Subterranean Commute || Ambient Eurorack Modular Synthesizer + Moog Semi-Modulars

video upload by Sam Kyzivat

"The year is 2130, and major cities have begun moving underground. Those who can afford it have followed. For the rest of us, a 30-floor long, 100-foot wide escalator commute starts and ends each day. The overhead lights have been expertly tuned to mimic the sunrise, and the transition from natural to artificial light is hardly detectable. As you descend, you close your eyes and mentally hit shuffle on a curated playlist of 6 minute long ambient tracks (the exact length of the trip) and a track called 'Subterranean Commute' starts playing. You didn't sleep well last night — the ceaseless low frequency rumbles from underground construction don't seem to bother anyone but you. The music fills your head and you immediately feel the tension in your shoulders relax. The algorithm has chosen well. You look around you at the sea of heads, some gently bobbing, some motionless, a scattering of head-bangers, and wonder what everyone else is listening to...

Patch notes:

RINGS, in modal resonator mode with two-note polyphony, is receiving gate and pitch CV from an arpeggio on the KEYSTEP PRO that's playing back randomly. The output is going into BEADS for clocked grain generation, which is creating a quasi-contrapuntal melody to the input material.

MOTHER-32 is receiving gate (Euclidean rhythm) and pitch CV (quantized random) from PAM's, with its internal LFO modulating the filter cutoff. It's also sending noise into RIPPLES for filtering (more apparent in the second half of the track).

DFAM, with a short VCA decay, is receiving somewhat erratic triggers from PAM's Euclidean rhythm via MOTHER-32.

STO is receiving random pitch CV from NOISE TOOLS' sample & hold circuit, quantized and offset by the DISTING EX. The sine wave output is then going into a VCA with every third pulse receiving an envelope from PAM's, giving some variation as the sound goes from a sustained note to a pluckier sound. The output is then sent to MAGNETO for tape delay.

PLAITS is in the two operator FM mode, receiving pitch CV from MARBLES, and then going to KAMIENIEC for subtle phase shifting, before heading to its penultimate destination: DATA BENDER for glitchiness followed by a VCA with a relatively slow LFO bringing it in and out of the mix."

Eurorack Phasers

volume 3 video upload by John Schussler

"I got a Pittsburgh Modular Toad not long ago, and realized I'd not compared the WMD Orion to anything either. Figured I'd put them both together, and throw in the G-Storm Polychrome to help join this video with earlier comparisons of eurorack phasers.

The Orion is now discontinued, and the Toad is a limited edition that will sell out. Only the Polychrome is in continued production. Not that there aren't other phasers, mind you, just saying if you like these....

VCO is a Befaco Pony. Little bit of reverb to make it not so harsh, but not too much. That's about it. Enjoy.

Eurorack Phasers - Take 2

video upload by John Schussler

"(This is a 'headphones required' video. You won't hear half of what's going on if you don't listen in headphones.)

This is my second attempt at a video on eurorack Phasers. The first (linked here but not otherwise listed in my channel: Eurorack Phasers) contained a number of mistakes. I'm keeping it around because I actually find those mistakes interesting, and want to be able to remind myself.

In particular, I didn't understand a couple things:

1) The SynthTech E560 input isn't set up for Eurorack levels, it's set up for line levels. If you don't attenuate the input, it distorts rather badly.
2) You have to use BOTH outputs of any module (that has them) if you want to hear stereo phasing. It's the contrast between the source audio and the phased audio that makes the effect, and you need two outputs to make that happen.

So. Once again into the breach, I attempt to compare some eurorack phasers. I think somewhat more successfully this time.

Crunchy Accidents (modular synth patch)

Published on Oct 14, 2017 Urs Heckmann

"Another self-playing patch, with a bit of live mixing, tweaking and patching. This time it's on the noisy side of the spectrum. It starts with accidental audio of putting the coffee mug on the table, pulling the clock cable for the sequencer to slowly, later on running the delay so hot it clips badly and all of that. First take, had to be it.

Some dark grungy, glitchy, twangy noise, atmospheres and drones, paired with some nice and thick synth sequences. This modular system is slightly modified over last vid (Clouds out, Polaris and Doepfer 138d CFX in), with Vermona Retroverb added for extra earth-shattering spring crashes.

Unfortunately I forgot to check the audio settings of the recorder. So it's maybe just 12 bits or so. Fits the vibe though.

Patch notes are a bit beyond comprehension on this one, even for myself. As so often, Batumi acts as clock source and clock divider. It also does a lot of the modulation, specifically on Rings and Maths. Maths controls Rings and Polivoks VCF Cutoff, with heavily bouncing cycles.

Oscillators (Dixie 2+ and MiniMod) are controlled by the two Tiranas going through uScale. One Tirana is occasionally transposed by some Batumi trapezoidal output.

Dixie 2+ does the bright, unfiltered PWM bass sound which also goes through the Retroverb. Its SubOsc output goes into Rings (which here does most of the Mayhem)

MiniMod goes into Polivoks VCF and plays the high arpeggios, which occasionally burst out in very fast trills and glicthy FilterFM from Maths.

Noise from Kinks and Snare from Peaks form the noise bits, with a lot of sweeping through Polaris and Kamieniec.

Black Hole DSP drenches everything in reverb and DLD does the echo, with occasional cross-patched feedback going into digital overload.

Vermona tiles and PanMix do the mixing, but I also used both Polivoks inputs and Optomix to max things out.

Lastly, uVCA control depth of PWM and Vibrato (sourced from Batumi) in the Dixie 2+ PWM voice.

That's roughly what it is."
