QuNeo Now Supported by Over 30 Popular Music Applications

"QuNeo Now Supported by Over 30 Popular Music Applications

Exciting new integration for FL Studio, Reason, VirtualDJ and Spark

BERKELEY, California – June 27, 2013 – Keith McMillen Instruments, developer of the most expressive instruments for making music with computers, announced today a new wave of music software integration for its QuNeo 3D Multi-touch pad controller.

QuNeo, the most expressive pad controller on the market, is now the most widely supported. QuNeo works out of the box with over 30 music applications, yet allows for easy tweaking to suit every player's needs.

This video [above] shows over 30 applications that can be controlled by QuNeo!

FL Studio 11
FL Studio is one of the most widely used music production software applications. The recent release FL Studio 11 by Image-Line Software includes native support for QuNeo and a new Performance mode for clip-launching.

"Image-Line is happy to include QuNeo as a supported MIDI controller in FL Studio," said Image-Line Communications Manager, Scott Fisher. "FL Studio 11's new Performance mode allows QuNeo users to do live triggering of their playlist clips."

QuNeo launching clips in FL Studio 11's new Performance mode.

Reason 7
Reason is a popular and powerful music production studio from Propellerhead Software. Released in April, Reason 7 includes built in control surface support for QuNeo.

“Controlling Reason with QuNeo gives you a different way to approach your music making, and the unique controller offers some really exciting features for interacting with your Reason rack,” said Propellerhead Product Specialist, Mattias Häggström Gerdt.

It's now easier than ever to use QuNeo's X-Y location and pressure sensitive pads to bring expressive levels of performance control to Reason. Each of QuNeo's pads can act as both a keyboard key and a 3-D effects joystick. QuNeo's additional sliders, rotaries and buttons provide even more ways to interact with Reason.

VirtualDJ
VirtualDJ is a popular DJ software application with a large, world-wide user base. In partnership with KMI, Atomix Productions has developed a QuNeo preset and control surface mapping for VirtualDJ which provides a wide range of performance options.

"It was a real pleasure working with QuNeo and the KMI staff to bring such a versatile product to VirtualDJ users, and we look forward to working with other products from Keith McMillen," said Atomix Hardware Development Engineer, Chris Stoll.

Users can scratch, crossfade between decks, alter the tempo of tracks, control loops, filters, effects and key changes, access cue points, and trigger samples. When scratching with QuNeo’s rotaries, looping or hot cue triggering, users can leverage Virtual DJ’s “Slip Mode” which automatically returns the track to the point where it would be if none of these actions had occurred.

Arturia Spark
Arturia's innovative software instruments are a natural fit with QuNeo. In partnership with Arturia, KMI has developed QuNeo control surface mappings and a custom QuNeo preset for Spark, Spark Vintage Drum Machines, Spark DubStep and Spark EDM.

Using QuNeo factory presets, users can play individual pads or drum patterns, perform drum loop manipulation, and control effects. The custom Spark QuNeo preset provides more advanced features like additional effects control, the use of QuNeo’s rotaries, and the ability to activate transport controls from QuNeo.

QuNexus Now Shipping

"QuNexus: the World's First Portable, Professional Keyboard
The Most Playable, Portable, and Powerful Keyboard Controller Now Shipping

BERKELEY, California – May 21, 2013 – Keith McMillen Instruments is proud to announce the shipping of its QuNexus Smart Sensor Keyboard Controller to customers around the world.

The next generation of portable keyboards
Featuring huge performance capabilities in a tiny footprint, QuNexus gives unprecedented expressive control with KMI's patented Smart Sensor technology that transmits pressure, tilt, polyphonic aftertouch, and velocity. QuNexus unites four generations of synthesis–CV, MIDI, USB, and OSC–for maximum flexibility.

“QuNexus is the most important evolution in keyboards since the Erard Escapement was introduced to pianos in 1821,” said KMI founder, Keith McMillen. “QuNexus gives keyboardists forms of expression that were only available to string and horn players. Although playful in appearance, it performs and feels like a serious instrument.”

QuNexus re-imagines the portable MIDI keyboard with 25 vividly illuminated, Smart Sensor keys that are uniquely interactive and fun to play. QuNexus is designed to talk to analog synthesizers with Control Voltage (CV), USB, 5-pin MIDI hardware, and networked OSC applications.

"We are very excited about the arrival of QuNexus," said John Grabowski, Senior Director of Merchandising at Sweetwater Sound. "Its innovative design and unique capabilities have already translated into strong pre-order demand."

Powerful: crank up your performance
Pros are loving the expressive power of polyphonic aftertouch, channel rotation, poly pitch bend, and the ability to incorporate analog synthesizers with Control Voltage (CV).

"I'm having a great time playing QuNexus. KMI is making products that push the boundaries," said keyboard virtuoso, Jordan Rudess.

"Apart from being a slick, portable USB controller with the unique key tilt feature, QuNexus is a convenient MIDI to CV and CV to MIDI converter, and is extremely useful for integrating my analog gear into the digital world," said electronic musician, DJ and remixer, Jonah Sharp aka Spacetime Continuum.

QuNexus' revolutionary keys can be played faster and more accurately than those of a traditional keyboard. Individual key pressure and tilt sensitivity enable fresh nuance.

"QuNexus is a dope piece of equipment for playing chords and lead lines, and I really like how I can express with the tilt pitch bend and get creative like a guitar or horn player, and do things pianos can't do," said pianist, M.C., and producer, Kev Choice.

Native: plug and play
QuNexus is easy to use because it is class compliant and works with iOS, Android, Mac OS, Windows, and Linux with no additional software drivers required. QuNexus is a powerful companion for a wide variety of music software applications such as Reason, Kontakt, Ableton Live, Logic, Arturia software synths, AudioMulch, Animoog, and GarageBand.

Portable: jam anytime, anywhere
Highly portable, durable, and USB powered, QuNexus allows performers to create and perform songs on the go with synths and piano apps easily downloaded to an iPad or laptop. QuNexus pairs very well with popular piano and music learning apps such as Synthesia, Piano Legend, Symphonix Evolution, and Pianist Pro. QuNexus requires very little power and will play all day.

"QuNexus is solving a big problem for a lot of laptop musicians who want a really portable, but powerful, keyboard controller," said recording artist and sound designer, Richard Devine.

QuNeo "Enhanced Note Mode" Performance Video

Update: and the press release:

"Limitless Fun with QuNeo's Enhanced Note Mode!
Now available as a free standalone app or Max for Live device

BERKELEY, California – June 13, 2013 – Keith McMillen Instruments, developer of the most expressive instruments for making music with computers, announced today its Enhanced Note Mode for QuNeo 3D Multi-touch Pad Controller.

Take your QuNeo performance to the next level
QuNeo's new Enhanced Note Mode maps QuNeo's pads to the notes of nine musical scales, while setting the tonic to any of 12 notes. Players can select any of the scales and then jam away without worrying about hitting a wrong note. The scales included in Enhanced Note Mode are Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian, as well as Major Pentatonic and Minor Pentatonic.

Harmonizer
Enhanced Note Mode includes a powerful harmonizer that can add complimentary pitches to each note being played. The timing of the additional harmonizer pitches can be offset to create a rhythmically compelling cascade of notes.

Adding Pitches: QuNeo's far left vertical slider controls the number of additional pitches added to a note. As the value of the slider increases, pitches are layered upon the original note–one octave below, one fifth above, one octave above, and two octaves above.

Offset: QuNeo's second vertical slider offsets the additional harmonizing pitches in time. As the value of the slider increases, the offset time grows from simultaneous to as much as a quarter note.

Pitch Bend
In Enhanced Note Mode, each pad can produce independent vibrato or deep pitch bends at the touch of a finger. Pitch bend sensitivity can be adjusted to suit the player's preference.

LED Feedback
QuNeo's multi-colored LEDs give players guidance in navigating the notes of the different scales. Keys that are illuminated in green are the root notes of the scale. Keys illuminated in orange correspond to the 2nd, 4th, and 6th notes of the scale. Keys illuminated in red are the 3rd, 5th, and 7th notes of the scale.

Octave Switching
QuNeo's arrow buttons in the lower right corner can shift the register up or down within a nine octave range.

Enhanced Note Mode can be downloaded for free as a Max for Live* device, an editable Max patch, or as a standalone application for Mac OS and Windows. Use it in series with any synthesizer or DAW application.

*To use the Max for Live version of Enhanced Note Mode, you must have either Ableton Live 8 Suite or Ableton Live 9 Suite installed on your computer. Additionally, you must have a version of Cycling '74's Max 5 (Suite 8) or Max 6.1.2 (Suite 9).

Abe's Road Test: Ableton Live + Keith McMillen's QuNeo 3D MIDI Controller in Japan

Published on Feb 20, 2013
A bit of an Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations vibe to this one.

"During a recent visit to Japan, Dubspot instructor and globe-trotting performer Abe Duque got a chance to road test Keith McMillen's QuNeo 3D controller and was impressed. The QuNeo is a USB MIDI controller that offers pressure sensitivity as well as directional control on a series of low-profile pads and sliders. We've had our eye on the QuNeo for some time and have been eager to see how it performs in real-life situations. Abe's report shows a multitude of uses for controlling Ableton Live's clips, effects, and envelope parameters in real-time. He found that while the touch-sensitive interface may take some getting used to, it also provides numerous control options that don't exist on most other MIDI control products.

The QuNeo pad MIDI controller from Keith McMillen Instruments brings a fresh design philosophy to a market dominated by endless variations on the same common designs. While its pads appear superficially like those of an MPC or NI's Maschine, the QuNeo also adds touch recognition in multiple dimensions. The "3D" in its name refers to the fact that its sensors can send velocity, pressure, and location information in addition to simple on/off note triggering. The drum pads can send x/y axis information, or each pad can send 4 separate note/pressure commands, one from each corner, making the 4×4 pad array into an 8×8 grid of 64 triggers. Some pads can also send direction and width information. The QuNeo's dimensions are also identical to an iPad's, which allows you to use it with popular iPad stands and accessories.

Free Download: Abe's Ableton Live QuNeo Template

To get you started with the Keith McMillen QuNeo, Abe Duque has provided the Ableton Live template that he uses in the above video. Please visit our blog at http://blog.dubspot.com/quneo-road-test/ to download the template."

Keith McMillen Instruments K-Board Pro 4 Sneak Peek

Published on Oct 15, 2015 Keith McMillen Instruments

"KMI Labs has been hard at work developing innovative music technology. Take a look at one of our projects!"

A standard keyboard style controller using Keith McMillen's touch pad technology. Note the two styles of pressure sensitivity in the video - vibrato with slight horizontal movement and modulation with vertical movement. Curious if there is also standard aftertouch or if that was the vibrato and the horizontal movement was more for effect. Also curious if this will support the equivalent of poly aftertouch for each.
