TipTop Audio ART Octopus, ATX1 and Vortex, MI Ripples, Warp, Torso T-1 and Teenage Engineering TX-6

video upload by Luca Longobardi

"A simple sequence as an exercise to become familiar with the new TipTop ART modules.
The most immediate thing I can tell you is that pressing a simple button to easily have the 3 oscillators perfectly tuned was a great feeling.
The three voices (2 ATX1 ART Analog VCOs and 1 Vortex ART Wavetable VCO) are controlled by the Torso T-1 via Midi through the Octopus (USB/Midi to Art Interface+Voices Manager), Ripples as filter on all three voices and delay by the Warps (alternative firmware). Reverb and mono-to-stereo magic from the TX-6."

Yamaha DX-1 Digital FM Polyphonic Synthesizer

via this auction

"Servicing Status: KSR have carried out a health-check on this DX-1in June 2023.

Remarks: A good all original condition Yamaha DX-1, which we have previously sold to the current owner but they are now Brokering it back through us for re-sale.

What is there to say on this 1983 flagship synthesizer that has not already been written, but it’s a very rare machine with only 140 reported to have ever been manufactured, so a really unique find in 2023.

Cosmetic Condition:

The overall condition of this example is very good, with the normal amount of wear we would expect to see on a synth this age, size and quality. We sold this DX-1 to our EU customer, so it was shipped out of the UK against the original sale and then was re-imported in May this year, having been sent straight to Kent Spong at KSR for some servicing, where the instrument currently resides.

The photos below were taken at KSR, so are un-doctored and show the overall presentation.

Operational Condition:

The following declaration is made in good faith and is an honest account of the current operational condition of this example.

All the controls, LEDs, functions of the control panel work as they should, so LED buttons are all operational. However, Bank A Voice 5 button feels slightly different to operate than the others which suggests the component is faulty, but it does function, although it can be intermittent. We are not aware of a replacement for this part as it would appear to be a DX-1 specific component but we are declaring this as a known issue.

The LDC display is fully working with all segments showing properly and brightness is perfectly readable. The volume LED indicator on the right hand side, next to where to says ‘DX-1 ’ on the front panel has one of the tiny LED segments that is dimmer than all the rest (the 14db) and one that does not work (the 96 db) - I’ve attached a photo I took when we had it set up in the workshop .

The sliders top the right of the instrument all work correctly.

The modulation and pitch-wheel both operate correctly.

The DX- sound engine itself operates correctly. There are some classic ‘DX’ patches loaded in the system, we did try to edit some sounds and all the edit functions were available are working, although we didn’t save those changes.

The professional weighted 73 note wood keyboard was fully working in terms of triggering notes, and the velocity was 100% working across all keys.

The Polyphonic After-Touch (Poly-AT) is not operating at more than 30% of the keyboard, although the DX-1 still received and operates Poly-AT via MIDI. Kent has gone though each key to check the after-touch sensors and there are many that simply are not working. Kent at KSR does not currently have any supply for replacements, so this is not something Kent has a resolution for, but the owner is aware and this is factored into the sale price.

In consulting with Kent at KSR on the reality on getting the Poly-AT system fully restored, as I know this would be of interest to any potential buyer, Kent told me that every DX-1 he had seen had similar issues as there are no replacement parts for the Poly-AT sensors at present. He said that in the last 6 years he had serviced two DX-1 owned by MI professionals, and both those machines also had significant Poly-AT sensor failures, so it would seem to be consistent with the age of these machines. I personally would be very suspicious of anyone selling a DX-1 stating that the Poly-AT system was 100% based on this reality."

ALAN R. PEARLMAN FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES NEW BOARD MEMBERS

Press release follows:

The ARP Foundation Strengthens its Mission

Kingston, NY, AUGUST 31, 2023– The Alan R. Pearlman Foundation has welcomed three new appointees to its Board of Directors: Chris Meyer, Collin Russell, and Andrew Schlesinger.

Chris Meyer
As a teenager in the 70s, Chris Meyer took lessons on piano, bass, and modular synthesizers. He went on to write code and help design products for Sequential Circuits, Digidesign, Tom Oberheim, and Roland R&D where he was chief engineer. He is perhaps best known as the creator of Vector Synthesis. >

Chris also taught synthesis at UCLA Extension, wrote numerous articles for Music Technology Magazine plus a column for Keyboard Magazine, and was technical chairman of the MIDI Manufacturers Association where he authored several additions to the spec including MIDI Time Code.

After a two-decade detour in the video and film industry, he recently returned to modular synthesis, creating videos, courses, and articles under the name Learning Modular, and co-authored the popular book Patch & Tweak. Proving that one who teaches can also “do”, most recently he has been focusing on composing and performing sweeping, emotional electronic music under the name Alias Zone which combines synthesizers, samplers, field recordings, and percussion instruments.

Collin Russell

Collin Russell is a composer, sound designer, and educator specializing in modular synthesis and through-composed electronic music. In addition to creating sound libraries and scoring music for films, Collin releases his own personal music in genres ranging from ambient to harsh noise. His process is rooted in the melding of traditional harmonic and rhythmic structures with organic modulations, bridging the gap between familiar and explorative sound.

Synth Gems 1 and Inspire the Music – 50 Years of Roland History.

Andrew Schlesinger

Drew Schlesinger is a renowned professional sound designer who has been involved in creating patches for synthesizers, effects and software products beginning with the Casio CZ-101 in 1984. He’s developed internal presets for over two hundred devices from thirty different manufacturers including Roland, Korg, EMU, Kurzweil, Alesis, Sony, Yamaha, Eventide, Lexicon and Sound Toys among many others.

He's recognized as one of the most prolific and accomplished sound programmers in the MI industry and has created seminal sounds and effects that include “Crystal Echoes” (Shimmer), the “Black Hole” reverb for Eventide and “Prophetic Steps” for Korg’s Prophecy synthesizer.

Drew was recently presented with the Golden Knob Lifetime Achievement Award at the Knobcon 2022 for his work in synth sound design and the contributions to the electronic music community. He’s also included in NAMM’s Oral History Series and is a frequent podcast guest.

"SGR1806-20 eurorack module
First mini demo, line recording
More news coming soon"

via Wikipedia:

"SGR 1806−20 is a magnetar, a type of neutron star with a very powerful magnetic field, that was discovered in 1979 and identified as a soft gamma repeater. SGR 1806−20 is located about 13 kiloparsecs (42,000 light-years)[1] from Earth on the far side of the Milky Way in the constellation of Sagittarius. It has a diameter of no more than 20 kilometres (12 mi) and rotates on its axis every 7.5 seconds (30,000 kilometres per hour (19,000 mph) rotation speed at the surface). As of 2016, SGR 1806-20 is the most highly magnetized object ever observed, with a magnetic field over 1015 gauss (G) (1011 tesla) in intensity[2] (compared to the Sun's 1–5 G and Earth's 0.25–0.65 G)."

Razor (1:1 MI Blades)

video upload by After Later Audio

"The next installation in our MIC line of modules is RAZOR (1:1 Blades) a dual multi-mode filter with a lot of wonderful features. 11/16/22"

"This is an exact hardware replica of the Mutable Instruments Blades module.

Our model uses the original 'hard-to-find' opamps, but we do substitute V2164M with AS2164D. All of our products use AS2164D and there should be no measurable change in behavior."

Wave Terrain Synthesis Module Audio Output

video upload by Sam Carswell

"Using the wave terrain module in 'fixed trajectory mode' as an audio rate oscillator. The output of the wave terrain module is sent through a VCA controlled by MI Tides running in envelope mode, before being sent to the output. The Synthstrom Deluge is being used to sequence the wave terrain module (1 V/Oct frequency modulation) and provide the gate for the envelope.

The terrain used in this video comes from the appendix of Stuart James' 2005 thesis, which can be found here: https://www.stuartgjames.com/research...

Unlike the 2DSINE terrain used in other videos, this terrain features a number of square-wave-like discontinuities at its edges. This can lead to sudden timbral changes when the trajectory wraps around to the other side.

The end of the video gives a close up of the screen, so you can get a better look at the trajectory. The fixed trajectory shows up slightly better on the video than the free trajectory point, but it's still a lot clearer in real life!"
