HAINBACH & JORANALOGUE Introduce COLLIDE 4 - The Sonic Power Of Nuclear Test Equipment

video upload by HAINBACH

"I teamed up with Belgian Eurorack module manufacturer Joranalogue to solve one of the biggest problem I had with my wall of test equipment: I could use it in the studio, but not play it live. It is just too heavy and fragile, being about 50 years. So that part of my music remained unperformed. With our new module Collide 4 I and everyone else can now take the wonderful textures and sonic possibilities of nuclear research equipment on the road.

It is based on a lock-in amplifier, a tool made to sniff out tiny fluctuations of a frequency in vast amount of noise. But Joran took the concept further and added a frequency shifter. It is module with vast possibilities, and I can only give you a small overview and intro in this video. Check out Collide 4 at your trusted modular dealer in person now."

The origins of electronic music are found within the early works of a small group of forward-thinking mid-century composers, harnessing electronic test gear to create strange new sounds. Building upon this heritage, today everything comes full circle again through Collide 4.

The first hardware release to be co-developed by acclaimed musician and YouTube sensation Hainbach, Collide 4 builds upon the lock-in amplifier concept, and brings it into the Eurorack world. These atomic age physics research instruments are known for their raw power when used in musical applications. Now, any synthesist can experience this for themselves, at a fraction of the size and weight of a vintage unit, and with full voltage control.

The result is a wholly new kind of analogue synth voice and audio processor, with capabilities far beyond what the avant-garde pioneers could have imagined. Collide 4 is an expression of Hainbach's extensive experience in exploring the deepest musical realms contained within vintage test equipment, and the Joranalogue philosophy of electronic instrument design.

Honouring its innovative dual-phase architecture, this new kind of musical generator and processor has been christened the ‘quadrature spectral computer’. The sound? Quite simply: it's smashing!

Boris from Joranalogue Spills Patching Secrets! See what he Revealed at Perfect Circuit

video upload by Perfect Circuit

"Boris from Joranalogue came by to reveal the shocking truth: as it turns out, you can make some pretty sick beats with a modular synthesizer.

Joranalogue's unique approach to synthesizer design leaves a lot open to the performer's imagination. Rather than building straightforward, conventional sound sources, controllers, or processors, they instead make highly multi-functional modules that can cover a lot of different ground in any given patch. While that can be inspiring for some, it might be intimidating for others...but luckily, Boris is here to show us the way.

In this demo, Boris shows how a number of their modules can interact to create everything from evolving sound design to high-controlled rhythms and beyond. If you're into super powerful, performable modular synths—and hey, who isn't?—then you're gonna want to take a long hard look at what Joranalogue is doing.

Joranalogue - Compare 2

Published on Dec 6, 2017 DivKidVideo & Joranalogue Audio Design

"Here's the absolutely killer Compare from Joranalogue. It's a compactor, but not a normal one, a dual window comparator, a 4 output logic section, CVable window size and position, NOT / inverted output ... it's a magic voltage controlled voltage controlling toolbox! :) Check out the various patches processing audio, CV gates and making all sorts of stuff. It's really great at "getting more" out of other modules."

via Joranalogue

"Compare 2 DUAL WINDOW COMPARATOR

The window comparator is a very useful circuit building block that is common in general electronics, but rarely found in modular synths. While a regular comparator activates when the input signal voltage is higher than a threshold level, a window comparator checks if the voltage is between two levels (these form the 'window').

Compare 2 combines two such comparators and a logic section in 8 HP. The result is an advanced tool for extracting gates and pulses from analogue signals in Eurorack synths.

The detection windows are defined by the shift and size parameters, which can be varied using the knobs and CV inputs. Complementary gate outputs are available, with big three-colour LEDs showing each comparator's status.

All inputs are normalised from the left section to the right, but the two comparators can also be used completely independently. On the bottom, the outputs from both comparators are combined in various ways by the logic section, which also features LEDs.

You'll find a use for this truly multi-functional module in practically any patch, processing either CV or audio: complex rhythm generator, dual pulse width modulator, frequency multiplier/divider with PWM, digital ‘ring modulator’ with PWM, dynamic depth VCO synchronizer, voltage controlled swing, logic function array with adjustable thresholds... and many more applications waiting to be discovered!

Two independent analogue window comparators with voltage controlled parameters.
Multi-colour LEDs show status at a glance.
Normalisation between comparators simplifies common patches.
Complementary gate outputs for each comparator.
Logic section which combines the comparator outputs into AND, OR, XOR and flip-flop ('FF') signals, with LEDs.
Precision-milled 2 mm anodised aluminium front panel with high-resolution, non-erasable graphics.
Bullet-proof design: polarised power header and MOSFET protection circuit.
Includes 16-to-10-pin Eurorack power ribbon cable.
Premium mounting hardware: black screws, black nylon washers and matching hex key.

Joranalogue - Workshop @SchneidersLaden

video upload by SchneidersLaden

"A few weeks ago SchneidersLaden welcomed Frits Jacobs from Joranalogue. Frits gave a workshop on the complete product line of Joranalogue, looking a bit into the future and talking about modules that are not yet available for purchase. Frits not only teaches what you can also find in the product description for the modules online, but also brings many great examples of patch ideas and applications. There is a lot to learn here!

The video of the workshop documents the visit at SchneidersLaden and hopefully gives a good insight into the design philosophy of Joranalogue. We would like to thank Joranalogue for visiting us in Berlin, Frits Jacobs for the great presentation, Estefania Huygen for recording the video and the initial editing and last but not least all our wonderful guests."

New Superbooth Berlin 2021 Presentation Videos

You can use the controls on the bottom left or upper right of the player to skip around.

Playlist:
1. Joranalogue - SUPERBOOTH21 Gesprächskonzert (lecture concert)
The Belgium Eurorack synth maker Joranalogue presented not one, but three new modules at SUPERBOOTH21: Orbit 3, Enhance 2 and Step 8.

During their Gesprächskonzert at Fuchsbau they not only talked about these new modules, but Alter Fritz also performed a live session with a Joranalogue based Eurorack system.

Driven by an unrelenting passion for analogue circuits, Joranalogue Audio Design offers an expanding series of high-quality Eurorack music synthesizer modules. They're continually introducing new approaches and techniques to the Eurorack platform, making waves in the waters of analogue synthesis. All products are designed and made in Belgium, guided by experiences in both modern hardware engineering and vintage synthesizer servicing.

This year, the Joranalogue crew finally returns to Berlin to present its latest developments. Join designer Joran van Gremberghe and artist Frits Jacobs (Alter Fritz) for a whirlwind ride through the exciting world of these black and silver modules!
2. u-he Wiretap - SUPERBOOTH21 Gesprächskonzert (lecture concert) @SUPERBOOTH21
For this Gesprächskonzert Urs Heckmann, founder of Berlin based company u-he, teamed up with Sebastian Hübert for their performance and presentation at Fuchsbau during SUPERBOOTH21. The former one-man show u-he is now a tightly knit team of employees, active associates and 3rd-party contractors – with ambitious plans.

Famous for very accurate and widely appreciated software synthesizers and effects, u-he showed their first eurorack module at a previous edition of Superbooth – the CVilisation. At SUPERBOOTH21 it was time for another announcement. They took the chance to present their latest development with a Gesprächskonzert, of which you can find the video documentation below.
The module is named Wiretap and it played a major role in creating rhythm during their performance.

Wiretap is a double gate extractor for v/oct signals. It will generate a gate when the voltage goes high, when it goes low, when it's steady, when it moves, when it's higher than the other one and when it's lower. And you can set the gate length and get additional envelope outputs.
3. Bitwig - SUPERBOOTH21 Gesprächskonzert (lecture concert)
Berlin based DAW-makers Bitwig played a Gesprächskonzert on Thursday of SUPERBOOTH21. With the idea of - Less is More - Dave Linnebank showcased Bitwig and its possibilities, concentrating on simple ideas and how to creatively make them more complex. In other words: In this performance Dave starts with some short phrases, and then uses Bitwig Studio to extend them into musical passages. These will then become performance-ready clips by adding Bitwig's Operators for some fuzzy logic, getting the computer to make compositional choices while Dave is busy playing new lines on top.

Dave Linnenbank is a musician, technologist, and teacher. Over the past 20 years, he has crafted musical tools for pop and jazz artists, Broadway musicals, and desktop electronic musicians everywhere. Dave is part of Team Bitwig in Berlin, regularly making YouTube tutorials and more.
4. Verbos Electronics Complete Systems – SUPERBOOTH21 Gesprächskonzert (lecture concert)
During his Gesprächskonzert at SUPERBOOTH21 Mark Verbos is introducing the audience to the newly designed Verbos Electronics System Configurations: Designer Configuration, Performer Configuration, Producer Configuration.

Mark Verbos explains the intended use of each configuration as well as the philosophy behind not only the module selection but also module arrangement. He also plays some examples with all three system to give a musical reference to the explanation of the ideas behind each system. This Gesprächskonzert is a great opportunity to watch and hear all three configurations right next to each other – where else would that be possible? Enjoy the video!
5. Modor DR-2 - SUPERBOOTH21 Gesprächskonzert (lecture concert)
Modor introduced its powerful DR-2 drum machine at SUPERBOOTH21 with a short explanation by Marcel from Modor Music about its most deviant possibilities. This six-channel drum machine is completely digital – a discipline that Modor shines in. The DR- drum synthesizer features a sequencer with 128 steps and a very tidy user interface.

It positively surprised many people when it was introduced, because it is unusual and brings something new to the table. Luckily the DR-2 is not a copy of a classic, but uses modern digital synthesis to create drum sounds. A drum model can be assigned to each of the six channels. You can also assign the same model to several or all channels. The models include: Three bass drum models, three snare models, three cymbal models, claps, two tom models and miscellaneous, the latter divided into three subcategories: rimshot, rattle and cowbell.

This Gesprächskonzert was a very welcome opportunity to hear this rare drum machine in action. Enjoy the video!
6. Polyend Tracker - SUPERBOOTH21 Gesprächskonzert (lecture concert)
Sobutane presents his upcoming album Future Cake using two Trackers and one Medusa durng this Gesprächskonzert at SUPERBOOTH21.

After working with the Yamaha RM1x sequencer for 13 years Sobutane discovered the Tracker by Polyend. Originally bought just for drum parts, it revealed itself to be a great live-oriented tool, making him compose music outside his trusty RM1x for the first time in his life. Although the idea of a tracker is not particularly new, the Tracker still feels fresh and inspirational to many musicians. The Tracker brought Sobutane ideas and a new approach to composing his music, so he bought a second one and a Medusa, also made by Polyend. That was the starting point for the creation of the music you hear in his Gesprächskonzert for Polyend. Enjoy!
7. Ploytec Boom Kick - SUPERBOOTH21 Gesprächskonzert (lecture concert)
This Gesprächskonzert was unusually opened with a steel-guitar performance by DobBroMan, showing the Ploytec Boom Kick (Guitar Pedal).

Ploytec always valued the opportunity of Gesprächskonzerte at Superbooth and so they took the chance to do another one in 2021 this time for a rather unusual product – a guitar pedal that generates a kick drum in sync with the tapped in tempo. Additionally it sends a MIDI clock to other gear. This is useful for simple backing of what the guitarist is playing. The addition of a bass drum completes the otherwise solo guitar and with the MIDI tempo output, other instruments can play in sync – whether these are additional drum machines or synthesizers or whatever.

And there is one special thing to note about the bass drum sound – there are no samples saved to this machine. The drum sound is generated through synthesis and it has a huge range of possible sounds, suitable for pretty much all music genres.

And if you haven’t heard the Superbooth blues yet, watch until the end!
8. LPZW & Tubbutec - SUPERBOOTH21 Gesprächskonzert (lecture concert)
Kai and Tobi (aka LPZW & Tubbutec) probably could have sold every second SUPERBOOTH21 guest a 6mod6, that's how well their first joint product was received. At Fuchsbau the Berlin based manufacturers presented the result of their collaboration: a highly modified homage to the 606.

They were accompanied by an opening performance from Cem Oral a.k.a. Jammin’ Unit in which he used the new module intensively, giving a good idea about what the module sounds like in a musical context.

After the performance Kai and Tobi walked the audience through every sound engine of the module and showed their modifications of the original 606 circuits. Not only with the Gesprächskonzert, they convinced a lot of people that they created a great sounding and very versatile 606 inspired drum module.

Now the wait begins, the first batch of the 6mod6 still has to be built. Let's hope that the chip shortage does not delay the production too much.
9. Erica Synths PĒRKONS - SUPERBOOTH21 Gesprächskonzert (lecture concert)
Erica Synths team of engineers and musicians have been working hard to bring surprise us all with a new instrument that no one expected and everyone wanted. Erica Synths had their booth completely dedicated to their latest product the PĒRKONS HD-01 drum machine.

PĒRKONS features four sonically versatile hybrid voices (digital sound engine + analogue multimode filter with overdrive) and a sequencer with simultaneous control over all four percussion tracks, an internal analogue BBD FX send, parameter automation and much more. This is a modern drum machine with a serious vintage look.

For their Gesprächskonzert they brought not one, but two of these machines and finally explained it and showed what it is capable of. For everyone’s surprise, the demo started with a drone set – yes, it can also do drones. And for the final concert part of this presentation, no other than Kodek entered the stage. Sounds fun? Enjoy the video!
10. Nonlinear Labs C15 – SUPERBOOTH21 Gesprächskonzert (lecture concert)
Stephan Schmitt, the founder of Nonlinear Labs, plays some improvisations on the C15 and shows the enormous tonal possibilities of this instrument and its ability to be played very expressively – with up to four expression pedals and the two large ribbon controllers. The C15 is a puristic and distinct digital synthesizer. Its sounds are generated by elementary algorithms and feedback structures. This opens up new fields for sound design and gives musicians an expressively playable and dynamical behavior, similar to acoustic instruments. The C15 is an instrument that has to be played by hand to unfold its full potential. After the performance Stephan explains what features are new and which special features of the C15 he used.

This isn’t the first Gesprächskonzert by Nonlinear Labs, so be sure to check out the previous editions for more information about this unique instrument.
11. Haken Audio & La Voix du Luthier – SUPERBOOTH21 Gesprächskonzert (lecture concert)
Haken Audio and La Voix du Luthier have been presenting together at Superbooth for several years now, showing how well these two companies and their products fit together. This Gesprächskonzert features a Haken Continuum, the all-new Continuum Eurorack Module and the large Pyramid Resonator.
Watch Edmund Eagan passionately talk about his products and enjoy the demonstration and performance of the Continuum Fingerboard by Rob Schwimmer.

The almighty synthesis engine behind all these sounds is the Eagan Matrix, that now is also featured in the Eurorack module. This is a huge opportunity for sound designers and artists to expand their sound palette with very expressive and unique sounds.
12. UDO Audio Super 6 Desktop - SUPERBOOTH21 Gesprächskonzert (lecture concert)
UDO Audio brought the world one of the most interesting poly-synths of the recent years. Very rarely a company achieves such a success with their first ever product – but the Super 6 made it. Now UDO Audio showed the desktop version of this incredible synth. Great looks, ergonomics and the sound of the original Super 6 make this machine a very interesting option for many musicians and studios on the hunt for a capable poly-synth.

In this video George gives a little insight into the development of the company in general and his view on the past two years, since he presented the Super 6 to the world at SUPERBOOTH19.

'Freeze & Pass' weird sample & hold from the Joranalogue Select 2

Published on Jun 11, 2018 DivKidVideo

"Here's an odd, weird, quirky (whatever you want to call it) sample and hold style affect that I'm calling 'Freeze & Pass' with the Joranalogue Select 2. I'm using the gated hold input to freeze/hold audio (at audio rates). This gives a downsampler style effect but when it's not held it lets the signal pass. Rather than just sample one thing and step to another held sample like a sample and hold. Select 2 can do a tonne of stuff, so check out the full demo above."

Three New Modules by Joranalogue

Immersive Chaos - 2 new modules by Joranalogue video upload by Synth Diy Guy

"I can finally 'unveil' the modules I've been hiding! Special for Superbooth 2021, directly from Mexico :D

I go deep into the voltage rabbit hole on this one, featuring my mostly Joranalogue box. Stay Noisy!

www.quincasmoreira.com"

via Joranalogue:

"After a long hiatus, it's SUPERBOOTH time again! We're excited to be in Berlin once more and present our latest developments. This time, we've got no less than 3 new Eurorack modules in the series! If you are attending the event, you can check them out for yourself at booth Z125 in the tent village, outside the FEZ Berlin venue. If not, read on below!

ENHANCE 2

Moving from mono to stereo sound: a logical progression for any synthesist looking to expand their sonic palette. Making use of two audio channels, rather than just one, quite literally adds another dimension to the capabilities of a synthesiser.

Unfortunately, controlling stereo signals can be a challenge within a modular system. This realisation led to the development of Enhance 2: a convenient yet high-fidelity tool for stereo enhancement.

The primary stereo parameters are balance (moving the sound left or right) and width (making it narrower or wider). In addition, tone control is provided by a pair of unique, wide-ranging mid/side voltage controlled tilt filters.

Apart from the internal tilt filters, mid/side outputs also enable external signal processing such as compression or reverberation. An integrated mid/side decoder returns the results back to standard stereo.

ORBIT 3

In everyday usage, 'chaos' means 'disorder, 'randomness'. In mathematics however, chaos has a very specific meaning. Chaos theory deals with systems exhibiting highly irregular behaviour, seemingly random yet completely deterministic.

Orbit 3 incorporates a modified electronic analogue of the classic double-scroll chaotic attractor. The voltages at each of the module’s outputs can be thought to describe the orbit of a particle through 3D space around two equilibrium points.

Not just limited to low frequency modulation use, Orbit 3 can operate in the audio frequency domain as well, yielding a variety of waveforms from its three complementary output pairs. These span a wide range, from near-sine waves to white noise. The addition of temperature compensation and calibrated pitch tracking makes for an unconventional and lively, yet also accurate audio oscillator.

STEP 8

Step 8 represents a new type of modular building block: a sequential tracking/sampling register, which can be configured to provide a variety of functions. These include sequencers, sequential switches, counters, analogue shift registers...

At its heart lies an analogue 1-to-8 signal switch feeding an octet of high-stability track/sample-and-hold stages. Each of these has its own analogue output with an attenuation slider, in addition to a gate output. LEDs visualise the status of each stage in real time. The switch can be controlled sequentially using the built-in 8-step counter, or addressed directly by an analogue control voltage (CV).

For those who are feeling adventurous, there are always more applications to try: configurable voltage mapper, hocketing controller, clock divider, graphic waveshaper, multi-output analogue downsampler...

Patch Tuesday | Brass Patch with the Joranalogue System

video upload by Joranalogue Audio Design

"Welcome back to Patch Tuesday, a video series where we demonstrate the endless possibilities of the Joranalogue system!

We were recently asked how to achieve rich, brass-like timbres using modular synths. Boris went head first into creating this magnificent-sounding patch.

He considered every little detail needed to replicate the dynamic expression found in brass instruments. The result? A lush, full-bodied brass sound, all from the versatile world of Joranalogue modules (and a little touch of reverb)."

Joranalogue Audio Design CYCLE 5 / a playthrough of this very useful VCO and LFO

video upload by BRiES

"It can be your standard basic go to VCO both to use in your patches and as a reference to tune everything else to. It has an octave switch that is both a performance tool as well as just damn useful in the studio.

The video is a bit longwinded, which usually seems to be the case with my videos lately, but I think I covered all the basics (and a bit more). Should I cut out the live patching next time?"

Superbooth 2023: Joranalogue - Modular System

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Joran from Joranalogue at Superbooth 2023, who presented modular systems showcasing the Joranalogue system, their concept of truly patch programmable analog synthesis. It aims to provide a true system that allows you to immediately patch something up with modules and go for it without any menu diving, endless manuals to read, or firmware to update. Joran demonstrated some patches using the setups which were built three sizes, a small performance system with two rows, a bigger studio case with five rows, and the rather huge East Coast monster."

Superbooth 20HE: Joranalogue - Synthesis Agnostic Eurorack Modules

Published on Apr 24, 2020 sonicstate

"Joranalogue started some years ago repairing vintage synthesizers, after some time they decided to start developing their own eurorack modules. They call their modules modern analogue, that are synthesis agnostic… Meaning they’re able to produce all sorts of different synthesis types without adhering to one form of synthesis or another.

In this video we took a look at the range of different modules they have on offer. If you’re into precision modules that give you everything they’ve got then Joranalogue is probably a manufacturer you should be getting to know."

Joranalogue Filter 8 "the cutting edge in analogue VCF design"

Published on Aug 8, 2018 DivKidVideo

"TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS BELOW - Here's the new Filter 8 from Joranalogue. It's a VCA based filter topology similar to but not exactly an OTA design. It features a unique resonance circuit and (according to Joranalogue) is "the cutting edge in analogue VCF design". Now I can't talk specifics about the circuit but feature wise it certainly packs in a massive punch. 8 filter outputs including 1, 2, 3 and 4 pole low pass filters, a 1 pole high pass, unique band boost and notch, phase shifted output and 4 pole band pass. There's gain compensation to even out each output under self oscillation, we can freeze and hold the core of the module to effectively silence and halt the output or freeze (like a sample/track and hold) when it's producing it's own CV signals. The outputs turn to 8 phase shifted sine waves that tracks great as a multi phase oscillator or LFO and patching feedback means we can create a range of saw like waves with various exp. lin. and log. curves. We can drive the filter with the second input, or again with feedback, exponential and linear FM means we can get gorgeous rich formant throaty vocal tones under audio rate modulation or musical harmonious FM tones when using it as an oscillator. There's even more so I'll let the video do the talking.

TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS

00:00 hello, introduction and patch previews of what's to come

01:17 Feature walkthrough, going through bits of the manual, all the ins outs and controls.

03:26 Filter sweeps, 1, 2, 3 and 4 pole low pass, high pass, band boost and notch, phase shifted out and the band pass. Various resonances and output comparisons.

06:35 Using dual inputs to drive the filter

7:11 Dual inputs driving the filters. Sweeping through the responses.

08:40 Animating the filter. Using envelopes, sequences and gate patterns to modulate 1v/oct, exponential FM and resonance depth.

10:42 Filter rich layered and animated detuned sounds. This also looks at building up dynamic patterns and filter modulation.

13:41 Audio rate modulation of cut off and audio rate modulation of 'hold' for a sample and hold like "freeze". Similar to sync and downsampling FX.

16:28 Driving the filter with feedback. Creating clipping, saturation and non linear responses. At point digital-like phase modulation / phase distortion overtones appear.

20:09 Phase shifter! Using the phase shifted output like a phase shifter effect. There's also audio rate resonance depth modulation in this patch.

21:56 A short acid break. Patching up some 3 pole 18dB per octave low pass patches for a little bit of an acidic filter pattern.

22:48 Filter Pings. Using the ping input to excite the filter core. Create melodic lines, deep bass, percussion and linear FM tones.

25:42 8 phase oscillator. Using the oscillating filter as a sine oscillator. Glassy and harmonious FM tones under modulation.

27:20 Patching feedback over the oscillating sine to create new wave shapes. You can make a near perfect saw wave as well as other exponential and logarithmic ramp shapes as well as some odd comb like shapes.

28:19 8 phase voltage controlled LFO. Using multiple phases to create cascading modulation across a wider patch. As above with audio we look at feedback to make new LFO shapes too.

30:22 Slew limiting. As the filter works at sub audio rates we can use it slew a signal. Here we add glide by slewing a pitch sequence. We also add resonance for a way to inject wobble and vibrato into the pattern.

32:39 FM oscillator tones - a little musical break. We look at gated the hold on and off while this operates as an oscillator. This creates little clicky rhythms and breaks in the sequences we're using.

33:52 Resonating envelopes - using envelopes to excite the near oscillating core of the filter to create wobbles within the envelopes shape. We can also superimpose audio rate tones or LFOs into the envelopes too."
