Audio Damage Introduces AD057 Axon 3

video upload by ObXession

via Audio Damage

"A drum sequencer that thinks outside the box, where each beat is a live wire, sparking and connecting to create a rhythm that's alive. That's Axon 3 for you - not just an update but a complete overhaul of our legendary Axon series. This isn't your ordinary drum machine; it's a sonic adventure, blending the familiar with the futuristic.

At the heart of Axon 3 lies a sequencer inspired by the complex workings of artificial neural networks. Picture neurons, buzzing with energy, passing triggers in a dance of precision and chaos. When a neuron hits its trigger threshold, it doesn't just respond; it sings, through its internal synth voice, sends a pulse out into the MIDI universe, or both. The connections between these neurons aren't random; they're the building blocks of a rhythm sequencer unlike any. And with a dash of probability magic, we've introduced a drum programming style that's utterly unique.

But that's not all. Each neuron in Axon 3 comes equipped with a powerhouse of a synth voice, drawing on the best of both subtractive and FM synthesis, supercharged with a model inspired by our Boomtschack analog hardware drum module.

Axon 3 wraps all this rhythmic innovation in a sleek interface complete with a full mixer, crystalline delay, punchy compressor, and multiple outputs. Whether you're crafting yout next IDM masterpiece, scoring a film, or just exploring new sonic territories, Axon 3 is your co-pilot in this thrilling journey into sound.

So, are you ready to break the rhythm barrier? Welcome to Axon 3.

CHANGES FROM VERSION 2
• Greatly expanded synthesizer voice, with a full model of our Boomtschack analog drum synthesizer hardware (RIP).

• Pitch and scale quantizing of the internal synthesizer voices, for easier melodic programming.

• Extensive randomizer for changing some or all parameters.

• Cymbal oscillator from Tattoo added to noise section.

• Rough Rider compressor added to master output.

• Likelihood of trigger event and ratcheting added to sequencer, to greatly expand the rhythmic potential.

FEATURES
• Artificial Neural Network sequencer features seven neurons, and is easily programmed to create strange new repeating rhythms.

• Seven FM/VA percussion voices that also buss together to create a single monolithic complex percussion synthesizer, via AM and FM busses.

• Full mixer with pan, level, mute, and solo on each voice.

• Built-in stereo delay, for live playability.

• Built-in Rough Rider compressor on the main outputs.

• MIDI in and out, for driving Axon's voices from DAW and hardware sequencers, or driving other software and hardware from Axon.

• Internal transport for non-synchronized playback.

• Resizable vector-based user interface.

• XML-based cross-platform, human-readable preset system, with copy/paste, for easy transferring of your own presets and third-party offerings."

JVSY Live Oi Kwan Barbers | Novation Performance

video upload by Novation

"JVSY performs their music at Oi Kwan Barbers, a Canton-style barber shop, with the Novation Summit, SL MkIII, Peak, Launchpad Pro Mk3 and a Eurorack system.

JVSY said the concept was 'to create a piece of music that is minimal but conveys our impression on the unique shooting location that is Oi Kwan Barbers. The location gave us both a nostalgic and familiar feeling, which inspired us emotionally in creating this live set.'

'Novation products were used extensively on both the production and live recording of the piece. The Summit was the primary keyboard synthesizer used for the live shooting, while the Novation SL MkIII was used primarily to clock and trigger other synthesizers such as the Peak and our Eurorack system. The flexibility of the Launchpad also allowed us to trigger samples we collected that are relevant to the shooting location and to make live changes to various audio effect settings we prepared in advance.' - JVSY

Dark jam with the Ableton Push 3 Standalone (live performance)

video upload by Jay Hosking

"A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on the Ableton Push 3 Standalone, recorded to a stereo audio out.

I'm hoping to play some more live shows this year, and that means I want to create another live set. I thought that if I were creating a new live set, I might as well create a bunch of new songs at the same time. And if I were creating new songs, I might as well try a completely different style/genre of music.

So here's my first attempt. The Push 3 Standalone is still the best choice for me, in terms of making a live set. It has its limitations and foibles for performance, but in terms of sheer number of tracks and effects, in terms of sequencing length and arrangement, and in terms of reducing the mental juggling necessary during a set, the Push 3 works well for me.

Many of the tracks were bounced down to audio, to increase the number of elements in the song. I may also eventually add a stereo effects loop with the Zen Delay, but that's for a future video. For now, I'm happy with this template, and looking forward to creating more like it.

Thanks for listening.

Ableton Push 3 Standalone - all sounds and effects and such
Many in-the-box sounds used as well, notably Tympo from Teletone Audio, which was used for the drum sounds

Recorded and performed live to a stereo channel, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

Introduction to Cherry Audio's CR-78 Drum Machine

video upload by Cherry Audio

"'I’ve had absolutely tons and tons of fun with this particular plug-in. I didn’t think I was going to enjoy it as much as I have. I’m not making it up. This is the most fun I’ve had with any plug-in I’ve ever played.'

Cherry Audio and Tim Shoebridge have again teamed up to create an extensive and entertaining video that introduces users to the classic CR-78 sounds and the new features of this tremendous virtual drum machine.

Get CR-78 today at https://cherryaudio.com/products/cr-78 for only $49!

Cherry Audio's CR-78 accurately recreates the punchy analog sounds and 34 onboard preset rhythms of the first true classic drum machine and takes it much further. We've done away with the complex beat programming, replaced it with a familiar X0X-style button-per-step interface, and added an easy-to-use song mode for pattern chaining. Unlike sample-based emulations, Cherry Audio's CR-78 uses modeled synthesis to recreate the classic tones of the original and makes a quantum leap forward by making these sounds fully editable. Four studio-quality effects are provided, with a uniquely fast and fun "send button" for each individual tone in the effects and mixer section, which also includes a complete mixer, compressor, and a six-band graphic EQ.

Cherry Audio CR 78: A demo and tutorial of a class rhythm machine
video upload by CatSynth TV

"We take a detailed look at the new CR-78 from Cherry Audio, a recreation of the legendary Roland CR-78 "CompuRhythm". With its distinctive analog drum sounds and ability to program one's own rhythms in addition to the 34 presets, the CR-78 made the jump from the top shelf of home electric organs to mainstream pop music in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and set the stage for Roland's later drum machine line. Cherry Audio's version faithfully reproduces the sounds and rhythms of the original, along with some new features to expand it's possibilities an integrate into modern digital studios.

CR-78 -- Cherry Audio's first virtual drum machine -- accurately recreates the punchy analog sounds and 34 onboard preset rhythms of the first true classic drum machine and takes it much further.

In 1978, following the success of their AceTone electronic rhythm products, Roland introduced a not-so-little box that made a massive impact. Coming from a legacy of preset-based devices intended to sit atop an organ, the CompuRhythm CR-78 was entirely new: the first programmable, microprocessor-controlled, analog beatbox.

With its colorful buttons for pattern presets, distinctive analog tones, and basic pattern programming, the CR-78 was the first drum machine as we know it. Pro musicians such as Blondie, Ultravox, Phil Collins and Genesis, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Roxy Music, The Cars, Hall and Oates, and many others immediately embraced and immortalized this revolutionary gear.

Waiting for this Moment

For years, musicians have requested a virtual drum machine such as this, and in Cherry Audio fashion, we've delivered it with so much more.

Cherry Audio's CR-78 is a visionary virtual drum machine that re-envisions the original by meticulously recreating and extending its distinctive sounds and beats with new programmability features, and adds over 250 additional presets that take it from mild to wild.

Pattern creation has been simplified with X0X-style 16- or 24-step sequencing, copy-and-paste, and real-time entry using trigger, keyboard, or MIDI device. CR-78 also includes an expansive song mode for chaining up to 99 patterns. All of the original variations for fills, accents, voice cancel, and fades are present, along with new swing and velocity options.

Cherry Audio's CR-78 can be played standalone and includes versatile plug-in options loaded with such DAW-friendly features as auto-sync, drag-and-drop MIDI export, individual outs, and complete automation.

Unlike sample-based instruments, Cherry Audio has emulated the original's tones through modeled synthesis, and a Voice Edit panel allows extensive instrument parameter editing, enabling a range of sonic and melodic possibilities far surpassing the original.

The innovative Effects/Mixer panel delivers discrete level, pan, mute/solo; studio-quality effects, including overdrive, flanger, delay, gated reverb with effects send buttons; and a master compressor and a six-band graphic EQ.

In short, Cherry Audio's CR-78 goes deep inside the box to provide the ultimate outside-of-the-box experience.

Cherry Audio and Tim Shoebridge have again teamed up to create an extensive and entertaining video that introduces users to the classic CR-78 sounds and the features of this tremendous virtual drum machine."

Doctor Mix & Anthony Check Out the PWM Mantis Synth | NAMM 2024

video upload by Anthony Marinelli Music

"Join me and my good buddy Doctor Mix as we explore one of the most talked about synthesizers at NAMM 2024. It won't be difficult to discover how much fun we're having checking it out for the first time. I can see that there is still a lot to unpack about this synth and I'm looking forward to doing just that. Please stay on the lookout and tune in to AMM for a much more in-depth look at this super fun and great sounding instrument. It's part of a special family of synthesizers that were all designed with much love. PWM Mantis is a collaboration between the late Chris Huggett (EDP Gnat, EDP Wasp, OSCar) and PWM (Paul Whittington). A hybrid-analog synthesizer, Mantis utilizes mathematically-generated oscillators with a pure analog signal path and a modernized design architecture based on the EDP Wasp with an OSCar-style filter. It is also duophonic, with two fully independent voices, and features dual multi-mode filters that can be combined in series or parallel. Fully featured, Mantis is equipped with an arpeggiator, 37-note full-size semi-weighted keyboard with aftertouch, multi-function joystick, and MIDI/USB control for easy integration with any studio or live environment.

Oberheim Inspired Analog Synth by Shear Electronics | NAMM 2024

video upload by Anthony Marinelli Music

See the Shear Electronics label at the bottom of this post for more.

"I had an inspiring and heart-warming experience meeting Jacob Brashears from Shear Electronics at NAMM 2024. Jacob, along with his mother Cheryl Brashears (a high performance systems engineer with a storied background) have together created a truly remarkable sounding discrete analog polyphonic synthesizer in the style of the Oberheim 8-voice Iconic SEM Synthesizer. It's aptly called the "Relic". In addition to achieving the classic sound and offering all the familiar routing of it's predecessor, the "Relic" delivers a new take with voltage controllable filter profiles (the ability to transition between HP, LP and BP filters for example), waveform blending, rich intermodulation distortion at fingertip control and all parameters are controllable with the highest resolution digital encoders available. Be sure to keep following and support this next generation synth company of mother and son on their journey to follow their dreams. I'm looking forward to playing their instrument(s) soon and seeing them flourish for a long time to come!

Elektron Digitone "hypha"

video upload by Benjamin Brodie

"Combining deep FM synthesis with a familiar subtractive synthesis signal flow, the Elektron Digitone is an amazingly powerful 8-voice synth. And with Elektron's acclaimed sequencing onboard, your creative potential is practically unlimited. Digitone is ready to create with four independent synth tracks, each with a 4-operator FM synth engine featuring eight different FM algorithms. Those algorithms — along with pretty much everything else — can be locked to different values for each sequence step. Factor in four MIDI tracks, an arpeggiator for each track, two LFOs per synth voice, multimode filtering, and built-in effects, and the Elektron Digitone may just be the FM synth you've always wanted to perform with.

The complex timbres and sonic animation you can create with FM synthesis make it a unique method of sound creation, and Digitone presents it in a welcoming fashion. Each of the four synth tracks features its own 4-operator FM synth engine with eight algorithms. Elektron gave Digitone a familiar subtractive synthesis-style workflow that makes tweaking these voices fun and intuitive. And with the potential to lock a different synth sound into every sequence step, Digitone offers far more sonic potential than most 8-voice synthesizers — or most FM synths in general for that matter.

The elusive song of the desert, caused by grains of sand rubbing against each other, is nature’s own FM synthesizer. Sometimes roaring, sometimes wailing, always enchanting. Enter the alluring dunes of Digitone: a compact synthesizer that fits snugly at home, in the studio, and on stage.

FM synthesis occurs when you modulate the pitch of one oscillator with another, to achieve rich and unexpected timbres. The ratio and rate of modulation impact the resulting sound. Digitone uses four oscillators, or operators, per voice. A particular configuration of operators is called an algorithm. For classical FM synthesis, it ends here.

With the Digitone, you get to shape, enrich and modulate the sound even further, using the powers of subtractive synthesis. Use the multimode filter with its custom envelope to soften or pronounce the wild overtones. Cut off the low, mid, or high frequencies. Sculpt with style and precision. Define the sound decisively using the full-featured amp envelope. Carve the contour of the sound.

You can add more movement to the sound using an LFO or two. Set any sound-shaping parameter in automated, repeated motion. At a very slow or a very fast speed, using a variety of different waveshapes, including a random one. Make your sound sway gently like the ocean, or flutter like a butterfly."

NAMM 2024 - MuSonics - Vanilla

video upload by sonicstate

"At NAMM 2024, we hooked up with Suit and Tie Guy, who introduced us to the Vanilla Synthesizer, a departure from the Eurorack modular format toward a more East Coast leaning complete instrument. Suit And Tie Guy describing it as a walnut-cabinet beauty packed with 70s goodness in American format, says the Vanilla Synthesizer promises a unique blend of vintage aesthetics and cutting-edge functionality. Boasting solid gold artwork, it features two LFOs, two VCOs, one filter, two envelope generators, two VCAs, and a mixer. Suit and Tie Guy showcased the control distributor, a device that minimizes patching by efficiently distributing CV and gate inputs to various components of the synthesizer with cable-free operation, though patching is available in the style of iconic synths like the ARP 2600. While not a limited edition, it has limited availability due to its meticulous construction process, and that each one is built to order.

Discovering the Roland SH1000: Pros, Cons & Famous Users - Dry

video upload by Andy Whitmore

"In this video, we are going to get into the fascinating world of the legendary Roland SH1000 synthesizer. Join us as we explore its extraordinary features, uncover the pros and cons, and even discover some famous users who have embraced this iconic instrument.
Throughout our exploration, we will also shed light on the concept of the SH1000’s 2 Low Frequency Oscillators (LFOs) and how they contribute to the unique sound of the SH1000.
Whether you're a seasoned musician or simply intrigued by the world of synthesizers, this video is sure to provide valuable insights and knowledge.
So, if you're ready to learn more about the history, functionality, and impact of the Roland SH1000, hit that play button and prepare to be amazed! Don't forget to like and share this video with your fellow music enthusiasts. Let's celebrate the brilliance of this timeless synthesizer together.

The SH-1000, introduced in 1973, was the first instrument produced by Roland, and probably one of the first compact affordable keyboard synthesizers in all of Japan. It was designed to complement a home organ. Above its keyboard is a wooden sheet music stand. Organ-style coloured preset selector tabs are located below the keyboard. All the extra parameter controls are located to the left of the keyboard.
The SH-1000 is a monophonic analog synth with a single oscillator feeding a lowpass filter, an ADSR envelope, and two LFOs. It features 10 Preset sounds, but they are pretty weak. Fortunately you can create your own sounds for some really great mono-synth bass, lead, percussion and FX sounds. Basic square, ramp and pulse-width waveforms are available from the oscillator and the LFOs have sine, square and sample+hold. It has a terrific ‘Growl’ and ‘Wow’ effect for a pretty scary analog sound. It also features white noise, pink noise, portamento, octave transposition and a Random Note Generator. Although there is no user memory, unique sounds can still be quickly recreated or discovered thanks to its simple interface.
It’s a dinosaur! But it’s also a classic piece of Roland history. It has been used by Vangelis, Human League, Blondie, The Band, and Jethro Tull. A little later in 1973 the SH2000 was released with more Preset sounds (up to 30) but far less flexibility, controls and features. This may have been because the SH-1000 was a little confusing to its target demographic at the time. But today’s synthesists will love the unique sound and nostalgia of Japan’s first compact synthesizer!

The audio is DIRECT, 100% DRY, & IN STEREO - You are hearing the raw audio as it comes directly from the synthesizer. NO post processing (Effects, EQ, or Dynamics) whatsoever.

Pollard Syndrum Quad - Analog Drum Synthesizer - Pro-Serviced w/Restoration

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via Analog U.S Reverb

"This one is in excellent cosmetic condition and working 100%. It has just been serviced and has had some restoration. It is ready to be used and needs nothing! It will come with all four pads and a new cable. Not sold as-is! Shipping to most countries! The shipping price is just an estimate and might be less. If it is less you will be refunded.

*** The photo listed is of another I had sold. Photos of the actual unit will be posted shortly.

Cosmetically- Nothing is ever mint in my opinion and this one is no exception. Please check out the photos. Apart from being cleaned up, the wood sides have been restored and all screws & jack nuts have been replaced. Most of the original slider caps were cracked or missing so they were replaced with ARP Odyssey style caps.

Internally- Besides any repairs, all potentiometers, switches, jacks, and xlr connectors have been cleaned, the sliders have been cleaned & re-lubed, and the power supply has been re-capped. The headphone jacks on these are extremely noisy as they are powered by a pre-amp chip with a very high gain. Because of this, it picks up a lot of cross-talk and noise. Please be aware of this!"

"Incus Iteritas Alia is available now: https://bit.ly/4b0koJW

Incus Iteritas Alia smashes big and bold sounds into your patches. Incus started as a percussion voice, and was smelted into something even wilder: create kicks for any genre, snares, and metallic hits, or go melodic and create FM plucks, analog-style basslines, and so much more. Incus uses a combination of waveshaping, saturation, wavefolding, FM, and additive synthesis, plus a slew of internal modulation, all behind easy-to-use parameters perfect for jamming.

Both FM and additive synthesis can be quite complex, but Incus uses a simple set of controls to keep things straightforward."

Press release follows:

"Los Angeles, CA — Modular synthesizer company Noise Engineering, known for their innovative Eurorack modules, has announced three additions to their Alia oscillator platform: Ataraxic Iteritas Alia, Cursus Iteritas Alia, and Incus Iteritas Alia.

In 2023, Noise Engineering released the 10HP Alia platform, marking the return of their Iteritas oscillators. Alia launched with the famed Basimilus Iteritas firmware, along with Manis Iteritas and the new Debel Iteritas, but the team promised firmwares in the near future.

Now, Noise Engineering has delivered, doubling the number of firmwares available for Alia. Cursus Iteritas Alia and Ataraxic Iteritas Alia are revamped versions of the originals, promising to sound nearly identical to the originals with improved encoder tuning, a suboscillator output, and a performable Hold button. Incus Iteritas Alia is an all-new voice based around wavemorphing additive FM, designed for percussive and melodic sound design.

Since Alia is an oscillator platform, owners of existing Alias can try out all three of the new firmwares on their modules. Firmware is 100% free and swappable at any time from the Noise Engineering Customer Portal. With six firmwares now available for the platform, the Alia is an excellent choice for those who want an incredibly diverse yet compact sound source in their system. Swappable overlays for all firmwares are also available from the Noise Engineering webshop and retailers around the world.

The new Incus Iteritas Alia is an exciting addition to the lineup, utilizing Noise Engineering’s favorite synthesis tricks and techniques to create a new voice boasting a massive range of timbres. Sounds are created with a combination of additive, wavemorphing, and FM synthesis, with three different algorithms all controlled by an internal dynamics envelope. Users familiar with the Basimilus will find that Incus has a similar workflow, and while it can synthesize the best parts of a drum kit, it’s also well-suited to bass and melodic duties.

As usual for their platforms, all of the new firmwares are available as paneled modules, so customers can choose the panel they prefer. Ataraxic Iteritas Alia, Cursus Iteritas Alia, and Incus Iteritas Alia are available now at https://noiseengineering.us and at retailers globally.

Availability and pricing:
Ataraxic Iteritas Alia, Cursus Iteritas Alia, and Incus Iteritas Alia: In stock in black and silver.
Shipping from Noise Engineering and retailers starting January 18th, 2024; MSRP US$385" [check with the dealers on the right for availability]

Annotated space garbage Great Conjunction prototype into norms pedalboard

video upload by Arman Bohn

"Chugging away at the Great Conjunction prototype. I think I have succeeded in getting over 100 parameters accessible via MIDI CC. Now I’m looking into some ESD counter measures.

In this video, I’m noodling around, playing with rhythms and making some minor adjustments to the synth engines.

Recently added a third generative sequencer style. I’ve also made a fundamental change underneath so that each of the three sequencers can be set to create sequences from any of the sequence types.

Documentation is in the works, and I feel pretty close to being able to send out some prototypes.

It has been a real struggle with hurdles and learning moments. I’m sure there will more to come.
