Syntecno TeeBee

images via this auction

"Soundwise, this is the best 303 clone out there, plus it has MIDI, a ring mod oscillator, audio input, and 4 CV / gate outputs, and a MIDI merger. It is the swiss army knife of acid.

"The TeeBee is (according to most magazines and customers) the clone which has imitated the sound of the original Roland Tb303 the best. This means :
- The filter (18 dB, 2-pole) & oscillator has been made with the same components as the original TB303.
- The slide (portamento) has been fully integrated and can be controlled with a midi controller, or by using overlapping notes (AutoGlide).
- The accent function of the original has been integrated and can be controlled by sending attack velocities larger then 100.
- The TeeBee is attack velocity sensitive.

All the potentiometers of the TeeBee are able to sent and receive midi controllers.
So, you can record all the movements of the potentiometers while you are in the studio.
Afterwards, you can use these controller-trax at for example a life performance.
The TeeBee will respond to these controllers without any zipper noise or hearable clicks.

All the potentiometers can respond to any controller you assigned them to. This way you can use the TeeBee as an universal midi controller. For example, when you are using an effect processor, it's often possible to assign for example the reverb level to a controller. If you assign the same controller to a potentiometer on the TeeBee, you can now control the reverb level with any potentiometer on the TeeBee. This can be done for all 5 midi controllable potentiometers on the TeeBee.

There are 3 waveforms in the VCO of the TeeBee. (Saw, Square, Ring) The Ring waveform was not included in the original. The ring oscillator of the TeeBee is the same oscillator which is used as in the Korg MS20. The sounds produced with this oscillator are well suited for goa-trance and jungle music. More harmonics and a broader sound describes the Ring modulator.

When you want to filter your samples from your sampler (or other sound sources), you can use the analog input of the TeeBee for this. Just plug the output of your sampler into the analog input of the TeeBee. Now you can filter your samples in real-time, using the potentiometers or midi controllers with an original TB303 filter (the TeeBee). The Cutoff, Resonance, Envelop modulator and Decay potentiometers can now be used to change the characteristic of the filter. Also it is possible to 'overlay' the VCO of the TeeBee at the same time. The analog input of The analog input of the TeeBee is mixable, thus enabling you to mix the VCO of the TeeBee with an external sound source and run them both through the filter of the TeeBee. This results in ultra fat sounds.

If you have older equipment which can only be controlled by CV/Gate, then you can use the TeeBee for making these devices midi controllable. The TeeBee can control almost all synthesizers of Roland, Korg, Moog and other brands. Also you can use any free CV output on the TeeBee for controlling a control voltage input on an analog synth with the potentiometers or with midi controllers. For example, the Korg MS20 has a filter control input. With the TeeBee it's possible to control the analog input with a midi controller. Now you can not only make your MS20 midi controllable, you can also make most of it's parameters (knobs) midi controllable. The CV/Gates respond fast and with good accuracy. Pitch bend information is transmitted very fast through the CV/Gate outputs in both V/Hz mode and V/Oct mode.

The midi merger which is included in TeeBee Mark III, will save you many swapping of midi cables. When you do not have several midi inputs on your computer, you would have to change midi cables all the time. This is caused by the fact that you want to be able to record from your keyboard and at the same time be able to record controllers and sysex dumps from the TeeBee. With the TeeBee Mark III, the 2 midi merge inputs will solve this problem for you. You can connect up to 2 keyboards and record midi information from them and from the TeeBee at the same time.
The midi merger in the TeeBee can also be used as a stand-alone 2-channel midi merger or for being able to control all your midi equipment at the same time from 2 (yes two) computers. Now you can control all your equipment from your ST running cubase and at the same time from your pentium running cakewalk or cubase.

The sync output of the TeeBee will sync your SH101, MC202 or TR808
Changes made to any of the setting of the TeeBee are stored in memory.
All these specs sound very cool, but it's the sound which matters most. And that's what makes the TeeBee the best from all available clones.

Roland TR-808 and Jazz Chorus JC-120

via swissdoc:

"I recorded some examples of the Roland Jazz Chorus driven by a TR808 pattern.

This one is recorded in mono with a Sony F-VS7 Dynamic Microphone, I had to do some noise reduction to get rid of the prominent hum:

This one is recorded in mono with a Monacor ECM-100 Electret Condensor Microphone:

The dry signal is recorded directly from the TR808.

I then allways tweak the settings of the amp.

Volume is set to very low value, max 1 out of 10. Otherwise the house would explode.

The distortion of the amp is not the best one on this planet. They should have labeled it destruction or shredder :-)"

Yocto Analog Drum Machine Demo (Diy Roland TR-808 Clone)

Published on Jun 4, 2018 Sound Provider

"Here is the quick demo of the DIY TR 808 Clone from e-licktronic by Leonard de Leonard , The Yocto.
This is not an easy diy project, a friend help me to fix some stuff at the end.
I test it in front of Acidlab Miami /Roland Tr8 &Tr8s TipTop Audio Eurorack Modules and a Real Tr808, and this is my favorite with the real Tr808.
For this demo I use separate output for the Kick snare and HiHat and I use SSL eq and compressor to mix the sound.
I use it a lot for the Analog Drum Sample Soundbank of Sound Provider www.sound-provider.eu .
Enjoy and like always feel free to subscribe to the channel for more :)"

The 8raw8 Analog Drum Machine Expander Based on the Roland TR-808

Details via 8raw8:

"The 8raw8 is an Analog Drum Machine Expander, clone of the Legendary Roland TR808. It is designed to be an affordable reproduction of the original 808, without any compromise on the Sound. Each unit is unique, Handbuilt with passion in our little factory in southern France.

•11 Analog drum voices + Accent
•Separate Output for each voice
•Master Output
•Through Hole electronic components
•Ultra Fast MIDI processing
•BassDrum Tune Mod
•HandClap VCA Mod
•Rock solid Aluminium Chassis
•Quality Alpha™ potentiometers
•Moog Style rotary knobs
•Dimensions: 435x290x90mm (WxDxH)
•Weight: 3kg

What we wanted to achieve with the 8raw8, is a 1:1 reproduction of the old fashionned TR808 electronic circuitry. A simple, useful device focused on the authentic sound.

Every Active component on the signal path is the exact same reference as those used in the original 808. This includes: OPamps, transistors, diodes, signal ICs. At the exception of the HandClap VCA (orig:BA662), replaced by it's little brother (BA6110) sounding perfect with little tweaks.

When we recieve parts, we make sure they are true originals by testing them. It took ages to find the real deal.

We experienced a lot of Mods when prototyping, some were cool and ohters were just too crazy… In order to keep the 8raw8 authentic, we decided to include the most useful mods only."

•BassDrum Tune Mod: allows you to modify the BD pitch.
Adjust the BassDrum oscillator frequency in the key of your song, or create basslines using long decay settings (rather than DAW detuning).
Recall standard pitch by turning off the "Mod on/off" switch.

•HandClap VCA Mod: From soft clicky handclap to loud harsh CLAP.
Opening the VCA potentiometer in Maracas mode will create a cool white noise FX (the clap isn't triggered anymore)."

MIDI Interface

Each voice is triggered via MIDI note, including Accent.
The standard 1 octave midi mapping ranges from C3 to B3 (11 analog voices + Accent).

The 8raw8 is not velocity sensitive on purpose. It kills the oldschool drum machine vibe. Only Accent can accentuate the overall volume/tone on the desired steps of your drum pattern, just like the original 808.

MIDI Processing is very fast, allowing you to create those 808 'trap' drumrolls with ease."

Roland Animation NFTs

TB303 from Arthr on Vimeo.

Part of an evolving collection, 'A Journey Through Synths'.
Full story & background: https://www.arthr.net/post/tb303

"Similar to all the other animations in this series, the sounds are recorded from the original unit that’s visually featured. I wanted the sound of the 303 to be unmistakable, so tracked the full rasp and squelch of the unit. The cutoff frequency and resonance parameters were gradually increased over the duration of the audio, so you really get to hear the sound open up. In 3D I built a small controller with rotary encoder type knobs that would operate the corresponding controls on the 303. Arthr then hovers over the knobs and strikes them with lightning to keep them energised and moving! To control Arthr’s back and forth motion and the on/off button for the lightning, I used a joystick reminiscent of the old Atari CX40 that would control all of this motion."

TR808 from Arthr on Vimeo.

Part of an evolving collection, 'A Journey Through Synths'.
Full story & background: https://www.arthr.net/post/tr808

"As it’s been such an important part of my musical passage, ’A Journey Through Synths’ had to include the SH101. As with all the animations in this series, the sounds are recorded/sampled from the original unit that’s visually featured. The style of the main lead line you hear appears in most of my productions with the cutoff frequency and square wave mix parameters being modified.

To maintain an accurate sync between the audio with what’s happening visually, I built a little slide controller in 3D that would control the corresponding controls on the 3D SH101. To sync these with accuracy I matched the FX envelopes in Ableton to the timeline in 3D. Arthr also plays out the arrangement of notes on the keyboard, so each key was animated in line with the audio timeline. Next to the parameter controls, I thought it might also be fun to have a live recording device setup with a visual waveform to capture Arthr’s live performance as it happens."

SH101 from Arthr on Vimeo.

Part of an evolving collection, 'A Journey Through Synths'.
Full story & background: https://www.arthr.net/post/sh101

"The animation for the 808 started with figuring out which components on the machine would be interactive. In order to emphasise the punchy, sharp transients of the drums, the only way to represent this was for Arthr to jump and land on every step switch with precision to make that solid audiovisual connection. As the drum pattern extends across the entire front of the machine, getting Arthr back to the beginning to start his loop again proved challenging. Experiments with backflips, cartwheels and other martial arts moves all looked a bit forced and artificial. The solution came after reminiscing with my nan about the time we broke one of the claw machines at the arcade and so the controlled claw came to mind. The Atari CX40 inspired joystick with a button to activate the claw grip seemed like a nice way to get him back to the start, whilst also giving a nod to another iconic piece of hardware from a bygone era."

TR909 from Arthr on Vimeo.

"For the 909 I wanted to increase the level of detail in the scene. I really enjoyed the waveform feedback built into the SH101 animation, so constructed a device Arthr could operate that would include this. The industrial looking machine lets Arthr tap out the kick drum sequence in the track with a gavel/hammer like apparatus. Other little details included are the ever-spinning clock, accurate BPM display and the beat pulsing cables."
