TherapSID - more ASID and DeepSID support | Playback and remix C64 SID tunes

video upload by tubesockor

"Here is a new demo with further enhancements to my development version of the ASID support for Twisted Electrons TherapSID. This enables playback of Commodore 64 SID files on the TherapSID hardware and also adds extensive remix capabilities.

Also being demoed is in-development ASID support for DeepSID - the browser-based SID player and database. When released, this means that not only TherapSID but also SidStation, Midibox and Commodore 64 (Station64) owners can playback C64 SID tunes straight from the browser.

Commodore 64 SID Songs played in the video:
0:00 Fjoss V1.1 - Moppe (2002)
1:06 Green Beret - Martin Galway (1986)
3:27 Ballad for Jeff - Shogoon (2023)"

ASID player using real C64 (Ode to 64 by Søren Lund) Station64

video upload by Avrilcadabra

"This is not my music. Though this video needs to be on the internet.

lot of this stuff is so niche or lost it just doesn't exist on youtube. it's not really what I usually do on this channel but if not me who else is going to do it.

So what's going on here. The Software on the Laptop is from Elektron's download page for the SID station. it is an ASID player. Basically you load a sid file into it and it sends that data via midi cables (not midi protocol)

so the Sidstation..Midibox sid. (I think Hardsid) can support ASID. probably others. DJ Indikator wanted a way for a real commodore 64 to be compatible with ASID so in recent years they made Station64 which is a full midi native c64 software but it amazing supports ASID. http://www.djindikator.net/c64/

The Elektron software doesn't know what it is sending to. So the c64 is playing it on its 6581r4ar into my mixer. into the little M8 tracker which is being an audio interface for my phone so this video has direct audio.

I was so happy to get this working. had to share. Also more people that hear Ode to 64 the better."

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #128: SammichSID - Song 1

video upload by Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the first song with the SammichSID. It was designed to be a streamlined, compact version of the MIDIbox SID synthesizer DIY kit. Designed around two SID chips, it is two-voice multitimbral with a total of six oscillators.

I used for the recording the following FX chain:
SammichSID - Zoom MS-70CDR - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track."

Midibox SID

video upload by Mathmatrix

"The reverb used is external, it's not coming from the Midibox Sid"

via this auction

"Midibox SID DIY synthesizer. It was built by my friend at Feedback Modules 12 years ago. It has a solid metal case and works perfectly. It's the real deal when it comes to C64 sounds. It has some gritty 8bit sounds as well as a real analogue multimode filter, 3 oscillators and plenty of modulations. The chip came from my old C64, it's the latest version, the one with the fewer bugs. I've made a video demo with some presets, you can find it on this page. The reverb is coming from an external unit."

MB-6582 midibox sid - C64 - Enigma Force cover

X1L3

"The theme from the sequel of Shadowfire recreated with the MB6582, a Boss DR550 mk2 and some supersaws to pad it out a bit.

Staying quite faithful to the original with all the modulated PWM stuff from the MB6582.

Another shout out to Fred Gray - the composer of the original C64 version.

Cheers to:
https://www.lemon64.com/
For hosting the scans that i used here :)

A fun one to do. The tune is great, and making the little comic strip recreation of the crashed shuttle opening screen bought a smile to my face :)"

MB-6582 midibox sid - C64 - Shadowfire cover

X1L3

"Messing around with the MB6582 midibox sid (with a bit of help from a supersaw to fatten up the lead melody)...

Shadowfire. I LOVE this tune. It's got a kind of epic scifi story feel to it. True childhood escapism at the time when i was really into it. I found it quite hard to recreate, but keeping close to the 8bit version i think it ended up sounding pretty cool and quite faithful to the original.

Cheers to:
http://www.c64sets.com/index.html
For the great selection of box set art and inlays which i looked up to use in the video.

http://www.ucapps.de/midibox_sid.html
For making the fact that an MB-6582 exists a reality and something i was eventually able to build :)

Shout out to Fred Gray - the composer of the original C64 version."

MB-6582 midibox sid and the armalyte nostalgia

X1L3

"Quick demo of an MB-6582 wrapped up in a Thalamus nostalgia shabby scroller, for anyone considering building one. They can do lots of conventional and nice synth stuff, but the way they can pull off being a supercharged commodore 64 is where the magic is for me. A throw back to the days of pissing my parents off by turning the tv up full blast to listen to Hubbard and Galway tracks. Such a cool machine :)"

Midibox MB6582 Maxed Out w/ Eight SID 8580's

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Midibox MB6582 Maxed Out eight SID 8580's C64 MIDI Synthesizer Rare!. Condition is Used. It's maxed out with eight 8580R5 SIDs. Beautiful blue panel from Julian (which has some scuffs) and white LED's though not too bright. A nice illuminated fan on the back with the "overdrive" pots. Loaded with latest firmware. Has the clear custom plexi window to protect the LCD display. Includes original C64 power supply. The encoders do tend to "bounce" but from my understanding it's normal, and totally manageable if you don't twist too quickly. Like I said, there are some blemishes, priced accordingly." $700 at the time of this post.

Hawkeye - Chiphead (Stereo SID Acid)

Published on Apr 13, 2019 Hawkeye

"It has been a while - we have moved and i had to do a quick new studio test - using some original MB6582 'acid' basslines created by TK./Thorsten Klose. Many, many thanks! :)

This was done in only about two hours and is not really a full track (thus the new midiphy SEQ v4+ was mostly unused). It is more of a SID stereo bassline audio demo, highly repetitive. I've also added both video takes, i am not sure which one is better or if both are bad, please tell me what you think :).

In this video, most sounds are created by DIY devices:
* MIDIbox MB6582 for a pair of 8580 SIDs in stereo bassline mode
* Mutable Instruments Anushri for the lead
* midiphy LoopA prototype for sequencing
* DIY polivoks stereo VCF to filter the drums

Recorded directly onto a Tascam audiograbber, no DAW was used, only slight audio compression added in post production.

Non-DIY equipment used:
* Vermona DRM 1 for drums
* MFB Dominion I as a secondary bassline synth

Many greets and thanks for listening and watching!

Unique Lego Cased Midibox MB-6582 SID Synthesizer w/ R2-D2s

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a rare chance to get a MB6582 SID chip Synthesizer.

The MB6582 is an extraordinary DIY synthesizer based on SID chips known from the famous C64. More infos here:

The synth was assembled by me, works perfectly and is in a very good condition! It is a very unique *Lego Edition* - only one of it's kind!

Case and potentiometer knobs are made of Lego (suitable for SIDchip sound)
The display is in 'rusty-orange' and matches the orange flat-top LEDs.
This MB6582 is also expanded with a custom active mixer circuit (+/-12V supply). It has a main L/R out, volume-pot for each engine and a Stereo/Mono switch for each engine.
Single outputs are switched, i. e. if a single output is connected to a jack, the signal is not routed to the mixer (can be changed internally)
Following chips are built in at the moment:

4 SID 6582 (1x stereo engine and 2x mono engine at the moment)
3 cores (4th core included)
The MB6582 can be expanded to 4 stereo engines by adding another 4 SID chips (SID 6581 / 6582 / 8580 - beware 6581 needs different voltage set by jumpers internally). In stereo mode 2 SID chips are used for L/R channels seperately to generate more space! i.e. by controlling filter cutoff seperately for L/R channels.
This MB6582 requires a power supply which supplies +12v/+5V/-12V/GND. I built my own specific power supply around a MeanWell RPT-60/100kHz, it can operate from 90-264VAC.

Since I am not an electrician I have to ship my power supply dissassembled and buyer must reassemble it at his own risk! (it's a very easy process!)"

B.H.Z. Quad Sid

This was one spotted on ricardo.ch, by swissdoc. According to the listing it's a:

"C64 SID Synthesizer 4x SID Chip

1x Midi In
1x Midi Out
4x Audio Out Mono je SID Chip 1 Audio Out"

If anyone knows more about this one or B.H.Z let us know! This is the first B.H.Z. post on the site.

Curious if this is a one off Midibox based SID.

Update: confirmed this is Midibox based. Now checking on what the B.H.Z. stands for. Maybe the initials of the maker.

MIDIBOX SID KEYTAR CUSTOM DIY GIANA 64 C64 COMMODORE SYNTHESIZER

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
Giana 64: Commodore 64 Keytar Published on Feb 25, 2010

"A quick demo of a keytar I built out of a Commodore 64. It uses two SID 6581 chips and was made using the Midibox Sid platform from www.ucapps.de. Better video to follow later." See here.

via this auction

"Up for auction is a unique electronic musical instrument, The Giana 64. Giana is a custom MidiBox SID v2 built into a keytar form-factor using an original Commodore 64 case for the body. The build includes several unique additions to the standard Midibox SID, including an assignable ribbon controller, expression pedal input, CV inputs, and of course the integrated keybed. A full MidiBox SID control surface is integrated into the neck.

I built Giana in the winter of 2010. It was a true labor of love, being one of the first large-scale electronics projects I ever worked on. The first video I posted of Giana went quasi-viral (by 2010 standards) and was covered by numerous synth blogs including Synthtopia; as far as I know it remains the only MIDIbox SID ever built into a keytar form-factor.

I tried to design it to look a little like a ghostbusters proton pack—some of the “retrofited” elements, like the rainbow ribbon cable running across the exterior, are not actually functional, but were fit for a hax00ry, cyberpunk vibe.

The instrument can be used flat on a table, or worn upright using the built-in strap buttons. The entire system is mounted onto a single piece of solid wood, and the plastic components are attatched with metal hardware, making it quite sturdy / gig-able.

Please note that for aesthetic purposes, the majority of the controls have been left unlabeled. The neck layouts are uniquely spaced, so that with a little practice all the major functions can be easily memorized. A PDF will also be provided labeling each function, to be used in combination with the official Midibox SID user manual.

Features:
MIDI Box SID V2 including standard MIDI I/O
Full control surface including mod matrix
Dual 6581 SIDs in stereo configuration, hand matched for similar filter characteristics
Integrated keyboard
Assignable ribbon controller (range-centered for use with pitch bend)
3 assignable CV inputs, 0-5V range, diode protected (plug and play with Euro modular)
Assignable expression pedal input
Custom power supply (not a recycled c64 PSU) provides robust power
Ships in custom case with custom foam inserts (see pictures—adapted from a rifle case)

Included Items:
Giana 64 Keytar
Custom PSU
Custom Carrying case
Moog EP-2 expression pedal
Rainbow guitar strap
Interface guide PDF

The instrument is in excellent condition, having been privately owned for 7 years, with about 3 of those years spent in storage. In preparation for the auction I tested every function and all systems are nominal. Since this is a DIY project however, the instrument is being sold as-is. Potential buyers should understand the responsibility that comes with owning a DIY instrument.

The pictures were taken a few days ago and reflect the present condition of the instrument. The linked youtube videos were recorded back when the instrument was first built. Not much has changed since then except for a few minor chips in the paint."

Hawkeye - SID Love (C64 8580 Stereo, Mutable Instruments Anushri)

Published on Nov 30, 2016 Maelstroem3

"Hola,
as recently requested by my YouTube friend KATOD_music (also a C64 SID nut :-)), here is a track that focuses again on the sound of the Commodore C64 SIDs. The synth in the upper left (red backlit knobs) houses eight 8580 SIDs in a DIY MB6582 synthesizer in four separate engines/channels, only a single stereo channel with two SIDs is used (lead stereo sweep starting at around 00:30).

Also featuring a Mutable Instruments Anushri (percussive arpeggio, right at the beginning), the Moog Little Phatty (dirty bassline, made with the LP through a DIY Polivoks filter and a Strymon Timeline delay) and an Elektron Machinedrum for percussion.

The session was recorded live, directly from the bare metal (Mackie 1604 mixer into Tascam WAV recorder) and was only slightly compressed in post-production and aligned to the video, no DAW necessary because of the fantastic MIDIbox MBSEQ V4 sequencer :-).

Hope you enjoyed it!
Thanks for watching and listening!

MIDIBox Sammich Sid Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"It is in MINT like new shape, barely ever used it. Still has protective plastic over the screen. Includes two of the famous MOS 8580 SID chips. 100% fully functional. Sounds awesome but I have decided to let go of some synths since I don't have much time for the studio these days. It includes power supply. This is an amazing chiptune style synth, and in my opinion sounds better with more option controls than the Elektron Sidstation. Hard to find one in such nice shape. Note: Sid synths do have background hums / tones / notes on some patches, this is completely normal and due to the nature of the sid chips. Power supply works worldwide but has 2-prong USA style plug. Don't miss out!"

Hawkeye - 985 Kilohertz (C64 SID vs E-MU E6400 Ultra)

Published on May 15, 2016 Maelstroem3

"This track title was inspired by the CPU frequency of the PAL Commodore 64. And what an awesome machine it is! 35 years later, we have about a million times more processing power, but has the software really become any better? :-) Back then, endless hours of tuning assembly loops, squeezing a few milliseconds out of display routines. Nowadays, we just buy newer hardware, if something is running a bit slow... and after 4K with already nearly invisible pixels 5K already awaits :-). Yes, it has been a great journey, but the beginnings were no less awesome than the current day is.

Regarding the live session: I only had the left hand available for track selection and synth action, because i held the camera in the right hand :-). Therefore, and as i am not left-handed, please forgive any strange timings or mistakes (i once accidentally flipped through the SID filter modes, but it somehow worked out :-))

Filmed with a Panasonic GH-2, the main polysynth jam loop is from an Alesis A6, the main melody is from a pair of 8580 SIDs placed in a MIDIbox SID. Drums by an E-MU E6400 Ultra (that was a bit hardware-hacked to show an oscilloscope view :-)). Secondary leads by the Ensoniq ESQ-M and the Yamaha FS1r. Bassline by a Moog LP through a DIY Polivoks VCF, all sequenced by the fantastic MIDIbox SEQ.

Hope you enjoyed this session and thanks for watching and listening.
Many greets,
Hawkeye / Maelstroem Records"
