Hybrid Acid live at Howler on 9.09 featuring Acid Safari, Mike Callander and Honeysmack

video upload by Honeysmack

"Combining DJing and live improvised Acid Techno — Hybrid Acid are the trio of Acid Safari, Mike Callander and Honeysmack! The performance sees all 3 artists improvising at the same time producing a thick sonic wall of pure improvised Acid Techno. It all takes place on the dance floor (boiler room style) intimate with the audience. Hybrid Acid is a feast of decks, drum machines, 303s and much more! This is a new project formed in 2023 and with just a few shows under their belt, Hybrid Acid are offering a new experience on the dance floor, colliding contemporary DJ practices with live electronic dance music performance.

Hybrid Acid performed at Howler on the holy day for Techno heads, 9/09. Celebrating the iconic Roland TR-909 drum machine that is ubiquitous throughout Techno and House music. Acid Safari, Mike Callander and Honeysmack give thanks to the Techno heartbeat that is the 909 performing their highly unique project on this special night. For those who were there on this special night, thank you!! The place was electric all thanks to you - the audience!! Special thanks to everyone at Howler and Richard De Silva who shot and produced this video.

This Spanish born; Australian DJ has been one of the not so well-kept secrets in the world renown Melbourne scene for many years. Mike Callander

I'm Honeysmack, a live Acid Techno artist, producer, performer, and music technologist from Melbourne, Australia. My name is Dr. David Haberfeld. As an improviser and academic, I've been creating electronic music since the early 1990s. Yes, I even completed a PhD in Acid Techno! I have worked and helped some of the biggest names in dance music, and as an academic I've taught at universities from Australia to north America and Asia. I can provide unique insight and approach to making electronic music that does not require any prior knowledge or formal music education - if you're ready to be challenged creatively in new and exciting ways, I can help. Think of it as therapy for techno creatives and synth heads or anyone who loves the TB-303 and wants to hang-out.
😁

I'm now opening up and giving you access to my knowledge, experience, and studio. Additionally, my work as a music technologist extends to beta-tester, demonstrator, and consult for some of the top music technology manufacturers, so by simply following me you gain special insights to new and vintage gear. I'll cover everything from drum machines, synths, modular gear, studio set-up advice, performing with hardware through to communicating to other lifeforms on other planets outside of our galaxy, okay maybe not, but you never know!!

There is no such thing as a foolish question, so please reach out if you're interested in one-on-one coaching and mentorship. I appreciate your support and look forward to meeting and interacting with you, thanks!"

Techno Beat Production: Honeysmack How I Make Improvised Acid Techno

video upload by Honeysmack

"This video was made for beat production students at The State University of New York (SUNY Broome County) back in October 2021 during the pandemic. It was recorded in my old studio before it was redesigned in early 2022. Here I discuss my overall approach and philosophy to making and performing live improvised techno. Performing with my "studio instrument" is at the core of what I do as live techno improvisor. There are excerpts from live performances throughout the video, with detailed explanations. This channel is supported by my Patreons, become a member here: https://www.patreon.com/honeysmack and yes I also offer one-on-one tuition/lesson/coaching on making and performing live techno.

New Roland TR-8 7X7 Videos by Honeysmack

First acid jam with 7X7-TR8 + A4 + Devilfish TB-303 by Honeysmack

Published on Dec 18, 2014 Honeysmack

Follow-up to First look at Roland AIRA 7X7-TR8 Drum Machine expansion by Honeysmack

"First jam with the new Roland 7X7-TR8 expansion update. Hooked up a couple of friends old and new: Roland TB-303 Devilfish and Elektron Analog Four.

Nothing too serious just giving the TR8 little more context with some other gear. Plugged everything in, hit record on the camera and jammed the boxes. One single take no edits, no post, no worries. Tunable 707 & 727 sounds is a real plus.

Routing: 7X7-TR8 is the master clock, slaved MIDI to A4 sending sync to 303 Devilfish. 303 audio out is directly routed to the Space pedal. All other effects are from the TR8 and the A4. 303 might be a little too loud me thinks.

Thanks to Roland Australia for an advance copy of the new update."

7X7-TR8 techno jam with MC202 + Analog Four + VT3 by Honeysmack

Published on Dec 18, 2014

"Quick jam with the new 7X7-TR8 expansion together with the MC202 + Analog Four. Nothing too serious just finding my way around the new soundset for the TR8. The new expansion opens up the TR8 considerably.

Have always been a big fan of both the TR707 and TR727 (pictured in the video but no in use), great to have them easily accessed on the one machine. Some of the aditional sounds are also of value.

Routing: TR8 is the master clock, slaved to A4 sending sync to 202. Audio from 202 is routed directly to the VT-3. One single, take no edits, no post, no worries.

Somewhat reminds me a little of early Luke Slater/Planetary Assault Systems, which was unintentional but a good thing nevertheless."

Published on Feb 17, 2014 Honeysmack·13 videos

"All Roland affair-- young and old. Just mucking about, smashing out some techno. No major statement. Didn't realize the camera was rolling.

The TB3 is the distorted acid line. TB303 has some effects from the desk otherwise all the other effects emanate from the TR8 and TB3. TR727 is routed into the TR8 external in. VT3 is pictured but not in use here.

CJ Bolland Interview: Techno Legend Talks Electronic Music Production and the Gear He Loves

video upload by Honeysmack

This one is in via supporting member Honeysmack.

"CJ Bolland discussing how he makes music and the gear he loves: TR-808, MC-202, Quadrantid Swarm, Arturia synths, Korg Flanger pedals and more!"

"Legendary electronic musician, DJ and techno producer, CJ Bolland sat down for a candid unscripted interview in my studio in the first week of 2023 discussing his approach to making music and how it has evolved over the years, through to revealing the synths and drum machines that have shaped his work.

CJ Bolland is a pioneering techno artist from Belgium who first released his seminal early techno tracks on R&S Records in the early 1990s. Since then his electronic music production and projects has him weaving through a combination of techno, pop and electro genres over the past 3 decades. He provides insight to how he creates and the music technology that he loves. CJ also reveals a few hidden gear secrets! Has a little jam in my studio and there's even a surprise guest.

CJ was in Australia for some shows in late Dec 2022 and we recorded this chat in the first week of 2023. Mr. Bolland has been a great friend of mine since we first met at the end of 1999. He's always been upfront, genuine and humble about his career for as long as I've known him and he knows I can be a professional idiot at the best of times 🤡 Thanks again to CJ for his time and friendship! Modular Acid Techno Jam with TR-909 for upcoming Unpatching Modular Synth Rack Performance

video upload by Honeysmack

"Hello friends, I'm now on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/honeysmack This jam is the precursor to my unpatching acid techno modular rack, where Patreon supporters get to see the preview! In my next video I will do the opposite of patching from scratch, instead I will unpatch this little performance - now you've seen the jam, next I'll unpack this performance and modular rack and explain how it was created.

This is the rack I've been using recently for my recent live shows, I thought it might be interesting to unravel how I put this rack together as it evolved over the last few months. And like every modular rack it will come to an end and I will move onto another rack with the amazing Cwejman SM-1 - but that's a video for another time 😅 There'll be some previews of the SM-1 on Patreon very soon.

If you want to know how I make and perform techno and would like to hang out or get some personalised tuition - directly from my studio, whether you're starting your techno making journey or you've been making bangers for some time, then take a look at my Patreon page for more details. 😉

🎛 Gear used in this video:

*Roland TR-909 - kick, hi hat and rides [off camera]
*Playdifferently Model 1 mixer [off camera]
*Elektron Analog Heat [off camera]
gear that is off camera for this video will be revealed and discussed in the following unpatching video!
