High on Modulation: Programming Classic 80s Brass Sounds, Synthesis as a Folk Art, and More
video upload by Keith Crosley
"Let's get inspired by vintage VHS synth nerdery and dig into some modulation mayhem! I accidentally make a reaction video to a wonderfully unhinged 80s Steve Porcaro synth-programming tape, explain Korg multi/poly modulation (hey there @robst247 ), and put some of Steve's ideas into action with a classic Toto-style “Africa” brass with Arturia Pure LoFi. I also talk about how I think about synthesizer programming, answer the question, “What is synthesis?” and talk about synth programming as a folk art. So grab a Coke (or other stimulant of choice) and join me for a MODULATION-A-GO-GO episode of your sniff favorite talky synthesizer content show!"
You can find wavetables and additional resources by Keith Crosley available at https://www.wavetables.lol.

Synthesizing waveforms with a frequency divider - a sequel
video upload by organfairy
"I show how it sounds at 4:17 and play it with a keyboard at 5:50
Winter is getting closer so this is the time of year when I start building things. The first of my projects is a revisit to an old idea of synthesizing waveforms with a frequency divider. This time the waveform in question is a sine wave and some other waveforms derived from it.
The old idea is here: • Synthesizing waveforms with a frequency di... [below]
The project is quite a bit more complicated than the previous 'digital' waveform synthesizer as the sine wave is very..... well....wavy, as there are no straight lines like there is in the triangle and sawtooth waves. Therefore I had to take a different approach using a couple of 74LS138 3-8 decoders and an awfull lot of resistors.
The music is my attempt at playing something relaxing on my Wersi Prisma DX-5 organ."
Synthesizing waveforms with a frequency divider
video upload 8 years ago by organfairy
"The demo starts at 4:15.
The normal approach to generating waveforms is to start with a sawtooth wave and then fold it into a triangle wave and schmitt trigger it into a square wave. But it is also possible to synthesize the waveforms by means of a frequency divider and some logic gates. Off course the generated waveforms will be somewhat 'edgy' but that can probably be filtered out and some people might even find it usefull.
The music is something I made back in 2005 on the homemade synthesizers I had then. It's not the best piece I have made but I am still willing to take responsability for it :-)"

New Binary Synth Allows You to Play Binary Code Within Any Given File
video upload by Max Alyokhin
This should go without saying, but don't drop any sensitive, private, or personal files.
"Demo: https://bs.stranno.su
Source code and application principle: https://github.com/MaxAlyokhin/binary...
A web-synthesizer that generates sound from the binary code of any files. It can synthesize sound directly in the browser, or be a generator of MIDI messages to external devices or DAWs, turning any file into a score. All the application code is written in Javascript and along with everything you need is packed into a single .html file of about 750kb. The synthesizer doesn't need internet, it can be downloaded and run locally on any device with a browser.

All data on any computer or smartphone is in the form of files. The contents of these files are ultimately just zeros and ones. And these zeros and ones are basically all the same, so we need an interpreter to extract meaning from these texts. Basically, the file format (.mp3, .docx, etc.) is just a pointer to which interpreter we need to pass the text in order to extract meaning from it.
But what if the file format and the interpreter don't match? In the case of musical experimentation, there have been earlier attempts, for example, to "play" a file through an audio editor, which expectedly produced mostly glitch and noise; it might be more interesting from a conceptual than a musical point of view.
We could go further and write our own interpreter that would look at the files without regard to format, use its own "manner of reading" the original zeros and ones, and on that basis provide a complete system for controlled synthesis of sounds.
The tool, called Binary synth, is available at: https://bs.stranno.su.
The application is a web synthesizer that runs in the browser and is written in Javascript. All the application code along with everything needed is packed into a single .html file of about 750kb.

Mark Twain on the Tellharmonium
This one was spotted and sent in by Gerard Pardeilhan.
Note that's not Mark Twain in the image as he was much older in 1907 as pictured here. The image appears to be "Musician playing at the Telharmonic Hall. The photograph originally appeared in Gunther’s Magazine, June 1907. Courtesy Reynold Weidenaar" according to Cabinet Magazine.
From the article on Cabinet Magazine:
"'The trouble about these beautiful, novel things is that they interfere so with one’s arrangements. Every time I see or hear a new wonder like this I have to postpone my death right off. I couldn’t possibly leave the world until I have heard this again and again.' —Mark Twain
The new wonder that Mark Twain described was the Telharmonium, a pioneering and immensely ambitious electrical musical instrument, the first to synthesize sounds from electrically generated waves. Conceived in the early 1890s by Thaddeus Cahill—whose original name for his invention was the Dynamophone—the instrument produced sound with dynamos that generated alternating currents. Because the sound was generated electrically, it was possible not only to synthesize sound but also to transmit it over telephone lines, making it possible to provide music to thousands of hotels, restaurants, and home subscribers."
I did a quick search for the quote and also found the following from The New York Times, December 23, 1906 on twainquotes.com via The New York Times.
---
TWAIN AND THE TELEPHONE
He Hears the Telharmonium and Incidentally Tells a Story.
"The trouble with these beautiful, novel things is that they interfere so with one's arrangements. Every time I see or hear a new wonder like this I have to postpone my death right off. I couldn't possibly leave the world until I have heard this again and again."
Mark Twain said this as he lounged on the keyboard dais in the telharmonium music room in upper Broadway, swinging his legs, yesterday afternoon. The instrument has just played the "Lohengrin Wedding March" for him.
"You see, I read about this in THE NEW YORK TIMES last Sunday, and I wanted to hear it. If a great Princess marries, what is to hinder all the lamps along the streets on her wedding night playing that march together? Or, if a great man should die -- I, for example -- they could all be tuned up for a dirge."
"Of course, I know that it is intended to deliver music all over the town through the telephone, but that hardly appeals as much as it might to a man who for years, because of his addiction to strong language, has tried to conceal his telephone number, just like a chauffeur running away after an accident.
"When I lived up in Hartford, I was the very first man, in that part of New England at least, to put in a telephone --, but it was constantly getting me into trouble because of the things I said carelessly. And the family were all so thoughtless. One day when I was in the garden, fifty feet from the house, somebody on the long distance wire who was publishing a story of mine, wanted to get the title.
"Well, the title was the first sentence, "Tell him to go to hell." Before my daughter got it through the wire and through him there was a perfect eruption of profanity in that region. All New England seemed to be listening in, and each time my daughter repeated it she did so with rising emphasis. It was awful. I broke into a cold perspiration, and while the neighborhood rang with it, rushed in and implored her to desist. But she would have the last word, and it was "hell," sure enough, every time.
"Soon after I moved to New York; perhaps that had something to do with my moving. When I got there and asked for a fire-proof telephone, the company sent up a man to me. I opened up all my troubles to him, but he laughed and said it was all right in New York. There was a clause in their contract, he said, allowing every subscriber to talk in his native tongue, and of course they would not make an exception against me. That clause has been a godsend to me."

Corsynth Drum Modules + Transistor Mixer
video upload by NOISEBUG
"Corsynth - Massive Drums + Harmonic Mixer
The Corsynth drum collection for MU format modular sounds nothing short of massive! Especially when all drums are patched into the Moog-Style C111 mixer. Feed the mix back into itself and quickly witness the clean analog saturation get completely destroyed (in a harmonically satisfying kind of way)
The Corsynth drum modules are available now at Noisebug.
The DR-01 Bass Drum is the first of a new series of Corsynth modules dedicated to analog drum synthesis and it’s also the first module of this kind commercially available in MU format. Create a drum sounds from scratch using a modular synthesizer is always time and resourcing consuming. With the DR-01 you will save a lot of space, money and modules that can be used for other purposes. The DR-01 has all you need to create bass drums , toms a many other percussive sounds in just one single space. And thanks to the Tune CV input is even possible to use the DR-01 to create bass lines. Punchy techno drums, industrial drums, drum sounds of the firsts analog drum machines, FM sounds... With the DR-01 is really easy to get the sounds that you need at every moment. All the parameters in the module have been carefully chosen to be used in a drum synthesis context (envelope times, oscillator frequencies, oscillator waveform etc ). These are the DR-01 Bass Drum main features:
* A voltage controlled oscillator with dedicated CV input for tuning.
* A voltage controlled timbre circuit.
* A dedicated tune modulation envelope.
* An amplitude envelope with three different settings for the attack time.
It’s time to add drum sounds to your synth sequences! .
The DR-02 Snare Drum is the second module in the DR series dedicated to analog drum synthesis. This module is designed to synthesize electronic snare drum sounds of any kind. From the classic preset drum machines from the 70s to TR-XXX, electro snares, zaps... But thanks to its 12 knobs and 3 CV inputs the DR-02 Snare Drum can synthesize much more than snare drums, sounds like hit-hats, toms, cymbals , congas, FXs are also possible and even it can be used as an oscillator. The DR-02 is composed for two different sections , Head and Snare each of them with its own volume control. The Head section has two voltage controlled oscillators with a fixed frequency interval between them. One modulation envelope to modulate the oscillators tuning and one VCA with an AD envelope to control de decay of the snare head. The Snare section is composed by a noise generator , two voltage controlled filters connected in series ( one 12db resonant high pass filter and one 6db non- resonant low pass filter). One envelope to modulate the high pass filter cutoff frequency and one VCA with an AD envelope to control de decay of the snare.
The DR-03 Hi-Hats / Metal is the third module in the DR series dedicated to analog drum synthesis. It is designed to synthesize Hi-Hats and metal percussion like cowbells or cymbals and even FX. Three different voices are available at the same time Closed Hi-hat, Open Hi-hat and Metal plus a Hi-Hat mixed output .
Hi-Hats To synthesize a Hi-Hat there is a key element that defines the final result, the primary sound used to create it. The DR-03 has three possible sound sources , a white noise generator, a mix of six square wave oscillators and a mix of ring modulated square wave oscillators. These three sound sources, together with the VC Band Pass filter and the Low Pass Filter allow the DR-03 to create a wide range of hi-hat sounds. Another interesting feature is that the Open Hi-hat decay time is voltage controlled and it can be triggered independently or conditioned to the Closed Hi-hat. Metal The Metal sound is created using two ring modulated square wave oscillators and a VC Band Pass Filter. The frequency of one oscillator can be manually controlled and the other one has a fixed frequency. The variable oscillator can modulate the cutoff of the BPF to create metallic FM sounds.

Introducing Objekt Modeling Synthesizer for Reason!
video upload by Reason Studios
"Synthesize reality with Objekt, a physical modeling synth for new and unique acoustic sounds. Discover the character of organic instruments and real-world materials. Dynamic, playable, and easily customizable.
Producers and beat makers are on the hunt for new sounds with an acoustic flavor. Sounds that can’t be easily duplicated by just any plugins or samples. That’s why Objekt doesn’t play back pre-recorded instruments, it synthesizes them.
Explore hundreds of patches ranging from bells, mallets, percussion, stringed instruments and more. Move any parameter to see what happens. Where you end up might sound familiar or like an imaginary instrument that doesn’t exist. Until now."
Learn Physical Modeling Synthesis with Objekt from Reason Studios
video upload by Reason Studios
"Objekt Modeling Synthesizer for Reason is a whole new type of synthesis for most people but that's why we packed it into the form factor that would be both easiest to learn and most powerful when you've got it down — a classic Reason Rack synth.
In this deep dive, Ryan will show you how to get started with physical modeling synthesis and how you can either build sounds from scratch if you're a sound designer or modify existing sounds in entirely new ways if you're a musician looking to get inspired.
Contents of this video:
0:00 - Introduction
1:53 - Real world sounds
3:16 - Basic Objekt patch
7:12 - Objekt’s mixer
8:38 - Exciter Impact section
13:55 - Exciter Noise section

Objekt is an open-ended physical modeling synthesizer, meaning it models the properties of acoustic instruments and gives you control over those as parameters. Instead of choosing between pre-made options, it opens the hood to the inner workings of physical modeling synthesis so that you can experiment and approach it like what it really is: a synthesizer.
At the heart of Objekt are three resonating objects, think of them like the instrument itself, with in-depth control to create anything from a string or bell to a skin or something yet unheard. The instrument is then set in motion by the Exciter section. From the short impact of a stick to a wash of noisy static, the Exciter lets you play the instrument in dynamic and wonderful ways. Tweak the sound to suit your needs or invent entirely new instruments with just a few parameter changes. Objekt generates all sound in real time without relying on pre-recorded samples which makes it dynamic, playable, and easily customizable—but also fast and lightweight.
Need somewhere to start? Explore over 500 expertly crafted patches covering a wide range of sounds. Objekt excels at both realistic reproductions and new imaginary instruments that doesn’t exist. Until now. Move any parameter to see what happens. Use the powerful randomizer to slightly alter a patch or morph it to a brand new direction. Start from scratch and see where you end up. Objekt’s designed to be explored on your terms.
Objekt is perfectly integrated into the Reason Rack workflow with the familiar browser, native undo, CV and audio cables, and more. You can even connect any audio signal to the External Input and use any sound to excite the instrument’s resonators to incredible effect, think of it like an “acoustic vocoder”.

"Next-level synthesizer voice with a novel engine for additive wavetable synthesis
Warp uses a novel hybrid engine that combines the best of additive and wavetable synthesis. With the integrated editor you can playfully draw your own frequency spectra like on a canvas into the colorful XY sound palette. Warp is a feature-rich powerhouse that lets you create all kinds of sounds, from glassy clean to crunchy crunch. Thanks to expressive macro tone controls, extreme morphs are possible in a single pot turn. Wednesday, March 29, 2023
