Uglysound Build Report: Zlob Triple Cap Chaos
Uglysound

"It's Matt's turn at the build desk and editing chair for installment number two of Uglysound Build Report. Soundtrack by Luer, using the Triple Cap Chaos module extensively."

via zlob modular:

"The Triple Cap Chaos(C^3 Chaos) is a 2hp analog, chaos based, noise oscillator, pseudo ring modulator/harmonics generator, and audio mangler Eurorack module available as a DIY Eurorack kit, PCB and Panel, or built.

It is a unique module, like the Diode Chaos, because it has never existed as a musical instrument until now. There is also no other module to my knowledge that can do exactly what the Triple Cap can do. The circuit(with several modifications) is based on the paper “Simple Autonomous Chaotic Circuits” by J.C. Sprott and Jessica R. Piper. As opposed to the Diode Chaos that generates control voltage this module focuses on the audio rate.

The “Emanate” potentiometer controls the coarser overall spectrum of the chaos, from lots of activity counter clock wise up to less chaos and more of a steady oscillation. The “Width, CV ATT” potentiometer can be thought of as more of a fine control for the chaos/oscillator. When something is inserted into the “CV” in the voltage normalization from the width knob is broken and the potentiometer now acts as an attenuator for the incoming cv. The Triple Cap is not a traditional volt per octave exponential VCO, and has a sort of narrow frequency range to exploit the chaotic behavior.

It expects a +5v to -5v max signal in to modulate the chaos. The “IN” jack is an A.C. coupled input for audio in, although cv and audio can work for both the “CV” in jack and “IN.” The “IN” will interfere and interact with the onboard chaotic oscillator depending on the frequency of the input, which may take some experimentation. It can create ring mod ish sounds, to added harmonics, to almost bit crushed sounds depending on the “X” or “Y” output. The “X” output is a more windy noisy sinusoidal based output and the “Y” output is more squared off and aggressive, harsher sounding output.

Some quirks about the Triple Cap: The “X” output can offset negatively or positively a little bit depending on the pot settings, but both outputs tend to stay around 10vpp. With the “Emanate” and “Width” pots all the way up the typical frequency will be around 150hz although some will reach 200hz at this setting. With the “Emanate” pot full counter clock wise “Width” pot full clock wise the frequency will be around 250hz. It is possible to send signals into the triple cap that can bring it out of the desired range causing the oscillation to cut out.

The Triple Cap has a double sided panel. meaning one side has the classic graphics and the other is Soulless with less graphics(see image gallery to the left).

Instruō - Saïch Oscillator

Instruō

See the dealers on the right for availibility.

"The Instruō saïch is a quad oscillator with super-saw functionality and built in “smart” VCA mixing. At its core are four fully analogue sawtooth waveforms that can be intervallically offset, individually and globally detuned, transformed and transposed, and mixed together in creative and interesting ways.

A perfect companion for the harmonàig quantiser, it can easily create harmonically structured chord voicings perfect for lush subtractive patching. Paraphonic patching in analogue with eurorack has now become considerably more convenient!

No quad quantiser in your system? Not to worry!
saïch includes beautifully simple diatonic modes allowing for the creation of
Ionian and Aeolian chord scales with a single 1V/octave CV source."

Beast-Tek Transmuter Volca Drum Test
Beast-Tek Transmuter VS MC-101
Beast-Tek Transmuter VS ER-1

"Transmuter is a bi-directional 8 channel MIDI to gate/trigger AND gate/trigger to MIDI packed into a single 10hp module. Transmuter was designed to get your external gear working together with your Eurorack modular so that you can expand your creativity and sonic palette without having to move to a bigger rack. Unlike most other MIDI to CV converters, Transmuter does not have a 1V/octave output for pitch which may seem weird at first .. BUT this is because Transmuter was designed to get external gear jamming alongside your modular without a DAW, instead of providing external control of your modular by a DAW, sequencer or keyboard.

ST Modular - STEREO COMPRESSOR with Boba Fat, HH, Pyxis and Phoebe

Stefan Tretau

„Stereo Compressor“ is a classic analog feedforward compressor, which takes its sidechain split directly from the input signal. It is based on the THAT4305 Analog Engine® single-chip with integrated Blackmer® VCA. It has two independent signal paths in order to process stereo signals. The left input is normalized to the right, if you want to compress mono signals instead. The module has three controls and a switch:

THRESHOLD determins the level at which the compressor starts working. This can be set from -40dB to 20dB.
RATIO sets how much the compressor turns down the volume when the threshold is reached (INF:1 to 1:1).
GAIN regulates the amount of make-up gain (-20dB to +20dB) that is applied to the signal.
Additionally there is an ON/OFF switch that makes it easy to compare the dry and compressed audio signal.

Please note that if you turn THRESHOLD counter-clock wise to the left, you reduce the threshold from 20dB (fully cw) to -40dB (fully ccw). Hence the compressor starts working earlier. If you turn RATIO counter-clock wise to the left you increase the amount of compression from 1:1 (fully cw, no compression) to INF:1 (fully ccw, infinite compression). So turning the knobs down corresponds to compressing the signal. The pictures below show the knobs in a neutral position where no compression is applied.

STEREO COMPRESSOR has a similar design as the STEREO SUM CHANNEL modules. If you want to add some compression to your mix STEREO COMPRESSOR is a perfect addition to your STEREO SUM Mixer.

Introducing Modbap Modular Per4mer

Modbap Modular

Additional videos:

And the Press Release:

Modbap Modular enters Eurorack market with powerful Per4mer quad performance effects module inauguration

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA: Eurorack modular synthesizers and instruments developer Modbap Modular by BeatPPL is proud to introduce Per4mer — perfectly portraying its inaugural offering as a 14HP quad performance effects Eurorack module inspired by beat-maker/DJ performance styles, and available to preorder — as of October 10…

The basic principle behind Per4mer is immediately apparent in its easy-to-follow front panel, packing a creative knockout punch in a compact (14HP) stereo effects-enabling Eurorack module form factor — feed in an audio input to then trigger on-the-fly effects, bringing DJ- style live improvisation to a modular environment. Effects can be triggered simultaneously or individually, where an inspiring effect palette combines to generate uniquely unconventional beats and melodies.

Per4mer puts a Doppler-style DELAY, lush REVERB, GLITCH (beat repeat), and TAPE STOP effects easily at anyone’s fingertips for triggering via four dedicated translucent mini-arcade buttons — buttons that can be manually operated or triggered from the four external gate inputs. Each effect has a set of four effects parameters that can be controlled using the four (FX 1, FX 2, FX 3, and FX 4) rotary knobs or by the four CV (control voltage) inputs. COMP (compression) with SIDE CHAIN input and COLOR processing effects are also available, along with CLOCK input and TAP tempo options. Obviously, external side chain and clock can be connected to interface with other modular and electronic music gear.

“Per4mer acts like a bridge between hip-hop and Eurorack.” So says Modbap Modular Designer and Founder Corry Banks. As a writer, emcee, producer, hip-hop artist (Phashara), and IT pro, he should surely know! “It packs in concepts familiar to lo-fi and beat-making circles, but it brings something fresh to Eurorack,” continues Corry Banks, before adding: “I think Per4mer will be a great entry point to modular synthesis for the modular-curious beat-maker — throw it into a small pod and use it like a standalone performance effects unit or rack it up with other modules to liven things up a bit.”

But best of all, Per4mer’s four performance effects — influencing its notable nomenclature, clearly — can be momentarily engaged or latched individually or simultaneously. Each effect has four tweak-able parameters associated with the four rotary knobs, duly designed for facilitating live improvisation with endless one-off, on-the-fly sounds and rhythmic dynamics. All audio inputs (INPUT L and INPUT R) are provided as mono connections, paired for stereo. Subsequently, Per4mer not only delivers a series of excellent effects and sound design possibilities, but it also allows the creative, classic, tried-and-tested techniques used by beat-makers and DJs to be applied to the wonderful world of Eurorack modular, especially enhanced by manual performance.

Digging deeper, the compressor allows for control over four compression (Threshold, Ratio, Attack, and Release) parameters via the four rotary knobs. Catering perfectly to those users craving the classic ducking sound of side chaining, the compressor also features selectable side chain detection that allows side chain activation via ‘sidechain input’, ‘audio input’, ‘clock input’, or ‘tap tempo’.

The COLOR processor features four color presets bringing texture and character to the signal path, pre effects — namely, Classic (12-bit), LoFi (8-bit), Saturation, and Wax (vinyl simulation). Such presets can be used in combination with the performance effects and compressor for a more characterful result. Reasons Corry Banks, eventually ending on a high note: “The COLOR processor is the special sauce built into Per4mer. It adds so much mojo and attitude. I lose time just enjoying processing audio through it and creating soundscapes to sample. Per4mer is a dope sound design tool as much as it is a dope performance effects module!”

Per4mer is now available to preorder at a retail price of $399.00 USD directly from Modbap Modular’s online Shop (https://modbap.com/shop/) and expected to start shipping in November 2020.

Mutable Instruments Introduces New Compact Slider Version of Veils

via Mutable Instruments

An updated classic

More compact footprint (10-HP), with sliders instead of knobs for the main gain/CV control.
Gain indicator LED.
Positive offset control (0 to 8V) for direct use of bipolar modulation sources.

---

WHO SAID YOU NEVER HAVE ENOUGH VCAS?

Veils provides four VCAs with an adjustable response curve and offset control.

Veils’ outputs are daisy-chained, allowing adjacent groups of 2, 3, or all 4 channels to be mixed together.

The cornerstones of modular patches

VCAs are absolutely essential in a modular system, for example for:

Shaping the amplitude or timbre of a tone with an envelope.
Animating a mixture of several oscillators.
Controlling the amount of filter modulation with a random source or a touch controller.
Applying an envelope on the linear FM signal hitting an oscillator.

Specifications

All inputs DC-coupled.
All inputs handle audio-rate signals.
Input impedance: 100k for all inputs.
Gain scale: a +5V CV translates to a gain of 1 (0dB), both in linear and in exponential mode.
Large gains above +20dB (sufficient for amplifying line-level signals) achievable in exponential mode.
Offset control adding an adjustable voltage from 0 to 8V to the gain CV.

You can find additional posts featuring Veils here.

Instruo Tain // dual bidirectional switch // Eurorack demo & patch tips

DivKidVideo

"Here’s the new dual bidirectional analogue switch ‘tain’ from Instruo. It works as a 2 to 1 or 1 to 2 input or output switcher. It has manual of CV/gate control with latching or momentary behaviour and a handy trick up it’s sleeve is the inbuilt reference voltage. Allowing you to use a trimmer to set a normalised voltage from -10 to +10 volts so you can switch to a voltage as a divider, or sub audio generator, switch from modulation to a static voltage, create octave jumps and more. As always I make these videos educational and packed full of synthesis tips and patch ideas so try these patches and ideas out on your system. I’d love to hear of any variations you’ve been creating with switches in the comments."

"The Instruō tàin is a two channel analogue bidirectional switch, similar to those found on classic semi-modular systems of the 1970s.

With momentary and latching functionality, external control and a manual button per channel, tàin can seamlessly switch between control voltage contours, trigger/gate patterns as well as audio signals all the way into audio rate.

tàin | verb (close) to block up, to move so as to cover an opening, bring two parts together, to make continuous as in a circuit."
