"Jim Coker, founder of Five12 and the inventor of the Numerology and Vector sequencers, is also a performing electronic musician. We catch up with Jim at Knobcon 22, and talk about his latest work, "Meridian Alpha From the Distant Shores of Cygnus X1". We gain insight into both his compositional process and his elaborate live rig, which uses both Numerology and Vector.

"Based on the popular plugin Numerology, the Five12 Vector Sequencer is a unique take on Eurorack sequencing—balancing easy access to specific rhythms and melodies with complex generative behavior.

In this video, we use a small Eurorack system comprised of only an Erica Synths Bassline, Mutable Instrument Plaits, and Make Noise Mimeophon. By controlling these with the Vector Sequencer, we create everything from minimalistic grooves to interlocking melodic patterns and ratcheting rhythms.

"Demos and studies on FM synthesis and MIDI CCs using Yamaha fs1r synth module and Five12 Numerology sequencing software... Only the last track is multi--tracked, the rest are just one of the 4 layers in the fs1r. So no layers or splits etc... Any effects, with the exception of EQ and compression from Logic, are from the fs1r. Some examples feature sequencing and MIDI CCs from Five12 Numerology."

"Previously improvised Numerology session played back in 3 voices fed to a MOTM 650 MIDI interface to 2 synthesizer dotcom oscillators and a Modcan VCDO into MOTM 440 filter (to the right of the white Modcan - kickass filter) and below that the dotcom State variable filter, 2 dotcom EG's and all that geeky stuff baby! Much use is made of the dotcom oscillators' soft sync in, with musical intervals driving the aforermentioned. This is an overdub for a bigger piece with loops and like, 'real' music."

"The very tail end of another long jam. Audio is right off the camera, dog barks at 5:10 and all. I kinda like the raw-ness and rough edges of it. Couldn't get that vibe from the direct mix.

I heart and used the following in this episode: Synthesizers.com mostly + MOTM 650 and 440, + STG Post Lawsuit filter + Modcan VCDO . Volta used for sync into the 4 rows of a Moon Modular trigger sequencer. Numerology was doing other things earlier but by this point it's set on like 31 against 29 or something to mess with yo head. And it may indeed drive you crazy. That's your problem now."

"Numerology 3 Pro and analog step sequencers in the modular. A real-time studio recording in Cubase 6. Synths used were the modular synths, Waldorf MWXT, MicroQ, TX816, Nord Lead 2X, Prophet 8, DX7II and Korg ES-1. Using a Novation Launchpad to control the Numerology tracks. Step sequencers are dotcom Q960, Q119 and STG Soundlabs Time Suite. The opening and closing sound is a new SSL1130 DDVCO through a CGS01 harmonic sequencer and back into the DDVCO exponential and linear modulation inputs. Video editing in Final Cut Pro X."

"Another feeble attempt at showing how a Kaoss Pad can be used as an awesome control surface for a modular synth. I'm horrible at talking while I'm syntherbating so most of my words are just rambling. Sorry.

The details... The MIDI from my KP3 is controlling Expert Sleepers' Silent Way DC plug-in hosted in Numerology. The CV is sent out of my MOTU interface via ADAT to ES-3 CV interface.

The signals generated by Silent Way are used to control the Make Noise Phonogene granular sampler. Audio from Phonogene goes into the Korgasmatron filter and then the zDSP.

The additional synth parts are all coming from the modular. Again I'm using Numerology and Silent Way to generate the sequences. The drums are from my Octatrack, all sounds sampled from the modular."
