CME Xkey 37 Review & Sound Demo #TTNM

Published on Apr 12, 2015 The Tuesday Night Machines

"Watch this demo video to find out all about the CME X-key 37 keyboard! You can also win one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqE_RJZydHQ

The CME Xkey 37 is a three-octave USB-MIDI keyboard controller. It's slim, sturdy and features a detachable breakout cable with additional connectors (pedal inputs and a DIN-MIDI output). It doesn't need any drivers, so you can connect it directly to your computer or iPad and start playing with it. There are a lot of free instrument apps, available on Apple's iOS App Store, for example."

CME Xkey37 Arrives in Time for NAMM

Announced last year at the Musikmesse, it appears the CME Xkey37 poly aftertouch keyboard controller is finally arriving.

Aside from the extra octave, the Xkey37 adds a new Xport connector for:

MIDI OUT (DIN-5 through Xcable).
Sustain Pedal input (6.35mm (1/4") jack through Xcable).
Expression Pedal input (6.35mm (1/4") jack through Xcable).

Note the original Xkey was USB only.  The new MIDI cable should make using the Xkey37 with stand alone desktop synths possible, however being USB bus powered, I'm guessing you will have to have it connected to a USB power source at the same time.

Dimensions

Width: 553 mm (21.77 in)
Height: 135 mm (5.31 in)
Depth: 16 mm (0.62 in)
Weight: only 880 g (1.94 lb) - 20% lighter than a 11-inch MacBook Air!

CME Xkey Portable Keyboard Controller Demo - Sweetwater iOS Update Vol. 59

Published on Nov 4, 2013

"Mitch Gallagher checks out the compact 25-key Xkey keyboard controller from CME, with the help of Sweetwater's Daniel Fisher. Enjoy the demo, then click the link above for more on the portable Xkey!"

Available on Sweetwater eBay here.

I wish they had 37 key version. I'm looking for the perfect tablet keyboard controller for lounging on the couch. Currently I'm using my KORG Microkorg. I like the look of the keys on the CME and the poly aftertouch, but two octaves isn't enough range for me.

ios7 allows midi interfaces over USB on an iPhone?

Published on Oct 4, 2013 Gaz Williams·15 videos

"A little trumpeted feature of ios7 on the iPhone is the ability to use a camera connection kit which facilitates audio and midi interfaces to be connected over USB. Fantastic news for micro studios on the go!"

CME Xkeys on eBay

Update: via Moogulator of seqeuncer.de in the comments: "uhm, no - i tried anything adaptor 30pin/lightning, the new CamKit for Lightning on iPhone 5 - they all don't work - I Phone says 'is not supported' or just nothing.. so.. don't know what they do to get it to work in ios7 alone.."

It looks like it depends on the device. If anyone else has tried, feel free to share your experience.

Update via @pldDavid: "worked on my MC603C/A (GSM) iPhone4 using the cam kit and a generic usb MIDI cable."

"For full details visit: http://bit.ly/YI0HgY

Garritan Instant Orchestra is about instantly producing orchestral music very quickly and easily. Our goal is to provide an instantly playable orchestral library with many pre-packaged orchestral sounds.

This library was designed to be an effective shortcut to reach your musical goals. Consider it as a Swiss army knife for musicians - a clean, simple, multi-purpose orchestral tool that will allow you to do many things in an instant. Moreover, it is affordable and fulfills our mission of simplifying and democratizing making music and orchestrating.

Instant Orchestra is for those who do not want to spend time building orchestrations with one instrument or section at a time. It provides pre- packaged groups of instruments, combined sections, orchestral effects, and mood-based presets. Instant Orchestra is designed for those who know little about orchestration or do not have the time to build them. The idea is to provide a large variety of lush, playable orchestrations with the least time and effort."
