Sequential Re-Introduces the Prophet-5 and Prophet-10 Synthesizers

"Sequential Reintroduces the Prophet®-5, the Synth that Revolutionized an Industry

San Francisco, CA—Oct 1, 2020—After months of clandestine development, Sequential today announced the reintroduction of its most famous and beloved instrument: the Prophet-5. Timed to coincide with founder Dave Smith’s 70th year, the instrument revisits a landmark era in American analog synthesizer design and marks an authentic and authoritative return to roots for the legendary pioneer of electronic instruments.

“It’s not often that you get to revisit your past, retrieve some of its magic, and give it new life,” said Dave Smith. “The Prophet-5 was one of the most exciting instruments to appear in an equally exciting time for music and technology. It’s gratifying to rediscover that its sound and aesthetics are just as appealing now as they were then.”

Faithful to the original, the new Prophet-5 features five voices with two multi-waveform analog oscillators, resonant analog low-pass filters and amplifiers, and a filter and amplifier envelope per voice. Modulation is provided by a multi-waveshape LFO and Poly Mod, a ground-breaking modulation scheme for its time that allowed the filter envelope and oscillator B to be routed to a variety of destinations including filter cutoff frequency, oscillator A frequency, and oscillator A pulse width.

The new Prophet-5 features original, genuine Curtis VCOs and filters as used in the Prophet-5 Rev3, as well as the Dave Rossum-designed SSI 2140 filter, the modern counterpart of the original SSM 2040 Rossum designed in the Prophet-5 Rev1 and Rev2. “We made the new Prophet-5 the best of all Prophets by embodying all three revisions of the original. We did this by adding a Rev switch to the front panel, so you can choose your preferred filter.”

Smith continued, “We also researched what made the original P-5 sound the way it did — organic and alive — and found that a lot of that desirable character was due to fluctuations and differences in the response times and frequencies of the individual oscillators, filters, and envelopes from voice to voice. So we also added a Vintage knob that loosens all of them up like they were in the old days. You can dial in progressively more vintage character as you go from a very stable “4,” as in Prophet-5 Rev4, all the way to “1,” as in Prophet-5 Rev1, which was the most temperamental of all Prophet-5s. We’ve even included the original factory sound set for the full vintage experience.”

Other modern enhancements include velocity sensitivity and aftertouch to increase expressiveness, as well as MIDI and USB connectivity. Control voltage and gate ins/outs are also present for connecting modular synths and other gear. The new Prophet-5 is housed in a collector-worthy, premium-quality, steel and hand-oiled sustainable black walnut heartwood body, with a full, five-octave, semi-weighted Fatar keybed.

Sequential is simultaneously offering the Prophet-10, a ten-voice version of the synthesizer with the same sound engine and collector-worthy design. “I originally designed the first Prophet in both five-voice and ten-voice versions. But the five-voice model was the one that achieved mass production. We thought it would be fun and fitting to reintroduce the ten-voice as well, to make the circle complete.” Sequential Circuits’ later product, the dual-manual, bi-timbral Prophet-10, was a different instrument in both concept and execution.

"There are few synthesizers that spark deep emotions and reverence. The Prophet 5 is one of them. Its history is marked by both the counter and the dominant cultural works; wether listening to the independent outings of New Musik and Skinny Puppy, the art of Japan and Sakamoto, the disco of Cowely, the soundtracks of Carpenter or the pop of McCartney and Madonna, it collectively becomes clear that the Prophet 5 is the great enabler of the modern musical expression. If the Model D is the left hand the Prophet 5 is the right. And rightly so, as its genius and genuineness transitioned the 5 from "tool of novelty" firmly into the place of an exuberant enabler of the creative expression. From decade to decade, its design and purity allowed it to slot into a music production unweathered and unbiased by whatever style is in vogue. Yet, it's always fashionable and it always sits right where it's supposed to. Put simply, it's a workhorse that inspires. Whatever the revision. And now, that story, that lineage continues with the Rev 4.

It's with absolute honor, gratitude, and exhilaration that I accepted the offer to work on the factory patches for Sequential's latest chapter in the story of the Prophet 5. Sound designing alongside the superb voicing team has been a wonderful collaboration with a company I consider family and my way to give thanks for the career that the Prophet 5 has helped me build. Unlike other projects I've done in the past, part of my testing of the Rev 4 included putting it through an actual studio music production. I'm currently in the middle of producing two LP's (the artists Some Ember and Patriarchy) and the Rev 4 got used heavily on both. The main question I sought to answer: "does it handle the same as a vintage unit". What became abundantly clear: the Rev 4 isn't like a Prophet 5, isn't inspired by a Prophet 5, ins't referencing a Prophet 5; it is a Prophet 5. Through and through in every sense of the very defining characteristics of the 5. It's a Prophet 5. Period. And in many regards it's better. Why?

Rapid fire MIDI, Fatar keybed, both genuine SSM (SSI) filters and VCAs, genuine Curtis filters and oscillators, a perfectly tuned LFO and envelopes, the ability to actually save LFO amount settings, velocity, aftertouch, the same voice allocation as the original ... and zero repairs needed with no sacrifice to the soul of what makes the 5 the 5. It looks the same with minor additions that can be completely ignored if you choose. You can play it like the original and you can expect it to do exactly what the original does. Or you can take advantage of all of the modern facilities. I also made a set of patches that were the same sounds on both a vintage 5 and the Rev 4 and quickly cycling playing the same passage on the 2 instruments, for all in the room, it was impossible to tell what's what and who's who.

The amount of care, attention to detail, and workmanship that has gone into the Rev 4 is remarkable and I am honored to have been a part of the team putting it through the paces. Sequential is a special company. It's marked by integrity, friendship, care, and carries on a tradition of producing musical instruments from that platform. The Rev 4 is a Prophet 5 and ONLY Sequential can make that.

Please note, the Rev 4 in the video is a prototype unit and I recorded this with a beta firmware. As such, while the synth was largely done there are some changes both to the panel and to the OS that are in the final shipping version (obviously). The Prophet 5 was recorded straight into Pro Tools HD and no post processing or fx were added. What you're hearing is the raw Rev 4."

Akai Introduces MPC Jupiter Rising Synth Expansion by INHALT

When I first got the MPC X I was taken aback by the sheer sound quality of the new audio engine. The filters, in particular, sounded warm and very analog like. After putting the machine through several productions, I quickly realized that the X is essentially a modern day Fairlight. It soon became my go to production center piece and my older MPCs (3000 and the ASQ10 sequencer) were quickly sold. Yes, it's that good. After some more time of working with the machine passed, I wanted to develop a comprehensive set of synthesizer oriented patches that could be quickly recalled for fast production access but with no compromise in sound quality. One of the most useful synths in a production context, to my ears and experience, is the Jupiter 8. While not a particularly showy synth, its tone and range of sounds makes it possible to slot into any production. As such, I thought this would be a great candidate for a deep sampling.

This library is the culmination of many months of work doing exactly that. Some patches are multi-sampled classic JP8 patches, and while those sound absolutely exceptional, the real stars are the short cycle samples. I employed the power of the MPC Engine to play back a different short-cycle sample per key press, per zone, randomly. This creates the feeling of playing the real JP8 as every key press is slightly different than the previous. When combined with the vast set of filters, an incredibly convincing analog-like sound is the end result. There are many patches of various combinations of samples included to cover every possible oscillator combination like on the real synth (i.e. 1 vco saw, 2 vco saw+saw, 2 vco saw+square ...) which leads to the most convincing sample based emulation of the classic synth. These raw patches serve as a starting point for your own sound design, however there are also many characteristic INHALT patches that are ready to go for your own music making.

In short, once the library was done, I was absolutely floored by how accurate and convincing this sample library really is at getting the mood, vibe, feel, and exact sound of the JP8. I think you will find the same. I had a really fantastic time working with all at Akai Professional on this and out of the many projects I've taken on, I'm probably the most pleased with how the end result came out on this one. All of the sounds (including drums) that you hear are 100 percent the Jupiter Rising Library recorded directly from the MPC X stereo output."

Sequential Debuts the Pro 3 - Multi-Filter Mono Synth

"Some time ago, I put together a video demonstrating the remarkable ability of the AS-1 synthesizer to mimic the classic Sequential Circuits Pro One. I sent the video to my friends at Sequential and expressed a great desire for a fully fledged, keyboard version of the synth. Flash forward to the tail end of 2019, and I’m sitting in front of the Sequential Pro 3. While the inspiration might have come from some aspects of the AS-1, the Pro 3 is so far and above, it truly deserves the title of FLAGSHIP.

To me, the central point of the Pro 3 isn’t necessarily the feature set, which is VAST, but the raw sound. This synth is a production workhorse that sounds proper. It has a kind of aggression, bigness, and elegance that is typically associated with some of the finest vintage synthesizers; the low end is massive and the top end can cut through but it’s that all important midrange that is the most impressive. That midrange synthesizer bass sound, that many other synths fail at (by over compensating lows and highs) isn’t an issue here and it’s that aspect that allows the Pro 3 to link the vintage to the modern. Simply put, any working producer looking for a flagship mono that can handle the rigor of modern production and can make as many classic vintage sounds as futuristic ones should not sleep on this.

The three filters on offer here all have their unique personalities and allow you to cover a vast array of sounds. The OB6 filter in particular is a favorite and combined with the sheer physicality of the analog vco’s used here, allowed me to get into a kind of Xpander territory. The ladder filter pounds and moves like a vintage synth. And the Prophet 6/AS1 filter is exactly what you expect.

No external sequencing or multitracking was used on this recording. Everything was made 100 percent on the Pro 3. This is a recording of all of the patches I submitted to Sequential for the Pro 3’s factory bank. A big thanks to the whole Sequential family and a massive congratulations from INHALT on this stunning new synth!"

"Sequential Debuts Pro 3, Multi-filter Mono Synth Featuring VCOs, Wavetables

San Francisco, CA—January 14, 2020—Sequential today announced the Pro 3, a new flagship mono/paraphonic synthesizer. A hybrid instrument, the Pro 3 features three classic analog filters (Prophet-6, OB-6, and ladder) and three oscillators (two VCOs and one wavetable oscillator) along with a powerful new 16-track sequencer, and the ability to connect with modular synths through its four control voltage ins/outs.

“In many ways the Pro 3 is the evolution of a concept that started with the classic Sequential Circuits Pro-One,” said Sequential founder Dave Smith: “Pack as much power as possible into a compact footprint and make it sound awesome. To do that, we built on the strengths of its modern-day counterpart, the Pro 2, and created a worthy successor to both that sets a new benchmark for raw power and versatility.”

Part of this sonic versatility comes from the Pro 3’s oscillators: Two voltage controlled oscillators provide traditional triangle, saw, and pulse waves with waveshaping, while a third digital wavetable oscillator provides 32 tables of 16 waves each with wave morphing. Three vintage-style filters shape the sound of these oscillators. Filter 1 is a 4-pole low-pass design based on the Prophet-6 filter. Filter 2 is a classic transistor ladder filter with optional resonance compensation to preserve its low-end punch. Filter 3 is a classic 2-pole, state-variable design based on the OB-6 filter that can be continuously varied between low-pass, notch, and high-pass operation, with an optional band-pass mode. A Drive control provides additional punch to all three filters.

The feature set of the Pro 3 is rounded out with a multimode arpeggiator, three LFOs, four loopable ADSR+delay envelopes, dual digital effects (delays, reverbs, and various time-based effects), tuned feedback, analog distortion, and extensive modulation possibilities. The LFOs, delay, and arpeggiator can be synced to either the internal clock or an external MIDI clock. A programmable position-sensitive touch slider and pitch and mod wheels provide nuanced control over live performance. The synth is also capable of 3-voice paraphonic operation. This makes it possible to play 3-note chords where the three individual oscillators share a common filter and envelopes.

The full-featured sequencer provides 16-track sequences of up to 64 steps, with ratcheting, variable gate and sequence lengths, multiple playback modes, and paraphonic operation. It also syncs to MIDI clock and external audio input, and inputs/outputs control voltages. In addition to notes, sequence tracks can control any parameter in the 32-slot, 171-destination modulation matrix.

Another key feature of the Pro 3 is its four scalable rear-panel control voltage inputs and outputs, which allow compatibility with modular synths. Control voltages are routed from within the modulation matrix and run at audio rates for extreme modulation effects. “We wanted to make the Pro 3 as flexible as possible,” said Smith. “The CVs and deep mod matrix make it a mini modular in its own right — without all the patch cables.”

Sequential is also offering the Pro 3 SE, a special edition version of the synthesizer that puts the same synthesis power into a collector-worthy design that features a tilt-up control panel and full, premium-grade walnut trim.

The Pro 3 standard edition will be available at the end of January with a US MAP of $1,599.

By the time I got to Phoenix, I had a VCO.

"Finally ... I have a VCO.

So I sit here in a hotel room in Phoenix, waiting to hear from Southwest about my videographer's cancelled flight back to Chicago. It was already cancelled due to the crazy weather, and after rescheduling her flight has been cancelled again.

I thought I'd take this break in my drive back from California to let everyone on the list know that not only did I just show a VCO at the 2019 winter NAMM convention but that it is already for sale.

I really like using this Electronic Newsletter to talk about cool stuff going on in my life and then pitch something at you, however this time it's all pitch. To make up for it I'm going to insert some great photos from my trip out here and back. Some photos I took, some photos she took.

So my first VCO is actually going to be available initially in Eurorack format. Don't be too upset, it will be available in American format (or Moog format, or as some say "man-size") but for certain practical reasons Eurorack came first.

It's called the .VCO. It is 8HP in size, and has sawtooth, triangle, and suboctave square wave outputs.

It only has these three outputs because I already have a pulse shaper in the .COM/Pulse Matrix, and a sine shaper in the Wave Folder. I tend to think of all of my modules as components in a system so for me this makes a lot of sense.

It should probably be said right now before we get into it that this is an analogue VCO. There is a digital aspect to it in the tuning system, in fact there is even an ARM processor and a quad DAC in this thing but they are not in the audio signal path at all! They are just for tuning offsets, the drift generator, and scanning the knobs that control these things.

The tuning system of this VCO is very exciting. There is a "range" knob which selects from LFO, octaves from 32' to 2', and a "wide" mode (more on that later.)

The next knob is "semitone" and selects an offset from zero to twelve semitones, and the fifth (seven semitones) is given a wider degree of travel to make it easier to set the VCO to this most useful of intervals.

The final tuning knob is called "detune" and when the range control is in the octaves has a bit more than a two semitone range. When the range control is in wide or LFO mode, the knob has a much wider range, measured in octaves. I haven't tweaked it to exactly what I want yet but I promise it will be as musically useful as it can be.

The next control is "drift rate." This VCO actually has an integrated drift generator!

One of the really cool things about primitive VCOs from way back is that you would need to retune them because of temperature-related pitch drift. I thought "why not model that and turn it up to 11,000!?"

I originally conceived the drift generator as a random linear vector generator, inspired by James McCaskey asking me a long time ago "Okay so you have an LFO but what about a UFO?"

I thought about what a UFO would be in synthesiser terms, and backronymed it to Unidentified Frequency Oscillator. Another way of putting it would be a "random linear function generator."

That idea got stored in my wetware about 10 years ago and it's been waiting for an application since. This presented the perfect opportunity for implementation.

Originally I just wanted the drift generator to be a random linear function, in both rate and amplitude. Obviously it would need to be bipolar.

However after a few days it occurred to me that maybe a linear function would be too harsh, and it would need to be smoothed. You can't just slew this function, because the frequency is random, so what to do?

I decided to apply an S-curve to the linear segments, like running a triangle wave through a sine shaper.

This made the "drift" very smooth and the results are musically pleasing. I can listen to this thing drone for longer than I ought to be able to!

The rate control for the drift generator sets a master time period for the segments, which ranges from 30 seconds to 300 milliseconds. The random time variation is within 20 percent and 100 percent of that value.

The drift generator is normalised to the modulation input. This means that if nothing is plugged into the modulation input, the modulation knob will control the amount of drift, which at maximum is about an octave swing.

There is a control input, which has the standard response of 1v/oct. However, the modulation input has a response of one half volt per octave. This is to allow for wide modulations from standard 5v control sources.

The third control input is a hard sync input. A cool thing about hard sync on this VCO is that the suboctave square wave is actually generated from the reset of the core, so it will sound different under hard sync than if it were counted off of a pulse shaper. It's kind of hard to describe quickly but just trust me.

Dave Smith Instruments Artist Interview with MATIA SIMOVICH aka INHALT


Many of you should be familiar with INHALT from numerous posts here on MATRIXSYNTH. Dave Smith Instruments just posted an interview with him. You can find it on their website here.

"A resident of the San Francisco electronic and experimental music circuit for nearly two decades, Matia Simovich’s productions and sound design have questioned the line between forward-thinking, avant pop and the depths of the underground. He honed his craft at the now-infamous Asphodel Studios/Recombinant Media Labs where, as an in-house producer, engineer, and sound designer, he collaborated with the likes of M.I.A., Keith Hillebrandt (Nine Inch Nails), and many others responsible for pushing the boundaries of the pop context. Never one to shy from the dark or the unorthodox, his production style is equally inclusive: hardware-centric and exudes the decadence and lushness of the past while integrating the precision and speed of today’s studio process. As the founding and principle member of INHALT, German for “content,” he defined this production style via several records put out by cult power house Dark Entries Records as well as Cleopatra Records. Most recently, he has collaborated with Peter Baumann (Tangerine Dream) on the Machines of Desire LP and has started a series of Artist Patch Bank libraries for various synthesizers."

64 patches and 64 sequences that completely take over your SH-01a into INHALT approved territory. We scrutinized every parameter in Roland's new Boutique and tamed the digital nature (when necessary) towards the genuine 101 tone, and played it up when taking advantage of the new features like polyphony. The SH-01a definitely delivers the goods when it comes to those famous flat 101 bass lines but, in the 4 voice polyphonic mode, leads to results that remind us of our beloved Jupiter 4 and Juno 60. That was shocking at first, but with the added fast LFO mode, it lead to the groundwork of the many famous klangy and FM-like Jupiter 4 sounds.

This download kidnaps the Boutique and will overwrite all of the internal factory patches and sequneces but because Roland have made patch dumps super easy to back up (copy to your desktop n done), it's easy to pick and choose what you want loaded on the SH-01a. We've done our best to provide a wide assortment of sounds and sequences that we hope will inspire and lead to finished songs that embody that classic Roland sound. In our studio it definitely has from the moment it got the Tr 808 trigger input ..."

Sequential Circuits Pro One vs Pioneer/DSI Toraiz AS-1 by INHALT

"Ever since working on the factory bank patches for the Pioneer AS-1, we always felt that the sound hit close to home. And that home, for INHALT, is the Sequential Circuits Pro One. Now, in this video we put both units head to head to hear which one can out do the body music bass line. Both synths were recorded straight to Pro Tools HD via a Focusrite 2802 (Audient Mic Pres) and absolutely no fx or post processing was applied. What you are hearing is the dry signal playing back to 2 discrete channels on the desk. When the cut light is lit, that channel is muted. The similarities are so remarkable between the two synths, that often times we weren't sure which one we were hearing before we put the board tape on the desk. The characteristic is so strong between these two bass monsters that we are now developing an INHALT Pro One Sound Bank for the Toraiz AS-1 which will be available for download through our Big Cartel Shop. We hope you enjoy this comparison and find it useful. The AS-1 is a monster!!"

Pioneer DSI Toraiz AS1 Demo by INHALT

"When Dave Smith Instruments approached us to do sound design for a new compact synthesizer, we weren't really sure what to expect. It had been several years since the Mopho had come out, and we had used one to full effect as a touring bass machine, so we need it was going to be loud, fully functional, and easy to gig with. However, we did not expect the varied sonic palette that comes with the Toraiz AS-1. During our time working on the factory banks and sequences, we had a chance to listen to the synth on many different sound systems, and the constant descriptor that came to mind was "Pro One". We've essentially concluded that the AS1 is the modern day Pro One. It has the distinct drive and loudness associated with the high headroom of the mono synth and the tone colour has that charismatic dryness associated with the "One".

The sequencer present here is far more comprehensive than that of the Pro One, but nonetheless, just like the older, bigger brother, it oozes Electronic Body Music unlike anything else. The feel and movement present with straight 16ths playing back on the low end gives the speakers an expected workout but without sacrificing that all important low mid. Far too many modern synthesizers accentuate the low bass and the top end but usually leave the mid range (especially the low mids) either thin or almost nonexistent. Not so with the AS1. The mid range is completely present and this midrange is critical to achieving the signature bass line sounds that the Pro One does so effortlessly.

From a feature standpoint, the little metal box is fully stacked. Everything architecturally from the flagship Prophet 6 has been ported over and the only exception is a slimmer fx section. However, considering that the preoccupation with the AS1 will be basslines and sequences, we didn't feel left out despite the fact that the FX engine is slimmer.

Please take a listen on a quality set of headphones or studio monitors. The low end is very present here and many of the sounds in the demo emphasize basslines, so you'll need something that can transmit the low end. Computer speakers just don't do this synth justice. We definitely feel like Pioneer has an absolute winner with this little box and after wrapping the sound design, we gave the unit back with much hesitation as it was leading to song ideas and inspiration non-stop!"

Roland System 500 Basslines & Sequences Demo by INHALT

"We were very excited at the prospect of a brand new analogue modular synth from Roland, so when the collaboration between Malekko and Roland was announced, we were keen to grab our hands on the System 500. As long time users of the Roland System 100m and various other Roland monosynths, to our ears, the System 500 had a lot to live up to. However, we were very pleasantly surprised upon first patching. While far more aggressive than the vintage units, the new System 500 brings that familiar Roland mid range and those super snappy envelopes back to the fold. What you hear are excerpts from a stereo recording of the System 500 with a Korg SQ1 sequencer. It was initially recorded to a Sony PCM field recorder and then transferred to Pro Tools HD for editing. We've added a bit of reverb from an Eventide H7600, but what you're predominantly hearing is the raw System 500 sound. No post processing was performed to the audio track itself and it is largely the direct output of the System 500 into the Sony PCM."
