The Cars - "Drive" cover, but it's all #Motorsynth

video upload by

"Here's a cover of the classic 80s synthpop hit, 'Drive' by 'The Cars'.
All sounds are from the #MotorSynth but the drums, those are from the Yamaha #QY70.
If you didn't know, Motor Synth is an electromechanical #synthesizer which creates sounds by spinning 8 discs super fast. You can either use all 8 voices paraphonic or two of them each polyphonic. There's a selection of analog filters & envelopes which I put to good use here.
Due to it's inertia, this synth always is playing glissando ;-)
Given the tech at hand, I didn't even try to match the sound to the original, but more tried to capture it's athmosphere. Sorry for the mediocre karaoke vocal track, but I think it's good enough.
This was super fun and if this gets some views maybe I'll do more (you can suggest songs if you like)
Let's see if this gets a copyright claim.

Two DB-01s and Charles Bukowski

video upload by Richard DeHove

"This began as a follow-on from my last video "The easiest way to jam on a DB-01". I use exactly the same technique here except applied to two DB-01s: Absolutely basic patterns as the foundation and live arp plaing. The top machine goes into the EQ, B3K and Boss DM-2w. It is tuned with a fast LFO and FM which you see being set at the start. The bottom machine plays percussion and goes into the Zen tape ping-pong. The arp pattern is 'number 4' on the DB-01. There is absolutely no other processing on the DB-01s than what you see - no eq, limiting or volume tweaks. I thought it best to stay pure WYSIWYG.

And since it was all a bit bleak already I thought some poetry by Charles Bukowski would make it even more depressing. The words are from his 1991 poem "Dinosauria, We". This version comes from the movie "Born Into This" and leaves out about a quarter of the lines and changes a few words. I took the movie audio down a few semitones and stretched it.

There is a 256K MP3 version for download on Patreon.

Mother 32 Tracking Correction with the V-SCALE from AJH SYNTH - Fix those out-of-tune External VCO's

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Following on from last week's video showing some ways to expand the sonic capabilities of your Moog Mother-32, this video details the use of the V-SCALE Eurorack module to fix tracking issues with external VCO's and synths.
Previous video here: [posted here]

The Mother-32 is semi-modular in itself, but it also provides a gateway into Eurorack modular with minimal investment, for those who are unsure if it is for them. Even a single Eurorack module can make a big difference to your sound and capabilities. Since the Mother-32 only has 1 oscillator (and no sub-bass/sub-octave generator), the most obvious choice for many would be adding an external VCO. However, this can result in tuning issues between the synth itself and any external oscillators controlled by the synth's KB output (1V/Oct CV output). This is due to the output impedance, which can cause the 1V/Oct CV signal to become inaccurate, and mean that external VCO's can be out-of-tune within the space of a single octave. This problem gets worse as additional VCO's are loaded onto this pitch CV, affecting it's current.

The V-SCALE is a 5-way active buffer, in it's simplest form serving as an accurate buffered multiple, but more uniquely it is designed to address tracking issues encountered between modules or synths. It has a very high input impedance, and a very low output impedance - this alone can fix many tracking problems simply by connecting it between the misbehaving modules/synths. However, 4 of the 5 outputs are also adjustable - this is particularly useful for synths and modules that simply do not track correctly and need calibrating, something that can be difficult or near-impossible to change depending on the unit. This means it can also be used to to adjust the calibration of anything that needs strong 1V/Oct tracking, such as a self-oscillating filter/VCF when used as a melodic oscillator.

"Mint-condition Tom Oberheim Two-Voice Pro in black. Serial number #236. I am the only owner (it was shipped straight here by Jill herself), and it has been packed in its box most of the time. The sequencer has never even been programmed. Both SEMs, and all other functions work perfectly. Absolutely nothing sounds like this machine! Massive analogue warmth and power. Comes in original box, with original manual and all patch-cables. This is as close to a brand-new Two-Voice as you can get. Cosmetically and functionally perfect. Get on this!"

2022/08 - Yamaha CS-5 Repair & modding picturebook

video upload by Stereoping

"I recently got a #Yamaha #CS-5 in bad condition. After fixing some broken things i increasingly fell in love with it's unique sound. To expand the CS5's very limited modulation possibilities i added more and more features. This video shows all fixes and mods. With some cheesy in-between-music from 4-track tape recording - all voices played by the CS-5 of course."

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #125: Arturia MicroFreak - Song 3

video upload by Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the third song with the MicroFreak. It's a monophonic/paraphonic synthesizer with a digital oscillator section containing 12 different algorithms and an analog filter.

I used for the recording the following FX chain:
MicroFreak - Zoom MS-70CDR - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track.

Well, I decided to go back to the basics, but at the same time make something useful for the synth community and do a kind of competition (I like competitions;-). What's my best synth for ambient music :-)"

Wave Terrain Synthesis Module Audio Output

video upload by Sam Carswell

"Using the wave terrain module in 'fixed trajectory mode' as an audio rate oscillator. The output of the wave terrain module is sent through a VCA controlled by MI Tides running in envelope mode, before being sent to the output. The Synthstrom Deluge is being used to sequence the wave terrain module (1 V/Oct frequency modulation) and provide the gate for the envelope.

The terrain used in this video comes from the appendix of Stuart James' 2005 thesis, which can be found here: https://www.stuartgjames.com/research...

Unlike the 2DSINE terrain used in other videos, this terrain features a number of square-wave-like discontinuities at its edges. This can lead to sudden timbral changes when the trajectory wraps around to the other side.

The end of the video gives a close up of the screen, so you can get a better look at the trajectory. The fixed trajectory shows up slightly better on the video than the free trajectory point, but it's still a lot clearer in real life!"

Osi-Op : Drum Synthesis with Monophonic Synth Voice : Vaemi (Eurorack)

video upload by Vaemi

"Hello
Today, with Osi-Op, we will create basically 3 separate channels (kick-snare and hihat) with this synth voice, with a monophonic synthsizer that can only play one sound at a time, that is, only one note.
We're going to think about it this way.
As if each step in the sequencer is a separate drum channel…
or each step is like a separate patch...
If I explain in more detail
First step - it will be kick.
The second third and fourth steps sound like hihat. higher pitched and more glitch sounds… step five - snare.
Again the sixth, seventh and eighth steps will be like hihat
In this way, we will write 3 channels at the same time with a monophonic synthesizer, where we normally play mono sound and make a mono patch.
When modulations come into play, more than 3 channels can be heard, but basically it is useful to think in this way.
When all the sounds are recorded on the computer, we will have only one mono channel.
It is possible to record these sounds by separating them.
At this point, your choice depends on what you want to do.
Either way will sound professional.
While installing this patch, I used 3 osc + 1 noise +3 lfo + 2 vca + 2 lpg + 4 env + 4 cv sequencer + 4 gate sequencer + 1 dual switcher + 1 granular.
Only I processed the master channel of all drums with a granular and added it on this patch in parallel.
Let's listen to the patch together now."
