"This unit contains 6 TF1 modules. The serial number badge says TX216. Each of these modules contains the synth engine from the original vintage Yamaha DX7.

NOTE: the rightmost module has an intermittent problem that causes the pitch to be randomly modulated. Our tech says this is due to a defective custom Yamaha IC chip that we don't have a source for, so the rightmost module is presently glitchy - sometimes it works fine, but sometimes the pitch goes crazy.

The TF1 modules each had the following preventative work done to them to make this TX rack functionally better than others you may find (apart from the module mentioned above): Battery replaced. Reloaded factory patches to all modules (they each contain the same single set of 32 sounds). All electrolytic capacitors replaced. Properly tested post-servicing and working and sounding great!"

Build an epic dreamy soundtrack with Yamaha TX816 and Roland Jupiter-8

video upload by Espen Kraft

"The Yamaha TX816 FM module paired with a Roland Jupiter-8 in random arpeggio mode was a perfect match for my track "Dreams" as a title track for my new album, of the same name.
With 8 DX7 cards, the TX816 is a monster when it comes to stacking up FM sounds.

YAMAHA TX816 - 8 DX7 Synthesizer Modules in 1 w/ Docs & Flight Case

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"I set up these modules so that they each generally pertain to a certain kind of sound, though some modules are more varied. For instance:
Module 1 is all bass sounds, including a great Tuba sound
Module 2 is mostly pianos and clavs.
Module 3 is mostly electric pianos and bells.
Module 4 is organs and synthy organs, which a timpani thrown in for fun.
Module 5 is mostly strings, with some percussion.
Module 6 is mostly brass and some great pads
Module 7 includes woodwinds, harmonicas, vibes, and more percussion.
Module 8 includes guitars and an assorted mix of more interesting sounds.

I very selectively searched through hundreds of sounds to choose the ones I have here. I was looking for the most musically useable. I tended to stay away from very reverberant sounds, because I figured that reverb can always be added to any sound, and obviously it can be more specifically applied in that way.

Included in the sale are the rare TX816 Operating Guide, a bunch of vintage literature, and a print-out of the names of the sounds in every module, which will help you to see how they're organized. Each column represents a different module: 1 thru 8 – a treasure chest of great sounds. Lastly, as you will see in the photos, the winner will also receive paper copies of hundreds of more charted out DX7 sounds."

600 Voices for the DX7 Patchbook

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"A vintage (1987) book titled '600 Voices for the DX7'. Cover reads 'Add new dimension to your DX and TX instruments. comprehensive voice charts make it easy to program and use exciting new sounds. All voices in this book are compatible with the Yamaha DX7, DX5, TX7, TX816, TX216, TFI, and the DXI'."

Yamaha TX816 DEMO (All 8 Modules In Unison - Part I)

video upload by Blake Foster

"Check out my music: https://cbfosterfunkhouser.bandcamp.com/

The Tx816 is slowly becoming one of my favorites in my collection. It's a rack of 8 Dx7s in a 4 u rack. While it's a pain to integrate into a studio because of the lack of a main output, one needs a dedicated mixer and a 8 channel XLR snake for it to function properly, also don't forget that each module has its own battery so buying a used one is most likely to have dead batteries. Once all that fun stuff is finished, the result is very rewarding! 8 DX7 modules playing in unison is something you'd have to hear in person. Each voice is slightly detuned and each patch uses all 8 TF1 modules. I also realized there are very few TX816 demos on youtube so I thought I'd make one for everyone to see. Some people complain there's a lot of noise with these but I honestly don't see it unless you crank the gain. I beam the sounds from my DX7ii onto the TX module, it's a lot easier plus you can edit from the DX. I highly recommend this synth if you can get a good deal on one. They used to cost 5k in 1984! Enjoy. Also there's a bit of reverb from the Strymon Big Sky, Most of the "reverb" is actually just me sustaining the notes."

Yamaha TX816 DEMO (All 8 Modules In Unison - Part II - E-Pianos & 80's Pads)

video upload by Blake Foster

"Here's a Part II video demonstrating some custom patches I made for the DX7/TX816...all modules playing in unison and detuned/panned on the mixer. This video demonstrates some E-pianos and pad sounds...No effects were used in this video. Controlling the synth with a Yamaha KX88 Midi keyboard."

Patch List
"OPENMINDED"- plucky/Evolving pad
"JUSTAPHASE"- electric piano with a slight phaser-esque effect
"SQUAREGLIDE"- Quirky square-lead sound
"ELEKTRICITY"- Lead/brassy sound
"TINE DELAY" - E-piano with reverse delay sound
"REFLECTIONS" - Brassy piano sound with reverse delay sound
"4VOICE" - Etherial pad sound
"OBIESIXPAD" - Lush, warbley pad sound
"BLESSEDRAINS" - soft brass sound (you know what it is)

Yamaha TX816 w/ Knobs

Yamaha TX816 FM Synthesizer Fully Loaded with 8 TF1 Midi Rack Modules SN 1512

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The TX816 is a monster of DX and FM digital synthesis. It is a unique system in that it is a rack unit that could take up to eight TF1 modules. A TF1 module is basically a DX7 condensed down to a single circuit board with almost no front panel controls. Definitely designed for use with external hardware and software controllers the TX816 allows you to easily carry around up to eight DX7s! Software such as MOTU Unisyn, Emagic SounDiver, or even another DX7 can be used to program the sounds in each module via MIDI.

Each TF1 module consists of a 16-voice, 6-operator digital FM synth engine. So a complete TX816 with all eight TF1 modules would offer up to 128 voices and 48 operators! Each TF1 also features an independent audio out (XLR) and MIDI I/O for a total of eight audio outputs and MIDI I/O's. It also has one global MIDI in/out port with 8-part multitimbrality, but no common stereo or mix output.

The TX816 was designed for demanding live use where portability, polyphony, and lots of outputs are a must! The TX816 is fully compatible with all other DX synthesizers including Native Instruments FM7 software-based plug-in. You can use the TX816 like it's eight separate DX7s or mix and pan each module together to layer your sounds into one monstrous DX powerhouse! It has been used by Kitaro, Chick Corea, Michael Jackson, Europe, and Scritti Politti.

In the early eighties these sold for anywhere between $2,000 to $5,000 depending on how many TF1 modules were installed (from two to eight typically)."

"It's loud! It's brash! It's digital! It's the edgy sound of Yamaha's 6-op FM synths, now perfectly emulated by chipsynth OPS7 in a convenient plugin format!

Let it take over your tracks as it took over the airwaves with a storm in 1983. Open the flood gates to a deluge of crisp bass sounds, crystalline bells, soothing electric pianos, and sharp rhythmic clavichords.

You will unleash vast FM landscapes in mere seconds, thanks to the dual-layer system seen only in the most expensive FM keyboards - the Yamaha DX1 and DX5 - giving your music a big, full, lush studio sound!

In addition to a full set of effects, we've given chipsynth OPS7 a game-changing dynamic patch editing system, making FM patch creation easier than ever and removing any need for cumbersome algorithm diagrams.

But perhaps you want to load-in one of the thousands of available original Yamaha DX series 6-op patch banks instead?

We've got you covered, with full SysEx bank file support and full hardware SysEx interfacing.

CHIPSYNTH OPS7
In terms of emulation, Plogue goes all-in: by exactly matching the digitally captured output of the original EGS and OPS chips, we've recreated every nugget of sound from the original keyboard.

This includes exact envelope stepping patterns that vary note-to-note, every facet of the convoluted pitch calculation, and absolutely identical operator math for each algorithm down to the bit.

The analog side of the original keyboards and modules is also recreated with lavish attention to detail: you want the unique crunchiness of the original DAC?

We got it down to its insane compander and the full analog filtering section.

Guaranteed 100% free of any samples!"
