Expert Controller for Yamaha VL1

video upload by Robert Skerjanc

"Demonstration of the hardware prototype. It can edit the complete physical model of the VL1. Musically not much enlightening, but showing some first impressions. See also my home page: https://vl1.skerjanc.de/?p=23"

"This is my vision of an ideal hardware controller for the famous Yamaha VL1 synthesizer. After my experience of making a HW controller for the FS1R, I decided to create an new user interface that deals easily with hundreds of parameters to control this beast. The case is designed as a 19″ rack mount, the same size as the VL1m module. As the name implies, it can edit all physical modelling parameters as you were able with the Yamahas Expert Editor for Macs.

Individual dials for all parameters rendered quite impossible, so I found a way to divide the parameters into several pages of 16 parameters and show the content on an OLED displays.

You have 7 groups on the front panel: Global, Control, Effect, Driver, Physics, Pipe and Modifier. Each group has several buttons and LEDs to indicate the current selected parameter page. In the next image you see that the page for editing breath noise and excitation is selected, and the 16 dials are assigned to the belonging parameters.

The dials are endless encoders with haptic clicks. The displays are divided in two halves, upper display half describes the parameter name and value for the upper dial and vice versa.

That’s it: you have a good overview about the whole context and you can easily dive into all parameters."

You can find additional pics and details at https://vl1.skerjanc.de/?p=23.

Le Grand Strum - Strummed Chord MIDI Controller by sixty four pixels

video upload by Jason Hotchkiss

"A quick demo of the upgraded Le Strum MIDI controller. Available from six4pix.com/grandstrum"

"LE GRAND STRUM is a new version of our popular LE STRUM controller. It comes pre-assembled, in a larger format, with high quality 12mm tactile switches and gold plated strum pads.

To play MIDI notes, you hold down one of the chord buttons and touch the tip of the stylus to the strum plate. The contacts on the strum plate are mapped to notes of the chord across multiple octaves and you can create guitar-like strums, massive chord sweeps and arpeggios by moving the stylus across the strum plate.

36 chord buttons give you immediate access to 84 different chords (maj, min, dom7, maj7, min7, aug, dim for 12 root notes). You can also play sus4, add6 and add9 chord variations (with some limitations)
The 16 pad, gold plated strum plate has a tapering layout which allows fast chord strums at the top and individual note picking at the bottom.
Two new circular strum areas duplicate notes from the main pads and allow you to play continuous arpeggios by moving the stylus in a circular motion.
Multiple chord modes are offered, including stacked triads, guitar chord voicing, “drone” chords on second MIDI channel and scale mapping for playing melodies
5 pin MIDI socket for direct connection MIDI synthesizer hardware or to a computer (Using a suitable MIDI interface/USB-MIDI cable)
Long life from a 9V PP3 battery (7mA current draw typical). Battery not included
Integral enclosed acrylic base plate with leather stylus holder and acrylic side legs/hand-grips and non-slip rubber feet
Open-source hardware and firmware and hackable design – with PCB pads for attaching a second stylus and external pads or strings
Approx size – 17 x 12 x 3.5cms. Approx weight – 250g without battery
A fun, unique and expressive MIDI controller.Great for learning about chord progressions and a helpful songwriting tool
LE GRAND STRUM shares the same firmware and function with the LE STRUM DIY kit.

Please note that synthesizer hardware or software is required to make sound. LE GRAND STRUM is a MIDI controller and does not make any sound by itself!"

Superbooth 2023: Robot Dog Music - Solo - Improbable Sequence Series

video upload by sonicstate

"Robot Dog Music, a company based in Osaka, Japan, presented their modules at Super Booth 2023. Jason from Robot Dog Music, introduced us to the Solo ribbon strip controller, which has been available for some time, but now features a beveled faceplate. It has onboard quantization, a Legato function, and a hold feature.

Next we met the Improbable Sequence series which are two new modules, both three HP, built to run on the principles of loopable randomness. The Gates module generates random gate patterns, while the CV module generates random CV patterns. They have up to 32 steps, density control, balance control, accent output, and swing, including negative swing, which is unusual in Eurorack. They have reset and generate inputs for automating the button process. The last product is a case for the Solo, designed to be sturdy and backpack-friendly, with LED mount points for DIY enthusiasts.

Solo Price: 349 USD. Available: June 2023

Case Price: 499 USD

Improbable Sequence Series Price: 199 USD each

http://robotdogmusic.com/"

"Solo, the ribbon controller I always wanted!

Solo is an intelligent ribbon controller for your Eurorack system! In standard mode it is designed to sit in-between your sequencer, and the destination (oscillator or other). Solo watches both CV and Gate signals, and while not touching the ribbon strip, Solo will simply pass the signals along to it’s destination. HOWEVER, when you touch the ribbon strip, the magic begins to happen!

Solo watches for incoming gate signals, and will only change notes on a gate trigger, making sure to keep you in time automatically, allowing you to “Solo” atop any standard sequence! Once you let go, the sequence returns to normal.

Solo offers a variety of other modes too! Transposition mode, in both a quantized (transpose) and Unquantized mode (pitch bend) are available."

Intech Studio Announces Grid 2.0 MIDI Controller

via Intech Studio

"We will be exhibiting our ever-evolving Grid modular MIDI controllers at Superbooth this year again - for the 4th time in a row - along with our new product, Knot and our fresh collaborative platform, the Profile Cloud."

"Announcing Grid 2.0

the controller family re:imagined to embrace the power of co-creation through the Profile Cloud

what happened to 1.0?

Grid 2.0 is marking the release of the newly developed version of the Grid controller family. All the effort and hard work, that has been put into Grid throughout the last year both production-, and software-wise has finally come together.

Grid has just become more accessible, collaborative and sustainable.

However, it is important to highlight, that all modules will remain compatible with the initial controller series. In the following sections we intend to present the recent innovations of Grid.

co-create: release of the Profile Cloud

We are launching a significant development in the Grid Editor: the opportunity to collaborate, inspire and share through the Profile Cloud. Now all Grid Creators can browse, download and add profiles to the Cloud, that functions as a public library for producers. Now you will be able to edit and manage your profiles across different devices through your Profile Cloud account. On top of that, you can also add descriptions, links or files like an Ableton script to the Profiles you share.

Create. Share. Collaborate.

EF44 transparent

co-manufacture for sustainability: an open hardware open for repair

We have designed a hardware system that can be easily repaired by anyone with just one screwdriver. Why? Simply put, because we don’t support the “throwaway culture” of modern capitalism. Grid is designed to last.

However, certain malfunctions can always happen, and nobody likes the hustle of product returning. Thanks to the new hardware design from now on, all Grids can be self-repaired. The chassis and the 4 interface boards will be separately replaceable. Replacement parts will be sent internationally including a 1-year warranty.

Reuse. Rebuild. Inspire.

new processor, new possibilites

As we grow, our expectations grow further. We have decided to upgrade Grid with a new processor based on open-source development and community support. We build upon collaboration to learn from each other and grow together, without unnecessary gatekeeping.

Grid users will be able to manage complex control configurations, and what’s even better is that the new architecture will be expanded with wireless Bluetooth connection – a feature many procuders have been looking forward to.

less branding, more flexibility

The Grid logo from the controller’s front panel will be removed. This was not an easy choice to make, but it had to be made, simply for a convenient user experience. Snapping together Grid in any direction, while keeping it’s symmentry required even more flexibility on the front panel design.

As for a stable connection and long-lasting hardware design, we also decided to blend together the plastic housing with the metal cover. In this way, the housing will become the impact surface when snapping together the controller modules."

NAMM 2023 - Eon-One.net - Netherblade

video upload by

"Eric Netherland of Eon-One.Net showed us the Netherblade, a MIDI controller that has a sound engine which can run any plug-in, be it samples, physical modeling, granular, digital, or any other type of plug-in. It has a real-time pitch bend feature that can bend any note to any other note polyphonically.

Eric handbuilds each Netherblade, and there are only a few of them in existence as he mostly builds them to order. The price range is between $2,400 and $2,700, depending on the CPU and memory and whether the customer wants a painted or natural finish. The Netherblade has three interface types: keyboard, Fretboard, and a grid for triggering drums and other sounds.

Netherblade Price: 2,400 - 2,700 USD

https://eon-one.net/netherblade_page...."

The Netherblade is a unique and expressive musical instrument. Stylish, precise, fast, and fun to play. This is the first MIDI controller that can accurately bend pitch from any note to any other note on a standard keyboard, fretboard or grid layout. There is virtually no learning curve for any keyboardist or guitarist although there are infinite open doors to create new techniques. Independent per-note pitchbending is seamless and fluid with nothing in the way of sliding to any interval in any direction whilst remaining in tune. Vibrato is natural and intuitive with no need for fixed LFO modulation. The instrument allows a players character to come thru so no two performances will sound exactly alike

Response time is lightning fast and, with no moving parts, can play faster than a standard keyboard.

Pitch and articulation are separated for easier control. With the integrated XYZ pad, you can simultaneously modify 3 MIDI controllable parameters while playing and bending notes in real time. Examples: volume, timbre, harmonics, muting, effects, etc. Additional switches provide octave up/down and configurable keyswitching.

NAMM 2023 - Nektar Aruba

video upload by sonicstate

"At NAMM 2023, Sonic State caught up with Tim Chandler to see a live integration demo of Nektar's Aruba, which enhances the beat-making experience with Ableton Live using Max for Live devices. Tim demonstrated the integration by showing Ableton Live and Aruba running side by side. He explained how five settings within the integration need to be enabled, particularly the Clip Record mode and Auto Trim Recorded Clips feature, which trims the empty space at the start and end of a clip. Tim went on to demonstrate the basic DAW integration with Ableton Live, including controlling the arranger loops, track selection, and scene selection.

The demonstration moved on to where Aruba excels with Live, which is controlling the drum rack. Tim showed how Aruba automatically updates to give slices on the rack when loading a loop, with the bank up and down buttons moving up and down the rack. He then showed how to switch slices to be simple one-shots and change the color of pads using the pad coloring feature.

More information on Aruba can be found on their official websites.
Aruba Price: £269.00
More info:

Aruba’s hardware is all about realtime access and performance: A host of controls ensures direct access to key features without any menu diving. At the center are 16 large RGB pads – they are velocity and pressure-sensitive and can be fine-tuned to match your personal playing style. ARUBA’s 8 heavy-duty 360-degree rotary pots are always assigned to control a selected feature’s parameters with their assignments shown on the color TFT display. 4 display buttons give access to additional settings, MIDI assignments or secondary menus. Dedicated buttons make it easy to switch between different modes: Internal MIDI controller, drum machine style sequencer, Pad Repeat or DAW Control are always just one button-press away.

The hardware Step Sequencer is programmed like a classic drum machine from the 16 small RGB buttons. Each pad can be programmed, or recorded in real-time, with its own independent sequence. You can solo, mute or trigger sequences simply by hitting a pad and control other parameters from the pots, which makes the Sequencer an excellent realtime performance tool. The MIDI Out on ARUBA’s back lets you sequence external MIDI gear and can also be used as a MIDI interface from the computer.

Then there’s the transport section for DAW Control: With Nektar DAW Integration everything’s set up for instant control of your DAW’s transport functions from Aruba. In this mode, the pots let you set locators, select tracks, navigate and even set up a connected footswitch for transport control. Without DAW integration, the transport buttons can be assigned to MIDI functions or to control the sequencer. The 2 footswitches are also MIDI-assignable. Aruba’s feature set is greatly enhanced when connected to the included Nektarine software. Eight mode buttons give one-press-access to key Nektarine functions, including Mixer, Pad Setup, Instrument and FX plugin control, browsing and solo/mute. When a mode is selected, the eight 360 degree analog pots offer smooth control of the selected mode’s parameters and in particularly, deep plugin control of your VST, VST3 and AU plugins. Control the assigned plugins, sends or insert FX from Aruba – with full parameter feedback on Aruba’s screen. Many plugins are already pre-mapped for control but you can also create your own mapping, as deep as you like.

ARUBA stores 16 user Internal presets for pad configuration and pot MIDI control assignments. When paired with Nektarine, an ulimited amount of pad configurations can be saved complete with plugin and Nektarine settings. Pad’s are programmed from the Pad Setup mode which also includes menus for Chord and Scale, so you can use the pads to play melodic parts or assign chords to each pad.

WEIRD GEAR: Pulsar-23 (Andrew Huang Edition)

video upload by ANDREW HUANG

"Honored to be partnering with Soma and Perfect Circuit on the Andrew Huang Edition of Pulsar-23! More info: https://link.perfectcircuit.com/t/v1/..."

Note the Embodme Erae Touch controller.

We're pleased to present the new Pulsar-23 Andrew Huang Edition: a vibrant yellow version of the one-of-a-kind, organismic semi-modular drum machine made in collaboration between SOMA and the producer and YouTuber himself. SOMA's Pulsar-23 has become a go-to instrument for subverting the expectations of what a drum machine can or should do, attracting the interest of curious musicians looking for something a little bit different out of their drum synthesizer. With this version finished in a vibrant yellow personally chosen by Andrew Huang, the Pulsar-23 has become a favorite part of Andrew's studio due to its open-ended patching structure and rejection of standard drum machine tropes. The results may not always be what you expect, but like many other SOMA devices, Pulsar-23 creates a seemingly organic connection between the musician and instrument, tapping into the deeper parts of your subconscious mind to rely on instinct and reaction rather than conscious decision-making.

Buchla LEM218 V3

This one in via brian comnes aka baghead.

Description via Buchla. See the dealers on the right for availability.

"The third iteration of one of the most used touch interfaces, the 218, as the LEM218v3: The 218e version3 Lunar Excursion Module. The first design appeared in the 1973 release of the Buchla Music Easel and named for the spacecraft that delivered astronauts to the moon. Providing the familiar piano key layout for this early mobile music machine, the additional controls and capabilities were an interface for exploring uncharted musical territory. With the new version 3, it’s been updated with a new foundation of stable, modern electronics and plenty of inputs and outputs to integrate with your Buchla, MIDI, and Eurorack gear.

MIDI Polyphony, Velocity & More!
More than just MIDI compatible, the LEM 218 v3 gives you a unique interface to playing your existing MIDI gear and soft synths. Each touch outputs note name, channel pressure, and velocity for every note, along with sustain controls from a pedal. Polyphonic MIDI mode lets you play chords. The touchstrip can act as a pitch bend control, or as a mod wheel for additional expressive control. Easily configured using the front panel controls, you can send notes and controls on any MIDI channel. Send the LEM some MIDI, and it gets converted to voltages and gates for eurorack and Buchla control.

Capacitive Magic
The incredible sensitivity and accuracy of the redesigned touch bed means the lightest touch will produce triggers and control voltage for your setup. The adjustable sensor has the dynamic range and durability to handle your playing. The new texture not only improves the sensing, but provides a satisfying tactile experience. As always, pressure is an expressive output, adding an extra dimension to the control. MIDI outputs velocity and polyphony, as well as channel pressure, making the LEM218 a uniquely expressive controller for all your synthesizers. The configurable touchstrip adds a fantastic addition for pitch bend or as an additional modulator to patch into your system

Get More For Your Euro
Even if you don’t have any Buchla products, the LEM 218 v3 is designed to work with your Eurorack-compatible gear. Four 3.5mm jacks output 1v/octave pitch, 0-8 volts pressure, touchstrip voltage, and gate outputs for use with Eurorack equipment. Or, combine your Euro with your Buchla instruments. If NATO can do it, so can you. The sound design possibilities will blow your mind

Arpeggiate
A pulse input allows the arpeggiator to be driven by external inputs and are allowed to interact with the automated notes to make the pattern more complex. Additional controls allow you to blend different patterns and randomness to easily change from the expected to the surprising

Control
The classic preset voltage knobs offer several possible ways to shift your sounds into new territory. Not only can the knobs be used for quick access to voltages for your patch, they can control arpeggiation modes and octave shifting. Pads output pulses for additional control

Set It Up Your Way
Such a unique device will spark many ideas. With easy front panel configuration, you can quickly customize the velocity and pressure sensitivity, MIDI channel, knob behavior, and more. No cumbersome software setups, just simple settings with the keys and knobs, and you’re ready to play."
