Curious if the aftertouch works on this one.

"The Sequential Circuits PROPHET VS digital vector synthesizer. Rare, and even rarer in this NEAR MINT condition and with these specifications.

Sequential Circuits PROPHET VS digital vector synthesizer (user switchable USA/EU voltage (110v or 220v).
This is the only model that includes the musically distinctive vector waveform synthesis (realtime joystick controlled modulation/mixing of four unique high-quality digital waveforms), with the warmth of true analog filters (VCF) and amplifiers (VCA), DUAL LFOs and analog chorus. The Prophet VS stands in a class of one with a most unique sound signature that is a true joy to play and hear. Operating System Ver. 1.2 (rare and last, most expansive and most stable OS version)..."

"Very hard to find in this of condition, and especially with the rare OS Ver. 1.2. These were over-engineered and built by American craftsmen like a tank, to last.

Such an elegant musical instrument: Consider these features:

Prophet VS Demos & a Look Inside by Dave Bellamy

Published on Oct 18, 2018 Dave Bellamy

Playlist:

1. Prophet VS arpeggiator and lead sound (bight and LOUD).
The pretty unique Prophet VS when it was working.
It had a nice arpeggiator with Assign mode which I find ten times more useful than the standard uop and down modes.
Here is a little string type lead sound on top of the arpeggiator: the same sound as the arpeggio but brighter because the notes are more sustained. This synth could be searing, bright and loud and at other times really quite subdued. The waveform was a strings waveform on all 4 oscillators if I recall correctly.
It' is (was, becaus it's now broken) a bitimbral synth but this is in 8 voice monotimbral mode with notes overlaying the arpeggio.
2. Sequential Prophet VS Curtis filters resonance demo after raspy strings sound.
Sequential really, rather than Sequential Circuits, Prophet VS. Raspy string sound and then crazy filter resonant bubbles sound. Curtis analog filters, digital oscillators playing single cycle sample waves, so this was a hybrid synthesizer in the true sense. Definitely showing the harsher element of the VS sound!
3. Sequential Prophet VS - first look inside this Analog/Digital hybrid vector synthesizer.
Sequential Prophet VS - first look inside this Analog/Digital hybrid vector synthesizer, after most of the dust was cleaned out!
Video file: PA180371.
Similar to the other videos - but this one shows a possible crack developing in the left hand circuit board near the data slider.
4. Sequential Prophet VS electronics: Curtis CEM chipset 3360, 3365, 3379, 5510 & 5530.
Quick tour of the Curtis chip set on the circuit boards of a Sequential Prophet VS synthesizer. Chips shown: CEM 3360 (VCA), 3365 (DAC, x2), 3379 (VCF, x8), and sample and hold ships CEM 5510 (x4) and 5530 (x2).
Synth needs repair, otherwise pretty decent condition (no data slider knob); it worked for 18 years for me.
This is after most of the dust was cleaned out! I couldn't even read the numbers on the chips when I first opened it this morning.
Video file: PA180381
5. Sequential Prophet VS interior electronics inc. VCFs and VCA - synth currently needs repair.
Quick tour of the interior and circuit boards of a Sequential Prophet VS synthesizer, showing various parts including most of the Curtis chip set used in this synth. Synth needs repair, otherwise pretty decent condition (no data slider knob); it worked for 18 years for me.
At around 1:00, I mentioned the 4 CEM 5510 S&H chips; actually that's the right number of those! There are no nice arty designs or illustrations on these boards like there were on the Prophet-10 for instance (see DSI studio and office tour with Carson here on YT).
This is after most of the dust was carefully cleaned out of this synth! I couldn't even read the numbers on the chips when I first opened it this morning.

Note the comment in the following description regarding it doesn't sound like a subtractive synth is a bit misleading. It is a subtractive synth with four digital oscillators that you can morph through. That said, with its analog filters it does sound amazing. Vector synthesis made its way in entirely digital form into the Yamaha TG33 & SY22, followed by the KORG Wavestation.

Three Prophet VS Emulations

Update: Make that THREE Prophet VS emulations. Via anonymous in the comments (guys and gals, start using your alias I can give you credit! : )

This Prophet VS emulator has been around for a while. That would make three!

http://manfreda.org/LordFrito/Prophet%20VS/index.html

Update: Trip! I just tried out the Auguar demo and the two envelops you can see in the picture below actually have a white dot that indicates where you are in the envelop while you hold a note down. Too cool.

Title link takes you to a post I was reading on Vintage Synth Explorer regarding a Prophet VS VSTi named the Auguar. I decided to check it out remembering that I previously downloaded General Vibe's excellent Prophet VS emulation, VectorSector. I remember reading that the people behind the VectorSector worked on the original Prophet VS, but I might be mistaken. If you know either way, please comment. I haven't been fortunate enough to get my hands on a real Prophet VS but both of these do sound good to my ears. They have that haunting quality the Prophet VS is known for. Click on the links for more info including samples and demos of each. I believe the Auguar is free while the VectorSector is $129 as of this post. It's amazing what you can get for relatively nothing today.

Sequential Prophet 5 vs Prophet VS basic waveform comparision

Published on Feb 19, 2018 synthlegends

"In that demo I demonstrate the basic waveforms from the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 rev. 3 and Prophet VS in comparision.

1. single saw
2. single saw filter
3. single saw resonance
4. two saw tuned
5. two saw detuned
6. two saw detuned (Prophet VS four saw)
7. saw lead filter
8. saw lead resonance
9. pulse and square
10. saw brass
11. saw pad
12. saw bass
13. unison lead

It is a Prophet 5 rev. 3 with curtis filter chips. So, both Prophets have the same filter chips, but the Prophet VS has digital waveforms, whereas the Prophet 5 has analog VCO. The Prophet 5 has only two oscilators, whereas the VS has four oscilators. You also can detune the oscillators and have a lot of modulation possibilites which I didn't demonstrate in this video. But you can really let the VS sound very analogue. Additionaly you have altogehther 128 waveforms (32 user and 98 in ROM).

Of my opinion the Prophet VS is a much more powerful and versatile synth, but the Propeht 5 is a bit warmer sounding. IMO the difference is not so big, also you can let him sound more broad thanks of four oscillators, a mixer envolope and also stereo pan modulation. In this examples I didnt use the onboard chorus of the VS, because the Prophet 5 has none. Also there are no additional effects. It is just pure playing the synhts.

Feel free to subscribe my channel in order to listen to more sound demos of vintage gear and synth legends.

Thanks for watching:-)"

SEQUENTIAL CIRCUITS PROPHET VS - Sounds, Patches & Ambient Soundscapes | Vector Synthesizer Demo

Published on Dec 22, 2019 synth4ever

"Sequential Circuits Prophet VS (vector synthesizer) synth demo -- featuring various sounds, presets, patches and ambient soundscapes.

Manufactured in 1986-87, the Sequential Circuits Prophet VS was Sequential's first digital synth. It uses a total of four oscillators per voice with 127 waveforms (32 user) and dynamic waveform crossfading via the joystick.

The Prophet VS features 8 voices and is 2-part multimbral, 2 LFOs with envelopes, a 4-pole resonant lowpass Curtis filter with envelope, 3x 5-stage amp, filter and mix envelopes, twin chorus, stereo effects panning of individual oscillators/individual voices, a versatile arpeggiator and more.

The Prophet VS is a fantastic synth for ambient soundscapes, glassy and smooth pads, cutting leads/basses, and harsh textures. It allows you to create interesting sounds via the hybrid digital oscillator + analog filters/VCA, and morph between them using vector synthesis.

The vector synthesis technology in the Prophet VS allows you to blend between 4 different oscillator tones in real-time via the vector joystick. This technology would go on to appear in future synths including the Korg Wavestation (including wavescanning), Yamaha SY-22 and TG-33.

The Prophet VS is fairly rare and hard to come by these days, and is available in keyboard and rack versions. Unfortunately they are also notoriously difficult to repair if something should fail... however, if you have the opportunity to try one, don't hesitate as the sound is very special. There is also now a real-time controller from Stereoping that open up real-time editing immensely vs. the menu diving required on a stock unit."

Stereoping Midicontroller for Sequential Prophet VS - realtime programming and DAW-automation

Published on Mar 19, 2016 stereoping

"This product demo shows some sound editing on the Sequential Prophet VS using the Stereoping Synth Controller which is a specialized midi hardware programmer available in many editions for Matrix 1000, Microwave, TX81Z and many more.

This edition of the controller is named 'ProVessorS' and does not cover ALL parameters of the Prophet VS but makes programming MUCH easier and funny - especially for VCA/VCF envelope rates and levels. The 4 Oscillator's Wave numbers, coarse and fine tunings are
also in direct access.

This 10-minutes-video has 7 quick chapters: Starting point is the main concept of the UI. 2. shaping the init-patch of the VS into a nice sound while being sequenced. 3. & 4. show realtime tweaking of vector envelope rates and LFOs. Chapter 5 shows how quick and easy patch name editing works with the 'letter dial mode'. In 6 you'll see remoting and automating the Prophet VS through ordinary Controller-Change messages in Fruity Loops and Ableton. The last chapter 7 demoes Detuning and Unison. Be sure not to miss this very strange but extremely cool sound the Prophet VS accidently makes when changing a wavenumber in Unison - shown from 8:57 on.

The video was recorded using 2 cameras, one showing the controller while being used, the other cam with focus on the Prophet VS display reflecting the realtime changes. In case you're wondering - the display of the VS is not the original. The faceplate of the controller in the video is an early paper printout, the final one is black not blue.

Hope you like it :-)"

Arturia Prophet V Demo and Tutorial (Prophet 5 and VS modes)

CatSynth TV

"Part 1 of our demo and tutorial of Arturia's Prophet V, a recreation of both the legendary Prophet 5 and VS by Sequential Circuits. In this video we present the P5 and VS modes, including patch editing. Part 2 will focus on the "hybrid mode" that combines the P5 and VS into a single novel instrument.

00:13 Introduction to P5, VS and Hybrid modes
00:42 Prophet 5 mode: architecture and patch programming
04:26 Prophet VS mode: architecture and patch programming
10:14 Exploring factory presets (P5 and VS)
17:55 Final thoughts and Hybrid mode teaser

'The Prophet 5 was the first totally programmable synthesizer on the market. This revolutionary synth became the basis for all other polysynths to this day. The Prophet VS was the last synth made by SCI and again it set the synth world on its ear. Its digital vector synthesis brought a new soundscape that was then carried on in products from Korg and Yamaha...While the Prophet 5 was known for its 2 oscillator analog warmth, the Prophet VS used four digital wave table oscillators giving a crystal and clear sound. We have recreated both of these classic machines to give them the detail heard in the originals.'"

Two Sequential Circuits Prophet VS in Quadro Mode

video upload by synthlegends

"The Sequential Prophet VS was the last synthesizer from Sequential Circuits in 1986, before this company became bankrupt and was sold.

Nevertheless the Prophet VS is a very sought after synth and it was used in the 80ies by France Gall, Rush, Whitesnake and Scorpions.

It is an 8 voice hybrid synth with 4 digital oscillators consisting of 98 waveform plus 31 user waveforms. You can merge the Oscillators with a vector stick called waveform mix. The Prophet VS has a curtis low pass analog filter chip, three envelopes, also with panning and a great modulation matrix with two LFO. There is also a chorus effect and a very capable arpeggiator. The Prophet VS came out as keyboard version and quite rare also as a rack version. The Prophet VS is definitely one of my favourite synths, maybe my favourite, so I also have got the rack version just in case my keyboard version brakes down sometime.

In this video I mix these two synths together via Midi. I programmed a lot of double layered sounds on both synths, so I only can play 4 tones at once. Because the synth has 4 Oscillators, you get 8 Osc at once. By merging two of them, you get in Double mode 16 Osc. If you play it in Unison mode, you get 64 Oscillators at once. That`s ultraaa fat!

I didn’t use any FX, only the internal chorus, but no additional processing, no limiter, no equalizer, compresser etc. Just pure, dry and raw. The VS is fat enough.

I hope you enjoy this video. Thanks for watching, see you next time!"

Prophet VS Editor for iPad

Update2: you can find a TB MIDI Stuff port of the editor in this post.
[Update: the Wave screen to the left has been updated with additional waveform names in via Jason Proctor. Updated screenshot below.]
TouchOSC editor for the Sequential Circuits Prophet VS. Click each pic for the full size shot. This editor was made with TouchOSC and is currently mapped for The Missing Link. You can, however, re-map it for Osculator or other. You can find the editor here and on The Missing Link forum here. Note in order for your Prophet-VS to responds to MIDI Sysex parameter changes you need to set "MIDI Parameters" under "MIDI Option Select" to enabled. Your MIDI device also has support MIDI Sysex.

The cool thing about this editor vs. editing directly on the Prophet VS is you can jump values. With the VS you select a parameter and use the slider to adjust, meaning to get from 15 to 120 you have to scroll through all values from 15 to 120. With this editor you can switch directly to 120 or any other value. I also created an XY pad for waveform selection, so instead of being limited with the onboard joystick for mix levels of the four oscillators only, you can use the additional XY pads for waveform selection (see bottom pic). Again you can jump parameters with the XY pads for both mix levels and waveform selection. This is not possible on the Prophet VS directly. And of course you can jump other slider values like cutoff frequency, resonance, and others. This allows you to play parameters in real time including creating manual rhythmic effects not possible on the VS directly.

Tal Sampler - Prophet VS sample pack out now!

64 Sequential Prophet VS Sample Patches for Togu Audio Line (TAL) Sampler. *
The Sequential Prophet VS vector synthesizer, by many hailed as the best hybrid synth ever.
Lush, smooth, gritty, crude, the best of both worlds, the Prophet VS is extremely versatile. I have meticulously sampled all my favorite (and original sounds) from this classic digital vector synth and turned it into a pack for the TAL sampler.

I've multi-sampled 5 or 6 notes for every patch. Some of the samples are very long to take full advantage of the stereo output and dynamic animation of the oscillators, so typical for the Prophet VSs audio engine. All sounds in this pack are recorded from the physical outputs of an original Prophet VS, through SSL Superanalogue preamps for the best audio quality. By me, personally.
Apart from a couple of drum sounds in the audio demo track, the audio demos features only 100% sounds from this pack. Some external reverb has been used on some of the sounds."

Sequential Prophet VS - Rüdiger Gaenslen favourite custom patches

Published on Jul 21, 2017 Rüdiger Gaenslen

"Sequential Prophet VS Digital Vector Synthesizer from 1986.

Recorded pure without any mastering, FX, EQ and anything else.

It is a hybrid synthesizer with 128 digital waveshapes (also basic waves for analog stuff) and analog curtis filter. It has 4 oscillators, you can mix with a vector stick and controll the mix with a envelope. You can save this mix as a new wave in ROM and create really fantastic and never heard sounds.

Further Infos to the Prophet VS and review:
http://www.muzines.co.uk/articles/sequential-s-prophet-vs/1617

The Prophet VS in this video has some mods from Syntthaste, Martin Höwner, in Bochum, Germnay. It has a new Fatar keyboard with velocity and aftertouch, a new PSU and new buttons, also an OLED Display.

Most of the sounds in this Demo are no factory sounds. They are my favourite custom sounds.

The VS is quite easy to program and you also can use hardware controller like stereoping or software controller like vector surgeon.

Actually it is my favourite synth, I even prefer him over my Prophet 5, Jupiter 8 and OBXa, because you can create extremely powerful analog sounding classic patches and very cold sounding mallets, bells, whistles and choirs. It is the best hybrid synthesizer ever IMO.

I hope, you enjoy the sounds and the video. I didnt use any effects, mastering, eq, its just pure VS in stereo directly into the audio interface. Cheers, Ruediger

Animoog Vector and Wave Sequencing Synthesis

YouTube Uploaded by matrixsynth on Oct 24, 2011
Hit play and read the following, then play it again and watch.
Update Oct 25 1:19 AM PST: made quite a few updates to the following description:

In my original post on Animoog, I touched on the PATH and ORBIT modules and how they reminded me of Vector synthesis on the SCI Prophet VS, Yamaha SY22 and TG33, and later the KORG Wavestation line of synths. The technology started with the Prophet VS and when Sequential went under, the technology went to Yamaha and finally KORG where Dave Smith actually consulted on the Wavestation (see here for some history). The Prophet VS and Yamaha synths were exclusively vector synths while the Wavestation added wave sequencing. The Animoog kind of falls somewhere in between. I thought I'd post this video to demonstrate just a little bit of the Animoog covering wave sequencing and vector like synthesis.

A quick primer: Vector synthesis typically consists of morphing between various oscillators or sound sources. Wave sequencing consists of sequencing through various oscillator wafeforms within an individual oscillator. In the Prophet VS and Yamaha SY22/TG33 you have four oscillators, each of which can be set to a different waveform ranging from your standard analog shapes to more complex digital shapes (note the DSI Evolver and Tempest come with the Prophet VS waveforms, but they are limited to two oscillators for these shapes and two for analog only). With a vector synth you can typically use a joystick to morph between the oscillators, so you have one oscillator in each of the four extremes of the joystick range. You can also set modulation sources and draw paths to morph between the oscillators but you can't see them like on Animoog. With wave sequencing on the KORG Wavestation line of synths each of the four oscillators can sequence between waveforms in addition to morphing between oscillators. Side note: Wavetable synthesis is similar, but instead of morphing between oscillators you sweep through a table of waveshapes for a given oscillator. It's a bit different, but both forms of synthesis can give you animated evolving sounds as they morph through shapes not usually possible with standard analog synthesis. The Animoog to my surprise can not only cover this but it does so rather elegantly. After setting your paths you can then move and adjust them in real time as you watch visual cues that let you actually see what is going on.

As for the video, first of all take a quick look at the animated gifs on this page (previously posted here). You'll note the X/Y pad is broken up with horizontal bars for sound source (oscillator waveforms - you get eight on the Animoog) and vertical bars for sound modulation and processing. Note the path through the eight sound sources is linear and a bit like wave sequencing, however you only effectively have two oscillators to morph through, while on the Prophet VS and other vector synths you have four. However, with the added axis for modulation you can get similar results with Animoog - more so than most other synths. In the video you will see a shape covering the XY pad. This is the path through the XY pad a sound will take once you trigger it. Up and down movement travels through the waveforms and left and right travels through modulation. You can actually see the sound traverse the pad. The "keys" are set to follow the path in line when pressed at the bottom. If I slide up a key, the note drifts from the path. That little moving light is the note (you'll notice additional notes get assigned a different color so you can easily identify each note visually). You can see this happening at the beginning of the video. I trigger the note and once it traverses the full patch, I then move up the key and you can see the sound orbiting the last point. The ORBIT module lets you adjust exactly how it orbits the path, but that is not covered in this video. What you'll also notice is each note works independently of each other so you can adjust the orbits of each note with how much you move up the key touch-plate for each. Think polyphonic aftertouch, something sorely missing in most hardware synths and keyboard controllers. In the video you will also see me adjust the speed the note travels through the path, as well as whether it's one shot (as in the beginning of the video), back and forth (reverse), or looped. In the end you will see the notes take a pentagram shape as I change the path, crank up the rate, and slide up the notes being held to move the orbit out a bit. Diabolical stuff. Note this is a very simple patch. You can obviously get pretty creative mixing different waveforms with different modulations settings, paths, and orbits.

And of course, Moog's description via the original post on Animoog:
"• Anisotropic Synth Engine (ASE) - An exciting new Moog technology that allows the user to move dynamically through an X/Y space of unique timbres to create an expressive and constantly evolving soundscape.

• Timbre page – Assemble unique sounds in the X/Y space from timbres of a wide variety of vintage and modern Moog synthesizers and pedals. Note: this is NOT simple sample playback.

• Polyphonic Modulation - Simply slide your fingers to control multiple modulation parameters in Animoog right from the keys."

"This VS was previously used with the upmost of care - only small cosmetic blemishes can be seen on the chassis (minor surface scratches and finish chips). Electronically, it is pristine and functions just as well as the day it was purchased. The Prophet VS was way ahead of its time; packed with incredible sounds and functions, the Prophet VS rivals some of the best sounding synths from today. The Prophet VS uses Vector Synthesis as its revolutionary new means of sound creation. It uses a total of four oscillators per voice with 127 waveforms (32 user) and dynamic waveform crossfading via the joystick. This was Sequential's first digital synth, and it was also their final synth, unfortunately. The Prophet VS is still a very sought after instrument because it has an incredible range of sounds!"
