Five Notes on the Newly Announced Microsoft Surface

The bullet points for me on the Microsoft Surface:

- The Pro version should have MIDI! You might remember from this post, Windows RT for ARM processors will most likely not have MIDI support, so go with Pro if you need it (unless they disable it for some bizarre reason). The Pro version is the full blown Windows 8 OS.

- VSTs on the tablet! With the full blown OS you should have access to every VSTi out there. The big question will be how well they work with a touch interface - tiny buttons, knobs and sliders, rotational vs. horizontal dragging of the controls, etc..

- Processing power and RAM? How well will VSTs run on it?

- Battery life? How long can it run processor intensive VSTs?

- Built in USB

If you have any notes, feel free to comment.

Midi / Error!! Alternate MIDI Max/MSP Controllers

Midi / Error!! /// phulebox2012 \\\ Multi-Effects Unit - playstation controller + MaxMSP

YouTube Uploaded by midierror on Mar 22, 2010

"This is my final year uni project from a few years back. Its a software multi-effects unit I built in MaxMSP. It is controlled using a playstation controller, and is designed to be used while DJing. That said, it can be used with any input device such as a guitar, mic, drum machine, commodore 64, or minidisc player.

It has had changes made to make the screen more functional and user friendly. The 'engine' routing matrix is now hidden and all its settings can be changed using the directions.

Each of the effects can be fed through one another, or used singularly. The analog sticks control four parameters that can be locked to store placement.

At the time this was amazingly difficult to program, and the front end was a full screen. Its looking swish in MaxMSP5 !"

MIDI / error !! /// Xitar \\\ Xbox 360 Rock Band Guitar as Midi Controller

Uploaded by midierror on Jul 7, 2010

"Pronounced "Zitar" this is a Xbox 360 wireless controller sending messages to a hardware synth.

The tune on the intro is: Autologue - Last (Midi/error!! jungle mutation)"

Midi / Error !! /// Walyx \\\ Wacom Tablet + Max MSP - Controls Amen Break pitch and loop points

Uploaded by midierror on Mar 24, 2010

"This is an illustration of what can be done with a wacom graphics tablet and max msp. Using a max external it picks up the x y axis of the pen and converts it to the pitch (x-axis) and loop end (y-axis). It took about 2 minutes to make this patch. . . . .

The tablet has 3 buttons for on/off states and features pressure sensitivity......therefore a total of 9 parameters can be changed using it. Im going to dig a bit deeper with this idea, and see what I can make; particularly in terms of synth playback."

Midi / Error !! /// X-bovst \\\ Xbox Midi Controller for FM VST using Max MSP

Uploaded by midierror on Mar 23, 2010

"I wrote this patch for MaxMSP to control the amazing YMVST synth. As you can hear its a great little vst; based on the old YM2149 chips.....you can get it from here:

http://www.preromanbritain.com/ymvst/

Im not too happy with the way this worked out as its controlled mainly by buttons......but im sure someone might appreciate this.

I have also written a patch to control an Astation synth using a Playstation controller......but that is currently getting an overhaul.

respect to gareth morris for a wicked peice o kit !"

VSTs, Ableton & More Coming to the iPad?

Well, maybe, sort of... Apparently OnLive is bringing Windows to the iPad. If you aren't familiar with OnLive, they are an online streaming company that currently focuses on the gaming market. Basically they run the apps on their servers and you can then run the apps on virtually any system via their client app. Their app is currently available on Android and is coming for the iPad. Windows 7 desktop is coming, and the best part is it will be free. The question is will you be able to purchase and install your own apps on it?

Via MacRumors via GigaOm:

"Since applications are running on high-end computing clusters in OnLive’s data centers, the only thing holding back performance is the network. Which means that in today’s world of pervasive broadband connectivity, Windows applications running on an iPad could potentially be faster than those running on a standard Windows 7 laptop.

OnLive is making the Desktop app available in a freemium model through which users will get 2GB worth of cloud storage and the ability to use Windows 7 applications such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint, as well as other utilities and games. Documents can be stored in the cloud and accessed from any device with a web interface. In the near future, OnLive expects to launch Onlive Desktop Pro, a more robust service that will offer up 50 GB of storage, priority access, additional apps and other features for $9.99 a month. It also promises collaboration features for enterprise users such as sharing documents or working on virtual whiteboards."

No MIDI Support for Windows 8 Tablets?

Update 6/19/12: The Microsoft Surface Pro should have MIDI as it will run Windows 8 Pro.

This one in via Sanjay. You can see the discussion on MSDN here. via anon30524 in that thread:

"While I'm sure you understand the repercussions of this, I will point it out to others viewing this who may not.

No Midi Support in Metro == No Midi support on any Windows 8 ARM devices

MIDI will still work in Windows 8 Desktop (x86/x64) in non-metro apps using the following to legacy Win32 APIs:

MME API (Written for Windows 3.0 in 1991)

DirectMusic API (Written for Win 95 in 1996)

I hope that you haven't frozen the API for Windows 8 and there is still a chance for MIDI Support. A new MIDI API would be great. Why you didn't write one when you created WASAPI in Vista is beyond me. I can acknowledge that this is probably a lot of work and it is late in the Windows 8 development cycle, however, this is not your only choice. You are already making some Win32/COM APIs available in Metro. Why not add the MME MIDI APIs to this list?

One only has to look at the iPhone/iPad to look at all the wonderful MIDI music apps possible. Windows 8 ARM device users should be able to enjoy the same type of apps.

I encourage anyone interested in Audio or MIDI to post a reply to this thread and show Microsoft that you want MIDI Device Support in Metro."

And via Apple Insider:

"The president of Microsoft's Windows unit, Stephen Sinofsky, has again pointedly clarified that new ARM tablets running Windows 8 next year won't actually run existing Windows apps for PCs."

If any Microsofties out there have more info on this, feel free to send it in. No MIDI pretty much means any Windows 8 Tablet is dead in the water for many of us, leaving the iOS and Android based tablets it for now. This would be a really poor choice for Microsoft. It will limit the market and limit free publicity with musicians that would otherwise use the tablet.

An Exclusive First Look at Tim Thompson's Kinect-Based Instrument: MultiMultiTouchTouch

YouTube Uploaded by newechoproductions on Apr 2, 2011

"MultiMultiTouchTouch is custom solution invented by Tim Thompson that offers players any number of arbitrarily-shaped multitouch areas with three-dimensional spatial control. Interaction with this space allows users to control and play virtual synthesizers using nothing but a Microsoft Kinect as the controller. In this video Mark Mosher interviews Tim who offers a behind-the-scenes look at the technology. At the end of the video Mark gives MultiMultitouchTouch a try. MS Paint Interpereted as audio data = Awesome music!

YouTube Uploaded by r2blend on Mar 9, 2011

"Just made a really weird and awesome discovery.

If you import an EXE file into an audio program as audio data, you hear all kinds of cool stuff. The most awesome by far for me was MS Paint.

It's probably one of the coolest things I've ever heard form something like this. All I did to the audio was master it slightly to make it sound less harsh to the ears, as well as remove a long section of noise.

Here it is on soundcloud:

http://soundcloud.com/r2bl3nd/windows-7-x64-ms-paint-exe

This is the Windows 7 x64 edition of mspaint.exe. I used Adobe Audition to import and edit the audio, but one could jsut as easily use Audacity's "import Raw Data" feature. I imported this as 8-bit, 22050hz stereo audio. I faded in the beginning, as well as removing a long section of noise part of the way through."

Electronic Computer Startup Noise recorded form an LED

Uploaded by r2blend on Mar 9, 2011

"This is of the sound that my computer's LED makes when its light is recorded as sound by connecting a CDS Cell to a handheld recorder's microphone input. Needless to say, it sounded awesome.

You can hear the disks spinning up, the PC Speaker (at 0:08), and all of the other devices that are drawing power. Even the background hiss is from the computer itself, as I had the recorder set to a relatively insensitive setting. Not to mention that the cell was literally pressed up against the light, effectively blocking out all other potential noise or hum sources."
