MIDIbox FM

"MIDIbox FM utilizies the Yamaha YMF262 sound chip (also known as OPL3) for generating the famous FM sounds known from Soundblaster (compatible) soundcards of the early 90s. In addition to the OPL3 specific features (6 four-operator voices, 5 percussion instruments) some software implemented modulation sources have been added to allow more expressive and very experimental sound creations."

I saw The Chemical Brothers Live at Union Station in 1997 in Seattle. Great show and definitely one of my favorite bands. Thanks to brian comnes for bringing this to my attention. It doesn't get much better than this.

NIN Survivalism Remix by hexfix93 of VAC

Remember this post? Title link takes you to the MP3 by hexfix93 of VAC.

"The main bass line is the future retro revolution, the chorus is my modular stacked with the korg micro x. drums are xbase 09, and some samples coming out of logic. i streamed all the audio tracks out into my onyx 1620, and some into the 1202 vlz pro that goes back into the onyx. Ran the modular the ksp8 stereo rotor fx with a band pass bass sound doubling the huge microx bass distorted thing, the band pass sounds was 2 plan b osc pwm hardcore. the weird noises at the end were some of my filter fm sounds from the ssm module and the planb osc. It's a pretty simple mix, and of course i used a lot of the weird noises that were buried in the original mix and brought them out.. I ran it all back in through my fireface 800 and recorded it into logic, than put it in wavlab and ran the l3 on it to get it a little louder. but its not really mastered much. so its really raw still..

i hope this gets some club play.. :)

Why did i do this remix? to tip my hat to trent. why? because he is the only industrial star i still like, he went hard core animal rights, and his vocals still have tons of emotion, that is not something i can say about the other industrial acts making new records recently.. I think there is a big lack of emotive passionate vocals in the dark electronic scene as of late. so i really turned up Trent's voice in the mix, you can really tell he gives a fuck about what he says and that he means it with a lot of intent.. i really love that about his work. and i just couldn't let the remix contest past, even tho i think i missed the due date by a mile :( oh well, if this is just a net thing, then so be it.."

EMS String Machine Samples

via Norman Fay on AH:
"A sample set for Native Instruments "Kontakt 2".

Before I sold my Synthi AKS a couple of years ago, I sampled a bunch of the instrument's raw waveforms to use in my sampler. I didn't bother with any of the stock EMS sounds, as I can easily make them with my modular. I was/am kind of aiming for a virtual polysynthi-type effect.

This is a '70's string ensemble type sound, there are 2 maps used, one is VCO1 sawtooth and VCO2 sawtooth together, one is modulated by VCO 3 triengle at low frequency, the other by the transient generator in looping mode. It covers a good width of keys, and is sampled at either fourths or minor thirds, I forget. The other map is a straight sawtooth. Layered together they sound quite rich, with plenty of movement, but not overpoweringly fat.

10.2 Mb, .rar compressed.

It's a NI Kontakt 2 format set, but the folder has all of the samples in looped .wav format, so they should be importable into any sampler that can deal w/that. Obviously the single VCO sawtooth map could be useful for all kinds of sounds.

Samples were made by me, programming done by me, it's all my work. You can do whatever you want with them, share all you like, but please don't claim that you made them, or sell them on.

ARP 2500 via Reed

via Reed:
"Here's my old Arp cabinet, serial number 70-006.

I bought it in the mid-1990's. The power supply was putting out low voltages, but instead of replacing the power supply, some genius prior owner decided to modify every module in the system to work with the different voltages instead of just replacing the power supply. After my tech person got some of the modules back up to original spec (with a new supply, of course), I used it in conjunction with a 1613 sequencer at home for a while. Neat sound.. not really like a 2600. More boinky-midrangey. I guess the fact that I was using Emu modules to pick up the slack didn't help too much in the boink department.

In 2001, after disbanding the home studio, I took the 2500 to the same tech guy's shop so he could restore the rest of the modules' electronics. At some point in the post-9/11 swirl he & his shop disappeared. Maybe we'll all be reunited at some point, maybe not."

Garden of Memory

via Chris Muir on the Buchla 100e list:

"I will be playing my Buchla 200e in a duo performance with Henry Kaiser on guitar at this year's Garden of Memory event.

The Garden of Memory is a really fun event, held in Oakland every year on summer solstice (6/21/07). It's described as a "walk through concert". There are many performers in many areas of The Chapel of the Chimes, a large columbarium in Oakland.

Having played this a couple times, and attended it a few times, it's a toss-up as to whether it's more fun to play or to attend. I think this year's event has a typically interesting lineup: http://www.gardenofmemory.com"
