Dive into the enthralling world of synthesizers and witness O Z Hall's outstanding entry, "Zebra Synth", in the Synthesizers.com Composition Contest. Crafted with unparalleled precision and technique, this remarkable composition combines an array of captivating sounds that will take you on a breathtaking sonic journey.

Hall masterfully utilizes three distinctive patches in "Zebra Synth" to create an immersive soundscape. The first patch features a drone made using a Q106A oscillator, which is meticulously processed by a wave folder. Another oscillator, intertwined with linear FM from the wavefolder output, results in a fascinating "clang tone" that is beautifully amplified by a digital reverb.

In the second patch, a sequenced voice is artfully produced by employing two re-paneled Q106 oscillators. One output is channeled into the input of the linear FM, which subsequently provides intriguing timbral variations. The Q119A sequencer's 3rd row masterfully controls a Ratchet effect, adding even further depth to the composition. An expertly-applied digital delay effect enriches the output of this patch.

Lastly, the lead voice is ingeniously designed using the Q169 Dual Oscillator with Pulse Width modulation. O Z Hall skillfully manipulates the 24db/oct low pass filter in real-time to deliver an electrifying performance. The extended digital delay effect ties the entire sonic experience together.
O Z Hall's "Zebra Synth" draws its arsenal of modular synthesis tools from the Synthesizers.com catalog, including Q106, Q106A, Q119A, Q171, Q148, Q127, Q169, Q168, Q167, Q114, Q174, and Q175A modules. The creative process has been meticulously executed, showcasing how these modules can be combined to engineer a rich and dynamic sound adventure.

GRP Synthesizer - A2

Let's listen to the GRP Synthesizer A2 - a very versatile analog monosynth with a high-quality sound and a huge number of modulation possibilities - and this is no exaggeration: The frequency of the two oscillators and the filter cutoff each can be influenced by one of 11 different modulation signals.

The two oscillators feature 5 waveforms each, the first VCO offers additional PWM at two waveforms, the second VCO a parameter called "Shape" which fades in nine copies of the selected waveform for super-saw and super-triangle sounds. You get a Ring Mod, Noise, Sample & Hold, two LFOs, arpeggiator and more.

The filter design has a lot of character and is capable of producing formant/vocal-like sounds and a liquid sounding resonance. The great sounding distortion parameter offers many more options for designing sounds.

With its MIDI and CV/Gate inputs this is a synthesizer that fits in all studio or live-environments. It has a good size for jamming and a quality feel - and last but not least, the A2 is proving very popular among our staff - so maybe that means something.

"A little great analog synthesizer with all the Grp heritage of sound and capabilities. Wide 8 vertical space in 5U format or, if you prefer, optionally rack mountable, with a wooden sided dedicated cabinet, the Grp A2 Analog Synthesizer has MIDI In and Analog CV/Gate connections. It offers two big oscillators with the classic analog waveforms , from Grp, Plus Super Saw and Super Triangle; the great 12dB/Oct ; Grp State Variable Filter, one Ring Modulator (have you ever tried to ring modulate a 9-components Super Saw?), One Noise Generator, one Amplifier, one Master Out section with a couple of gorgeous analog Vumeters. Elektron Digitakt + CXM1978 + GRP A2 // Ambient lofi beat

"As an old meme once said: 'I don't always pull out the Digitakt. But when I do, I always end up amazed by how simple and yet versatile it is.'

Having 2 LFO's per track, modulating modulation, quickest sampling EVER (even for a lazy ass player like me), MIDI tracks to be able to quickly play external instruments!

This all started with the loop I put in track 8, a little arpeggio on the Matriarch, that I listened to for many many hours without knowing what to do with it. Then I decided to stop being lazy, so I pulled out the Digitakt and I started flipping the sample, recorded one drone note with the GRP, recorded water, recorded birds, and even some vinyl scratching because... you know, that's the way these things go down.

In the past few days, I've had trouble sleeping, and I have to admit I resorted to my own video quite a bit, mixed with some other sounds of nature.

Everything sounded beautiful already without reverb, but then I remembered I OWN A F***ING Chase Bliss CXM1978! I attached that, I turned the CREAMY factor on the GRP to 11, and... here we are: MY FIRST AMBIENT JAM EVER!"

GRP A2 + OTO Bim & Bam // My new favorite MONO SYNTH

"So I stumbled upon a GRP A2 the other day, and I already love it.

There is something cute in its 5U enclosure, like a baby modular, as the OTO are definitely cute with their boxy, a bit cryptic, design.

I wanted to record a jam that could highlight some of the most prominent features of both the synth and the pedals. We have an arpeggio, very classical, almost Bach-sounding, going into a classical delay and a short reverb, then we get to a lush, water-like, filter playing, supported by a long and frozen reverb and a way more strong, hazy delay. In the end, the jam gets modern, with no delay, a very short reverb, just to give more air, more space to a powerful jumping sequence with some gnarly filter action.

Both the GRP A2 and the OTO are a pleasure for the dawless jammer, with all you need in plain sight. The only thing missing is a proper sequencer (GRP sells one too, the R24, but it costs almost twice the A2 synth, so...), but I have my handy Synthstrom Deluge always ready for that! Enjoy ✨"

"IMHO, this is the best bits of the larger A4 with some changes to the oscillators to give them a better, less static sounding core. I always felt the A4 oscillators were a bit stiff and lifeless whereas the A2 oscillators sing and bounce more. The oscillators have a lot of Frequency Modulation (FM) sources and you can put Oscillator 2 in drone mode (disconnected from the pitch/MIDI info) and then modulate it to create some other-worldly soundscapes.

Add in the awesome State Variable Filter with overdrive/distortion, LFOs, envelopes, and Arpeggiator and you have a machine that gives you a lot of possibilities.

The main/filter envelope can loop and the second envelope can be set to Hold, which opens it up for drones or when you're doing initial tuning.

The Ring Mod and Sample and Hold sections are a nice addition and of course you can use MIDI or cv/gate to control it.

Plus, who doesn't love watching a pair of lighted VU meters dancing around to the music?

If you're looking for a beefy monosynth with some surprises, the A2 is worth checking out."

New GRP V22 VOCODER Revealed

A front panel drawing first went up here. We now have an image of the actual unit, and some details on the new GRP V22 VOCODER:

"After a sneak preview in Florence at Meff, we are working hard to be ready for the official presentation of the V22 at Superbooth 2019 in Berlin. Before Superbooth, another preview in Rome May 4th at Synth Day & Night with Mr. Enrico Cosimi.

A 22 band full analog design vocoder, with analysis and synthesis section full analog (20 BP, 1 LP and 1 HP analysis filters), a dedicated High Pass Filter on Main Output, everything hosted in an indipendent cabinet with wooden panels with a also an optional 'Tolex' version, these are the main technical features of the Grp Vocoder V22.

The preorder for the Grp Vocoder V22 is planned in June 2019; we are not able currently to estimate the price of the Vocoder, but as soon as the second prototype will be finished we will publish an updated pricelist.

GRP A2 Analog Synthesizer

"The GRP A2 has two thick analog VCOs and a state variable VCF. The A2 has tons of routing and modulation options all available on rotary switches and a ring modulator as well as a VCLFO and regular LFO as well as two envelopes that are each unique.

There are CV as well as midi control inputs and an arpeggiator built in. The glowing VU meters let you monitor the output which although it is a monophonic synth, different filter outputs can be output at once.

In the first part of the video we used the Elektron Model:Samples for drums and sequencing of the A2.
