Yamaha SY22 Dynamic Vector Synthesis

video upload by Alfonse

"Music: 'Convolution' (C) Copyright 2023 Alfonse
Download the track here: https://alfonse.bandcamp.com/album/syfy

Yamaha SY22 Music Synthesizer (1990)

All sounds in this track are SY22 factory presets, including the drums. The SY22 was launched in 1990 and is effectively a hybrid of Yamaha's outgoing FM synthesizer technology with their new AWM sample-based engine, with 2 FM operators and 2 AWM oscillators. A joystick provides vector control to blend between the chosen waveforms in the patch in different ways, either by affecting their volume (Level) or their pitch (Detune).

Patches used:
P25 ICE FIELD
P28 THRILLER
P74 VCO SYNC
P62 SYN BASS
P23 SAD ANGEL
P27 VECTASEQ
P77 GROOVER
P32 PINPIANO
P14 DIST GTR
P81 SUPERPAD
P18 NOSTROMO
P82 PROPHECY
P88 DRUM KIT

Programming new patches via the front panel is a fairly thankless task, but there is a good editor out there: https://ctrlr.org/sy35-voice-editor/

Big thanks to @musicbroth for the loan of this keyboard. They're a fantastic community music resource in Glasgow, UK, loaning instruments and running workshops with a mission to provide access to music for everyone. https://www.musicbroth.org

Yamaha SY22 | Trade or throw?

video upload by Espen Kraft

"Yamaha SY22 - Dynamic Vector Synthesizer. From 1990. When Sequential Circuit went out of business and was bought up by Yamaha some of the team, headed by John Bowen went to work on the Korg Wavestation (also owned by Yamaha at the time) while Yamaha themselves went on to work on the SY22. As with the Prophet VS and the Wavestation, the SY22 works with 4 different elements, sound sources, oscillators or whatever you might call them, and with a joystick you can control their relative levels to each other. Or you can use the joystick to detune them. Coupled with in-built internal effects, 16 voices of polyphony and 8-part multi timbral (as well as a drum kit) it was a cheaper alternative of getting into "vector" synthesis.

Since the shooting of this video I've traded my SY22 for a Yamaha DX9. I've never really liked the sound coming out of the SY22. It can definitely be lo-fi, or glossy, and it can be a nice textured contrast to other synths, but sometimes you just don't "click" with certain synths and for me this is one of those cases."

Korg Wavestate - No talking demo - Part 1

video upload by Andrea Di Lorenzo - Music Lab

"Hi, everyone!

Here's to you the amazing Korg Wavestate, the new frontier in Wave Sequencing synthesis, originally introduced by the Korg Wavestation (but also the Prophet VS, the Yamaha SY22, the Yamaha TG33 and some other legendary synths).

◉ The new Wavesequencing 2.0 that lets you create an ever-changing sound of incredible depth;
◉ Vector joystick X/Y for the control of the 4 layers;
◉ Filters derived from MS-20 and Polysix;
◉ Onboard effects;
◉ Gigabytes of raw samples;
◉ 37 full-size keys;
◉ 64 stereo voices;
◉ and much more.

Wavestate can give you extensive modulation capabilities and with the new Sample Builder you can also load up to 4 Gigabytes of your own multisamples.

But most of all, I really love its overall stunning sound quality, reminiscent of modular synthesizers, groove boxes, algorithmic generators and much more.

In this demo I just go through some presets among my favourites. No additional effects or outboard processing here. What you listen is what you get!"

Yamaha TG33 w/ Original Box & Manual

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

"The TG33 sound module is a slightly enhanced key-less version of the SY22. It is a digital synthesizer that employs frequency modulation (FM) synthesis combined with low-fi (12-bit) AWM ROM samples. However, this machine is not low quality (especially for the electronica-oriented musician). Its preset sounds are a bit thin, however using the joystick controller you can manipulate and combine the 12-bit samples with the any of the 256 FM vector voices. This gives it a range of tone and sound that is as dynamic and mysterious as other vector synths such as the Korg Wavestation and ProphetVS.

Also available is a drum kit, effects, 16-part multitimbrality for layering sounds and 32 note polyphony! Definitely a powerful little beast that can create pretty nice sounds with lots of motion and character. With its wide range of sonic possibility, the TG33 has what it takes to create unique sounds that will keep you and you're music sounding a little different from the rest!"

YAMAHA SY35 Vector Synthesizer 1992 | HD DEMO

Published on Aug 13, 2019 AnalogAudio1

"(c) 2019 by AnalogAudio1

I played the YAMAHA SY35 without any additional effects or eq.

The vector synthesizer Yamaha SY35 came out 1992 and was the successor of the successful SY22. The SY35 has partly new/different waveforms, new and better drum samples (16-bit).

Although instruments like Roland D-50 and Kawai K-1 have joysticks to mix parts of the sound, they are not vector synths. A real vector synth can reproduce the vector moves within a sound program.

The SY35 is a quite simple but effective vector synthesizer - simple to use and to program. No filters. One sound consist of 2 or 4 elements 2 FM (4-op frequency modulation) and 2 AWM (sample playback). You can record a vector move into a patch and play it back with a keystroke. You could edit and loop the vector moves, edit the speed... you can achieve some really interesting, dynamic sounds. Built in effect processor for reverb and delay. The effects can not be tweaked.

You hear sounds created by me and some factory presets."

DSI EVOLVER Analog Digitalis

Published on Jan 11, 2019 UFO LFO

"Playing with this quirky devices wavetables"

Prophet VS waveforms no less. Note there are two types of wavetables - static wavetables that hold digital waves you can select from, and PPG/Waldorf/Transwave style wavetables that allow you to sweep and sometimes morph between waveforms with a modulator. The Prophet VS and Evolver were static, however with the VS you could morph the mix levels between the four source waveforms with a Joystick. This was vector synthesis which made its way to the Yamaha SY22 and TG33, followed by the KORG Wavestation.

New Vector Hardware Desktop Synthesizer In the Works

Published on Sep 18, 2018 Vector

Update:

I took a closer look at the video and the image to the left. It looks like the Orbit and Suborbit controls are for the vector portions of the synth engine. If you are not familiar with vector synthesis, it was introduced with the Sequential Circuits Prophet-VS. That tech made it to the Yamaha SY22 and TG-33, and finally the KORG Wavestation. In short, you have four oscillators that you can morph between with either a joystick or a modulation source. The Orbit and Suborbit controls appear to be the modulators as you can see on the screen. It's similar to being able to record and playing joystick movement on the SY22 and TG33. It's also similar to the paths in Moog's Animoog app.

Below is a list of controls I spotted in the video and the image. If I missed any, feel free to leave a comment. Note Vector synths typically have four oscillators. The screen in the video only shows two, so we will have to wait and see. You can see the synth features overdrive, reverb, delay, and chorus effects. There is also an arpeggiator and audio iput.

Update2: grabbed a screen of the quick front panel flash in the video. Click on it to zoom in a little. You should be able to read most of the controls.

Sequential Circuits PROPHET VS Digital Vector Synthesizer with 1.2 OS

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Note the comment in the following description regarding it doesn't sound like a subtractive synth is a bit misleading. It is a subtractive synth with four digital oscillators that you can morph through. That said, with its analog filters it does sound amazing. Vector synthesis made its way in entirely digital form into the Yamaha TG33 & SY22, followed by the KORG Wavestation.

"The Yamaha TG33 is a 32-voice programmable synthesizer module featuring AWM and FM synthesis under vector control. Many automatic vector ("dynamic vector") patches are offered in the presets, but the vector control joystick on this module allows real time manipulation of vector level and detune, allowing the user a high degree of expression. There are two preset banks of sounds, plus an Internal and a Multi bank, and the option of adding RAM cards for even more patch storage.
The TG33 is a fairly compact synth, and can be set up as a desktop module, or mounted in a rack with the included rack ears. On the MIDI side, in, out and thru are offered. There are two sets of stereo outputs to add your own effects on mix-down, but the unit also includes 16 types of digital effects on board.
