1st test with the Drum Machine part of the Roland MC 707 - Sound Provider

"The Roland MC-707 GROOVEBOX has everything electronic music producers need to create a song or perform a live set without a computer. The MC-707 is armed with an eight-track sequencer optimized for fluid production, our latest deep synthesis engine, a powerful sampler, massive effects palette and 16 ultra-sensitive pads for playing or sequencing drum parts, melodic basslines, or polyphonic chord progressions.

The MC-707’s eight-track sequencer is made for today's electronic-focused music styles and ever-evolving subgenres. The TR-REC step sequencer is just like those found on classic Roland drum machines, perfect for building rhythm parts quickly. There are also 16 ultra-sensitive pads for playing or sequencing drum parts, melodic basslines, or polyphonic chord progressions.

The MC-707 features our latest sound engine, which fuses virtual analog and modern PCM. It’s flexible, powerful, and lets you dig deep into its sonic capabilities. It has the sounds of legendary Roland rhythm machines and synthesizers that are the foundation of electronic music—including the TR-808, TR-909, TB-303, JUNO-106, and SH-101. But the MC-707 also looks forward, with modern digital and hybrid sounds perfect for creating future classics—today.

In addition to its deep synthesis engine, the MC-707 has a powerful sampler with on-the-fly recording that synchronizes to your project's tempo and works as an updateable and expandable platform that never gets stale. Keep things fresh with new loops, one-shots, phrases, and synth sounds—all available online."

"The Roland MC-101 GROOVEBOX combines premium-quality synthesizer and drum sounds, samples, patterns and effects in a compact four-track sequencer that’s go-everywhere portable. Create whenever, and wherever, inspiration strikes with this pocket production studio and add performance-ready tracks to your DAWless or compact synthesizer setup.

The MC-101 has a four-track sequencer optimized for beatmakers, producers and mobile music makers creating today's electronic and dance-oriented music. You can use the 16 ultra-sensitive RGB pads to create drum, bass, and synthesizer patterns and create your own original music. It's your musical playground, where you can freely combine loops and one-shots with melodic phrases including your own imported audio recordings and MIDI sequences. Compose and trigger clips, rearrange, re-sample, record your knob movements, and more.

On top of that, add the Roland sounds that have defined electronic and dance genres for over forty years. Legendary instruments like the TR-808, TR-909, JUNO-106 and SH-101 are all here, ready to replicate classic sounds or be combined, tweaked, and processed into entirely new sounds.

With the MC-101's massive effects palette, your music sounds polished and fully-produced. Each track has independent effects processors with a huge number of variations. The lush chorus brings depth to pads and other synth sounds. Delays and reverbs create evocative spaces and add movement to delicate sequences. Overdrive, distortion, and amp simulation add grit and intensity to synths, guitars, drums and more. You can also run your entire mix through master effects like filters, bit-crushers and a master bus compressor that glues it all together with punch and clarity."

video upload by RolandChannel

"Version 1.8 update for the MC-707 GROOVEBOX, MC-101 GROOVEBOX, and VERSELAB MV-1 adds a host of requested features to your instrument. In this video, Zeale walks through the new enhancements for each instrument as well as how to import clips and new Production Packs.

New functions include undo/redo plus clip import, export, and save. Clip compatibility between the MC-707, MC-101, and VERSELAB MV-1 means you can load clips straight from an SD card, then save and share between units or with other MC and VERSELAB users. There are also three brand-new MFX to embellish your sound—Exciter, Phonograph, and JD Multi—as well as support for pitch bend, hold, and other MIDI CC recording options.

Expand your sound and clip library with new MC/MV Production Packs. These top-shelf collections of clips and sample-based tones designed by Wave Alchemy will expand your sound library or jump-start new ideas for songs. Each Production Pack contains 48 custom tones, 50-plus drum one-shots, 16 kits, and 64 clips—with clips organized in groups of four for building 16 custom scenes.

If you’re an MC-707 GROOVEBOX owner, you can now set the key and scale of your project. And there’s a multitrack mode for Pad Note.

If you’re an MC-101 GROOVEBOX owner, you’ll find a game-changing partial editor for creating compelling tones directly from your MC-101. Plus, you can set the key and scale of each of your projects.

If you’re a VERSELAB MV-1 owner, this update includes a powerful random tone designer for quickly creating interesting sounds from a variety of algorithms. The update also adds another much-requested feature: vocal take panning.

And that’s not all. Find more under the hood when you download the Version 1.8 update.

Roland MC-101 & MC-707 GROOVEBOX v1.7 Update: Scene Chain, Audio Insert Enhancements, and more

video by RolandChannel

"Dig into Version 1.7 for the Roland MC-707 and MC-101 and take your creativity to the next level with the latest GROOVEBOX features and enhancements.

Now it’s easy to create tracks in a more traditional song structure. The new Scene Chain feature can automate the groove and free your focus for other aspects of your performance. Chain Scenes sequentially and set playback length for evolving arrangements, or turn off the chain on a Scene to vamp or transition to new ideas.

The Audio Insert function is fantastic for live applications, turning the MC-101 or MC-707 into a performance mixer for routing external audio into the various effects. V1.7’s updated Audio Insert functionality now allows routing of internal tracks one into the next, creating opportunities to stack MFX for intricate, layered effects textures.

Use the upgraded Chord Designer to auto-assign chords chromatically or diatonically within a selected scale, making it easy to apply changes across all your pads.

No matter how you use it, this feature-packed update is sure to help boost your beats and expand your sound.

In this video, Peter Brown introduces you to the new MC GROOVEBOX features in Version 1.7:

Getting to know the Roland MC-707 (jam and thoughts)

Published on Oct 22, 2019 Jay Hosking

"A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by the feature set and sounds of the Roland MC-707. Overall, I find it to have great synth sounds and some fun performance features (knobs for filter and assignable parameters, master-level effects including DJFX from SP-404, and greatly expanded scatter effects) but also to have some odd design choices (not frontloading the parameters you want, distinctly unmusical scatter presets, thousands of pointless and bad synth presets) and some unfortunate drawbacks (voice stealing, most notably). Overall, a super fun all-in-one groovebox, but I'm still pining for Novation to make a proper successor to the Circuit.

Roland MC-707 — six synth tracks (noisy pad, arp, lead, bass, 2x clean pads), two drum tracks (regular and filtered), sequencing, and effects

Sequences written over the last couple weeks, performed and uploaded as is, with only a little compression/limiting on the master.

Roland MC-101, JU-06A, and Octatrack MK2 performance at Patchwerks

Published on Apr 18, 2020 Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT) performs on the Roland MC-101, the Roland JU-06A, and the Elektron Octatrack. The focus of the performance was to showcase the MC-101's potential in a live scenario, playing with other instruments.

From Roland:
"Produce and perform music anywhere, anytime—without clutter or complications. The MC-101 GROOVEBOX has all the high-quality sounds, sequencing, and effects of the professional MC-707, in a compact four-track version that’s go-everywhere portable. Get started with an inspiring collection of ready-to-go sounds and patterns, or easily create your own. Craft a unique style by importing custom sounds and loops that sync to tempo. And you can perform with the MC-101, triggering clips and shaping your sounds with direct, hands-on control."

Order the Roland MC-101 here: https://bit.ly/roand_mc_101

From Roland:
"The JU-06A is the best of the JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 in one synth. It has the continuous high-pass filter of the 106, the envelope-controllable pulse-width-modulation of the 60, and the unique filter behavior of both, instantly switchable from the front panel. The sound is indistinguishable from its vintage counterparts, even while tweaking controls or using extreme settings. And no vintage JUNO would be complete without the swirling sound of its legendary chorus, faithfully recreated, right down to the lovable (and thankfully adjustable) noise."

Order Roland JU-06A here: http://bit.ly/Roland_JU-06A

From Elektron:
"During its seven year life span, the original Octatrack quickly became one of the most widely used live performance samplers. An industry standard if there ever was one. It undoubtedly changed the way gear setups look like and gave artists the power to perform live in the truest sense of the word. Now the Octatrack MKII is here. Sharper, better, more robust. It proudly carries the legacy of its predecessor, confirming the position as the creative artist’s instrument of choice."

Generative music algorithm plays Roland MC-707

video upload by Richard Horsman

"This new algorithm generates midi note, volume and controller data on 8 channels, one for each Roland MC-707 track. Note events occur when circles traverse the 3 horizontal lines. Volume changes occur when circles are destroyed in the black hole. Controller data and additional note events are generated by tracking the last notes played on some of the channels. Every aspect of the algorithm is probabilistic.

Designed and coded by Tony Horsman (my Dad)"

And one from Sep 12, 2021:

MidiPathFollower - An experiment in generative music creation (MC-101 and Eurorack)

"The artwork that I'm currently working on takes your eyes on a journey. My Dad suggested that the journey be travelled by a 'playhead' that makes sound/music when it hits 'notes'. This is the outcome. As always, it's a work in progress. Playheads work their way around a path/map, making decisions in real time as to which way to turn. When all notes have been reached a new map is drawn. The code that I wrote in Processing is running on a Raspberry Pi 4 with a 720x720 Hyperpixel Square LCD attached. It's generating the visuals and the MIDI data that's being sent to my Roland MC-101 for the guitar sounds then on to some effects in my modular rack."

Vanderson plays - Shamen "Indica" - cover on Roland MC-707

video upload by ॐ Vanderson ॐ

"Yesterday, Saturday evening, I reached for my favorite album by Shamen - Hempton Manor. One of the great songs on it, is of course "Indica". I decided to have some fun and create a cover of this track using only the Roland MC-707 (not for the first time, because many years ago on YT I posted a short recording using only the Roland MC-808).
This time I approached it in more detail. Of course, it was difficult to convey this characteristic atmosphere of the mid-90s. But something came out of it :)
The whole thing was recorded by ear - I used only one sample from the original (the characteristic click) that accompanies the recording from the very beginning."

And Roland's press release:

A new synth engine embodying nearly 50 years of experience

Anaheim, CA, January 15, 2020 — Roland (NAMM Hall A, Booth #10702), announces the ZEN-Core Synthesis System, a powerful new engine found at the heart of the company’s latest (and future) electronic instruments. With ZEN-Core, Roland applies the wisdom gained from nearly 50 years of making world-leading analog, digital, and hybrid synthesizers to create an adaptable new platform that both embraces the legendary and looks to what’s next.

Through ZEN-Core, Roland assures a consistent level of sonic quality and expression regardless of instrument. With the confidence of access to the same, growing library of compatible sounds that they can share and exchange, musicians and producers can focus on choosing hardware with features that best suit their application, playing style and workflow, from performance and production synthesizers to GROOVEBOXES, stage pianos, and more.

With the forthcoming system updates, owners of FANTOM 6/7/8 Synthesizers (Version 1.50*), JUPITER-X Series Synthesizers (Version 1.10) and RD-88 Stage Pianos will be able to start using the same compatible sounds across all models, adding a new collaborative capability to their instruments. An update for the MC-101 and MC-707 GROOVEBOXES will also be available in Q2 2020, with an update planned for AX-EDGE later this year.

ZEN-Core base engine tones created on one instrument can be shared with other users or transferred into completely different compatible Roland hardware. Performers can take sounds made on a FANTOM and play them in the spotlight on an AX-Edge Keytar, or perform a JUPITER-X synth patch on an RD-88, dramatically simplifying setup and expanding tonal options. Sounds are easily shared with a bandmate or co-creator, even when using different compatible Roland hardware. With ZEN-Core, users have access to the sounds they want, in the format they want, wherever they produce or perform.

The Roland ZEN-Core multi-timbral engine combines the latest Virtual Analog and PCM (up to 256 voices) synthesis techniques with powerful DSP effects. Advanced synthesis features include new VA oscillators, precisely modeled filters, ultra-fast and smooth LFO and envelope modulators, and high-resolution control of primary editing and performance parameters. Sounds created for the base engine will be compatible across all ZEN-Core instruments, opening-up a world of opportunities for creators and sound designers alike.

ZEN-Core supports instrument-specific ZEN-Core Expansions including Analog Behavior Modeling for the JUPITER-X series and V-Piano for the new FANTOM Series. Further ZEN-Core expansions will soon arrive for other instruments in the Roland ZEN-Core family.

For more on Roland ZEN-Core, please visit Roland.com.

*Beta version as of today. Official release is planned in late January 2020.

Roland MC-303 Groovebox

Published on Sep 12, 2018 tiergrinder

"Roland MC-303 Groovebox was my second "synth" that I ever got, and I think I got it around 2001. Others were buying MC-505 and MC-307's back then, but I had to settle for second hand MC-303.

Rolands MC-303 has got it's fair share of bashing during all these years, but there is still something that I really like about it. I have always thought that MC-303's drum samples were good and it had better drum kits that following MC-307 and 505. Especially the 808 sounds have great presence. Kicks and toms boom, Snares and claps snap like they should and hihats sizzle bright.

TR-909 sounds are good too, the toms have that round full sound and snares and kicks pound like they should. Maybe the hihats are bit weaker, but thats made up with great ride and crash cymbals. On top of these the MC-303 has tons of great percussions from 707 and 727 drum machines and lots of acoustic drum sounds for break beats, jungle and drum'n'bass. And it has that classic TR-recording in its sequencer, where you can tap the beat realtime or use the classix X0X style programming.

This first simple demo shows some of the better preset patterns and templates that are hidden in underneath all that late 90's crazy techno and goa trance stuff."
