the video above. The Collidoscope is an independent project.

"The Collidoscope is a prototype synthesiser designed by researchers Ben Bengler & Fiore Martin.

Based on a granular synthesiser engine the instrument can be played by two performers at the same time (as they stand opposite one another on the sides of the unit) using the 2 built-in sets of keyboard, gooseneck microphone, colour display and controllers.

The Collidoscope samples from the microphones (or line inputs) and displays in real time a waveform of the sample and allows it to be played back instantly. The main sliding knob positioned below the waveform allows for the visual selection of a portion of the sample to be played (by moving it horizontally), and for the modification of the size of the portion being looped (through rotating the knob).

Two additional sliders allow for the high passing of the sound and for the extension of the boundaries of the loop being played to its neighbouring audio material, fading in more of the audio sample without changing the rhythm of the loop.

There are also two backlit octave selection buttons and a sturdy metal button next to the microphone base to start sampling.

The Collidoscope is revolutionary for the way in which it changes the relationship between the performer and sampling process, allowing a seemingly infinite way of manipulating the sound without interrupting its flow."

"The Roland MC-707 GROOVEBOX has everything electronic music producers need to create a song or perform a live set without a computer. The MC-707 is armed with an eight-track sequencer optimized for fluid production, our latest deep synthesis engine, a powerful sampler, massive effects palette and 16 ultra-sensitive pads for playing or sequencing drum parts, melodic basslines, or polyphonic chord progressions.

The MC-707’s eight-track sequencer is made for today's electronic-focused music styles and ever-evolving subgenres. The TR-REC step sequencer is just like those found on classic Roland drum machines, perfect for building rhythm parts quickly. There are also 16 ultra-sensitive pads for playing or sequencing drum parts, melodic basslines, or polyphonic chord progressions.

The MC-707 features our latest sound engine, which fuses virtual analog and modern PCM. It’s flexible, powerful, and lets you dig deep into its sonic capabilities. It has the sounds of legendary Roland rhythm machines and synthesizers that are the foundation of electronic music—including the TR-808, TR-909, TB-303, JUNO-106, and SH-101. But the MC-707 also looks forward, with modern digital and hybrid sounds perfect for creating future classics—today.

In addition to its deep synthesis engine, the MC-707 has a powerful sampler with on-the-fly recording that synchronizes to your project's tempo and works as an updateable and expandable platform that never gets stale. Keep things fresh with new loops, one-shots, phrases, and synth sounds—all available online."

"The Roland MC-101 GROOVEBOX combines premium-quality synthesizer and drum sounds, samples, patterns and effects in a compact four-track sequencer that’s go-everywhere portable. Create whenever, and wherever, inspiration strikes with this pocket production studio and add performance-ready tracks to your DAWless or compact synthesizer setup.

The MC-101 has a four-track sequencer optimized for beatmakers, producers and mobile music makers creating today's electronic and dance-oriented music. You can use the 16 ultra-sensitive RGB pads to create drum, bass, and synthesizer patterns and create your own original music. It's your musical playground, where you can freely combine loops and one-shots with melodic phrases including your own imported audio recordings and MIDI sequences. Compose and trigger clips, rearrange, re-sample, record your knob movements, and more.

On top of that, add the Roland sounds that have defined electronic and dance genres for over forty years. Legendary instruments like the TR-808, TR-909, JUNO-106 and SH-101 are all here, ready to replicate classic sounds or be combined, tweaked, and processed into entirely new sounds.

With the MC-101's massive effects palette, your music sounds polished and fully-produced. Each track has independent effects processors with a huge number of variations. The lush chorus brings depth to pads and other synth sounds. Delays and reverbs create evocative spaces and add movement to delicate sequences. Overdrive, distortion, and amp simulation add grit and intensity to synths, guitars, drums and more. You can also run your entire mix through master effects like filters, bit-crushers and a master bus compressor that glues it all together with punch and clarity."
