Roland JUPITER v2.0 - Vocal Designer & Roland Cloud Connect -New JUPITER-X / Xm Synthesizer Firmware

video upload by Robert Saint John - JUPITER-Xpert

The press release:

Powerful New Creative Tools for Owners of the JUPITER-X and JUPITER-Xm Synthesizers

Los Angeles, CA, November 16, 2021 — Roland announces two powerful creative tools for all JUPITER-X and JUPITER-Xm synthesizer owners. The Vocal Designer Model Expansion brings the company’s acclaimed vocal synthesis technology to the JUPITER-X range, opening up a new world of expressive possibilities with the dynamic character of the human voice. Roland Cloud Connect unlocks instant access to an ever-expanding universe filled with thousands of iconic sounds and expansions using just a mobile device and the included wireless adapter.

Vocal Designer Model Expansion
The most expressive instrument in the world is the one inside us all—the human voice. With the Vocal Designer Model Expansion, players can add the warmth and expression of their voices to synthesized sounds, complete with deep customization options to craft unique and memorable tones. Roland has a long history in vocal synthesis, including the famous VP and V-Synth keyboards. Now, the Vocal Designer Model Expansion brings the pinnacle of this powerful technology to the JUPITER-X and JUPITER-Xm.

After connecting a microphone to the rear panel of the JUPITER-X/-Xm, the Vocal Designer Model Expansion allows all types of synthesizer sounds to be controlled and modulated with vocal input. This enables the performer to create otherworldly textures that blend the organic expression of the voice (the modulator) with a synthesized tone or instrument sound (the carrier). The Vocal Designer Model Expansion includes 26 different vocal synthesis algorithms with a wide range of customizable options. And any ZEN-Core tone can be used as a carrier, offering a staggering number of sonic possibilities.

In addition to all-new sounds, the Vocal Designer Model Expansion offers classic vocoder sounds derived from the legendary VP series, including choir and ensemble tones, robot voices, and more. And despite its name, the Vocal Designer Model Expansion isn’t just for voice. It’s possible to use nearly any analog audio or USB input source as a modulator, including drum machines, guitars, circuit-bent toys, DAW audio tracks, or anything the user can imagine.

Roland Cloud Connect
Roland Cloud Connect is a powerful new system that revolutionizes sound expansion for the JUPITER-X and JUPITER-Xm, providing wireless access to new sounds on demand. After plugging the included WC-1 wireless adapter into their instrument, owners can use the iOS/Android mobile app to browse, audition, and install Sound Packs, Wave Expansions, Model Expansions, and more from Roland Cloud. There's a comprehensive search engine for compatible content, and selections automatically synchronize with the user's Roland Account and Roland Cloud Manager software on a desktop computer.

The purchase of Roland Cloud Connect provides an entire year of the Pro membership tier of Roland Cloud. Included is unlimited use of over 30,000 sounds, plus the Vocal Designer Model Expansion and other Model Expansions for hardware or software instruments. There’s also a full library of authentic Roland virtual instruments for DAW production, including ZENOLOGY Pro and Legendary series titles like the JD-800, JX-8P, JUNO-60, TR-808, TR-909, and many more. And for creating on the go, the Zenbeats and Zentracker music production apps are available as well. After the first year, users can renew or scale their membership up or down to meet their needs.

Support for the Vocal Designer Model Expansion and Roland Cloud Connect is included with the free Version 2.0 update for the JUPITER-X and JUPITER-Xm.

Availability & Pricing

The Roland Vocal Designer Model Expansion is available now as a Lifetime Key for $149 through Roland Cloud, or it is also included with Roland Cloud Connect Pro membership.

Roland Cloud Connect will be available in January 2022 through authorized U.S. dealers for $99 and includes the WC-1 wireless adapter as well as one year of Roland Cloud Connect Pro membership for hardware and software.

Roland Announces New JUPITER-X Series

Published on Sep 5, 2019 RolandChannel

1499 Euros for the Xm, available soon. The Xm demo from sonicstate in the playlist sounds like my Jupiter-8. No four-voice limit like the Boutique series. Added XV-5080, & TR engines. This will be tempting.

ROLAND JUPITER-Xm - 4 Layers Performance by Gattobus
Roland Jupiter Xm | Roland 1909 Launches - sonicstate

"Since the release of the JUPITER-4 in 1978, the name JUPITER has marked the pinnacle of Roland sound and playability. With the new JUPITER-X series (available as 61-note JUPITER-X and 37-note portable JUPITER-Xm), classic Roland design and a powerful new sound engine combine to faithfully recreate sought-after instruments from our long history of genre-defining sounds—JUPITER-8, JUNO-106, SH-101, XV-5080, JX-8P, modern RD pianos, TR-808, TR-909, CR-78… and always expanding with more inspiring sounds.

Experience the next-generation arpeggiator, I-Arpeggio, that uses artificial intelligence to not only accompany you... but to inspire you. I-Arpeggio takes your input—notes, rhythms, phrases—and creates complementary drum parts, basslines, chords, and arpeggio lines, simultaneously.

Both the JUPITER-Xm and JUPITER-X feature metal construction for durability.

Both the JUPITER-Xm and JUPITER-X can "layer up to five parts, four for synths and one for drums. Its engine can power multiple authentic Roland classics like the JX-8P or JUPITER-8 with enough polyphony to create thick layers and complex backing parts. Create the perfect bass and lead split with an SH-101 and JUNO-106, layer a rich RD piano with lush JX-8P strings, or make a monster stack of JUPITER-8s."

Both the JUPITER-Xm and JUPITER-X are "equipped with our latest sound engine, capable of morphing into legendary synths from our long history of genre-defining sounds. It’s so flexible that it can reproduce our highly sought-after analog classics like the JUPITER-8, JUNO-106, and SH-101, as well as digital machines like the vintage XV-5080 and modern RD pianos. You also get the many Roland drum machines that are the foundation of electronic and dance music like the TR-808, TR-909, CR-78, and more. It’s like a studio full of vintage gear, with modern capabilities and a deep synth engine so you can explore unmapped sonic territory.

Both the JUPITER-Xm and JUPITER-X are "part of an expandable platform, so it can be updated with fresh new content as it becomes available. It can also directly share sounds and other contents with the highly-mobile JUPITER-Xm."

New Roland JUNO-X: First Impressions, Patch Building, Features & Review

video upload by MR TUNA Music

"My friends--- I can finally say it: The Juno-X is HERE.
What an honour to be a part of the launch campaign with my friends at Roland. I am a huge advocate for the original Jupiter-X and all of its amazing capabilities, and the new Juno-X does EVERYTHING the Jupiter does in a more accessible and more inexpensive package--- it even has stereo speakers under the hood!

Here is my day 1 review of this awesome synthesizer.

Roland JUNO-X - DEMO by gattobus: "Distant Memories"

video upload by gattobus

"Here is the new Roland JUNO-X!!!
Every sound you hear in this video comes from this instrument, no overdubs, everything's been played in real time using the 5 internal parts, iArpeggio and the step sequencer.
Inside of each unit that you will find in the stores, there's also a piece of me as I had the privilege to create a lot of factory tones, scenes and the new iArpeggio 2.0 patterns!
I put a lot of love into it and I'm so happy with the final result. I have never felt so good with a synth since System-8, my first real job for Roland. It's a great honour for me to collaborate with them.
This simple song that I played, is not just a demo, it's a declaration of love towards life, for the fact that it led me to do (at least for me) the most beautiful job in the world.
I would like to thank president Jun-Ichi Miki, Hisakazu Yamasato, Akihiro Nagata, Yoshinori Iwamoto, Gota Miyabashira and all the amazing people in Roland I've been in contact with during the last 5 years. You are like superheroes to me, you're really making my dreams come true.
I hope this is only the beginning.
Happy 50th Anniversary Roland!!! 🧡"

The Legendary JUNO Experience Reimagined with the Power of Roland’s ZEN-Core Synthesis System

Los Angeles, CA, April 26, 2022 — Roland announces JUNO-X, a new polyphonic synthesizer driven by the next-generation ZEN-Core Synthesis System. JUNO-X brings the best of the past together with Roland’s latest technologies, reimagining the vintage JUNO experience with vastly expanded sound possibilities and free-flowing tools tuned for today’s music. It delivers the full capabilities of the native ZEN-Core engine, along with genuine recreations of the JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 synths plus other legacy Roland instruments.

Standing among the greatest analog synthesizers ever created, Roland’s iconic JUNO lineup has had a massive impact on music for over four decades. The warm, organic sounds of the JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 defined countless ’80s pop hits and played a huge role in the emergence of techno, house, synthwave, and other electronic styles. JUNO-X delivers the vintage JUNO spirit that continues to inspire leading music makers, coupled with the power and versatility needed for modern workflows.

JUNO-X includes JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 Models, plus an all-new JUNO-X engine with a Super Saw waveform, velocity sensitivity, pitch envelope control, and other evolved features. The two beloved chorus modes from the originals are also available, plus a third mode with even more fatness and swirl. Users can combine them to create seven different chorus effects for use with any JUNO-X tone.

JUNO-X features additional Models from the historic Roland canon, including the PCM-based XV-5080, acoustic pianos from the RD series, and an expressive Vocoder. Model Expansions from Roland Cloud are supported as well, giving players the ability to load optional titles such as the JUPITER-8, JD-800, SH-101, Vocal Designer, and others.

Roland Cloud is also home to a growing range of Wave Expansions, Sound Packs, Sample Packs, and other creative tools, and ten free Sound Packs are available with a JUNO-X purchase. Additionally, JUNO-X provides integrated support for Roland Cloud Connect, a powerful option that includes the WC-1 wireless adapter and one year of Roland Cloud Pro membership. This allows users to browse, audition, and load Model Expansion titles and other Pro membership content directly to the keyboard via Wi-Fi.

A key element of the JUNO’s appeal was a straightforward interface that made it easy to craft inspiring sounds and evolving textures in the heat of the moment. With a familiar hands-on panel inspired by the original 1980s synths, JUNO-X invites players to fully immerse in the music and create without limits. Up to four tones can be layered together, and a wide selection of modern effects are available for enhancing sounds. First introduced with JUPITER-X, the powerful I-Arpeggio function offers both traditional arpeggio sounds and organic, inspiring movement driven by intelligent algorithms.

JUNO-X comes equipped with an expressive 61-note keyboard with aftertouch and loads of connectivity for every musical workflow, including balanced and unbalanced audio outputs, a stereo audio input, and MIDI I/O. There’s also a mic input for vocal performing or feeding the onboard Vocoder. USB is available for data backup, audio/MIDI communication with DAWS, and remote editing with the free JUNO-X Editor for macOS and Windows. A high-quality stereo speaker system provides built-in sound monitoring, and Bluetooth® is available for streaming music from a mobile device.

Availability & Pricing

The Roland JUNO-X Programmable Polyphonic Synthesizer will be available in the U.S. in May for $1999.99."

--- Original post prior to the above follows (pics replaced with hi res versions - click them for the full size shots) ---

This is just breaking - no press release or info on Roland's site yet. Until then, some pics and features. As you can see this one is based on the Juno-106 design. The UI is as important as the engine and it looks like Roland may have nailed this one. The one problem with the original Juno-106 are those BA662A voice chips that fail over time. I've had a couple go and they are not simple to replace. You have to unsolder multiple pins on them to remove them.

What's interesting is it appears Roland is releasing classic physical designs with overlapping synth engines. The JUPITER-X has the JUPITER-8, JX-8P, JUNO-106, SH-101, XV-5080, RD, Vocoder, and ZEN-Core engines. The Juno-X has JUNO-106, Juno-60, XV-5080, RD, Vocoder, and ZEN-Core. So the X adds the Juno-60 but is missing the Jupiter-8, JX-8P, and SH-101? The Juno-X adds built-in speakers like the Jupiter-Xm. Interesting they note the speakers were inspired by the Juno-60 below. The Juno-60 did not have built-in speakers. The Juno-106S and SynthPlus 60 did.

Features:

Over 4,000 presets from historic Roland products including the JUNO-106, Juno-60, XV-5080, RD series of pianos, and classic vocoder model

Model Expansions incorporate even more Roland history and sound-design technology to offer nearly endless options for sonic exploration

Newly engineered Super Saw oscillator, Chorus III effect, and more use ZEN-core Synthesis to deliver a worthy holder of the Juno gauntlet

Layer up to 4 different sounds for unparalleled tone design opportunities

Intuitive interface enables straightforward sound design and modification

Ergonomic arrangements encourage breezy workflow, setup recall, and preset management with Scenes (up to 256 global setup presets)

Free Juno-X Editor software is included to give you even deeper access to making your sounds your own

Classic design and robust hardware seamlessly blend satisfying tactility with precision control

Aftertouch and assignable sliders and switches provide great range of expressivity

Retro arpeggiator and I-Arpeggiator can be freely toggled to allow for greater rhythmic flourish
USB audio/MIDI interface and USB memory port for data backup, computer connection, and more

Onboard stereo speakers (inspired by the Juno-60) and Bluetooth compatibility make it easy to jam along to any accompanying track

Dedicated microphone input includes its own effects to model inputs and vocoded sounds

Multi-effects suite includes multiple forms of reverb, delay, chorus, EQ, compression, and overdrive

Output jacks for hold and control pedals allow for expansion of expressive control

3.5mm and 1/4-inch headphone outputs, L/Mono and R 1/4-inch main outs, and L/R XLR outs

Iconic 1990s Digital Synth Now Available for the ZENOLOGY Software Synthesizer and Select ZEN-Core Hardware Instruments

Los Angeles, CA, March 2, 2021 — Roland announces the JD-800 Model Expansion, the latest addition to the ZEN-Core Model Expansion lineup available through Roland Cloud. New Roland Jupiter-80 Pics & Specs Leaked?

via the Roland Clan Forums

This one in via Soviet Space Child

Also see this post.

via wladymeer in the Roland Clan Forums thread:
"As it's meant for live performers, I don't think it's wrong at all. Especially because you could probably enter effect selection with SHIFT+ON/OFF shortcut and assign, lets say, distortion or delay instead of effect. Afterall, Juno-Stage had such knob next to high/low EQ.

Face it, Jupiter-80 is not gonna be next Fantom. Consider it more as a advanced stage piano. In other words, as a Nord Stage. I saw on one website that Nord Stage 73 costs $3.299,00 - you tell me - why Jupiter-80 can't cost the same if it's not workstation?

And here's my overview of front panel buttons:

• USB MEMORY SONG PLAYER/RECORDER - guess we can record directly on USB thumb drive?
• D-BEAM section with typical assign: PITCH, VOLUME and ASSIGNABLE
• CONTROL section with:
Arpeggio: HOLD, ON/OFF for LOWER and UPPER and TEMPO (probably tap tempo)
bellow something that's called either VISUAL CONTROL or V-LINK CONTROL and HARMONY INTELIGENCE
and last is typical Roland TRANSPOSE, OCTAVE DOWN and UP
• PART BALANCE section:
LOWER, UPPER, SOLO faders with ON/OFF buttons
I can't read what's on that white fader, but my guess is just for piano sounds. You can see there are 3 "gray" buttons saying piano, e. piano and clav so my guess that fader is just for that type of sounds.
• Then we have some MENU and SHIFT buttons below display and 4 encoders in between with display showing what they're controlling, typical DEC/INC, wheel, EXIT and WRITE on the right...
• REVERB section with ON/OFF button
• SONG PLAYER/RECORDER with usual controls (so I guess, phrase recording will be possible)

And last row seems to have next (my best guess with (?) where I'm not sure):

• ROTARY SOUND section ON/OFF and SLOW/FAST buttons
• LOWER section:
- SPLIT
- BASS
- PAD
- CHOIR
- STRINGS
- SYNTH STRINGS (?)
- BRASS / SAX
- SYNTH BRASS (?)
- WOOD WINDS (?)
- Something white labeled
- ALTERNATE ON/OFF (guess every button has two alternates?)

• UPPER section:
- PIANO
- E. PIANO
- CLAV
- CHURCH BELLS (?)
- ??? BELLS (?)
- THEATER ORGAN (?)
- GUITAR
- SYNTH LEAD
- VIBES/MARIMBA
- ACCORDION/HARMONICA
- Something white labeled
- ALTERNATE ON/OFF

• SOLO section:
- VIOLIN
- TRUMPET
- SAX
- FLUTE
- OBOE (?)
- BELL
- Something white labeled
- ALTERNATE ON/OFF
- SOLO SPLIT

Beneath keybed, there is WRITE (or maybe REC?), PREV and NEXT buttons on the ends and in between it seems that it will have SH-201 system with 4 banks up with 8 patches per bank. Hope it's just USER bank but then again... come on... it's 2011 we're talking about! What's wrong with 1000 user slots idea?"

I've managed to get a copy of the entire magazine (I know this is wrong!) from another forum, and this ad is at the beggining of the magazine.

Roland Jupiter-80 Musikmesse 2011 PREVIEW :)

Update:

Original Jupiter 8 Explained

YouTube Uploaded by DanKrisher on Apr 5, 2011

"The original JP8 was a live performance synth."

And some pics from Create Digital Music's post on the Jupiter-80 where you'll get Peter Kirn's take on the new synth. In simplest terms, the Jupiter-80 is being touted as a performers' synth with the emphasis on performance and playability. The video above makes the connection with the mindset behind the original Jupiter-8.

On the synthesis front, the Jupiter-80 uses Roland's SuperNATURAL engine.

"SuperNATURAL is more than a single sound, effect, or operation. Each type of instrument, whether string or keyboard, wind or percussion, ethnic or even electronic, subtly shapes sound in its own unique way. Particular characteristics enable different forms of tonal expressiveness. SuperNATURAL provides the ability to realistically shape the physical parameters of virtual instruments in organic and expressive ways. Across the broad and varied forms of Roland musical instruments, SuperNATURAL is the gateway to a new universe of expression.

SuperNATURAL is available in many forms. There are SuperNATURAL ARX expression boards for Fantom-G, for example. First out of the gate are the stunning ARX-01 Drums board and the ARX-02 Electric Piano Electric Piano. The RD-700GX has SuperNATURAL Electric Piano built in, giving you amazingly expressive electric piano sounds. In addition, thanks to SuperNATURAL technology, all the characteristic control of acoustic organs are provided on Roland’s Music Atelier Organs."

Update: the official description:

"One of the most revered prefixes in the history of synthesis returns. Welcome the arrival of the JUPITER-80— a live-performance powerhouse that pays homage to its legendary namesake with road-proven hardware and massive sound, yet blasts into the future with advanced SuperNATURAL technology. The JUPITER-80’s expressive, organic approach to synthesis makes a new world of sound design possible with multilayered SuperNATURAL textures under the control of a full-color touchscreen and creative hands-on controllers. Experience the metamorphosis of a legend with the all-new JUPITER-80!

Powerful integrated SuperNATURAL synthesis engines designed for legendary vintage synth sounds to realistic organic acoustic sounds and more
Single Tone is equivalent to the performance of powerful single synthesizer—stack four of these to create a mind-blowing “Live Set”
Tone Blender tweaks multiple parameters of tones in realtime for complex, emotive sonic movement during performance
Fast, friendly operation with intuitive front panel and color touchscreen optimized for live performance
76-note semi-weighted synth keyboard, and 256 polyphonic voices (varies according to sound-generator load)
USB-memory Song Player/Recorder for backing tracks or quick idea capture
Easy integration with computers via built-in USB-MIDI/Audio interface

Past, Present, and Future Sound

The JUPITER-80 nods to its past with lethal, multi-layered SuperNATURAL synthesizer tones so fat you’ll need a knife to cut through it, but that’s only the beginning of what this powerhouse synth will do. Gigging musicians will love the stockpile of essential sounds onboard, including Roland’s famous SuperNATURAL Piano, strings, brass, and much more. The JUPITER-80 puts a fast-access user interface under your fingers—a dream for live performance. Its heavyweight design, complete with metal side panels, recalls the legendary JUPITER but with a modern twist.
Powerful Live Sets Featuring Four-Tone Structure and Registrations

JUPITER-80’s sound engine handles four x tones with dedicated DSP per tone as a basic unit “Live Set” for manual performance. Layering of Upper and Lower Live Sets, plus a specialized “SOLO” part, means the incredibly massive nine-tone-stack sound. Customized complex settings can be saved as Registrations, and easily recalled during live performance.
Tone Blender

You will love the deep possibilities of the stackable SuperNATURAL architecture and unique features such as Tone Blender, which tweaks values of multiple parameters simultaneously and lets you “Capture” any new combination and save it as a Live Set. Create complex, emotional textures that respond, react, and evolve like nothing you’ve heard before. Tone Blender can also dramatically enhance your live-performance capabilities by letting you assign its multiple parameters to controllers such as the D Beam."

And the official site is live. You'll find the intro video there.

"Choosing the demo for this video was a tough call, because the demo player did three totally different ones - from a Zappa-esque piece in 15/16, to a more lyrical demo, to an electro-type mashup called "Oh My God." This is the techno one, because I think most people weren't expecting that kind of sound from the Jupiter-80. Yes, it does strings, brass, pianos, and all that...but this demo shows that there's more to this synth than meets the spec sheet."

The Roland Jupiter-X & XM Story and Why Roland Has No Plans for a New JUPITER-8

I don't like to critique but I thought the following was a little funny (also see my note on Behringer below):

"We are very aware of the very strong passion that synth fans have for the JUPITER-8, and some continue to wait for us to introduce a true analog version. This is something we do not plan to do. Our founder Mr. Kakehashi always said, 'Never chase a ghost', and I really understand his meaning. 'Chasing the ghost' of the original JUPITER-8 or TR-808 does not make sense as we will never catch them, and this effort would not align with our vision for the future. Roland has developed many legendary products throughout our history that came from our drive to always design the future by applying the latest technology and our unique know-how from each era. This is our DNA which will never change."

Preceded by:

"Different from the base Virtual Analog of ZEN-Core, the ABM-powered 'Model Bank' synths in the JUPITER-X and Xm reproduce the total character of specific vintage synths including the JUPITER-8, JUNO-106, JX-8P, and SH-101, all with incredible precision. For these synths, we did deep behavioral analysis of elements such as the filter’s curve, range, and response speed, which are different for each model, of course. We even recreate characteristics including oscillator drift driven by temperature changes- we actually put a physical temperature sensor inside the JUPITER-X and Xm to help with this!"

The above is quoted from The Roland Jupiter-X & XM Story posted on Roland's site. There's more to the post, of course, so do check it out, but what I thought was a little funny was the 'Never chase a ghost' quote. They are clearly doing just that, only in the digital realm, not analog. But... they have ventured in analog with the JD-Xa and JD-Xi. Do I think Roland should clone the Jupiter-8 and their vintage analog? No. For one reason: Behringer. Behringer would just put them under with cheaper models, so if I were Roland, I wouldn't bother. I'm guessing the digital clones are more cost effective as well. I'd stay focused on new products just like they are doing now.  Seriously, Behringer has made it so no company will ever bother cloning their previous products.  I heard that Behringer's goal is to not only offer clones of vintage synths, but to become the largest synth manufacturer for both vintage and new designs.  Simply put, the only way to compete will be to create gear that users want and Behringer does not offer for less.

Roland JUPITER-X vs JUPITER-Xm: FIGHT! Thoughts on the Two Synthesizers

video by Robert Saint John

"Can there be only one?
---
As you may have seen in my recent video, I just purchased the full-size Roland JUPITER-X synthesizer, despite already having the JUPITER-Xm. Now that I've had a few days with it, I wanted to do a video review talking about my first impressions, why I made the decision to go ahead and get an X now, and how I feel it compares to my JUPITER-Xm. This is just commentary, no music, and it's not a tutorial. There's no "sound comparison" to do with these virtually identical synths. But there haven't been many opportunities for reviewers to talk about both of them. I thought it might help those who are on the fence about whether to buy one, which one to choose and, if you already have one of them, should you consider switching?"
