Akai MPC 1000 - Tutorial Part 7 - Controlling a Modular Synthesizer - Midiverse - TV - MVM #112

Published on Apr 23, 2018 Midiverse - TV

"What's up everybody? Welcome to Midiverse - TV! Today we're going to talk about using the Akai MPC1000 with a Modular Synthesizer.

Using the assignable outputs of the MPC we're able to trigger the drum modules that are in the rack. So we can play the drum modules in real time using the pads, as well recording MIDI sequences, so we can loop our drum parts.

Then we're using a MIDI to Control Voltage converter, which gives us four channels of CV and Gate outputs for use with the Modular Synthesizer.

Also remember we post a new video every Monday.

Phase modulation of the Analog Devices AD9833 DDS

Published on Apr 23, 2018 DutchBigEd

"This is a short demo of phase modulation of the Analog Devices AD9833 DDS chip with an Arduino (Atmega328p).
First part is where the hard sync input frequency is varied, than the phase of the hard sync is modulated en than the frequentie of the ad9833 is modulated.

The last part all three variables are modulated.

The sync input is PD2 (INT0), the phase input is ADC0 (PC0) and the Frequency input to control the AD9833 is ADC1 (PC1)."

Note this is the first post to feature the Analog Devices AD9833 DDS chip. You can find previous DIY videos from DutchBigEd here.

via Analog Devices:

"The AD9833 is a low power, programmable waveform generator capable of producing sine, triangular, and square wave outputs. Waveform generation is required in various types of sensing, actuation, and time domain reflectometry (TDR) applications. The output frequency and phase are software programmable, allowing easy tuning. No external components are needed. The frequency registers are 28 bits; with a 25 MHz clock rate, resolution of 0.1 Hz can be achieved. Similarly, with a 1 MHz clock rate, the AD9833 can be tuned to 0.004 Hz resolution.

The AD9833 is written to via a 3-wire serial interface. This serial interface operates at clock rates up to 40 MHz and is compatible with DSP and microcontroller standards. The device operates with a power supply from 2.3 V to 5.5 V.

The AD9833 has a power-down function (SLEEP). This allows sections of the device that are not being used to be powered down, thus minimizing the current consumption of the part, e.g., the DAC can be powered down when a clock output is being generated.

The AD9833 is available in a 10-lead MSOP package.

Applications

Frequency Stimulus/Waveform Generation
Liquid and Gas Flow Measurement
Sensory Applications–Proximity, Motion, and Defect Detection
Line Loss/Attenuation
Test and Medical Equipment
Sweep/Clock Generators
Time domain reflectometry (TDR) applications"

Dave Smith Instruments In The Spotlight With the OB-6 and DAN MOORE – MODULUS III

You can find the full interview on DSI's website here.

"Modulus III is an instrumental live electronica trio based in Bristol, UK and comprised of multi-instrumentalists Dan Moore and Drew Morgan, with drummer Matt Brown. The trio recorded their self-titled debut LP at a live performance in their home town of Bristol. The resulting record was released in 2018 on vinyl, CD and digital.

Despite having the chops of top-level session instrumentalists, Modulus III’s musical manifesto is a reaction against the tendency for virtuosity for virtuosity’s sake in a lot of modern/nu jazz, and is more philosophically akin with the post-Sun Ra-esque aspirations of fellow post-jazz, electronica space cadets such as The Comet Is Coming, the hypnotic, polyrhythmic explorations of Steve Reich, and the expansive, improvisatory ethos of early 70’s Miles Davis. We chatted with Dan about how he’s using the OB-6."

D.G. - Novatrance / Live Improvisation / Novation Ultranova / Launch Control XL / Trance

Published on Apr 22, 2018 Dee Gee

"Ok, here's my another live improvisation it's a bit old (one year, but still..)

I played it on Novation Ultranova using my own synth presets created from scratch, most of them have 2 voices.

I used DM2 (iOS app) to compose drum tracks in advance after that I switched between them during playing.

All were recorded live simultaneously via Focusrite Scarlet 8x6
Cubasis Mobile was used as a DAW

Ultranova was controlled by Launcontrol XL and a 25 key keyboard with faders (for an upper octave and volume control) they were routed via MIDI IO app.

Zoom multistomp MS-70CDR was used as an effect processor for Nova and recorded along with its clean sound. (from digital and analog outputs of the NOVA)

Mobile Set:

Hardware:
- Novation Ultranova
- Novation Launch Control XL
- 25 Key Midi Keyboard
- Powered USB Hub
- iPad PRO
- Focusrite Scarlet 8x6
- Zoom Multistomp MS-70CDR
- Sustain Pedal

Repairing and cleaning a BOSS DR-660

Published on Apr 23, 2018 organfairy

"The demo starts at 3:25.

In my repair and cleaning series about the pile of musical items I bought at a second hand shop I have now come to the drum machine: The BOSS DR-660. There wasn't any serious problems to take care off. Just a dead RAM battery and the unit was even so informative that it automatically told me that this was the problem.

The music - apart from the demo - is 'Children of Paradise' which was originally a disappointing single for Boney M and marked the beginning of their decline in the early 1980s. I play it on my Elka X-1000."

WMD Fracture - How to make analog style clap sounds

Published on Apr 23, 2018 WMDevices

"The WMD Fracture is a super versatile eurorack module capable of making sounds that range from analogue, xox style claps, to loose groups of people clapping together in a room, and much further into weirdness with it's Direct CV control and Oscillation capabilities.

In this video, we quickly show the settings of where we like to start when creating an Analog style clap that sounds like it came right off of a vintage drum machine. This module is obviously capable of so much more, but sometimes you just need a nice sounding, solid, punchy, fat, clap sound on that two and for. Use it like a snare, use it to pat yourself on the back. The choice is yours."

How to "upgrade" the Behringer Model D to a duophonic synth

Published on Apr 23, 2018 loopop

"The Behringer Model D is a great analog synth - and by design it's monophonic. However, if you've seen my channel before, you know I'm not going to let that stop me from trying to play more than one note at a time with it, something that has a unique characteristic in synthesizers that are intended to be monophonic.

You can't control any of its 3 oscillators separately, but there's a fourth oscillator that can be controlled independently, and that's the filter - via a dedicated CV input - and when you crank up emphasis all the way, it resonates and creates its own tone. The nice thing about the D, is that there's resonance both in high pass and in low pass modes, which opens up a lot of sonic possibilities.

This does require a little configuration trick. When playing duo-phonically, the keyboard sends two notes - so we need a way to tell the D's oscillators to play one, and the filter to play the other.

In the particular case of the Arturia Keystep, which is what I use in this clip, that's achieved by setting note priority on the D to LOW, and CV out priority on the Keystep to HIGH. CV then controls the high note, and MIDI the low one. This trick lets you play two notes at once on the D.

The final piece in the puzzle is that the Behringer Model D's CV tracking on the filter doesn't quite track at 1 volt per octave, but it's close enough. If you're playing the filter notes in a one octave range, depending on your sensitivity, that might not be noticeable, but it does become apparent across a few octaves. The way to solve this is to interject a module like Befaco's A*B+C, which, with a bit of fiddling back and forth, can produce a result which tunes quite nicely. Since I don't have the module, I used the techniques shown in my "hybrid modular" video to use a virtual version of that module in VCV Rack."
