HAINBACH / TODD BARTON Split Vinyl LP

video upload by Todd Barton

"Ultraviolet Light is proud to announce a split vinyl LP featuring three new tracks of exploratory music apiece by innovative electronic musicians Todd Barton and Hainbach.

Four decades into making music in conversation with modern classical, jazz, poetry, ancient music, new age, and the avant-garde, Todd Barton continues to craft sounds that know no boundaries. Berlin-based Hainbach’s side conjures a pulsing and immersive electronic landscape very much in conversation with Barton’s spacious and unfettered compositions. Taken as a whole, the album relocates us into a cerebral yet viscerally affecting cinema of orchestrated chaos and near-future noise.

This release continues Ultraviolet Light’s unique relationship with both artists. Todd Barton curated the artists featured on the label’s sold-old Buchla Now cassette; Barton and Hainbach’s first pairing was on a 2019 Ultraviolet Light split cassette.

The Hainbach and Todd Barton split vinyl LP will be limited to 300 copies.

Video created by Pam Anderson whose work can be explored here: instagram.com/windcruel."

Isolation Loops - Free Hainbach Samplepack

Published on Mar 16, 2020 HAINBACH

I didn't know Hainbach had a tiny third arm.

"Get the samples here: http://hainbach.bandcamp.com

As more and more of the world goes into Covid-19 quarantine, I thought it would be nice to have a few sounds to get inspired from. I made a mini-Hainbach soundpack for you to make music with, containing some of my most favorite instruments: the Metasonix D1000 drummachine, whose hummy excellence I have enjoyed for long. The amazing Juno60 run through the nicest passive bandpass filters known, acoustic soundtrack loops with prepared piano, my beloved Ciat-Lonbarde modular, humble dictaphone piano loops and of course raw test equipment.

This soundpack is free until the crisis is over, but of course if you have money to spare it is much appreciated. As a performing musician, I have been hit hard by the crisis, at least a third of my yearly income has evaporated.

Use these in your music as you like, feel free to credit me if you release something, there is no licensing fee. DON'T re-package these and sell them as your own loops, that is explicitly not allowed.

Also, you have to figure out BPM and pitch yourself, as I don't operate in that world. If you like this pack, you can find many many more on patreon.com/hainbach

Stay safe everyone!"

Hainbach - A Voice Magnetic | The One Take Recording Sessions

video upload by HAINBACH

"This is an excerpt from my new Album 'A Voice Magnetic'. You can hear and see all the pieces I recorded as one-takes.

Voice Magnetic by Hainbach is the enigmatic Berlin based artist’s sonic diary of 2022. On his sixth release on Seil Records, He collages the sounds he made and the ones that surrounded him over the course of twelve months into a powerfully intimate ambient experience.

In his studio or on travels —Hainbach always is working on new material and allows the locations he records his tracks in to find their way into the music. Consequently, on many tracks you can can hear the outside bleeding in — seagulls and waves on 'Izmir', the voices of his children while recording the piano or the sirens of Neukölln’s police cars in background.

The connecting threads between these pieces are magnetic tape and the human voice — hiss and breath. The result are 15 immersive ambient pieces that make up Voice Magnetic.
Often short like the moments that spark them. Fading and intricate, honest and pure.
Voice Magnetic is released on April 25th, 2023 via Seil Records on Cassette Tape and Digital (Downloads are free/name-your-price for the first two weeks) via Bandcamp. Streaming platforms will follow on May 10th."

Hainbach - Syn-Ket Studien (Full Album)

video upload by HAINBACH

"My album "SYN-KET STUDIEN" as it was recorded at the Museo Del Synth Marchegiano. Pre-order one of the limited run vinyl now or buy the digital: https://hainbach.bandcamp.com/album/s..."

"Syn-Ket Studien (German for „study“) is as much an exploration as its a love letter. When I tried to coax music from this wonderful but not always perfectly working instrument, I was under the spell of the beautiful Marche region and the hospitality I encountered at the Museo. The album cover by Zé Burnay reflects that - the countryside and culture frames the session.

Having only a few days with the Syn-Ket, I needed to work effectively. I decided it would be the tempo that would guide my interaction with the instrument. By setting the speeds of the modulators first I learned quickly what the instrument could do and what I could do with it. Every piece is the result of a learning curve, the struggle of playing an undocumented instrument and the joy of its incredible rich and powerful sound.

At home in my Berlin studio I left the sound as raw and unedited as made sense musically, adding only a touch ambience with an old stereo spring reverb."

Hainbach, Berlin, 2022

A Short History of The Syn-Ket

"The Syn-Ket is a truly exceptional instrument: developed in Italy at the same time that Robert Moog and Don Buchla set out to write instrument history, Paolo Ketoff created what is probably the first portable synthesizer.
Born from the experience of making the huge Fonosynth and inspired by the works of Harald Bode, Ketoff worked closely with musicians and composers of the American Academy of Rome (John Eaton, Bill Smith) to create an electronic instrument that would allow live performances without tape playback.
Shunning mass production, the Syn-Ket was only produced in nine custom pieces, starting in 1963, all tailored to the musician that ordered it. And those lucky few got a lot, despite the compact size: three voices with tube oscillators, two filters and an LFO, an octave filter bank and three output modulators (a mixture of LFO/Envelope/VCA). All is controlled by a very expressive three row pressure sensitive keyboard.
It found widespread use in Italian movies of the times. Little wonder, as one Syn-Ket was famously owned by Ennio Morricone"

HAINBACH / TODD BARTON - Ultraviolet Light Tapes & Upcoming Todd Barton Performances

HAINBACH / TODD BARTON from Ultraviolet Light Tapes on Vimeo.

Upcoming performances by Todd Barton futher below. The following is the description for the video above.

"Both pieces are composed/improvised in real time using a Buchla Music Easel

and a TC Electronic Ditto x4 looper. Angya is a journey that follows sounds as they

unfold into various sonic universes. Texture III explores creating an ever-changing

timbral drone."- Todd Barton

'Its a clichè that every composer travelling to Bali must be influenced by the Gamelan orchestra. I am not the exception. There is a magic to the Gamelan that conforms with what electronic music is to me, both in sound and composition. Using Adam Morford's cut down version of the Gamelan, the rough but beautiful Gamelan Strips, I composed the first piece of this collaborative album. The second uses modular synthesizers to mimic the layering techniques of the Gamelan. The final track, Antics, explores a different but similarly influential idiophone, the African mbira. Together, these three tell a story of immersion and disintegration, folding percussive sounds into ambient timbres.' - Hainbach

FUNDAMENTAL - New Test Equipment VST by SonicLab In Collaboration with HAINBACH

HAINBACH

"In which I am proud to release the VST instrument I have been working on for half a year with Sinan Bökesoy of SonicLab. Crafted with love and care, this is a rich-sounding and exploration-inviting tool for your music. Its steeped in history, but can be adapted to any music style."

Fundamental - the root of electronic music brought into the now.

Sinan Bokesoy

"Fundamental feels like something Stockhausen, Xenakis and HAL 9000 might have dreamed up after a bender. Recalling the past of electronic music and reconstruction of a massive german vacuum oscillator on a modern instrument with immense possibilities. Proudly presenting a collaboration of sonicLAB and Hainbach."

"Fundamental is a sound synthesis software tool combining the different roots of electronic music history. Fundamental wave engine is a faithful sonic recreation of a vintage Rohde&Schwartz vacuum tube oscillator ( having been widely used at WDR by Stockhausen )

Fundamental leaves behind the limitations of the original device by proposing complex modulation possibilities, stochastic distributions addressing the sonic parameters like frequency , gain, stereo panning etc. in continuum, which has not been applicable until now.

Fundamental feels like something Stockhausen, Xenakis and HAL 9000 might have dreamed up after a bender: recalling the past of electronic music through a dynamic modern reinterpretation of a massive german vacuum oscillator,

Hainbach Gave Away His Test Equipment - Exploring The New Tape and Test Equipment Studio in Porto

video upload by HAINBACH

"I gave away my test equipment (two palettes of it at least) and I am happy about that! Because it became the foundation of a new tape and test equipment studio that you too can record in now. It is situated at the non-profit association Sonoscopia in Porto, Portugal. Sonoscopia is a unique place run by musicians and sound artists. Every nook and cranny is filled with objects made by artists who did residencies there. It is truly one of the nicest places in experimental music I have found across the world.

I gave a workshop on how to use this equipment for music, and here is the short version of that. If you are interested in the full process and more knowledge, the unedited version is on my Patreon.

This Analog Synth Arrived Broken...

video upload by HAINBACH

"When I first heard the Crumar DS-2 I was enchanted: it sounds absolutely wonderful and is, like most Italian synths, a true player's instrument. I get why Sun Ra dug it so much. But it is a risky synthesizer to buy: according to vintagesynth.com it is one of "the most unreliable on the used market". And mine was no exception. The seller claimed that "you can make music with it" and he was not wrong, even though he did not say it was this messed up. I was very close to sending it back, but then I started really playing it. This is what happened.

Get the tape and book of my DS-2 album 'Tagwerk':
https://industrialcomplexx.bandcamp.c..."

Hainbach is the paradigm of the revaluation of outdated material and the reconditioning of machines destined for other purposes that have nothing to do with sound, although his work as a researcher is currently much broader, his technological mastery is possibly one of the most advanced of our era.

Tagwerk is an album that honours Hainbach's way of working. It is recorded on a Crumar DS-2, an early Italian synthesiser he acquired and which began to malfunction shortly after he started it up, hence the title. This album is about embracing the broken and letting it inspire you. Much of it was recorded in two days, not even daring to open the window or turn off the synthesizer for fear that inspiration would escape or that it would break completely. He recorded 22 tracks in this marathon state, and the ones on this release are the ones that survived. There is a sonic magic in that era that is unsurpassed.

Tagwerk is accompanied by a book that tells the story of this German producer and also discusses many of his machines and working techniques.

HAINBACH Recreates His Test Equipment Setup in a Eurorack Modular Synthesizer

Published on Feb 17, 2020 HAINBACH

"In which I solve my Eurorack crisis by using test equipment techniques to build a better modular synthesizer.

Me and my eurorack had our problems in the past year: I had built a system based around wavetables and powerful sequencing, but every time I sat down with it I made what I can only describe as stupid music: chatty happy pseudo-housy bouncy stuff that i could maybe use as a bed for a video, but nothing I really enjoyed. I had fun making it, but I did not like the results. All the sequencing power and tonal variation was too much, but also too little for the size of the system to make truly good tunes.

So I had a revelation: what if I build a system based on my favourite instrument now, my wall of test equipment. [check it out here]

So this is the system I put together from everything I had in my racks. Some modules were so long in there I had to drill the screws. It is a mini version of my test wall, and I feel super-inspired again to play with the eurorack. Translating what I have learned in the past year to the modular makes this feel like a very powerful yet small instrument, and I am back to making music with it that I actually enjoy.

Hainbach - Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen | tape loop ambient

Published on Jan 7, 2018 HAINBACH

"For a play I am scoring I recorded the first few bars of the vocal melody from Gustav Mahler's Song "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen" on a tape loop and went up to an old chapel in the Black Forest. Winds shook the camera, but it was a fitting atmosphere to perform and record this piece.

Exploring the Cosmic Beauty of the Elgam Carousel

video upload by HAINBACH

"Form changes function - the Elgam Carousel first appeared as part of a big organ. Elgam quickly realized that they could a make a standalone product out of this, for the more mobile musicians entertaining crowds at business and family functions. They set a trend - CRB and Elka followed with the Computerband 2000 and Wilgamat. These standalone keyboards can be called the first groove boxes. In this video I demo this cosmic sounding wonder and show real world applications in scoring.
