Techno with Nanoloop + synchronized Monotron analog filter

Published on Nov 1, 2012 by KrassesZeug

"Both, a cuicuit-bent Korg Monotron and a Nanoloop (Synthesizer and Sequencer on Nintendo Gameboy) are synced by the trigger impulses sent by a Roland TR-626 drum computer.

This allows to filter the raw chiptune sound of Nanoloop by the analog filter of the Monotron. The retrigger of the Monotron LFO is the red wire. The sync mod is done like shown here: http://stevewoodward.posterous.com/lfo-reset-point-on-korg-monotron"

Modded Monotron acid demo by Gravitronic

"What you are listening to is two tracks of korg monotron, and some 909 drums via the excellent d16 909 emulation VST.

The first monotron track is MIDI sequenced from ableton live sent to a MIDI->CV converter and finally to the monotron, which has been modded and calibrated to approximately 1V/oct tuning. This is a 24-bar loop that is repeated a few times. There is reverb on this track to give it that acidy depth."

One Small Synth, Ep. 11: Korg Monotron (modified)

Published on Nov 12, 2018 Aidan Burns-Fulkerson

"This is the eleventh installment in a micro-series diving deep into my collection of minuscule synthesizers and samplers. Each episode will explore one little noise machine.

0:00 Monotron Solo

1:33 Modification information followed by demonstration.

This is a special episode: I will be talking about the modifications of my Korg Monotron and showing the new abilities that the mods have added. I’ve added control voltage and gate jacks that are wired to the existing solder pads that Korg left open for modification.

The Korg Monotron is a great little synth that excels in weird cat sounds and screaming theremin-like solos! It sounds quite powerful for something so tiny. This was the first Monotron that Korg made. It has a single oscillator, one sawtooth LFO (can modulate the pitch or the filter cutoff) and a gritty filter with cutoff and resonance control. The ribbon controller spans slightly more than one octave, and allows for precise pitch control.

Let me know if there’s a particular synth you’d like to hear, and I’ll add it to the short list for future episodes. Enjoy!"

KORG Monotron Song - Tiger Dance

YouTube via audibleobsession | October 28, 2010

"A simple KORG Monotron groove. All sounds are played with the KORG Monotron Analogue Synthesizer. Additional drums from NI Battery 3 (Preset "Dragon Kit") and convolution reverb from NI Reflektor. Compression and EQ from UAD 1176LN, Helios Type 69 EQ, and Ableton Live's 8-Band (mostly for LPF to get rid of that notorious hum that plagues the Monotron). Line-in recording into my trusty M-Audio Firewire Solo. That's it!

Dancing girls are public domain videos found on archive.org.

Apologies if the bassline and groove get repetitive, really just a quick tune trying to show the kind of badass basslines and leads you can get from the Monotron. It really shines when you get some nice PWM going and push that MS20 filter hard. The LFO self oscillates nicely too. Overall, the best $60 bucks I've ever spent. Looking forward to moding it now."

Korg Monotron

"My first jam with the Korg Monotron (not counting the hour or so before I set the camera up). Difficult to play in tune, but fun for making crazy electronic noises!"

Overdub session - Korg Monotron from Keith Handy on Vimeo.

"This is my first go at using the new Korg Monotron (teeny tiny analog ribbon synthesizer) on an actual recording. The first half of the video is a raw take (you may notice a few "iffy" notes), and the second half is the sound of several takes blended together."

Circuit-bent Monotron: LFO retriggered by Roland TR-626

Published on Oct 11, 2012 by KrassesZeug

"The low frequency oscillator (LFO) of a Korg Monotron synthesizer is retriggered by the trigger impulse from a Roland TR-626 drumcomputer. The trigger sequence is the same as the rim-shot pattern programmed in the TR-626. In this case the rim-shot sound is muted. The synchronization does also work if the tempo of the drumcomputer is changed. The audio of the TR-626 is passed thru the filter of the Monotron, allowing a significant improvement of the sound of this digital drum computer.

KORG Monotron TeensyDuino MIDI USB Control & iPad Editor

My Monotron Duo - TeensyDuino 3.1 USB Midi, plus digital potentiometers and DACs

Published on Apr 13, 2014 Alessandro Fasan·1 video

"I wanted to share how I MIDI-fied my Monotron Duo from Korg.
The TeensyDuino 3.1 controls a dual DAC and a dual digital potentiometer.
Many thanks to Marc Nostromo for inspiring this design.
I plan to share the SW with Marc Nostromo's blog, what I came up with is based on the code that he originally posted in his blog (it was for the regular Monotron).
The challenge with the Monotron Duo is that it requires two voltage controls (one for the ribbon, one for the octave), so it required some reverse-engineering from the schematics that Korg kindly made available."

So73 - Korg Monotron As Lead Synthesizer

YouTube via soundofseventythree | August 04, 2010

"I figured it was time someone made a little music with the Korg Monotron rather than just noise. This one is called the Monosong featuring the Korg Monotron as a lead synthesizer. It was improvised in one take.

The Monotron was fed into my Mini-KP to add delay & reverb. The backing track was created using my Korg Kaossilator for the first drum loop, the bassline, and the chord progression. The second drum loop was created using the Zoom MRT-3B Micro RhythmTrak filtered through the Monotron's MS-20 filter. The guitar is my Reverend Warhawk HB run direct into my Korg PX5D Pandora.

Video shot with my Digital Harinezumi 2++ in monochrome mode and edited in iMovie 6 HD.

Download this track free here: http://www.reverbnation.com/soundofse...

Also check out the self titled album by Sound of Seventy Three now available for download at iTunes, Amazon.com and most online retailers!

Thanks for watching and listening!"

More mini synths:

So73 "Tremolos" - Akai LPK25 & LPD8; Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass; Danelectro Effects

soundofseventythree | April 06, 2010

"Music available for download at: http://soundofseventythree.bandcamp.c...

This one is called Tremolos. It features the Akai LPK25 & the LPD8 which are a couple of new additions to my studio. It also features my original Reverend Warhawk electric guitar run through a Danelectro Surf & Turf compressor and a Danelectro Corned Beef reverb into a Vox Amplug, A Squire 70's Vintage Modified Jazz Bass run into a Vox Amplug Bass with the compressor on, Stylophone, Rotary Vibraphone from Apple's Jam Pack 1, Mellotron strings & 15 Choir from the M-Tron plugin, and GarageBand electric piano set to tine.

Let me just say that LOVE these new Akai laptop controllers! I've used a lot of midi controllers over the years big and small and these are a couple of the best controllers I have used of any size! The Akai LPK25 has a good feel for the size and great velocity response. The Akai LPD8 has the as good feeling pads of any drum controller I have used and again a great velocity response. Of course there are some compromises with the size but overall I love the response, feel and build of these little controllers. They fit perfectly with the way I like to work. I guess you should not expect any less from Akai.

The video as always was done with my Canon IS S3 and edited in iMovie. I hope my digital Harinezumi is here before my next video so I can use it for a bit of a change."

And one last track featuring the Zoom ST-224 & MRT3:

So73 "Echos Remix" - Zoom ST-224 & MRT3; Squier 70's Vintage Modified Jazz Bass; & Reverend Warhawk

soundofseventythree | January 28, 2010

"Music now available for download: http://soundofseventythree.bandcamp.c...

This is my remix of the last song I posted on youtube called Echos. I feel that maybe there is a little Madlib influence in here as well as some St. Germain.

I sampled the lap-steel part on my Zoom SampleTrak ST-224 at standard quality (read dirty and grungy) and started messing around with it, eventually slowing it down and filtering it. I came up with a new drum part on the Zoom MRT3 Micro Rhythm Trak drum machine and sampled that too. Then I recorded both parts into GarageBand.

In GarageBand I added the bass part played on my Squier 70's Vintage Modified Jazz Bass with my amplug bass into my Korg Pandora PX5D Pandora as a recording interface. The guitar was played on my Reverend Warhawk original into the PX5D Pandora. I also added Mellotron flutes from the M-Tron by typing them in on my MacBook's keyboard as I am without a proper keyboard at the moment. I tried to get the live parts to sound like they were sampled from an old scratchy record from the 60s.

The video was done in iMove HD with the footage shot on my Canon S3 IS."

How to Get Square & Pulse Waves From the Korg Monotron

PICSYNTH aka Monotron Delay Mods has a new page up on how to get square and pulse waves out of the KORG Monotron.

"The sawtooth wave from the VCO-out connection can be converted to a pulse wave of any width. When the width is exactly 50% you get the distinctive hollow sound of the square wave. These waveforms allow you to create a LOT more sounds.

The idea behind this mod was to change the sawtooth into a pulse wave and then feed it into the AUX input jack. The main challenge was how to cut off the sawtooth wave connected internally in the Monotron so you could just hear the new pulse or square waves and not the sawtooth..."
