MATRIX, please do the DIY community a solid and annotate that this loser shits on fair use and REPEATEDLY violates the terms that the IP owners have laid out.

If every greedy shit for brains did this, we'd have fewer resources in the DIY community.

I'm not saying I master piano synthesis in any way, I'm just showing how simple sync synthesis can be used to try and make that sound.

This movie also showes the easiness of programming the Ion synthesizer."

Long description: The Nord Lead 2X has 4 slots which you can use to load 4 different sounds/programs and thus create a layer i.e. a performance. This video demonstrates Nord Lead 2X when all 4 sounds/programs have been loaded and play simultaneously.

Furthermore, each slot can have a dedicated output (there are 4 audio outputs on the back) so you can manipulate each of the programs separately."

Triadex Muse

"RARE TRIADEX MUSE. What is it? The Net is full of resources. It is a very rare piece of Electronic music history. From Wikipedia: "The Triadex Muse is the first digital musical instrument and was produced in 1972. It was designed by Edward Fredkin and Marvin Minsky at MIT. It is an algorithmic music generator: it uses digital logic circuits to produce a sequence of notes based on the settings of various parameters. It has four small sliders in that control Volume, Tempo, Pitch, and Fine Pitch. It is not known how many were made, but they are considered extremely rare. The Muse is the subject of U. S. Patent 3610801"

"At all events a panel is laid out intelligibly. Unlike Jupiter-8. A glamourous white woman. She can speak only English, but talk intelligibly. As for this, Jupiter-8 is so, but the reason is because it goes along the flow of the signal of the analog synthesizer which the flow of the sound says from left to right. It does not get a hint I want to watch first DX7 and call a parameter to a small window, and to change numerical value. When I play this one, I remember the face whom the Uncle friendly Tom Oberheim smiled." click here for more.

Plan b Model 15 Oscillator

VAC has some words and samples of the Plan b Model 15 OSC up here. The samples of it sound really good.

"It is a good osc, it has a lot of inputs, The SAW and Sine are amazing. This thing is very cutting. I think it’s best suited for sound fx and buchla type sounds. But for me, I needed something that had a little better tracking stability. What else is good about this osc, well for sure, there are a lot of inputs, for fm, sync and cv, so much more than other eurorack vcos. So this is why I think for FX and weird stuff, this is a great VCO. The Fine Tuning knob was a big help as well, I wish more oscillators had this. I give it a 4 out of 5."

Kawai R100

images via this auction

"1985 Kawai R100 drum machine. Forget about the Roland TR 707 or the Oberheim DMX, the Kawai dominates over these machines for several reasons. First and foremost, THE SOUND! This box has the absolute deepest digital 12 bit kicks, toms, and snares I have heard in a drum machine. The sound is very deep and ranges from chesty, impact hits to aggressive and biting high's in the hi hat and cymbal department. Aggressive is probably the best word to describe the overall sound and feel of this machine. And if you are a fan of industrial music look no further. This is the EXACT sound of Ministry, KMFDM, and pretty much the bulk of Wax Trax! Records. I have sat with my copy of Twitch, Land of Rape and Honey, and What Do You Know, Deutschland and have recreated the rhythms and sounds VERBATIM! This is the box that did it. Pretty much every sound was featured on those records and the inexplicable aggressive movement of the machine's sequencer is what makes that industrial feel!

This was recorded with no outboard straight into Ableton Live and using only the R100 internal sequencer to sequence everything including the melodic content. There are no fx added other than a delay on the orchestral hits and Beat Repeat to stutter and filter the beat. It's a quick and rough demonstration with no mixing (the levels are off I know :) ) but demonstrates but a fraction of the feel and the general sound of this box! I used maybe about 5 of the 48 different sounds and two patterns! When you process this box with some proper mic preamps and a slamming compressor see what happens :)"

"awesome little box! one of the most under rated 80s digital drum machines!

they're going for pretty decent prices on ebay, i just won one for about 50$, should get it in a few days and am excited =)

one of the coolest things about the kawai r 100 is that you can tune the drum hits on a step by step basis in your sequence, that can result in wackiness and oddities!

there seem to be tons of cool mods for them too, one of which allows you to switch between 4 different rom sound sets

here's the manual and sorry for replying to something so old hehe =)

Modified Roland SH-101

via this auction

"Roland SH-101 analog synthesizer professionally modified by Diabolical Devices. We have added an audio input for the VCF with a level adjustment. This allows you to input any line level signal and either mix it with synth VCOs or process just input signal (by adjusting source mixer). This is a great feature for this keyboard!! The VCA effects audio input too so you can adjust ADSR settings or pass signal straight using "HOLD" feature. The VCF can be modulated by sh-101s triangle, square, of random LFO, or by the envelope generator. Awsome effects for DJs or for processing drums or anything else. We have aslo added 1/8" outputs for Triangle, Square, and Random modulation which can be used to control external synths....Or trigger circuit-bent sounds in one of our modified Casio SK-1s. This would also go REALLY well with the modified x0xb0x (roland tb-303 clone) that we currently have listed."

If you've been coming to this site for a while you might recognize this as the One Bit Synth, posted back in August of 2005.

"Musician Puts Love for Computer Science into Minimalist Synthesizer

Recycled CD cases become bare-bones music players with the addition of a simple microchip and handful of other components, in a creation by a New York University graduate student in interactive telecommunications. Tristan Perich composes electronic music that can be encoded with just one bit -- compared to the sixteen bits of a CD -- and stores it in the 8 Kilobyte chip at the heart of his low-tech iPods."

This is a prototype equipped with 2 MOS 8580 SID and 1 MidiBox CORE.

Case it's not closed as you can see, buttons are not screwed, connection's cables are temporary.

Melody it's incomplete because the channel R make some other notes that complete the sequence. I've mute it to hear the LFO effect on the channel L.

-- LFO test on channel L --
LFO:
- Positive Sine Wave.
- Depth Pulse Width 80.
- Depth Filter 100.
- Sync Off.
- One Shot On.

ENV:
- EnvMod 5.
This parameter it's very low so you can hear only accented note. The LFO curve increasing the Cutoff will 'show' the non accented note.

FIL:
- Cutoff 0.
- Resonance 240.

In this video you can see also:
- Select Button 5 as Play/Seq.
- Select Button 4 as my Menu Page.
- Rotary Encoder 1 as Cutoff.
- Rotary encoder 2 as Resonance.

Switching off and on the One Shot you can start the LFO curve just one time.

Switching on the Sync flag you can afflict the glided note with the LFO curve. Than switching off the Sync flag you can start just one LFO curve if One flag it's On.

This is an 'illegal' way to use this functions LFO Sync & One shot flags.

Sorry for the poor sound but this come out from the lcd monitors and is recored by a digital photocamera.

Four sound effects that made TV history

You can find the full article from the BBC with video here. Remember to watch the video in full screen mode when you get there by clicking on the box in the bottom right of the player.

"The BBC's Radiophonic Workshop, a pioneering force in sound effects, would have been 50 this month. Ten years after it was disbanded, what remains of its former glory?

Deep in the bowels of BBC Maida Vale studios, behind a door marked B11, is all that's left of an institution in British television history.

A green lampshade, an immersion tank and half a guitar lie forlornly on a shelf, above a couple of old synthesisers in a room full of electrical bric-a-brac.

These are the sad remnants of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, set up 50 years ago to create innovative sound effects and incidental music for radio and television."

RIP Tristram Cary

Tristram Cary passed away this week at the age of 82.
Pictured: In Tristram's studio
http://www.tristramcary.com/
"While serving as a wartime naval radar officer in 1945, he independently conceived the idea of electronic and tape music, and is thus a world pioneer in this field. His contribution to concert and entertainment musical repertoire in every genre from pure electronic music to instrumental solos and orchestral and choral works covers the entire second half of the 20th century, and is now moving actively into the 21st."

via wikipedia:
"Cary was educated at Westminster School in London, England and is the son of a pianist and the novelist, Joyce Cary, author of Mister Johnson. While working as a radar engineer for the Royal Navy during World War II, he independently developed his own conception of electronic and tape music, and is regarded as amongst the earliest pioneers of these musical forms. Following the war he created one of the first electronic music studios, later travelling around Europe to meet the small numbers of other early pioneers of electronic music and composition.
His concert works of note include a Sonata for guitar (1959), Continuum for tape (1969), a cantata Peccata Mundi (1972), Contours and Densities at First Hill for orchestra (1972), a Nonet (1979), String Quartet No. 2 (1985) and The Dancing Girls for orchestra (1991).
Cary is also particularly well known for his film and television music. He has written music for the science fiction television series Doctor Who, as well as the score for the Ealing comedy The Ladykillers (1955). Later film scores included Quatermass and the Pit (1967) and Blood from the Mummy's Tomb (1971), both for Hammer.
Cary was one of the first British composers to work in musique concrète. In 1967 he created the first electronic music studio of the Royal College of Music.

He provided the visual design for the EMS VCS3 synthesizer, the first portable synthesizer, though not the first to be attached to a keyboard, designed by Bob Moog a year later in 1970.
Cary received the 2005 lifetime achievement award from the Adelaide Critics' Circle for his contribution to music in England and Australia."

Pipe smoker, tune writer, gun-for-hire, classical composer, navy man. Role at EMS was as resident composer and artist and as the most musically experienced. Co-designed VCS3. Built wooden cabinet, wrote hand-book. Left to become Professor of Electronic Music at the Royal College of Music. Since became Professor of Music at the University of Adelade. Tiptop Audio Z5000 review by Stretta

You can find the full review on The Stretta Procedure.

The following are a couple of excerpts:
"I spent all of last night playing with it, giggling. Tons of fun. I love putting reverb before the amplifier so the lines you play are smeared, but still gated by the keyboard. A reverb module makes patching far more easy, and opens up creative opportunities you may not have considered before. The Z5000 also includes a handful of other programs like chorus, flanging, but the real focus is on various reverbs. Now I really want the Plan B Model 40 Elf-series headphone preamp - everything is contained in the modular case!"

"When you get a new module, your old instrument is entirely new again. This is the really cool thing about modulars, and a concept I'm dying to exploit in software. You want to try the module with everything else you already have. It makes the entire system more powerful. You're not just buying a single new module, you're gaining what that module can do, in interaction with everything else in the system."

It's also typically much cheaper to pick up a new module vs. a new synth if you need a quick GAS fix.
