Synthesizer archeology - DIY Modular from early 2000.

video upload by LARIX ELEKTRO

"Too big for live performances, it finally serves me in the studio for a strange and very personal project: De Secretis naturae.

It's a series of tracks built only using this synthesizer and a few other tools, all homemade.
The goal is to recreate natural environments, using the synthetic sounds produced with my machines.
A kind of fake field recording.

The last chapter, of the 2 tracks, has just been released:

That's it, this musical release was an opportunity to present this old pre-LE modular…
More info about the synth and the creative process here:

Synthesizer archeology - visual design

video upload by LARIX ELEKTRO

"Just a small video to show the process of making the album cover:
linocut.

Why talk about it on a eurorack manufacturer's channel ?
Well, just for fun
And because LARIX ELEKTRO is a 'one mane' company and it's boring to split all my projects into too much channels/pseudo, etc...
Maybe it's interesting to know what this guy is doing behind LE ?"

MOTM / Synthesis Technology's Paul Schreiber Has Passed Away

Paul Schreiber at CONTROL in 2018

It has come to my attention that Paul Schreiber has passed away.

Pictured: Paul Schreiber at the 2006 NAMM show. Top from this previous post (pic by fr1zz), and bottom from this post (pic by Synthtopia) - this is the first image of Paul on the site. There is one comment in that post: "He's a good guy." Indeed.

Readers of the site should be familiar with his work. He was the man behind MOTM and Synthesis Technology.

To say Paul was one of the greats to influence the synth community would be an understatement. He was pivital to the rebirth of modular synthesizers. He started when modular as we know it today was in its infancy, as one of a very small group of large format DIY modular manufacturers along with Blacet, Modcan, Cynthia, Wiard, Oakley, STG, Catgirl/CGS, Tellun/Lower West Side Studio YuSynth, Jurgen Haible, and of course DIY staples like Thomas Henry/ MFOS, Ray Wilson and PAiA (see this post for some modular formats back in 2007). I focused mainly on those offering DIY. There were other manufacturers including Synthesizers.com, Club of the Knobs, MOS-LAB, Moon Modular, MacBeth, CMS, and more. Feel free to mention others in the comments. This post is about Paul, but I think it's important to reflect on some of the large format modular manufactures he was amongst at the time.

Paul created the MOTM format of 5U modules in 1998. MOTM stood for Module of the Month offering monthly DIY kits. From Wikipedia: "MOTM was created by Paul Schreiber in 1998. The system was created in part due to the renewed interest in large-format analog modular systems that occurred in the late 1990s. Between 1998 and 2021, over 8000 modules were sold. The company, Synthesis Technology, also offered a limited number of modules in Eurorack[2] and Frac[3] format."

He was also helped design the Moog/Realistic MG-1. From Wikipedia: "In 1980, Moog Music was seeking to contract manufacture a mass-marketable synthesizer which could be sold via a large retailer. Moog representatives secured an appointment at the Radio Shack corporate offices for a 5-minute demonstration. Radio Shack approved the concept, and Paul Schreiber (then employed by Tandy Systems Development) worked together with Moog on the synthesizer's design to achieve Radio Shack's price requirements.[2][3]"

He later joined the eurorack scene with Synthesis Technology branded modules. FYI, his site for MOTM was always http://www.synthtech.com/, short for Synthesis Technology. The first post to mention Paul and MOTM was posted just under twenty years ago here on MATRIXSYNTH back on August 26, 2005. If you click through you will see it was a post announcing the MOTM/synthtech.com site was going down for the weekend. He announced he was retiring from the synthesizer business in August of 2023.

I beleive the first synthtech eurorack module was the MOTM E340 Cloud Generator. The first demos were posted on July 14, 2009, followed by a mockup of the front panel on July 20. The first post to mention Synthesis Technology was an Epic Son track by John L Rice in August of 2011. Since then there has been approximately 845 posts to feature MOTM, and at least 398 Synthtech.

You can find a number of interviews with Paul in previous posts here.

It's worth repeating, Paul Schreiber was one of the key figures that brought modular back to the masses. He was both respected and loved by the synth community. It's impossible to overstate his influence. He will be missed.

The following are the first the last video interviews with Paul to be featured on the site:

The SynthSummitShow Episode 2: Paul Schreiber (Synthesis Technology) and A.Dapt (music producer) ...

Streamed live on Oct 2, 2015 Flux302 of Fluxwithit.com. Details previously posted here.

SysEx Dumpster - Episode 44 - a conversation with Paul Schreiber
video upload by Sysex Dumpster on Jul 30, 2023. Details previously posted here.

The first videos to feature Paul presenting a module was back on January 3, 2010, and the first interview on SoundCloud in 2013, and he was of course featured in the modular documentary film I Dream of Wires.

RS060 Dr Böhm Dynamic 12/24 (Orla DSE): German EFF EHM

video upload by rejected synths

"Talking synths from Germany, quite a few companies come to mind: Waldorf, Doepfer or Vermona are popular ones still around and there are a lot more, some of them long gone like pioneering PPG. One company that hardly ever makes the list is Dr Böhm Organ. This might be down to the fact that Böhm weren’t exactly a company focused on synths at all but rather one that offered DIY kits for people to build themselves electronic organs.

Strictly speaking these organs were ‘synths’ too and when the 80s arrived, Böhm, just like companies like Sequential, Roland or Yamaha, started to utilize digital control and later digital synthesis in their ‘synths’ too, albeit utilizing interfaces more akin to traditional organs.

One other similarity to ‘real’ synth companies was that they also started to offer expander modules, that could be controlled by midi, expanding the variety of sounds while at the same time saving on space (no keyboard) and costs.

This is where today’s synth comes from. The Dynamic 12/24 was meant as an affordable way for Böhm’s customers of home owners and entertainers to expand their setup with some more organ but also other sounds like strings, e-pianos and some 80s-ish synth staples.

The technology used was taken from one of it’s electronic organs and while clearly trying to hide it (even going as far as filing the markings off the ICs) it was Yamaha FM Chips doing Yamaha sounding 4OP FM. The good thing is of course, that this is actually a great basis for a very wide range of sounds, especially as Böhm was kind enough to add user memory to enable creation and saving of your own patches. Also, editing can be done via midi and there are editors available too. What makes the 12/24 stand out from the crowd of 4 OP modules most though is the unique Böhm analog bucket brigade delay style ensemble effect, that ‘warms’ the FM sound.

Last but not least, the Dynamic 12/24s seem to be widely available and dirt cheap too, at least here in and around Germany. So grab one before they become cool, or anyone finds out they are actually the same as the Orla DSE, a synth that has been used by a guy that goes by the name of Richard David James…"

Olivella SIGNOS + Sport Modulator 2 = Feedback!

SIGNOS is an incredibly versatile dual channel utility and waveshaper module for CV and audio processing in just 8HP.

Both X and Y channels feature a classic / unipolar VCA with separate normal and inverted outputs, a polarizer / four-quadrant multiplier / bipolar VCA, a -5V to +5V manual offset voltage that gets summed with their respective channel's bipolar VCA outputs and a red/green LED indicator for this output. The offset voltage can be used on its own if no input signal is present.

X and Y sums of their bipolar VCAs output + offset (X+offset and Y+offset) are then feeded to these logic and waveshaper circuits:

AND analog logic gate: outputs the minimum of X+offset and Y+offset.
OR analog logic gate: outputs the maximum of X+offset and Y+offset.
MOD waveshaper: represents the mathematical modulo operation as a CV modulator and waveshaper, with X+offset and Y+offset affecting different parts of this circuit.
SHIFT waveshaper: originally designed to pitch-shift sawtooth waves up an octave, it can also do interesting wave-mangling to all kinds of signals.

All of the above are just the module’s building blocks, only the tip of the iceberg of what SIGNOS can do. It naturally lends itself to feedback patching techniques within itself and/or other modules, complex waveshaping, external signal processing and more. The limits of what SIGNOS can do are completely up to you.

Phantasmal Force micro MIDI controller + Bastl Kastle Drum & 1010music lemondrop bells in locomotion

video upload by Arman Bohn

"Phantasmal Force micro MIDI controller with the @1010_music lemondrop and the @bastlinstruments Kastl drum. The Kastl kicks it off with a little loop (just started learning this little guy). The Phantasmal Force is sending chords to the lemondrop. The chords were generated randomly by the Phantasmal Force and I’m just noodling around with them. In chord mode, the knob raises or lowers the chord on the button up to one octave. Each button can send a different three note chord. The notes of the chord are adjustable, so you can make your own chords. Still working on tuning the randomness of the chords to sound more musical … #diy #synth #midicontroller #granularsynthesis #tinysynth #tinystudio #jamuary2023"

LXR by Erica Synths x Sonic Potions

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"Time for a 'not so deep' dive into the LXR, but with really cool results. I've linked a video manual by Synth DIY Guy who went through all settings because I don't have the patience for walkthroughs and demos. But, wow, this drum synth is something else. When I started this video I assumed it was analog but it's certainly digital and it's a masterpiece. The point is, it doesn't sound digital unless you set the bit crusher to work.
The presets are clearly targeted to the loud and gritty genres of electronic music, but in its core, it's a six voice synth that can make amazing sounds for any genre, including ambient. I am not sure if I can post something before Christmas, so I wish you a great holiday season and I'll definitely see you again in 2023."

Ghost - Endorphin.es and Andrew Huang New FX module - Sonic Lab Review

video upload by sonicstate

"Collabs are all the rage these days, and this one comes from a meeting of Endorphin.es and massive Youtuber/Producer Andrew Huang. Ghost is a multi-function effects and processing module, with delay, filtering, reverb, sidechaining and distortion, but not necessarily in that order - its, fluid due to some nifty DSP work from Endorphin.es.

Modular performer and producer, MATTHS (aka Matt Hodson) takes a look."
