MATRIXSYNTH NAMM 2013: Moon Modular at the Noisebug Booth

Uploaded on Jan 30, 2013 matrixsynth·250 videos

Gert of Moon Modular gives us a demo of their modular system focusing on the 506 Filter Modifier at the Noisebug NAMM Booth.  The brassy lead sound you hear in the background is coming from another booth, but oddly fits.  Moon follows the 5U  synthesizers.com/ Moog modular format.

via Moon Modular: "The M 506 MODIFIER MODULE is a combination of a voltage controlled amplifier connected in series. The vcf is a ladder type lowpass filter featuring switchable slopes (12/18/24 dB/oct) and voltage controllable regeneration. In addition to the manual frequency and resonance dials there are three attenuated control voltage inputs for filter cutoff frequency (bipolar), resonance and amplifier gain. The via bypass switch routes a fixed control voltage to the amplifier to keep it 'open' and ease control while working on a filter patch."

See the Moon Modular website for additional details on the modules pictured below.

"If you've ever wondered, wonder no more: Craig Anderton started at one end of the building and kept walking until he reached the other end - through the Arena, the Halls A, B, C, and D - with the camera rolling the whole time. What about Hall E? You'll need to see the "Hall E Crawl" video with Mats Nermark for that one. Oh, and to simulate the true NAMM experience, turn up your speakers as loud as they'll go."

NAMM 2013: Korg MS-20 MINI Audio Line Level Recording by INHALT

Published on Jan 30, 2013 INHALTVIDEO·12 videos

"At Winter NAMM 2013 we were very privileged to have the opportunity to play the new Korg MS-20 MINI. We use an original Korg MS-20 with the Korg 35 filters and were very pleasantly surprised just how close this new MS-20 sounds to the original.

This recording was made with a Zoom H4N portable recorder and we took the direct line output of the MS-20 into the Zoom's line input. It was a small miracle we were able to get a recording in as the show floor was packed and hundreds of people stopped by to check out the new MS-20.

TT-303 Bass Bot Comparison to Original TB-303 by Devil Fish's Robin Whittle

The following is via Robin Whittle, creator of the renown Devil Fish mods for the original TB-303. Robin plans to make the Devil Fish Mods available for the TT-303 Bass Bot as well.

"I have done a preliminary circuit tracing of most of the Bass Bot and compared its function and signals with those of the TB-303.

The Bass Bot is not claimed to be a replica of the TB-303 - it just looks that way. Please note that what I wrote relates to a single machine from the December production batch. There is a new batch just about to be made and I understand that there are some hardware and firmware changes - but I don't know what they are. What I wrote here may be updated in the future, may not be complete or accurate, and may not reflect the behavior of all Bass Bots: http://www.firstpr.com.au/rwi/dfish/TT-303/#diffs (Update: see the link for additional assessments added after this post)

The Bass Bot does everything a TB-303 does except:

It does not receive Roland/DIN Sync.

Although the right-most button is labeled "Tap" as part of replicating the design of the TB-303's front panel, there is no Tap entry mode in the TT-303's sequencer.

The synthesiser circuitry is functionally identical to that of a TB-303 except (based on our experience with one unit sent to us in December 2012):

Maximum Env Mod is about 37% stronger.

Accent Sweep via the Resonance Pot is about 33% stronger.

The VCA is a BA6110, which is a modern, enhanced, version of the original and now unobtainable BA662. The BA6110 has linearizing diodes, which are not used, so it behaves much like a BA662. The control current to the VCA is approximately doubled and the load resistor for the VCA is approximately halved. The signal level is about the same, but these changes reduce the VCA's background noise significantly.

The CV Out range is 1.333 volts for lowest C to 5.333 volts for the highest C in a Pattern's 3 octave range, when the Pattern is transposed up 1 octave. In the TB-303, this 4 octave range is 1.0 to 5.0 volts.

The exact response curve of the Resonance Pot is a 'log' curve at both the anti-clockwise and the clockwise ends. This is the same as with the replacement Resonance pots we have been installing in the Devil Fish for several years. The TB-303's Resonance pot has a "log" (AKA "audio taper") response curve. This difference only affects what knob position produces a given sound, not the range of sounds which are available.

The circuitry is in general identical - except of course that different transistor and IC types are used. I didn't find any evidence that these differences result in a different sound.

I will await a machine from the new production batch before I do the detailed work for the forthcoming Devil Fish modifications. Although the modifications will be identical or similar in principle to those for the TB-303, the new machine has totally different component numbering, different layout, and almost all the components are surface mount. It will be a while before I finalize the modifications.

I have added the Swedish distributor Jam.se to the above page."

Update: you'll find updates to Robin's assessments on his TT-303 page here.

Ebay Scam Warning

Just a heads up but there have been a run of recent eBay scam listings where the seller asks you to contact them offline via an email address for a low Buy It Now price.  Don't fall for it.  If you buy on eBay, buy on eBay only.  If you do not go through the eBay system you will not be eligible for their buyer protection should you get scammed.  I don't want to become the eBay police, but this particular scammer appears to be posting daily, targeting synths, with what appears to be hijacked accounts with tons of positive feedback.  If you look on the right of the site here on MATRIXSYNTH you will find a MORE STUFF section just under the Artists & More banner with links for eBay US, UK and DE. I do my best to filter out scammers and these links are tailored for synths, so use them, but of course I can't promise to filter all scammers as I can only filter them after I catch them.  As always be smart and trust no one.  If you buy off of eBay go through their system for the purchase and all communication (eBay will review all communication in the case of a dispute).  If something goes south you should have eBay buyer protection on your side.

"LELL were the first normal stompboxes made in Russia. They had normal guitar jacks and even a 9-volt socket - same format as BOSS pedals. The footswitch pad reveals a battery cavity underneath.
The company still exists! It's website for some unknown reason claims the company was established in 1992. But look at the pictures - we've got a proof it was active in the 80's. The headquaters is located in Moscow, on the Lower Krasnoselskaja street. 'Digital Delay' in Russian goes like 'Cifrovaja Zaderjka', and while in Russian 'CZ' makes sence, it was lost when it was transferred to another language. In fact, there was no chance to convert it into 'DD' (digital delay) since the DD pedal already exists - it's 'Drive/Distortion'."

mfb drum99 ser#1 unboxing and jam

Published on Jan 30, 2013 FSK1138·163 videos

"mfb drum99 ser# 1 (discontinued)

the drum-99 module is an audio-mixer that has been designed for the modules of the mfb-drum series but also for usage with other manufacturer's modules. when using multiple drum-modules in a modular system, the following processing stages like filters or vcas often lack enough audio inputs. to route a complete drum-set through a filter, a separate mixer like the drum-99 comes handy.

drum-99 offers five monaural inputs with individual level control. tiny trim-controls are used to set the channel panorama position for the internal stereo-bus.

a fixed level stereo-input can accommodate the signal of one or more additional drum-99 modules. these inputs can also be used with the drum-06 module (tom tom) that also offers a stereo-output.

all five mono signals and the stereo-input are routed to the stereo-output that can be connected to two vcas, filters or other sound manipulating devices. the output may also be used to connect the drum-99 to a mixing-console or audio-interface.

the stereo-output is designed for a possible summing with additional stereo-outputs.

the module has a width of 60 mm (12ph)"

The keyboard doesn't track on this one for some reason.

via the listing: "The unit turns on and makes sound but its only producing the same sound on all the keys. Even if you press different keys, they only produce the same single pitched tone. All the keys appear to be responding however.

So below are the list of functions that I was able to test and know that are working/responding.
- VCO, SUB OSC, NOISE
- All three WAVEFORMS and PWM slider.
- ENV-1
- VCA HOLD
- CUTOFF FREQ and RESONANCE
- NOISE WHITE / PINK
- HPF CUTOFF FREQ slider

These above seems fine, but everything else was basically unable to be tested and/or don't know if they work."
