Competition Coming to Behringer from China? Meet the Moog Modular from China

Some pics of a Moog modular from China in via an anonymous reader. Note they are full panel designs vs. individual modules. It's interesting when you think about it. Behringer is known for providiing affordable knock-offs of known synths. What's keeping China from offering the same for less, and would anyone really question it considering?

via my source:

"There were about 20 or so made, I did have one on order but decided against it as I thought it may not have been a good investment.

I was told that no more would be made as they contained some un-obtainable parts that mean only a handful of people could order them.

I'm sure posting them will get someone interested, which may inspire them to find another way to build them again."

Synthetic Sound Labs Introduces the TUBE VCA / TIMBRAL GATE IN MU FORMAT

via Synthetic Sound Labs / SSL

"The Russians Are Coming!

What happens when you apply 1950's era Soviet technology to a modern analog synth?  You get the new SSL 1530 Tube VCA / Timbral Gate module - a wild blend of vacuum tube warmth and distortion, along with an incredibly useful VCA that is so much more than the sum of its parts.

The 1530 uses miniature pencil-sized vacuum tubes that were developed and refined by the Russians over 60 years ago.  They are exceptionally low current and low voltage devices - so there's no need to generate the traditional high-voltage power supplies that are required for most other vacuum tubes.  Very cool stuff!

While it’s a surprisingly good VCA, it really shines when it’s over-driven - rounding and folding the input waveforms like nothing else available. In some modes, it’s prone to whacky self-oscillation that can be made to lock onto the harmonics of the input waveform in cascading howls. Totally adjustable and controllable.

In conjunction with and licensed by Ken Stone (CGS), Synthetic Sound Labs has further expanded on Ken's designs to include several other circuit enhancements to make your Russian dreams "Come True".

SSL has added LEDs behind the tube to visually emulate the warm glow of the filament, and pulsating blue LEDs that simulate tubes as they are being driven by control voltages. A custom acrylic window shows off the effects in true retro fashion.

SSL uses quality fiberglass-epoxy printed circuit boards, precision automated robotics and meticulous hand-crafted assembly assure years of trouble-free service.

Synthetic Sound Labs has been in the analog synthesizer business since 1973. The 1530 is yet another in SSL’s growing line of new synthesizer modules. Proudly made in the USA.

Pricing is $295 US. Available directly from SSL and through NoiseBug, Pomona, CA.

Stealaes Synamodec - Phase shifter with delay processor eurorack demo

Dziam Bass

This is the first Stealaes Synamodec post. New maker, new module.

"Hello all
today I have a demo of the Stealaes module from Synamodec, this is a phase shifter module with a built-in delay processor.
The module has quite a vintage character and that's why I showed it for production, like the 4/8/12 stage which saturates the signal with a nice phazer effect. For this fun with deph and rate so that you can hear the effect.
then delay for modulation, sometimes for reflections typically delay but mostly for delay modulation for the main modulation of the signal.
It's quite a simple demo in the case below, also only on the wave with VCO.
in this demo I used the VCO GR11 tag from Rebach and the AJH synth Gemini 2412 filter for full anal voice where Stealaes complements it with its vintage character.
for me it's a great module but now, when you order this module, you will get the MIx Divider module for free, so it's worth checking the Synamodec website.
It is worth noting that the module is handcrafted in a retro 70's style like the first modular modules and not on a printed pcb."

「PASSIVE TOOLS 2」by SYNTHFOX ~overview~

SYNTHFOX Channel

"Overviewing my new passive utility set and its various capabilities! These demos are with plain-simple Doepfer modules for the sake of clarity and simplicity, but of course, one can get way more complicated and unpredictable results using it in more uncommon ways."

https://reverb.com/shop/synthfoxs-boutique

PASSIVE TOOLS 1 by SYNTHFOX is a versatile collection of passive utilities in 4 HP. It consists of 4 signal processors, 3 of which can be musically useful when used with audio, CV and logic/gate signals, and one is intended to be a sound processor.

PASSIVE TOOLS 1 includes four useful submodules:

- MASH is a somewhat esoteric signal interwinder. A passive diode/transistor setup mashes the two signals together, often boosting their slight detunes and mismatches for audio, and creates interesting patterns out of CVs and logic signals. It acts in a manner somewhat similar to ring modulators and the logic XOR output, although the expected result of either is unobtainable from it: instead, you are going to get more unpredictable and surprising results.

- OR is a simple, yet very useful "max" processor. It lets the highest of the two voltages on its inputs pass, while completely blocking the other one. Its main intent is to combine gate signals like an OR logic gate, but it also can be used to select the maximal of the two LFOs, for example, or even mix down two sounds in a weird, weird way.

- M0RE is the least complex part of the module: a simple half wave rectifier lets only the positive half of the wave pass through, while completely blocking the negative portion. Useful for ridding the CV of the negative portion, harmonically enhancing sounds, or converting a bipolar squaerwave-like signals into unipolar gate signals.

- HPF is the only submodule that is intended only for use with audio: it's a simple passive high pass filter with three preset cutoff frequencies. It's an extremely useful and underappreciated audio tool: when it comes to mixing down the patch, nothing is a simpler solution in fixing the frequency overlaps between the bass and mid layer, for example, than a high-pass on the higher sound. It can as well be used to DC decouple sounds that have some voltage offset, or converting gates to tiny pluck-like spikes for pinging the filters.

The module draws no power and comes with 2 M3 mounting screws. NB! The module is assembled on-demand upon purchase, and it takes 1 working day. So, don't worry about the unit not being shipped right the next day - it will be shipped in 3 working days.

Introducing the Hummingbird Triple Oscillator Bank

Patchwerks Seattle

Note this is the first Northwest Synthesizers post. You can find the Hummingbird here.

"In this video resident expert Nick Bigelow presents us with the new triple oscillator bank module called the Hummingbird by Northwest Synthesizers.

The Hummingbird is a three oscillator, 20HP Eurorack module that has a recognizable front panel layout with some familiar control features.

Hummingbird allows the creation of a Warm "FAT" sound that normally is not associated with a digital oscillator module.

There are three oscillator CV inputs for 1v/octave sources. All three oscillators can be controlled from a single CV input, or each one can be controlled separately. There is also a modulation CV input with a variable gain control. The modulation input always controls all three oscillators and can (via a toggle switch) either control the pitch of all 3 oscillators or can vary the waveform selection of all 3 oscillators.

Each oscillator has an octave adjust control which gives a range from two octaves below to two octaves above the control voltage input. Oscillators two and three also have a variable pitch adjustment with a range from 5 semitones down to 7 semitones up from the control voltage input, continuously variable with a clean "unison" center adjustment range to allow a quick return to "no pitch offset".

All three oscillators have a waveform adjustment control that allows selecting from triangle, to ramp (sawtooth), to square, to narrow pulse. The transition between waveforms is continuous to allow an almost infinite pallet of output waveforms.

Each oscillator has a separate output jack to allow for multiple routing destinations. Oscillator 1 has an additional "Sub" output which is a square wave one octave below Osc1's basic pitch. Also provided is a single "summed" oscillator output jack. This summed output always mixes equal amounts of Osc 1, 2 and 3 along with an adjustable amount of the Osc 1 Sub output.

Bastl Instruments Ikarie by Casper & Bastl

Playlist: Ikarie by Casper x Bastl – a uniquely sculpted, flexible stereo/dual
peak filter module Ikarie Walkthrough - Every Feature Explained Ikarie - Patch
Tips Ikarie process - designers talk - Peter Edwards and Václav Peloušek

via Bastl Instruments "Reach the peaks of alien soundscapes with your Eurorack as mission control

Bastl Instruments is very proud to announce its latest collaboration with Casperelectronics – the Eurorack stereo filter Ikarie which is robust in features yet physically compact.

Ikarie is a uniquely sculpted, flexible stereo or dual peak filter module. It can continuously transition between lowpass and highpass filtering with a single knob. It also packs in an envelope follower for the incoming audio signal, which comes in handy when you're looking to increase your sound's internal animation.

Two parallel filter cores can be modulated in sync for work in the stereo realm, set apart for unique stereo effects (with either mono or stereo signal at the base), or chained together to make a 24 dB filter.

With only the mono output of the filter used, Ikarie behaves as a dual peak filter, which evokes formant-type sounds and rich, at will piercing, throaty resonance. The Beyond output gives you the spectral difference of the two filters, effectively turning the unit into a so-called twin peak filter.

Add an internal VCA, CV control over panning and resonance, optional overdrive of the input, and you can explore a vast universe of sound design possibilities, from liquidy through pinged percussive to lush and eerie. All in a very compact form factor, with tons of space for precision and creativity.

This module results from a collaboration between Václav Peloušek of Bastl Instruments and Peter Edwards of Casperelectronics. While Edwards' obsessive attention to detail gave this filter a uniquely balanced resonance and envelope response, the expertise of Peloušek delivered a one-hand user experience filter with a distinctive control scheme at a minimal footprint.

The module's name alludes to the 1963 Czech sci-fi movie Ikarie XB-1 (released as Voyage to the End of the Universe in the US), and the film served as the module's inspiration in many aspects. Long before Solaris, Space Odyssey 2001, or Star Wars, Ikarie focused on the subject of space exploration, and it paved the way for many to come. With its early electronic sound design and musical experimentation under the lead of Zdeněk Liška, immersive cinematography, and impressive production level, it remains one of the most original and exciting film titles in the science fiction genre. Bastl & Casper's Ikarie proudly carries the flag of this cinematic world.

Ikarie will be available on November 12th, through noise.kitchen and synth stores worldwide for MSRP 240 EUR without VAT.

Features:
two parallel filter cores (left and right)
based on 12dB/oct state variable filter topology
unique lowpass/highpass switching control scheme
