DIY Teensy-based Polyphonic Synth by Florian Loretan

Published on Apr 20, 2016 Florian Loretan

"Here’s a quick demo of a project in progress.

A while ago, I bought an old bontempi keyboard on ebay for €3.50, but it stopped working shortly after I got it. My original plan to simply replace the defective sound chip was ditched for a fully custom enclosure with its own interface - the only thing remaining from the original are the keys. The sound generation is done with a teensy and the fantastic teensy audio board.

There is still functionality to be programmed (arpeggiator, presets, sampler among others), but the hardware part is done, and enough is there for the synth to be really fun to play. A more detailed walk-through might come later."

DIY Teensy Synth: the Electronics

Published on Sep 15, 2016

"In this follow up video, I talk about the electronics part of my Teensy-based Synth. Note that I'm using the Teensy Audio adaptor to generate the audio, so all the electronics is only about control signals, no audio processing, which simplifies things quite a bit."

Introducing THE CMS 2607 - An ARP 2600 on Steroids

As you know, CMS (Cirocco Music Systems) is Phil Cirocco's synth company. He is not only the world's most renown ARP tech (BTW, see my CMS Lumina upgraded Odyssey here!), but also a manufacturer. THE CMS 2607 is his latest creation. Knowing it comes from him, you know this is going to be one great synth.

The following are some details via CMS:

"THE CMS 2607 6U RACK MOUNT INTEGRATED SYNTHESIZER

CMS is proud to unveil for the first time, our new synthesizer, the CMS 2607. We took all the features of the original ARP 2600, combined them with our world famous upgrades, added more cool stuff and then squeezed it all into a 6 space rack mount heavy duty enclosure. This particular incarnation is the '2500 version' that features a beautiful heavy duty brushed aluminum front panel. We are also currently making standard versions using grey and blue paint similar to the original ARP 2600 factory color schemes.

Initially, a very small quantity of special issue handmade 2607s will be made available to the general public until the factory produced models are available. These will be priced higher than the factory made mass produced units.

Price for one of the hand-made limited edition $8699.00. (9,499.00 for units with early type VCOs) plus packing and shipping charges.

Target price for the standard version 2607 will be 4999.00 USD . The standard version is not available at this time but we will soon be taking orders on the standard version. This price is subject to change. Check back with this page if you are interested in the standard version and can wait.

If you are interested in ordering one of the special issue limited edition 2607s now, send a paypal deposit of $3000.00 USD to filter@discretesynthesizers.com to register your order or mail us a personal check. New MeeBlip Triode

via CDM where you'll find all the details.

In short:

"Our MeeBlip synth is back. It’s still a tiny box you can add to a synth setup. It’s still just US$139.95. But now, it packs some improved features – and bigger-than-ever bass.

The most important thing I can tell you about this is, when you flip the 'sub' switch on and enable its new third oscillator, its bass sound is simply enormous...

NEW sub oscillator
NEW red color
NEW 8 additional custom wavetables, for 28 in total
Tuned envelopes for more response
Front-panel glide
MIDI control of analog filter resonance

All of this digital grunge is combined with the same Twin-T analog filter from the anode. It’s a vintage filter design intended for things like guitar pedals, which adds aggressive resonance to your synth sound."

New Double Knot Patchable Hardware Synthesizer System by Lorre-Mil

double knot teaser Published on Sep 3, 2016 Will Schorre

via Lorre-Mil

"Double Knot is a patchable synthesizer system which is both sequencer and voice. It can be thought of as something of an indeterministic "groovebox". A stereo instrument with two identical voices that can give different rhythms, melodies or cross timbral slaps. The idea of this instrument is to invite reconciliation of linear and nonlinear systems, and to encourage the building of multiple-feedback synthesis architectures. User interface is with rotary potentiometers, switches, and banana cables. Patching puts are banana ports of round brass tube. Clock in and out are 3.5mm jacks bearing 5V square waves. Audio output is 3.5mm line out."

Looks like a four octave Roland System-1 with more controls for $1499.

Curious if it will have the CV IO of the System-1m, and whether it will be capable of more than the System-1/1m. I'm guessing at least eight voice polyphony considering the name.

We'll find out more on 909 day if not sooner.

KORG Officially Introduces New ARP Odyssey Desktop Modules

ARP ODYSSEY Module | Reborn again for your desktop

Published on Aug 31, 2016 ARP

Update: video above added.

Korg initially leaked the desktop modules back on Sunday. We now have the details and the price - $599.99. Not bad for an all analog, ARP Odyssey, faithful to the original with CV, MIDI, and USB no less.

"Korg Announces ARP Odyssey in Desktop Module Format

Legendary analog ARP Odyssey reborn as a convenient synthesizer module

Melville, NY - - September 1, 2016 - - Korg brings back the unmistakable sound of the legendary ARP Odyssey in a desktop module format with ARP Odyssey Modules; offering users all the editing and sound-shaping parameters from the keyboard versions! To fit perfectly in today's DAW and desktop hardware-centric music production environments, this compact module form has CV/GATE included to interface with analog desktop racks and synths, USB and 5-pin MIDI for interfacing with controllers and DAWs. The lineup includes two models, the white Rev1 and the black and orange Rev3, reproducing traditional styling.

'The ARP Odyssey Module makes it even easier for users to obtain and integrate the distinctive analog sound that only a genuine ARP Odyssey can produce,' stated James Sajeva, Technology Director for Korg USA, Inc. 'By adding the ARP Odyssey Module to their setup, users can enhance their production and performance environments with fun and powerful, hands-on editing and the true-analog Odyssey sound that cannot be replicated from any plugin,' added Sajeva.

Since its appearance in 1972, the ARP Odyssey has been loved by countless musicians as a classic analog synthesizer. Forty years later, in 2015, with the advisory assistance of David Friend, co-founder of the ARP Instruments company, Korg resurrected the ARP Odyssey with a complete reproduction of the ARP Odyssey’s original circuitry. The ARP sound, which continues to be envied as an iconic analog synthesizer, was once again back in the hands of today's musicians. Now, Korg has further broadened the reach of the ARP Odyssey in today's world by releasing these new models.

The ARP Odyssey Module Rev 1 and Rev 3 with be available in October of 2016 for $599.99 each. For more information or to find a dealer visit www.korg.com."

KORG Announces New Volca Kick

KORG volca kick - ANALOGUE KICK GENERATOR

Published on Aug 31, 2016 Korg

Update: video above added.

And we have a new Volca dedicated to kick, bass, and sub bass sounds, based on an analog oscillator, and an oscillating filter from the original KORG MS-20.

Details via KORG:

"Korg Announces Latest Edition to volca Series with the volca kick

An Analog volca Designed to Deliver Powerful Percussive and Chromatic Kick, Bass, and Sub Bass Sounds

Melville NY - - September 1, 2016 - - With the latest edition of the ever-growing volca series, it’s all about massive kicks, toms, and basses. volca kick starts with a true-analog oscillator and offers drive and MS-20 resonator circuits to shape earth-shattering sounds that can be played and sequenced chromatically. It’s the perfect addition to any volca or desktop hardware set to bring serious boom to the user’s sound production.

As opposed to generating sounds using a typical sine wave, volca kick starts the sound of an oscillating filter from the original MS-20. The powerful filter of the MS-20 self-oscillates when resonance is increased to the maximum, and this is used to produce powerful kick sounds ranging from solid kick drums to crisp kick basses with complex overtones.

volca kick’s 16-step sequencer now has a new Touch FX feature, which provides one-touch sequencer variations and time divisions for even more live performance potential. The pattern chain function lets users connect multiple sequence patterns for successive playback, making it possible to construct large-scale developments of 32, 64, or even 256 steps by joining up to 16 sequences.

'The volca Series has consistently brought renewed attention to classic groove machines and historical synthesis. It now has a new focus. This time, it's the most important sound in dance music: the kick,' shares James Sajeva, Director of Technology Brands for Korg USA, Inc. Like all volcas, kick has a personality all its own, and combining it with other volcas or any other hardware adds unique character to users’ setups. The familiar Audio Sync connection means it plays exceptionally well with other volcas, minilogue, electribe and SQ-1, and the MIDI IN jack lets you use the volca kick as a sound module via DAW or MIDI controller.'

With its compact size, battery operation, and built-in speaker, it's easy to take the volca kick anywhere and perform any time. Available in October of 2016 for $159.99, to learn more or find a dealer visit www.korg.com"

Melville, NY - - September 1, 2016 - - microKORG-S starts with the legendary sound, layout and feature set that has made the microKORG a most wanted for nearly 15 years and adds a 2.1 speaker system with power that far exceeds its size, 64 all-new sounds (bank A) alongside the original 128 classic sounds (banks B and C) plus 64 user locations (bank D). In addition, the front panel features an eye-catching new white panel and maple wood ends..

'With serious sound and superior build quality, the microKORG analog modeling synthesizer became an instant world standard when it was released in 2002. The multitude of sound- musicians who gravitate to microKORG can now choose a version that needs no additional speakers, monitors, or other connections to play,' stated James Sajeva, Director of Technology Brands for Korg USA, Inc. 'The program memory capacity has also been increased twofold, and we’ve added 64 all-new preset programs that further meet the needs of the modern musician, including clearly defined and punchy leads, electric pianos that sound great in an ensemble, and solid basses.'

microKORG-S offers all of the original microKORG's functionality, including the ease of selecting a program of a desired musical genre via it’s famous ‘Big Knob’. In true microKORG fashion, a four-band vocoder with an included miniature microphone, arpeggiator, five easy-edit knobs, and optional battery operation are all part of the package.

'As a beginner’s first synthesizer that's easy to use, as a supplementary live synth for the stage, or as for a tool for professional production, the microKORG and the new S version will continue to play a role in every music scene around for many years to come,' added Sajeva.

The microKORG-S will be available in September of 2016 for $499.99. To learn more visit www.Korg.com."

Percussa to Present Digital Modular Synthesis System at Knobcon with New REMOTE Hardware Controller

FM synthesis using AudioCubes, REMOTE and SYNTHOR

Published on Aug 29, 2016 AudioCubes by PERCUSSA

"In this video we loaded the FM synthesis patch in SYNTHOR consisting of 1 output and 2 LFOs. Using REMOTE we can change the different parameters of each of the modules, such as the wave form or fine parameters of the LFO."

Percussa will be introducing REMOTE, a new hardware controller for their Synthor modular system at Knobcon this year. Many of you will be familiar with Synthor from previous posts here on the site. The following is in via Percussa.

"Los Angeles, CA (USA) August 29, 2016 - Percussa is proud to announce the official debut of its SYNTHOR digital modular synthesis systems, at Knobcon 2016, September 9-11 in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

With the launch of Percussa’s digital modular synthesis systems a new generation of digital modular synthesizers has been born. Using the hands-on wireless patching interface (AudioCubes), powerful synthesis software (SYNTHOR) and a tightly integrated controller (REMOTE), patching synth modules and changing modulation depth and synthesis parameters has never been so fast and intuitive.

WIRELESS PATCHING INTERFACE

SYNTHOR digital modular synthesizer systems come with a wireless patching interface which allows musicians and sound artists to patch synth modules in real-time by placing AudioCubes, which represent the modules, next to each other.

Moving cubes closer and further away changes the modulation depth of the signals flowing between the synthesis modules, allowing artists to expressively control more parameters simultaneously than is currently possible with traditional systems.

Multiple patch connections between modules can be created simultaneously by placing cubes next to each other, something which is impossible to do with systems where patch cables are created one-by-one.

POWERFUL DIGITAL SYNTHESIS SOFTWARE

Synth modules are automatically assigned through the SYNTHOR synthesis software to each cube. It is like having a virtual case of modules, offering the advantages of computer based synthesis, but with dedicated hardware interfaces for patching and parameter control. SYNTHOR runs stand-alone on MAC and PC and needs no other software or plugins.

The SYNTHOR digital modular synthesis system has built-in visual feedback: synth modules, patch connections, clock timings, and signal amplitude are all mapped to RGB colours and light intensity on the AudioCubes patching interface, giving musicians an instant overview of the state of the system at all times, without patch cables in the way, which is very convenient in live performance situations.

TIGHTLY INTEGRATED PARAMETER CONTROL SURFACE

Modular synthesis setups are easily created using the tightly integrated REMOTE controller which lets you configure AudioCubes and set parameters in the SYNTHOR synthesis software without having to touch your computer or mouse.
