New Synth Gear and Makers in January 2015

After this year's massive New Years post, I thought it might be interesting to see how many new makers and new gear announcements we received in a single month.

This may or may not become a monthly theme on the site depending on interest.  If you think it's worth while, leave a comment.

At a high level we had 12 new makers, one new old maker previously never featured on the site, and a whopping 193 new synth related products. Check out the module list below.  The list is a combination of what was either announced or released this month.

The list in order of appearance:

OP-1 Song: Late Night and Lo-Fi

Published on Feb 1, 2015 djthomaswhite

"Demo of a 4-track song I wrote after coming back from NAMM 2015 where I got to hang out with the Teenage Engineering team and chat on and on about my beloved OP-1 and what the future holds for Teenage Engineering. I came home inspired, wiped my OP-1 and wrote this little number. I hope you enjoy it. I added some brief discussion about how I organize my parts on the OP-1 tape at the end of the video. Happy music making!"

Eventide H3500 factory synthesizer presets

"Aside from being a world class studio staple, effects processor, sampler, pitch/time compander, the H3500 is also a synthesizer. Here are some examples of its synthesis capabilities. With the exception of the String Modeller example, all other examples are completely synthesized within the unit. The String Modeller requires an external exciter/impulse in order to produce sound."

And some pics of an H35000 for context via this auction. Note this is not the one in the demos above. Just wanted to capture what it looks like in this post as they do not come up often. This is the first post to feature images and direct samples of one.

This was done by using the Q960 Sequencer to produce note voltages to be feed to the Q171 Quantizer and then output from the MIDI Out port on the Q172 Quantizer Aid module. Quantization is selected on/off per stage by the Q963 Trigger Bus."

Atlanta Mind Meld 1_31_15

via cnbirk

"Thought I'd share the pictures of the first Atlanta Mind Meld with you. It was quite a great performance concept: 4 artists (Sonny Hancock, Tay0, Reklein and Zach Hollback) were each performing short pieces about 10 minutes long before handing off to the next performer. It worked out really well, as the there was always a great deal of movement and variety throughout the 4 hours of the event. It was possibly one of the best hardware electronic music performances that I have ever seen. Below are some impressions from the evening."

ANTONELLI VINTAGE ORGAN with Rhythm Section

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

I normally skip home organs, but I thought this one was interesting enough to post and I wanted to capture it before id disappeared.  Curious if it's all analog, digital or a mix.  If you know, feel free to comment.  As you can see there is a rhythm section.  If you take a look at the Antonelli channel label at the bottom of this post you will see a few other keyboards the company made including an actual synth.  It's interesting to think about the technology used at the time and what might have crossed over to their other designs.  It's also fascinating to think about what the lesser known manufacturers in the synth world made throughout the years.

"This Roland Jupiter 6 is for sale. All voices, knobs and sliders working... a beautiful synth and rare to find in this condition. Located in Gold Coast , Queensland, Australia. Contact me for more info or to make an offer.

I used only the Jupiter 6 (except kick and snare drum) to recreate this classic track from Yazoo. The original was done by Vince Clarke using a SCI Pro-One but I think the JP6 gets pretty close."

Yamaha DX-5 with African Zebra Wood

"Experience the same vintage FM synthesis as it's bigger brother the DX-1 at a third of the cost. This unit has been redesigned all the way around with african zebra wood for an exotic look and feel, it is gorgeous and fully functional. The DX-5 sound engine is identical to the DX1, with its dual 6-operator FM synth the DX5 is like having two DX7 synthesizers in one. The DX5 has 64 performance memories which can be loaded or saved to cartridge, while the DX7 has only one manual performance memory. This improves the versatility for live performance and makes excellent use of the dual engines. The DX7 style membrane buttons have been replaced with actual push-buttons with a backlit dual line display. For performances, the DX5 shares the DX1's bitimbric ability to play two patches from memory (Channel A and B) with the keyboard in layer or split mode. Comes loaded with Yamaha patches specifically designed for the DX-1/DX5. This unit is in near mint condition, what little scratches it had were retouched with a matching metallic paint and the entire panel re-coated for brilliance and protection."

Roland JD-Xi Synthesizer - Building a Track From Scratch

Published on Jan 27, 2015 Mark Watson

"I had the pleasure of being one of the first people to get theirhands on the new Roland JD-Xi synthesizer. This synth combines analog and digital synth sounds and is one, fun instrument.

Within minutes I had written a track from scratch which is so easy to do with the synth, drums and four-track pattern sequencer on the JD-Xi. This video breaks down each part and goes through some of the features I used in putting it all together.

Enjoy!"
