Introducing the Nodular Desktop Synthesizer - Two Sided Analog Monophonic Semi-Modular Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Update: the maker/brand name for this synth is ndlr.synths. I created a new channel label for them. We have a new synthesizer manufacturer in town.  See second "Update" at the bottom of this post for additional notes on the design.

via the auction:
"Up for sale: one monophonic analog synthesizer. I've been making analog synthesizers for about 15 years now, but this is the first I am offering up for sale to the 'general public'. I am hoping to make a business out of selling this particular model, and you could be my very first customer.

The pictures show the same unit that is up for sale. The cabinet is made from 3/4" natural cherry boards, except for the base, which is made of 3/4" MDF. Both instrument panels are made of 1/8" thick anodized aluminum. The panels have been mechanically engraved and the engravings filled with chemically hardened black enamel paint. The whole unit measures about 18" wide by 18" deep by 12" tall. It weighs about 40 pounds. This is a very well made unit, with sturdy instrument panels that'll last a lifetime.

This synthesizer has its own +15/+10/GND/-10/-15 volt power supply and will only run on 120VAC 60Hz. It consumes about 45 watts of power at full bore.

All the modules in this synthesizer have been designed to work together seamlessly, and all use the same standards: 1 volt per octave, 10 volt peak-to-peak signal voltages, and 5 volt peak-to-peak gate, trigger, and control voltages. All patches are made among the modules via banana jacks. And a few different ways of interfacing to external modules or instruments are offered via 1/4" phone jacks.

A description of the different modules follows:

(1) ring modulator

(1) white and pink noise and random voltage source

(1) sample/track & hold

(1) voltage comparator

(2) low frequency oscillators (LFOs):

(1) headphone amplifier

Both offer voltage controlled frequency, variable offset and symmetry, and sinusoidal, triangular, and pulse wave outputs. By adjusting the speed knob, the frequency can be changed from about 20Hz down to really, really, slow. This range can be extended through voltage control.

(3) voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs):

All three offer 1 volt per octave frequency control, voltage controlled pulse width modulation, ac-coupled linear frequency control, hard sync, and sine, triangle, sawtooth, and pulse wave outputs. They'll track to within .2% over at least 8 octaves with basically negligible temperature drift once the enclosure is warmed up. And they'll operate from below audio to above audio frequencies.

In addition, the first VCO offers a frequency range switch and fine tuning.

Prophet X Boasts New OS and Robust Third-Party Support

via Sequential

San Francisco, CA—Feb 13, 2020 — Sequential today announced several developments that have enhanced their flagship hybrid samples+synthesis keyboard, the Prophet X. These include a new OS, two full-featured third-party sample editing applications, and several add-on sample libraries from 8Dio and other sound developers.

The new 2.2 OS adds several user-requested features including 24 additional User Sample Groups, support for crossfades on forward-backward loops, and the capability to modulate between tempo-synced LFO values. The new features build on an already-powerful foundation of sound shaping tools and the fusion of samples and synthesis. The new OS is designed for both the Prophet X and Prophet XL and can be downloaded from the Prophet X/ XL support page on Sequential’s website.

Another significant development for the synthesizer, which supports up to 50 GB of user-created sample content, is the availability of two powerful third-party sample creation/editing tools. The first, PXToolkit, is a free application from developer ThinkerSnacks which offers drag and drop file creation with automatic extraction of pitch and loop metadata from .WAV files, as well as support for multi-sampled instruments, multiple velocity layers per key, and round-robin sample selection and playback. The software can be downloaded free of charge from the ThinkerSnack website.

The second tool, SAMPLEROBOT Pro 6.5 from Skylife, brings Prophet X support to their popular and highly-acclaimed auto-sampling and sample editing application. It supports multi-sampled instruments, multiple velocity layers per key and powerful looping and editing tools. The software is available for purchase from Skylife’s website.

Also noteworthy is the abundance of third-party add-on sample packs that can be imported into the Prophet X and manipulated as part of its hybid sound engine. The most prolific among the various sound developers creating content for the synthesizer is 8Dio, with eight Prophet X-specific products to date. These include deep-sampled versions of vintage instruments such as the Yamaha CP70, ARP 2600, Oberheim OB-X, Sequential Prophet-5 and T-8, Roland Jupiter 4, and Moog Prodigy and Minimoog Model D synths.

Add-On packs from other developers include:
- Replicants from Modulatable Synthesis (samples of the Deckard’s Dream poly synth)
- The 9000 Foot Piano from Pianobook (samples of a renowned Yamaha grand piano)
- BlueWave from Goldbaby (samples of the PPG Wave 2.2)
- VCO Pack from ThinkerSnacks VCO samples from the Neutron, OB-6, Dreadbox Erebus, and Moog Voyager)

“We’re excited about the support that the Prophet X is getting from third-party developers. Clearly they feel, as we do, that it’s a hugely powerful synth with incredible potential,” commented Dave Smith. “Having access to these new editing tools and add-on sample packs makes an already-awesome musical tool even more versatile. ”

The Prophet X has garnered critical acclaim for its sonic versatility and sound design capabilities through its substantial internal library of 150 GB of sample content as well as its ability to import up to 50 GB of additional user samples and add-on content from sound developers.

All sample content can be manipulated by the Prophet X sound engine, which powers two simultaneous sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators, with a full complement of traditional synthesis tools, all processed through analog filters. Dual digital effects and a 64-step polyphonic sequencer round out the package. In standard performance mode, the instrument provides bi-timbral, 8-voice stereo, or 16-voice mono operation. Thirty-two-voice performance mode allows paraphonic filter operation when using a single sampled instrument and oscillator.

ARP 2600P with 3604P Keyboard

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Freshly serviced & calibrated by top UK tech, this portable two-piece ARP 2600 system works 100%. You will know all about this "benchmark" instrument, made between 1971-1980 in Mass/USA. Its a rev.3 model. Check it out on YouTube....The 3604P keyboard (s/n 361128) connects to the 2600P module (s/n 261011) with multi-pin cable. It runs at 220Vac (mains cord supplied). There are some patch sheets/leads supplied.

THREE VCOs~noise generator~sample & hold~ring modulator~great filters~glide~spring reverb~twin internal speakers:- this is a comprehensive mono synth...

"any sound can be created..." (advertising blurb by ARP)..the voice of R2D2, for example..... ARP 2600 has been on countless recordings, used by numerous musos & producers......being a bit more portable than the 2500 system did help! Having 3 tuneable oscillators means any note can play a 3-part chord, if desired.....

Condition. "Very good"....should be excellent, but the tolex on the casings is a bit scuffed, new clasps have replaced some broken ones. We intend to leave "as is" for "patina & provenance" reasons....re-tolexing is possible, but would involve dismemberment of the module. We prefer to not risk any damage.......hey, it LOOKS 45-ish years old.....and looks cool, anyway......."

ARP Solus Analog Monophonic Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Solus is a wonderful vintage analog synthesizer from ARP. The voice is very similar to the famous odyssey with two VCOs, LFO, and low pass filter. A few sections are stripped down a bit to keep a smaller footprint and faster user interface. Oscillator waves and oscillators are mixed with cross faders and there is only a single ADSR shared for the filter and VCA. It sits somewhere in the middle of the Odyssey and Axxe.

The neat part of the Solus is that like a 2600, the whole synth is a case for itself. The lid is included and has clearly served its purpose well over the years. Finally, like the odyssey, there is CV, gate and trig I/O on 1/8th" jacks for interfacing with other analog gear (even works with Eurorack!)

This is a beautiful vintage analog synthesizer with that classic bright sound that ARP is so well known for! It was recently checked out by our technician and is in fantastic condition."

Analog Oscillator Comparison

YouTube via AutomaticGainsay

"It is often stated that all oscillators sound alike, and that it is really difficult to discern one oscillator from another, be them analog or digital. I have received a lot of flack regarding my statement that the triangle wave on the Minimoog is special.

So, as a result, I thought it might be interesting to take three of the most popular analog synthesizers and put their oscillators (and filters) to the test.

And you! Can you tell which is which?

The first part of the video demonstrates the waveforms of each synth without naming them. See if you can guess.

Moog Minimoog
ARP 2600
Korg MS-20

State your findings in the comments!"

ARP Little Brother Oscillator/LFO module

via this auction

"Vintage deep bass controlled by 1/8" CV jacks like Blacet/PAIA/Doepfer or your ARP Odyssey/2600. Comes with custom hard shell flight case!... it's an oscillator with four footages and four waveforms which also comes with a basic LFO for pitch modulation. The lower footages sound like the bass part from an ARP Omni, it has that rich solid feel to it. I have a number of FRAC style oscillators and none sound as good as this one. I've used it with ARP Odysseys but the real fun has been with my Blacet gear, it hooks up perfectly and the LFO out is a bonus. Gate/trigger/CV ins/outs, audio in/out, LFO voltage out. 1/8" jacks volt/octave."
