KIJIMI | Everything In Its Right Place

video upload by Sonic Sand Castles

"Ran a MIDI file of 'Everything in Its Right Place' by Radiohead through the Kijimi. Limited the Kijimi to five voices (to better reflect a Prophet 5).

Q169 Oscillator++ and Q168 Oscillator++ Aid - Synthesizers.com

video upload by O.Z. Hall

"This is a demo of the new Q169 Oscillator++ with Q168 Aid, new from Synthesizers.com.
The only additonal gear was 1) Digital Delay 2) Sequencer 4) LFO++ 5) passive attenuator.
Digital Delay provided by the Swiss Daisy DSP by Zebra Synth.
Note that for VCO2 (synced sound) I'm using the new 'anti-sine' wave.
'The anti-sine wave is like subtracting a sine wave from a triangle wave and produces interesting harmonics.' with the fundamental removed, the other harmonics are much louder."

PM Foundations ER-808 Drums Prototype Demo Number 1

video upload by Randy Piscione

"Quick first demo of the prototype PM Foundations ER-808 Drum Machine. This is a build-it-yourself, Eurorack-based drum machine based on the sounds of the Roland TR-808. Oberheim FVS, Kurzweil K2600XS, and two PM Foundations reSEMbles make up the rest of the band. The chords might be recognizable. Bit more history here:"

PERfourMER mkii sequenced by Sonicware Liven XFM

video upload by ChrisLody

"Here's a quick and dirty jam on a borrowed Vermona PERfourMER MK2. I've been working at a studio/synth cave recently that I'm hoping to share more information on soon. Long story but there is an enormous amount of gear there and it's my job to learn the technical ins and outs of all of it. There is some huge modular racks that won't be going anywhere but some of the smaller pieces of gear I can learn at home, like this.

The PERfourMER mk2 is pretty unique (apart from when comparing it to the mk1 of course!) in that it' can be used as 4 separate monosynths on 4 separate midi channels, through duophonic modes, up to a 4 voice polyphonic synth though with individual settings per voice as they cycle through.

In this jam I have it set to monophonic per voice that I have synths 3 & 4 set to the same midi channel. The Sonicware Liven XFM is a 4 part multitimbral synth but it can also sequence external gear on 4 tracks and 4 different midi channels so the two are a good match. I've kept one channel back on the XFM to play drum sounds, then I'm using a track to trigger synths 3 & 4 to make brassy pad sounds, a track for an arpeggio and a track for a lead. If I get time before I take his back I'll record something in polyphonic mode as it can get pretty lush sounding!"

How to create a big, lush, ambient reverb on the Yamaha EX5 (or any other synth)

video upload by Floyd Steinberg

"As great as it sounds overall, the #reverb effects built into the Yamaha #EX5 are clearly showing their age. But with some routing and tweaking, you can improve the reverb situation, for example for #ambient music. These simple steps will work on any synth that can use more than one insert effect at once. Table of contents:

00:00 intro / demo
01:51 creating a patch to go along with the reverb
03:34 editing the effects: default reverb, effects bypass
04:10 effects routing
05:33 setting up a L/R delay
07:16 setting up a hall reverb
08:20 adjusting reverb return
08:49 comparison: dry signal
09:02 ... wet signal
09:09 ... external reverb effects (strymon volante & nightsky)
09:39 ... and my reverb again
09:52 conclusion
10:09 demo 2 (EX5 only)
11:34 bye-bye"

Patch of The Week: Audio-rate PWM - Big sounds from 1 VCO using extreme Pulse Width Modulation

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Here is how you can make a single oscillator sound huge using pulse width modulation at audio rate - using a normal-speed VCO as a mod source rather than a dedicated LFO. Frequency Modulation (FM) synthesis uses the same principle, but modulating the pitch of a waveform at extreme speeds to create additional harmonics, and thus an entirely new sound. Here we are modulating the shape of the wave itself, which also creates additional harmonic content and produces a new and more complex timbre. This process requires a fair amount of experimenting and fine-tuning, but the results can sound massive.

PATCH NOTES (Duplicated from the PDF file)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Green dots show approximate pot and switch positions. Pots and switches that do not have green dots are not used in this patch, and should be left at their zero or off positions.
In the video I'm using the Glide + Noise MkII module to access the CV bus, allowing me to control VCOs 2 and 3 from one input/cable, otherwise you will need to use a multiple or stacking cables to connect the keyboard/sequencer to VCOs 2 and 3, as is usual with a fully modular synth.
An unconnected cable (nothing at the other end) is connected to the 1V/Oct input of VCO 1 in order to disable the CV BUS from changing it's pitch. If you are not using the CV BUS to control VCOs 2 and 3 then you do not need to connect this cable.
VCO 2 will need careful fine-tuning to get it's frequency at a point where it compliments VCO 3, which it is modulating. The desired point will be when the sound from VCO 3 becomes comparatively smooth, rather than a course, beating timbre.
The CV MIX module is key here for combining the 2 modulation VCOs. You could use any 2 channels, but bear in mind that 3 has a higher gain level, 1 becomes a bi-polar voltage source that can be added to the output if nothing is connected to that channel, and 4 can be used as an offset to the output when it's switch is down.
VCA: In the video I use a Muting Mixer as final output VCA, so in the diagram I show the Discrete Cascaded VCA being used for the benefit of those who have one, but in either case set master to full then gradually increase the input level.
Modules used from top-left to bottom-right: Glide + Noise (for bus board access - optional), VCO 1 & 2, CV MIX, VCO 3, Transistor Ladder Filter, Contour Generators, Discrete Cascaded VCA (or Muting Mixer).

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #120: Alesis Fusion 8HD - Song 3

video upload by Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the third song with the Alesis Fusion 8HD. It's a synthesizer workstation (up to 190 voices per engine, 16 parts multitimbral) that offers several different synthesis types: AWM (sample playback), FM (freely configurable 6-operators engine), Virtual Analog (VA) and Physical Modeling (Wind and Reed models). There are three oscillators per voice that can be any of the above mentioned synthesis types and 20 different filter types including low-pass, band-pass, high-pass and a 4-band EQ for every patch.

I used for the recording the following FX chain:
Fusion 8HD - Elektron Analog Heat - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track."

PO32 Tonic + iPhone Connection (Jamuary2022 Challenge)

video upload by Perplex On

"This jam is my attempt to take part on the weekly #jamuary2022 challenge by @True Cuckoo , where the theme "connection" has to be implemented in one or the other way. Besides, it has to use at least some acoustic samples.

I see the theme of connection contextualized in four layers:

- Emotional connection: The piano recording dates back about 5 years ago to one morning at my mother-in-law‘s house. While some part of the family was preparing food, i was tinkling on the family’s old upright piano. You can even hear my little nephew playing in the background. Especially since the piano and even the house doesn’t exist anymore in this form, it’s a nice reminder to this very moment.

- Literal connection: By strapping the PO on the iPhone, both devices almost become one new self-contained instrument, both by forming a physical unity and by enabling the usage of each audio output simultaneously.

- Physical connection: By utilizing the gyrometer sensor in the iphone to scrub through the recording in a granular synthesis environment (here using idensity app loaded with 2 pitched instances of the piano recording), the body movements are tied to the sonic outcome.

- Audiovisual connection: By presenting this little jam in combination with audioreactive visuals, which are moving forward with each snare hit, the goal is to create a visual clue for the audience to get involved even more into what is happening, creating a wider experience and connection to the act. Furthermore, there‘s a meaningful context to the interweaving circular visuals in the sense that a circle is a connection of infinite points. Like all these individual sonic grains form a whole connected sound. Like life is a connection of infinite single memories."

SOMA Lyra-8 & Ornament // It's like having two LYRAs!

video upload by Dexba

"First time with my new Ornament!
I resisted the impulse to buy it until I got a Pulsar-23, then I thought I was invested enough in the SOMA ecosystem to keep overlooking the Ornament.
So I got it, and I am still not sure how much use I will get out of it, but this jam was a real beauty. I effectively connected with the Lyra on another level, freeing up some mental space for better improvisation, in a way like having two Lyras under my hands.
You can't see it, but on my left, there was my girlfriend painting, so we shared this very artistic moment together and... I mean, that's the reason we do it, right?
When I will receive my tripod for the camera (which I ordered a month and a half ago), I will be able to maybe show you one of these moments together.
I hope you'll enjoy ✨"

#Jamuary2022 | Day 16 | #ROLI Blocks

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"I wanted to do this yesterday, but had to recharge the set. The ROLI Blocks is an innovative set of midi controllers with midi polyphonic expression and a super cool UI. You can use a very useful iPad app when you're on the move, and use the blocks as midi expressiion controllers in your DAW. With the right eurorack interface, you can also drive your modular patches with five dimensions of CV control. This video is about the Blocks, I'll try to connect it to the modular probably in the coming week. I am expecting the new Lumi Keys block in April.

I got this set way before I got into modular so it's not used very often. But #Jamuary2022 is a great excuse to jam with everything that's lying around."
