XAOC Leibniz Binary Subsystem

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"In episode 1 [posted here], it was fun to dive in. Then I found out that the system isn't just a matter of putting all modules in a case, wiring up the I/O on the back and get to work. It's modular (duh) so it's more a matter of recipes where the order of modules isn't fixed. Having all modules in a case doesn't exactly help to understand them either, there's just too many variables and it's extremely easy to make a wrong connection with the 'pale pink stripe' down or up on the LBZ ribbon cables. You really need to double check and then again. XAOC, make them red. Please.

In this episode I tried to get the Rostock module to work. It's a bucket brigade 'delay' with 64 memory locations. Or a shift register. Anyway, it allows you to accumulate values from the bus and store them so you can loop it. However, with a clock running at 2 mHz you don't hear 64 bytes when millions come by. If it's even audible it's in the nanosecond range. I had to slow down to actually see the module work.

XAOC has provided cool patch examples in the manual and I focused on delaying/looping rhythms with Rostock, Lipsk (bit inverter) and Poczdam (router/binary output). I am also using Odessa in the video, which is a truly amazing VCO which also has a Leibniz header on the back to control partials with bitmaps. I absolutely LOVE this system and can't wait to get started on episode 03."

XAOC Leibniz Binary Subsystem | Episode 01 | Intro & Drezno II

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"My first ignorant impression was 'it's a fancy bitcrusher' which may be 10% right. It's about musical applications with binary logic. Thanks to Bries and Tom Churchil for their masterclasses so I may be able to figure out the other 90%.

As always, I am not sponsored by XAOC. I wish, but it's too late now. I have Lipsk in backorder and that will probably conclude my case.

Dear XAOC if you feel thankful while this series progresses, I still have a short wishlist like Odessa, Batumi, Samara, Belgrad and a mixer. But I am already happy you made these modules!"

Xaoc Devices Odessa: full guide and fresh patch ideas using additive synthesis

video upload by Tom Churchill

"Odessa, by Xaoc Devices, is one of my favourite modular sound sources. At the time of recording, it’s been available for well over three years, but as far as I can see it’s still pretty much the only Eurorack voice of its type - a one-knob-per-function, five-voice paraphonic, digital additive oscillator - and I think it’s often still a bit misunderstood.

So I thought now might be a good time to take a fresh look at Odessa and see how it stacks up in 2023. If you’re an owner who hasn’t used it for a while, I hope it inspires you to dig in again, and either way, I hope you just enjoy some of the sounds and maybe learn a bit about additive synthesis in the process.

Note: I’ve done a few videos in collaboration with Xaoc Devices recently, but this isn’t one of them. I bought Odessa with my own hard-earned cash last year, so it’s not sponsored - I’m making this purely as a fanboy and I have no other agenda.

"::| TO HEAR THE FULL RANGE OF FREQUENCIES AND STEREO EFFECTS, A GOOD PAIR OF HEADPHONES IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED |::

Further explorations with the Verbos Electronics Scan & Pan mixer and the XAOC Devices Timiszoara, Odessa, Batumi, and Zadar. The Scan & Pan is turning out to be a pretty amazing module as it Scans through the three channels featuring the Odessa's Odd, Even, and Fundamental outputs (and Pans channel three which is Odessa's Fundamental.) Couple that with the Timiszoara for effects and the modulation on the Odessa, makes for some really interesting sound!. Sequencing provided by the Intellijel Metropolix. Modulation from Batumi and Zadar which is also providing the Envelopes for Channel 1 and 2 of the Verbos."

Xaoc Devices Minsk & Zagrzeb Eurorack Modules

SUPERBOOTH video here

Press release:

Xaoc Devices Zagrzeb & Mińsk – two faces of stereo processing

Are you ready for some stereo action? Xaoc Devices continues exploring the stereo processing realm with two new modules unveiled at this year’s Superbooth.

Zagrzeb is a stereo multimode 4-pole (24dB/oct) state variable voltage-controlled filter (SV VCF). It offers five distinct frequency responses, three of which are available simultaneously. Spread control allows for animation of the stereo image by moving the left and right filter cutoff frequencies in opposite directions. Zagrzeb is designed to sound smooth and clean unless it is overdriven with a hot signal— however, it does not lack character! We believe it will be appreciated by fans of old Japanese synthesizers, but bear in mind that Zagrzeb is not a clone of any existing design. The four-pole state variable structure is a new development and offers unique sonic characteristics. While Zagrzeb is designed for filtering stereo signals (e.g. samples or stereo oscillators like Xaoc Devices Odessa), it can easily handle mono signals and is capable of creating a faux stereo pair thanks to a special phase shifting network at the input.

– Stereo, four-pole state variable filter
– Five frequency responses, three available simultaneously
– 24dB/oct low pass and 24dB/oct high pass filtering
– 3 band pass filter slope configurations
– Voltage controlled Spread control for animating the stereo image
– No LF drop at high resonance
– Mono to stereo image effect
– 8hp, skiff friendly
– Current draw: +70mA/–60mA
– Reverse power protection

Mińsk is a stereo image processor. It is a hybrid tool that combines digital and analog processing to facilitate advanced mid/side (M/S) manipulation of a stereo signal pair. It allows for separate treatment of the mid and side components, which affects the depth and width of the auditory scene. Mińsk offers both manual and voltage control of the stereo width, as well as two dimension effects for enhancing the existing stereo image or creating a faux stereo image based on the stereo or mono input source. Mińsk is especially handy during the preparation of a vinyl release or before a club concert, because it can eliminate out-of-phase low-end frequencies (high pass filter at 300Hz with the filter slope 12dB/oct, 50Hz with the filter slope 24dB/oct).

– Stereo image manipulation tool
– Mid/Side processing
– Mono to faux stereo conversion
– Stereo dimension enhancement
– Manual and CV stereo width control
– Low cut on side component
– Visual stereo image indicator
– 6hp, skiff friendly
– Current draw: +140mA/–40mA
– Reverse power protection

Zagrzeb: 260 EUR MSRP, available in October 2021
Mińsk: 190 EUR MSRP, available in October 2021

Playlist for the above:

1. Xaoc Devices Odessa, Batumi, Belgrad
This video showcases a selection of Xaoc Devices modules. We have the Odessa additive oscillator as the only sound sound source with it's different outputs being individually processed through the Endorphines Milky Way, Xaoc Belgrad and the Intellijel Multi FX 1U. The sequence is generated by the Tirana II and one channel of the Batumi being mixed and fed into an Intellijel Duatt to Intellijel Scales for Quantization. The remaining channels of the Batumi add some subtle modulations here and there. The Fundamental output of the Odessa is running through a seperate channel with it's own envelope control to add more variation to the sequence.

Modules Used
Xaoc Devices : Odessa, Batumi, Belgrad, Tirana II, Tallin
Intellijel : Dual ADSR, Scales, Duatt 1U, Muti-FX 1U
Mutable Instruments : Tides, Kinks, Links
Steady State Fate : Muton
Endorphin.es : Milky Way

2. 4MS Spherical Wavetable Navigator with 4MS Dual Looping Delay
In this video we have a selection of 4MS modules; the Spherical Wavetable Navigator (SWN) running into the Dual Looping Delay and finally into the Listen 4. The Spherical Wavetable Navigator is a really deep and interesting sound source. You have full control over 6 internal wavetable oscillators that each have a 1V/oct input. Each of the 6 can be independently shaped and sculpted in real time for ultimate improvisation. The outputs of the SWN are being fed into the Dual Looping Delay to keep things rolling nicely. The dual, syncopated melodic sequence is provided by the Korg SQ1.

3. Xaoc, ALM, Instruo, Intellijel, Mutable Instruments Dub
Here we have a dark, slow dubbed out jam using the Mutable Instruments Tides being filtered by the Instruo I-o47 to create a polyphonic chord pattern. The Xaoc Devices Odessa, filtered by Belgrad, adds an eerie evolving atmosphere over the top.
The sequence is derived from the Xaoc Devices Tirana II and Batumi mixed in the Mutable Links middle section with the "min" output being fed into an Intellijel Duatt then Scales for quantizing. The Duatt is essential here for keeping the sequence CV within a specific range so we don't have a wide swing in of voltages being fed into the quantizer.
The drums are all from the ALM Squid Salmple being sequenced by the Intellijel Steppy. The Squid is running into the Endorphines Squark Dirty to Me filter to give a little more character. FX on other parts of the patch are from Endorphines Milky Way and Intellijel Multi FX 1U.

FIVE MINUTES WITH - XAOC Devices Odessa

Published on Feb 28, 2020 sonicstate

"XAOC Devices Odessa is a - wait for it - Variable Spectrum Harmonic Cluster Oscillator. An interesting FPGA based module. Edd takes us on a 5 Minute journey through it's sonic landscape.

It uses the principle of additive synthesis controlled by a set of carefully tailored macro parameters to harness thousands of sinusoidal partials that altogether form the resulting sound. The series of harmonics can be squeezed or spread apart, tilted, and pruned by a comb-like frequency response, resulting in a variety of unearthly sounds. Furthermore the VCO provides Through-zero linear FM and detuneable clusters of up to five voices."

#Jamuary2020 Day 6: Shine on crazy Diamond (free interpretation with MicroFreak)

Published on Jan 5, 2020 VolcaNiced

See the Synthuary label for more. Synthuary because these are the Jamuary synth videos. More below.

"I love this Song.

I remember myself walking thru a park in my hometown Frankfurt years ago and found some Vinyl Records in a bush. One of this vinyls was "Animals" in Pink and "Wish you where here". I was 19 and had no clue what the hack Pink Floyd is. So I put the record on the player and then I was .... infected. Man, that moment first time hearing their music wihtout knowing who they are was unbelievable.

So in tribut to that great moment I am playing some leads from this great Song "Shine on crazy Diamond". Thanks @Waveformer for your influence on this with his video here: https://youtu.be/1OAETuz_8uM

Unfortunately I didnt own the Monologue so I had to build this Lead patch with the Microfreak. This took me about 2 hrs to get this. And it is still not perfect.

The backround sound comes from the Ipad and the App #DigitalD1 from @AudioKit. One of the best apps I own on the Ipad by the way. I build this sound with the PCM Moduls "Epic Pad" and "Glory Organ" and a little bit of tuning.

Enjoy the short trip into the 70th and dont be to sensitive with the mistakes I did. It's #Jamuary2020. Let's do music."
