February Filter Sweep YouTube Protest & a Call to any YouTube / Google Employees

Youtube claimed copyright on a synth filter sweep video by ranzee

"I can't believe we are now getting copyright claims just for performing tests on synths! Yep - all I did was a filter sweep - and BAM! Copyright Claim police came on in and took my video away (partially) from the world. This is ludicrous!"

This one was sent my way via supporting member, Synth Addict.

For those not aware, YouTube has algorithms that scan audio in videos for copyright infringement. If something is found in violation, the video is automatically unpublished. The problem? Apparently certain filter sweeps are triggering take downs. This is becoming a problem for synth demos (per ranzee above, and previously mentioned here for example). I am curious what sample is being used for the comparison. Rush's Tom Sawyer? :) Actually, Synth Addict mentioned it being a Chemical Brothers track, which does sound familiar. Anyway, if anyone out there reading this has any connections, maybe you can reach out to someone that can fix this?

For the rest of us, not sure how the following will help, but if anything it will bring some attention to the problem amongst the synth community.

via Synth Addict:

"What users can do:

Post a video on YouTube of yourself demonstrating a filter sweep on a synth or synths of your choice and tag it #FFS

ELKA DRUMMER ONE Analog Rhythm Box 1969 | HD DEMO | SAMPLE PACK

Published on Nov 26, 2015 AnalogAudio1

"(c) 2015 by AnalogAudio1

The DRUMMER ONE is a very rare, professional analog rhythm box from Elka, Italy. High quality hardware. All rhythms are mixable. All drum sounds have volume knobs to set the volume individually. It was primarily used by krautrock artists as Cluster (Zuckerzeit) and Kraftwerk.

I played the Drummer One with a small amout of ambience from a Lexicon MPX-500 and delay from a Korg SDD-3000. At the end of the video you hear SDD-3000 echo madness ;-)

Mellotron / Novatron T550 + 2 original custom made tapeframes

via this auction

Playlist
Vako Orchestron Vocal Choir - Mellotron 8 Voice Choir
Vako Orchestron Violins - Mellotron MKII Violins
Vako Orchestron Flute - Mellotron MKII Flute
Vako Orchestron Cello - Mellotron Cello
Vako Orchestron Pipe Organ - Mellotron Church Organ
Vako Orchestron String Ensemble - Mellotron String Section
MELLOTRON / NOVATRON T.550 / T550 / T 550 / / ORGAN / HD

via this auction

"It is one of the rarest Mellotrons in the world, as only 3 or 4 were ever made. This particular instrument was shown on the Frankfurt Musikmesse in 1982 but wasn't sold there. The story of the first owner (I am the second) is that he bought it when the Musikmesse was just finished. He bought the instrument in Frankfurt for quite a low price, as the makers didn't have to transport it back to the UK then. From 1982 until 2010 when I bought it it has hardly been used and was stored in a smokefree, clean and dry room. This explains why this instrument looks and sounds as it is a brand new one.

The first picture shows the instrument from above
The second picture shows the crate which I made for transport - with foam on the inside (yes, it is already in a flightcase but the flightcase is part of the instruments value, so I don't want scratches on it
The third picture shows an original ad for the T550
The last one shows my rehearsal room with the Novatron in the far right corner (the black flightcase)

I have also made some recordings and videos of the instrument during the short period I had it: [above]
Church Organ: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7j1g04BAYU
8choir: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gLZaFPNocc
MKII Flute: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9W2b88iPbQ
Cello: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0Vh-_tOYvs
String Section; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOkkd8kwHOs
MKII Violins: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1xlmN8QKIU

And this is a demo video of this Novatron T550: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHUpRIrFngI

In these videos, the first instrument you'll see is not the Novatron, but my Vako Orchestron. Don't mix these two up! A Mellotron uses tapes, an Orchestron uses discs with waveforms on it.

In this auction, apart from the instrument itself, you will get the two original tapeframes who were sold with the instrument (and presumably used to demo the instrument in Frankfurt)
Frame 1 = Church Organ, Male/female choir, Male choir/Oboe mix
Frame 2= Cello, Flute, Choir mix.

You can also bid on the two other tapeframes I am selling (search ebay for Mellotron tape frame)
You'll also get the original swell pedal, and original manuals and ads."

New YouTube Audio Compression Stymies Uploaders

Update: image via Sonic State

Our friend Jexus, aka WC Olo Garb wrote in to let us know that YouTube has changed their encoding resulting in much lower quality audio. You can read about it on the Wired blog as well as this thread. Alternatives? Vimeo and Sonicstate TV, although the one thing YouTube does have is the community and exposure. You can see how many plays your videos get and you can see where they are coming from. I find it interesting to see how many hits a post here has generated for the video. I've had a number of people recognize the site because of this. Hopefully YouTube will correct the problem and others will build in the public tracking functionality of YouTube. What can you do? Not sure. Just be aware of it and chose your hosting accordingly. You can also chime in on the YouTube thread. If enough people speak out maybe they'll fix the problem. If you run a blog let your readers know.

The problem via Wired in a nutshell:
"Some YouTube users are mounting a growing revolt against the site's new audio scheme, which has degraded the sound quality of clips on the site by running them through an audio processor that wreaks havoc with songs' dynamic range (the variation between loud and soft), diminishing their sound quality.
This is not "compression" as in bit rate or file format, but in the audio engineer sense of the word: the smushing together of various volumes into a smaller dynamic range. This sort of compression doesn't affect slickly-produced, radio-ready music quite as much, since it's already so compressed, but it hurts any music that has been properly produced, and does more damage to nuanced recordings with lots of dynamic range."

Roland 106 Repair - Part 1

YouTube via spindizzyman | June 13, 2009

"Taking a voice chip out of a Roland Juno 106 and sticking it in acetone to strip the resin. I figured out that Chip 4 was bad in my unit. I've never done any kind of electronics before so this just shows you how easy it can be (with a healthy dose of patience and a steady hand).

First you should figure out what chip is bad. You can do this by powering on the unit while holding the key transpose button. Then hitting a key and watching the display cycle through numbers 1-6. If nothing plays on a number or the sound sustains on that number (hit different notes to hear it change pitch) then you know what chip it is.

There is a great video on youtube that shows you how to strip the resin off a chip and hopefully repair it. This is apparently due to overheating and conductivity due to the old resin.

Taking it out of the unit is pretty easy and you can search youtube for videos on how to open up the 106 and get the board out with the voice chips attached.

I have never done any electronics work before so I practiced on an old VCR for an hour. I learned how to take out components and solder them back in until I felt comfortable.

It helps if you have a few drinks before hand to steady your hand and nerves. Ok, probably not but it was Saturday and I'm all about the tequila on a Sat afternoon with nothing more to do than some trial electronics work.

In part 2 I'll figure out how to strip the resin and re-solder the chip back into the board and re-install into the 106 to test.

All credit where it's due just google 106 repair and you'll see the videos I watched to learn how to do this or look up

http://www.youtube.com/user/rolandsh1000

for the resin strip and...

http://www.youtube.com/user/ShakerCuda71

To see how to remove the board from the unit.

Cheers!"

Casio RZ-1PLUS Drum Machine Circuit Bent Mod

YouTube via kenzie2029
"If you want to skip the explanation and hear what it does, skip to around 4 min.

This is the Casio RZ-1 Plus version. This is Casio stock version of this type of mod:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBvcXl... [below]
The kits are acoustic, electric and Latin. The number one best feature about Casio version is that its has four banks of sample memory giving you the ability of sampling 16 sounds.

The bends and mods to this drum are similar to this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVLQ0O... [below]
I painted this one white, redid the text, added wood panels, and upgraded the materials used.

Has a 30 point RCA patch bay that short circuits three of the eprom chips for a total of around 480 possible patches (if I did my math right). You can patch with in the chips and chip to chip. In addition to the patch bay there are five input / output on/off switch section with toggle switches and momentary buttons. Each toggle switch also has an LED indicator.

I also added a switch to bypass the RZ-1s main timing crystals with two getlofi 1799 precision oscillators to allow for some great pitch control. These also have LED indicators.

I've added 10k pots on the top to easier access the samples tone control. Also, I replaced the internal permanent soldered battery with a replaceable one.

Drums in the song you here are also the RZ -1

Also, tucked deep in the lab is a Commodore 64 that I'm working on."

"Casio Drum Machine Circuit Bent Part 2 (Casio RZ1 RZ 1 RZ-1)

Has a 24 point RCA patch bay that short circuits three of the four eprom chips. The different chips are for certain samples, so some patches effect only certain sounds. There is now a switch to bypass the RZ-1s main timing crystals with two getlofi 1799 precision oscillators to allow for some great pitch control. I still have a little bit of tweaking to do with some different pots and resistors.
