Gentle OB-6 arps with a Zen delay

video upload by Richard DeHove

Do you find that certain combinations of gear suddenly become "more than the sum of its parts"? The OB-6 has become a huge magnet for my time these past few weeks since I've teamed it up with the Erica Synths Zen delay. This piece is a little similar to the "OB-Zen Nocturne", but instead of manual twiddling of the filter and resonance knobs they're now hooked up to the little MIDI fader box on the left. The far left slider is filter amount; the middle one is resonance. The other fader (which I didn't use here) was assigned to filter EG amount. The benefit of the fader box is the ability to tweak both parameters together while also playing with one hand.

Clearly I'm not playing each note of the arpeggiated chords, just triggering chords. That's done using the plugin "Cthulhu" by Xfer with a range of chords I assigned per note. The piece begins with G Minor 9th, then a G# maj9. After recording I added a touch of EQ and some compression since the big octave range and varying filter and resonance settings gave it some pretty wide dynamics.

Utopia Parkway (Fountains Of Wayne cover)

video upload by Joseph McGinty

"I recorded this version of "Utopia Parkway" for a special tribute to the late Adam Schlesinger organized by his Fountains Of Wayne bandmate, Jody Stephens. Adam was a dear friend and a partner in my piano bar in NYC, Sid Gold's Request Room. He passed away due to complications from COVID-19 on April 1, 2020 and the world lost an incredible talent. Please check out Fountains Of Wayne, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, 'That Thing You Do' and his many other musical accomplishments.
I played this live into ProTools with no overdubs.
Equipment:
Yamaha CP-25 electric piano with Stromer Mutronics Super Fuzz and the Moog Analog Delay.
Sequential Pro 3
Roland CR-5000 CompuRhythm
Liven 8 Bit Warps
Korg MS-20 controlled by the Korg SQ-1 sequencer
Note: I got the CompuRhythm synced up to the 8 Bit and the SQ-1 by feeding the trigger out of the CR-5000 into the sync input of the 8 Bit Warps (line in) and taking the MIDI out of the 8 Bit into the SQ-1."

On Hold: Roland JUNO-6, JX-3P, Sequential OB-6, Dr. A Delay and Reverb

video upload by thesrabbit

"Your call is important to us. Please stay on the line and someone will be with you shortly.

What happens when you press the hold button on a JUNO-6 and play a chord, then do the same on a JX-3P, then play some wiry, stringy pad thingy on an OB-6, with a wash of delay and reverb from an Audiothingies Dr. A? Perhaps you'll get a piece of ambient music that's long enough to not loop even once before your call is answered by a real person. But probably not.

Next time you're on hold, imagine that you're listening to beautiful synths instead of a 10-second monotonous loop.

Jokes and sarcasm aside, I just realized this track is somewhat similar to another ambient pad track I did a long time ago. Only that was done on an iPad with a $5 synth app, recorded with a $5 multi-tracking app, and probably "mastered" in Audacity (free open-source). I remember using a total cheap POS MIDI controller to play it, but it worked and the result was a decent piece of recorded music. That was before I knew squat about synths, other than the cutoff knob did interesting things. Anyway, here's that if you're interested: https://steveconnelly.bandcamp.com/tr..."

How to use the SONICWARE Liven XFM as a Virtual Analog Synth

video upload by ChrisLody

"I'm sure I'll be exploring the XFM much more through tutorials like this as there is lots to explore. But if you find the thought of programming FM synth sounds a bit too complex you can kind of skip over that and just use what you know about subtractive synthesis on the XFM.

We can use the feedback on each operator to create Saw, Square, Triangle and Noise on each of them, use the 8 stage envelopes as ADSR envelopes, set up our filter with it's own envelope, set the operators at intervals and even access Pulse Width Modulation. Loads to play with :)

Here is the interval cheat sheet I mention in the video:

00:00 Intro
01:07 Example analog synth diagram
02:00 XFM 'virtual analog' diagram
03:47 Super Saw example sound
- setting mixer levels, changing the waveforms, detuning waveforms, changing envelopes per 'oscillator'
- tweaking attack and release from pattern edit, changing tone, adding filter with envelope, adding pitch and filter lfo
09:48 Example square sound
- copy sounds, changing waveform to square
10:50 Using the envelope as an ADSR
11:50 Changing pitch by octave and semitone
13:17 Example Pulse and PWM sounds"

Wingie nocturne

video upload by UncertainMusicCorps

"First test of a newly arrived Meng Qi Wingie resonator.
Gave it a [Chimera] BC9 to chew on.
I can't say I know exactly what I'm doing - the Wingie is deliberately cryptic so to encourage happy accidents. But I'm accidentally happy all the same.

Beware, there is quite a large dynamic range to the audio on this video."

Fields of Grain | Monome Grid + Grainfields VST | Instruo Arbhar.

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"I've been experimenting with granular synthesis. I created a few files with notes in a minor scale, coming from different VST sources. The idea behind this is to create 'multisample' files that can be used to 'grain' to actual notes in the scale and to make more musical soundbeds and scapes. In the first part I am testing the files with the Monome Grid and the GrainFields Max for Live application (free). Pretty impressive! But this is a modular channel so in the second part I'll be importing the files into Arbhar, to see if a modular can 'compete' with the powerful PC environment. I personally feel the results were more than impressive. I hope this video will inspire you! I guess it will also work for other granular machines like Morphagene, Nebulae and the new ADDAC 112."

Shared System Tutorials | Part 36 | Melodic Splices (Morphagene)

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"In my previous video, I found a cool way to work with granular synths by creating granular buffers in a melodic scale. This makes it much easier to pick a segment and use it as a pitched voice without affecting playback speed. Obviously, people wanted to know if such a thing would also work with Morphagene. Unfortunately, the Morph is a looper and doesn't support buffers and reversible enveloped polyphonic grains. Fortunately, the Morph is not alone in the Shared System. So I've created a reel with splices (markers) for each note. You can then pick a splice with a 'Shift' trigger or 'Organize' CV. I've added to the illusion with two Maths envelope and FX from Erbe-Verb and Mimeophon. Finally, there's a cool X-PAN tip you may want to explore: mixing CV. I consider X-PAN a vital part to the Shared System, even though it's not in there by default. It turns your mono synth into glorious stereo."
